The terror mission (#1) sounds fun (go team evil!). Otherwise I have no preference.

Is it safe to assume Vheld will still be available to help Erg with the design of that TW item for Carl ?

We previously estimated that it will take about ~12 IC hours for Erg and Vheld to finish the Design phase.
They could do that in a Time Hole , and speed it up to only ~2 Hours Merctown time would pass.

Once that is finished , Erg will be able to complete what he said he would do and offer the design concept to Carl.
Then Carl can decide if he wants to commission Erg and Vheld to actually put in the time to make a prototype of the device for him. Or maybe Carl will decide against it. It will be up to Carl at that point. But at least it will release Erg from the commitment he already made to Carl.

I like the sound of 1 the most. Next would be 6, then 2 for exploding Lonestar, then 5, with 3 and 4 being lowest on my list.

Possibly dumb question but what is the etiquette on the gear we requested? Do we add that to our sheets or does the GM/AGM?

NEWS!
We went and fucked-up Crimea in a little over 24 hours. A single day in mid-July. Technically, For the Spooks it's July, 110. Merctown is 6 months ahead. Somehow or other we're going to match-up with MT time before we leave.

6 months is a long-time for mercs to sit around. It's also a long-time to hand-wave away. Now is the time for personal projects, pilgrimages or prison sentences folks!

Tinkerers time to shine. Magic men hit the books. Lily and Echo are both technically on personal journeys at this time. Carl, not sure what your into, but if you have ideas, I'm down

Do you guys think that Whisper should relax her strict no-magic stance now that she's a gunslinger? (And also having seen some impressive magic in action?)

Also, what kind of pistols would be suitable for use in a Mecha-knight? :D

Not relax her strict stance as much as expand her horizon! If it can be an advantage, why turn it away? :)

An excellent question about pistol, maybe some Techno-Wizardry pistols ;)

I agree with Echo, Whisper should find a way to accept what she can do without crediting it to magic. Call them abilities or the properties of the items that she uses. Carl also thinks negatively about magic, but he learned to accept it. He does not think he is using magic because all the magic comes from the devices that he uses and not from him; he has natural ninja abilities that seem like magic, but he cannot summon magic from within, so he does not equate what he does as magic. It is his way to cope with using magic and still think negatively about it.

An excellent question about pistol, maybe some Techno-Wizardry pistols ;)

Carl wrote:I agree with Echo, Whisper should find a way to accept what she can do without crediting it to magic. Call them abilities or the properties of the items that she uses.

Your character , it's up to you .. but I'll give you a 3rd option:

Ignorance is bliss.

It wouldn't be much of a stretch for her to think some items are not magic even if they do technically by the game books include some magic.

Erg is already firmly in the camp of :
"Any sufficiently advanced technology will be indistinguishable from magic."

Whisper is a user of thing. She doesn't understand the physics of how/why the nuclear reactor in her armor works. She just accepts what the techs told her and that it does. For all she knows they could have been lying and the it's technically a magic power supply, and she might never know the difference.

Soo , Whisper doesn't have to know it's ,technically by the game books 'magic'. It isn't that much of a stretch (nor device limitation) to pass it off to her as just very advanced technology. Especially if two geniuses like Erg and Lahz work on something for her.

I mean if a user was never told the difference, or that one was magic and the other technology.
Imagine a device that Creates a Force Field to absorb damage. It can only absorb soo much at a time, and so much a day.

1st is a nuclear powered Naruni Force Field .. Purely Science/Technology
A 2nd is a rune or magic item .. Purely magic
A 3rd is a techno-wizard mix of both magic and technology .. Mix of Both Magic and tech.

From the user's point of view they all can look very similar to each other. They all function very similarly. If never told which was which, someone like Whisper might never know the difference. She doesn't have the sense magic or knowledge of magic that Vheld does, and she doesn't understand science and technology as well as Lahz does. She doesn't have the psychic ability to examine an item like Lahz does. To her , she pushes the buttons and it works, she understands it well enough to load amo, change parts, etc.

If Whisper ever desired for a overly complex overly technical science/technology soundly description , she can ask Erg. Then, maybe a few hours of boring dry science lectures later , she might regret asking, but she'll have been given her science/technology sounding description.
;)

The devices themselves just need to look and function close to what Whisper expects of science, and far enough away from what she expects of magic. So the magic item that creates force fields could technically just be a ring .. but it will be easier to pass it off to Whisper as just being advanced science if it was made to look a bit more technology like , similar to the harness of Naruni Force Fields.

Cool cool cool. So basically what I'm hearing is 'don't have such a stick up your butt', Whisper. Clarke's law is pretty much true but if we're shopping, I don't necessarily see Whisper going into a magic shop and buying anything. Unless someone is really really adamant about it. On the other hand, if anyone wants to make me a couple of neato oversized pistols for my Mecha-knight, I'm all for that :D

I like the idea that Erg's influence helps change her views.

Whisper's time in the New West will have exposed her to many helpful and practical uses for magic or magic items. Not to mention combat applications and weapons.

Erg really believes that magic is a science and maybe his constant and brutally dry lectures actually sink in once in a while. :D

Recognizable; useful; trustworthy
TW items and common magic are tools like any other.
Refusing healing or beneficial magic is stupid. In the end, a gun is gun and a tool or useful thing can be treated the same. Provided she can understand its purpose and function, she'll use the shit out of it.

Wait there's a Hell? Two Hells? And a Hades?!? Many, many hells... Oooh, my head hrts
Existential horror
However... just down the hall in Vheld's room, there's some weird shit going on. She many never get used to demonic birds, wolves and henchmen. The power a talented magic-user wields must be respected; but the form it take may be unsettling.

My two cents.

Before the last mission, Lahz fitted Whisper's PA with a:

WI-GL8 Automatic Shotgun/Grenade Launcher (Modified and fitted to Mecha-Knight as an alternate side-arm.)

It's essentially a Pistol to the big PA. I can rig up a matched set. You could try for Mother of Pearl handles ... Etc.

Erg, two things SNAFU mentioned in chat that I didn't make clear: The scrolls are written so we'll that we get a +30% to convert them, and the folio contains multiple (albeit a limited number of) copies that we don't get to keep after we're done. So, go nuts if you want.

The Dragon's Hoard and It Came From The Sky are the favorites. The former has a slightly higher ranking vote-wise. Can I get a confirmation?

The Dragon's Hoard

It looks like It Came From The Sky beats out The Dragon's Hoard with 4 first place votes to 3. Since Erg did not give a single vote for Dragon's Hoard, the 3rd choice wins even if you apply value to each vote.

If I use the ranking order of votes to represent being weighted as follows:
1st choice =1
2nd choice = 1/2
3rd choice = 1/3
etc.

Then votes by ranking:
Option1> 1 + 1 + 1/3 + 1/2 + 1/3 + 1 + 1 = 5.16666
Option2> 1/2 + 1 + 1/2 + 1/3 = 2.33333
Option3> 1 + 1/3 + 1/2 + 1 +1 +1 +1/2 +1/2 = 5.8888
Option4> 1/2 = 0.5
Option5> 1/3 + 1/4 +1/3 + 1/3 = 1.25

Soo, I agree with Carl , Under that method , UFO (5.888) just barely beats Dragon Hoard (5.166).

Unless we'd like to instead have a 'run off' vote just between UFO and Dragon Hoard ?

If we do wish to have a 'run off' vote, just between those 2 'finalists' :
I'd vote/proffer:
1st UFO
2nd Dragon

Sounds like you could benefit from a TW device to block that from time to time.

Kind of like how Erg made his MAD TW device to conceal his own psychic and magic user 'ness' from being detected by dog-boys , psi stalkers and such.

I could make more 'MAD' devices , they could use to temporarily conceal them from dog boys and psi-stalkers.

I got to wondering:

  • So are there any specific 'wish list' things people want in our group's pending 2nd facility outside of the Haunt ?
    Current List AFAIK:
    • Connection to the Spokes investment in it is secret/private.
    • Near a Ley Line.
    • Near but not in Merctown city limits.
The large weapons, robot vehicles, etc. Those are confiscated by defenders at the city gate. So we can do repairs, tinkering, and upgrades to them, we need to have access to them. So, instead of trying to sneak such things past the Merctown defenders, we just have the 2nd 'satellite' facility where such issues don't impede us.
    • Good Security.
    • Large enough for all tinkering projects.
Repairs and upgrade work on large robot vehicles. Mystic research by Vheld. And other such.
  • EU Site mechanics:
    • A merc group expanding to have a 2nd building/facility, or even permanently hiring NPCs for work, is perfectly reasonable. Such things are also sited in numerous cannon texts.
    • Still, that having been said, I don't recall other merctown merc groups yet actually doing this on a 'IC' level. So do we want to RP some / all of it, or montage through it , etc?

Your list looks good, Erg.

I imagine we could figure something out in a similar location to the Girls of Merctown on the Outskirts. One thing I think we should add, with Vheld's help I hope is a permanent teleportation access ring from within the Haunt to the Facility.
I think imbuing a small room with Teleport Superior in both locations would suffice and it would then only require activation (unless I am wrong, which I could be.) We could add a P.P.E. Talisman to the room to allow any of the Spooks to access it. The Talisman needing refueling or replacement monthly or something.

I think the Teleporting will have to come later , as a project in it's own right. Creating 15th level spell magic devices that can be operated by 'normals' is not a 'liitle' thing .. we can do it (eventually) .. at considerable cost in time and money .. but .. 1st things 1st.

- - - - - -

Probably best as a Techno-Wizardy project:
One of the spells Vheld was asked to have us create devices for was the Temporal Magic Spell Warp Space and Time .. such a device could also provide such a feature to us .. after we finish the work for Vheld's friends , we make another one for spooks to use ourselves .. to do what you describe .. or , we keep the 1st prototype, and give them the 2nd one built.

Conventional Magic Talisman: (no good)
Is limited to spells bellow lv8 .. Teleport Superior LV15 spell is a bit beyond it's abilities.

Biowizardy Magic Items: (Vheld probably frown on supporting or helping Slugorth profit by buying such merchandise from them.)
Advantage is that the trapped creature's life force acts as the self-recharging battery to provide the energy for spells. But 600 PPE per teleport usage is a pretty high cost. Few Bio-Wizardy items have that much. And very few can be programed with spells as high as level 15 spells like Teleport Superior.

Permanently Empowered Circle Magic:
As found in some of the books, is it's own extremely rare branch/form of magic .. no spook , not even Vheld knows such (at least not yet).

Pardon, I did not mean to make it sound as though something of this venture would happen in the snap of a finger. For such ease of access would certainly require a great deal of effort and was merely an idea of "This would be beneficial."

My thought is, pooling resources, it could be accomplished. A Research Facility, or any form of secondary facility, is not a one-two-three man venture. It'd require the same dedication the primary one took upon its creation. Here are my thoughts and what Echo will be looking for in his scouting while Erg worries about the specifics.

1. Secured Facility, not necessarily unknown or unmarked but something that had a high degree of security too it.
Targets: Preferably a facility that acted as a Hanger or the like with an underground complex where the research portion could be conducted. At best, the hanger and all would be underground.
Hanger Size would be large enough to house several projects on PA's or potentially the size to hold aerial vehicles. Underneath that would be the research complex itself, think Resident Evil Hive but much smaller.
Using EP, as stated in the portion below, could solve this easily unless we want to do it the RP way. (I am for either direction, just laying out observations and/or options)

2. Not off the grid, but unnoticed.
Targets: Only the right people know. This type of target could be accomplished with a Influential Contact rather easily. A powerful figurehead in the city, scrubs the records of the facility they formerly operated and gave it to the Spooks as an unmarked donation. Untraceable by standard means. That would be the EP purchase contact (assuming anyone is considering that route. It is the easy way).
Hard Way: Echo is going to find the right people to talk to and create a new Cyber-Disguise for the transactions, his Cyber Disguise would be the face of the transaction, that face would only appear when needed. RP route. This way, only key figures even know the facilities location or original purpose and now just see it as being rented out to random groups, every few months Echo or another could create a new false identity and scrub an old one to keep this facade going. The RP version would require more maintenance than the EP contact version.

3. Easy Access.
Targets: Ideally a magical teleport using Vheld's pre-existing Teleport Superior Spell grafted as a Ritual or Circle (If that's even a thing, DnD it is, not sure about Rifts) that merely needs an activation step once created, where the Talisman or Energy Sphere concept comes in. Ideally, as with all great innovation, the greatest products are often achieved by combination. Combining the accessibility of a Talisman to the Energy Sphere Spell to Activate the Teleportation Circle should be plausible and within the confines of current levels. I do not yet know the specifics on exactly how it would work (not that well versed in spell-weaving) but I hope with input from Vheld and Erg, such an outcome could be possible.
EP Purchase: Use EP to purchase a Guild Contact who would have the needed spells and abilities to perform such a feat without fear of reprisal or betrayal.

With that, we have two real options on making this entire project (beyond the teleportation) a success.
Option 1: Easy way, spend EP. The group could pool together 10-20 EP (Ideally no more) and order either a couple Influencial Contacts for the Group itself or one Powerful one that could accomplish all of this without any fear of reprisal or betrayal. If we go the EP way, we should aim bigger than a random Research Facility and go full on second base type thing (a flying one would be dope).
Option 2: More methodical and taxing way, however the more fun option. Roleplay each of these encounters with key individuals, garner trust or favors over missions gained and completed to achieve this. This option is only useful in the acquisition of a facility within Merctown or during a mission. Perhaps that crashed alien ship could provide teleportation technology.

These are all just thoughts with only surface research done. I haven't researched the validity of my ideas or if the rules even allow for them (I'll be doing so tomorrow), just some fun concepts to bounce around.

Nothing to need 'pardoning' , I only meant to try and put it a bit into scale .. I agree it would be beneficial , and is doable .. just expensive, (time, money, potentially exotic materials) .. My apology if I gave a different impression.

I like allot of your list.

I more lean toward the RPing route myself. :D
I can envision lots of potentially very fun adventures and stuff along the way toward accomplishing such.

Echo wrote:Ideally a magical teleport using Vheld's pre-existing Teleport Superior Spell grafted as a Ritual or Circle (If that's even a thing, DnD it is, not sure about Rifts) that merely needs an activation step once created, where the Talisman or Energy Sphere concept comes in.

Permanently (purely magical) empowered magic circles like you describe are a thing in Palladium Cannon material.
But it is usually a magic 'class' in it's own. Just like Temporal , Necromancy, Biomancy , Rune Magic, Techno-Wizardry, etc.

I can see it being a possible Techno-Wizard Device, Erg and Vheld could make.
I do agree , such a device would be useful for keeping the facility covert , and such. Not to mention just pretty cool. 8)

Echo wrote:I hope with input from Vheld and Erg, such an outcome could be possible.

Definitely possible, just expensive (time, money, potentially exotic materials).

Echo wrote: some fun concepts to bounce around.

100% agree.

When I get some time .. I'll do a preliminary write up in the Tinker thread for a TechnoWizard type transporting device like you described. Teleporting, wormhole, etc.

If we are observing the holiday period, we should either begin the mission immediately, or wait until January.

If we are keeping on as is, we will begin in about two weeks. Opinions?

Posting here as well as the Hangouts chat;

I am in no way inhibited by holiday slow-time. If anything it adds to my free time allowing me to post more frequently as the need arises.

I would prefer to begin the mission sooner rather than later. I don't mind hanging out in Merctown, but flooding Merctown is another thing.

Starting in 2 weeks would be perfect for my time-scale as my intern becomes a real boy (Full Employee) and can actually legally do work without me, so more free time, at least til New Years.

I am slowed a little during holidays.
I can still check and reply to posts several times per week.

If we as players are to begin the next mission very soon .. I will have to post more tinker thread entries to account for the several months of PC fast forwarding. It probably isn't a bad idea for me to get those started anyway. Even if the actual IC time to do them is not yet allocated.

The post-rate suspension will still apply but for the most part, we Spooks seem to be able to keep on as is, if that's the case then we'll proceed as below:

Yes, tinkerers and spell-learners can fill in about 4 months of work as fast as you can. Echo and Whisper have already technically spent that time.

You can tinker without my supervision up until the very end pretty much. The point here is to provide you with all the time you could ever need, the one thing we need to determine is if there are any disastrous, costly failures and if not then it's really just a matter of the degree of success.

If you are Carl or Minerva or have less than 4 months of tinkering/learning to do then you may "retro-RP" your activities for this period, similar to how Carl has been doing. However it can be even more involved if you'd like. With appropriate effort and skill rolls you could attempt to set-up minor contacts, or even money-making enterprises similar to the options outlined in the Black Market book or just take jobs and earn a wage for that time. It's possible to pick-up a secondary skill or two even in that time, I think.
