Patreon Issues in the Future (Heads Up?)

Postby Egan Grey » Sat Aug 01, 2020 5:48 pm

From some of the news that I have been hearing recently.

Patreon Troubles - Journalist view

Patreon Troubles - Lawyer view

Who knows what will happen or how this will play out, but it looks like Patreon could have some financial issues coming up due to these lawsuits. And normal people will probably get caught up and have issues because of it.

So I guess this is just a heads up if you haven't heard already.

Yeah, I've been paying attention to this of late as well.

I've gotta find an alternative and get started on it ASAP.

Edit: I've found three possible alternatives.
Let me know any insights or opinions you might have regarding these three.

Out of the three options I would lean towards Liberapay....I guess, maybe. Subscribestar if they can accept CC's again.

Subscribestar is using the same model as Patreon with them holding the money first then doling it out, which could allow for the same issues happening over again as right now. Though Sub has already survived a cancel culture attack on it previously and it is still kicking so that could be a good thing. Plus it is known, so trust is established. Not sure if they worked out the credit card thing from the attempted attack.

Liberapay is an unknown, looks open source code so maybe a plus there. However, it could be riddled with holes as well. Stats claim they moved around 7 grand in a week between members so far... It would probably be the best option for you receiving the most from the donations due to low overhead, but not being well known could hurt trust in giving up credit cards and banking info for some.

I was going to say Memberful all the way. That is until I scrolled all the way down and seen that it is a Patreon company so I'm not sure if that would be the best choice.

Rather than being just a complete downer, I will ask if you ever considered switching the site to having a direct pay option. I'm not sure what the costs would be to do so, and it would require a more business mind and feel rather than as a hobby on your end. And the headaches trying to get everything setup I could only imagine.

Yaaaaa for wishy-washy unhelpful stuff, amiright?

*Edit - Just looked at what Tiree posted.... that doesn't look bad either, plus expand-ability is nice.

Unfortunately, only Subscribestar offers everything we need: monthly subscriptions and tiered memberships.

I'm not interested in providing financial information to any more websites than strictly necessary. I trust that we're going to wait for actual news on Patreon's status before making a switch.

Totally understandable concern, and it's something like that, but I'd rather not give Patreon the opportunity to screw me out of a month's patronage if I can avoid it.

I'm just keeping y'all in the loop at this stage, so that you're not surprised when the big switch happens.
