Taste of the Town (25)

For high class, fine dining, there are few spots better than Taste of the Town. The food is varied, with dishes from a myriad of cultures, including a handful of alien delicacies. Quality is superb and the average meal costs 50-100 credits. Taste of the Town was the first restaurant opened by Boris Charovich (8th level Chef/Merchant), MercTown 's premier restaurateur. Charovich is a well known, highly regarded and successful businessman who owns or co-owns a dozen of the finest restaurants, bars and clubs in town. What few realize is that he is also a front man for the Black Market. To open Taste of the Town he was forced to borrow credits from the syndicate, and now Ted Dutcher is a silent partner in all of Charovich's businesses and skims a quarter of the profits. Fortunately, Boss Dutcher is only interested in the profits, and Charovich has a free hand in how his businesses are run, so long as he pays the B lack Market its due. Although frustrated and annoyed by the arrangement, Charovich isn't hurting from it. He's made several million credits and the mobsters who frequent some of his restaurants are always polite, respectful, and big tippers. They also help to squash troublemakers and problems before they get out of hand - Boss Dutcher protects his investments.

The beautiful restaurant was bustling with activity even at this time of night, with the outdoor lounge area filled with high profile looking individuals, more human than not. Pulling up in a snazz limousine, Jezebel is the first of the GIRLS that steps out and she earns some stares from patrons and passerbys. As the GIRLS filter out, they all enter the building, they notice a live band playing excellent music, and dozens upon dozens of nicely dressed patrons inside. It's impossible to tell the difference between the low life's and the high life's in this establishment as it seems at the bare minimum, everyone seems to be dressed like stars. The group is greeted by a beautiful human hostess.

"Table for seven?" She asks and then escorts the group to a large, rectangular table with six chairs on either side and one on either end, seating eight. After seating everyone, the hostess points too a small electronic pad near each different chair. "Please use this to place your orders, ask for drinks, refills or other general questions. Your server, Horace, will be here soon to help facilitate your time here." She says with a smile and takes her leave.

Everyone has before them an electronic kiosk about the size of a small tablet with varying menu items, specials and drink orders.

Jez slides out of the limousine with the other seven GIRLS, and slinks her way into the restaurant, following the server to the long table with the tablet-menus. Before she lets the server go, she asks her if the restaurant would be amenable to lowering the lights to a comfortable level for Jezebel. Jez is amenable to paying for such if required. Fancy and high-tech. I like it! She beams a huge goofy smile at all the other GIRLS, clearly excited to finally be able to have such a special night. Camaraderie is built not just through work, but also through play! Jez peruses the digital menu and makes two selections. An entree of something yummy-looking white lumps called "gnocchi" and some kind of red meat served with scrumptious-looking tubers.
    • Gnocchis with daikon/shrimp, half cooked veal, smoked oil
    • Dry-aged beef sirloin, roasted potatoes
She looks up from her tablet-menu to the rest of the GIRLS at the table with a huge smile. "We each deserve treats like this from time to time," she says to all seated at the table.

Analoy makes it a point to push her leg through the high slit in her dress as she steps out of the limo. Making her way into the restaurant she can't help but to look out over the room at all the marvelous plates arranged in front of the rather forgettable crowd of people. She takes a few deep breaths to aid in her appraisal of the various dishes before they arrive at the table.

Taking a seat in the middle of one of the sides, Analoy glances at the tablet when their host directs them to it for the menu. Furrowing her brows at the menu tablet, she starts fumbling with it like Larmac who was asked to do a hard days work. I really should make it a point to learn about computer. Its a good thing this menu is just a touch point. After a few minutes she's pretty sure she's ordered:
º Sea bass, kale cabbage, celeriac/hazelnuts mash, citrus sauce
º Figs feuilleté, fontainebleau cream

She looks to the other GIRLS as they look over the menu, "If you see something you like, let me know and maybe I can replicate it back at home."

Before exiting the limousine, Amber uses Alter Aura to change her aura in the following ways:
• Conceal the I.S.P. levels to be show them to be minimal (like a minor psychic).
• Conceal the amount of base P.P.E.; seems to be only 1 -2 points.
Alter Aura will last for 4 hours. Costs 2 I.S.P.

Amber exits the limousine and strides purposefully into the glitzy restaurant acting like she belongs here and does high-class restaurants every day. Now this is how to make an entrance! She thinks with a satisfied grin on her face.

As they are being seated she has a quick word with Jez. She keeps her voice low to avoid being overheard by any of the nearby patrons of the restaurant. “I don’t know if this is anything, but I thought I should say something. It’s about our new Unit back at the Hangar. I’m pretty sure it is up to something and not sitting just sitting there guarding our door while we are out. It told Lucy that it would remain near the doorway unless it needed to communicate with the group, but it has moved and was in a different location in the main hanger. It doesn't seem like it's trying to hide exactly, but when any of the GIRLS go near it, it ceases any movement and goes still unless approached. I’m sure it is observing us and probably has the whole hangar or our gear rigged with listening devices by now.” She shrugs, “I don’t know what to do about it now, but I’m thinking we will have to be very careful about what we say around it. Let’s enjoy the evening and figure it out later.”

Analoy wrote:She looks to the other GIRLS as they look over the menu, "If you see something you like, let me know and maybe I can replicate it back at home."

Hopefully that is the last business I need to complete tonight, she thinks as she has a seat at the table and starts scrolling through the menu. “Oh good! They have seafood!” She exclaims. “I love seafood. It’s not very easy to come by where I’m from, so anytime you want to make seafood Analoy, I’m in!” She makes an easy decision to have the roasted scallops as a starter, and sea bass with vegetables and rice as her main course. She also asks for a glass of chardonnay to pair with her meal.

Millicent steps out of the limousine and looses her breathe for a second. this is how the comfortable live. The Operator is silent as she follows Jezebel and the others into the restaurant and is escorted to their table. ”This reminds me of some of the restaraunts in Quebec I was told about…” The awe in Millicents voice is apparent. She will suggest two plates for the table:
    • Soft-boiled egg, truffle, shitakes mushroom mash with porto wine, parmesan cheese foam.
    • Pan-fried foie gras, jerusalem artichoke cappuccino

”This place is magnifique!” Millicent’s French accent bleeds through as he excitement for the restaurant continues to build. Then she sees the drink menu. ”oh! This is a place where you get to taste the wine until you find one you like!” Millicent was sure there was probably a few more steps involved, but that basic premise made her forget the opulence of the arena she currently was in.

As Amber mentions her concerns about their guest, Milly agrees, with some confidence. ”It may be spying on us, but once I have a month or two with it… I will be able to tell you how it was made and what ever surprises it may be hiding from us. What we want to do with it however.” Milly lets the thought die in the air. ”If we are going to play nice with its maker then we should play nice with it. For now. Either way, I cant wait to take that thing apart.”

Setting the Scene

The lighting of the area is varied and adjustable for different sections of the restaurant and easily adjusted to a low, comfortable dim for the Arismal but still perfectly visible to the humans and others in the group.

The GIRLS are able to work the Electronic Menus with ease and find the variety on the menu to be far reaching. Almost any dish native to earth, and dozens more brought in from other dimensions, are there. True to their word, the staff leave the GIRLS alone except to deliver food, drinks and refills, responding with a practiced precision that the high elite are used to receiving from their staff. On a lark, the GIRLS can tell that the staff stays away from the tables unless asked to be there, and it seems like many other tables have similarly dressed women and men.

There is a certain degree of respect granted between the patrons, as no other patron's eyes linger outside their table for too long. As though they expect private discussions to be had and expect due privacy for their own.

Within minutes, the food the GIRLS order, and drinks are brought out and the GIRLS are enjoying lavish dining. Analoy is able to determine she can replicate some of it but there are certain ingredients and smells she isn't entirely familiar with so without the exact recipe, it'll be challenging. That being said, the food is still delicious and the staff is on hand with excellent music playing just loud enough to be heard but low enough that it is not bothersome.

Susan gets out of the limo after the woman she has been introduced to as Millicent. She is unaware of any reason to make an appearance when going into a restaurant. Instead, she walks inside, thanking the person holding the door and following the others to their table.

This is a nicer place than I thought I'd ever eat at in MercTown. How strange. I thought everything would be sepia toned and covered in dirt. This is hardly a hive of scum and villainy.

Examining the menu and keeping an eye on the room, she responds to Analoy, "Honestly, if you could replicate this, you should leave the team and open a restaurant. From what I understand, chefs are rarely shot at."

Susan pauses and then lets out a strained cackle. "Wine first, please!"

She orders the scallops to start, followed by the sweetbreads. "Did you know sweetbreads come from two organs in calves that disappear by the time they become adult cattle? It would be like aliens eating human wisdom teeth.

"And yes, Millie, I would love to share the other organs with you."

When her first glass of wine arrives, Susan downs it and signals for a second one.

She drains the new glass and orders a third. "Yes, obviously the spybot is spying on us. It can't be trusted and we have to assume that, from now on, any of our electronic equipment left in the hangar is compromised and that the hangar itself is compromised."

She looks at Millicent. "Unless you are from a different dimension with technology equivalent to the Naruni, I sincerely doubt that you will be able to disassemble or otherwise override the spybot without our employer knowing. That would be equivalent to Lucy claiming she can reprogram the communication of a god to its priests because she can do magic."

Conditions: Looking fabulous in her silver dress with her tinted goggles still on her forehead (and concealed and holstered inside her left leg, a Nuhr Rune Musket Pistol - let's all recall how the last outing went!)

Lucy gingerly clambers from the limo, allowing some gentleman or other to delicately provide support to her outstretched hand. Ah I see, this is what this impracticality is all about, she blushes a bit at the gentleman's smile and tries to not notice him ogling her chest.

Lucy glides to her table, trying to not noice the eyes being attracted to their entrance. She agrees with Milly that they should order the pan-fried foie gras, jerusalem artichoke cappuccino, pronounced "Foy-ee Grass", and eliciting the question "What's a jerusalem?" She also agrees with Susan's impulse to wine, pointing to the first one, the Marguet Père & Fils, Sapience Extra Brut Vintage 1er Cru, speculating that only in Merctown would one try to sell brut wine. "Such toxic masculinity," she clearly reasons.

As she sips her first glass, trying to look elegant and modeling what the groups two lookers, Amber and Jess, are doing with their pinkies, she listens to Susan, Milly, and Amber talk about Unit 8.

Amber Dach wrote:As they are being seated she has a quick word with Jez. Lucy huffs. "I done told that damn thing to stay by the door! Sounds like it ain't too good at following pretty simple orders. Probably not defective, but can't rule it out. The Naruni did say prototype, and if it's like some of the prototypes I've made in the past..."

Millicent Mayeux wrote:As Amber mentions her concerns about their guest, Milly agrees, with some confidence. ”It may be spying on us, but once I have a month or two with it… I will be able to tell you how it was made and what ever surprises it may be hiding from us. Either way, I cant wait to take that thing apart.”

"Agreed," she says through a bit of some food she cannot identify. "Though from what I've gathered what with the way y'all talk about these here Naruni, ol' Unit 8 might be a bit beyond my usual tech repertoire."

Susan Lee wrote:She drains the new glass and orders a third. "Yes, obviously the spybot is spying on us. It can't be trusted and we have to assume that, from now on, any of our electronic equipment left in the hangar is compromised and that the hangar itself is compromised."

She continues to chew, pondering at what this novel flavor is. "I'll have to get back to you about reprogramming the god-to-priest walkie-talkie. I mean, step one would be locating some implanted earpiece maybe?" She stops chewing, thinking momentarily, and then resumes chewing again. "Concerning whether anything is compromised, I guess we could do what Amber suggested back at the Hanger, and just ask it what it's tampered with. Maybe see if it's one of those truth-teller 'borgs?" She shrugs the way Amber shrugged. "Barring that, maybe I can cook up some kind of bug-detector? And I'm still thinking about ideas concerning some magitech team comms - assuming that's still a priority, Jess. They might be the kind of thing that Unit 8 can't access... unless its got some magitech in it..." she stops and thinking about Unit 8 some more. I don't recall seeing any gems stick'n out of it, but maybe they're on the *inside*. Her eyes narrow at this mini-non-revelation.

Once they do move on from Unit 8, she raises the question about tech priorities to the group via Jess. "So Jess, you being the boss here and all, I suppose it's up to you to tell me what to work on first. I know a couple of the GIRLS were looking to enhance their armor, but there was also some chat around about a backup magicomm system and Susan's magi-med kit. So you just let me know and I'll get to it!"

Megan slides out of the limo and instinctively takes a spot near the back of the group, conspicuously taking a look around, lines of fire, emergency exits, potential threats... (Detect Ambush 1d100 = 68/62%) She has to stop herself and try to let herself have some fun for a change. Fun. Megan thinks about the last time she had fun. It was the morning that Charlie was kidnapped. I was cooking pancakes for us when Charlie had snagged an already cooked one on the plate I was piling them on, and I swatted at his hand with the ladle I was using to scoop out batter, splashing some onto him. Everything quickly escalated to a food fight in the kitchen until Uncle Buck came to investigate what all the ruckus was about. Me and Charlie were deathly quiet, afraid of what Uncle Buck's punishment was going to be. He took one stern look around before quickly grabbing a handful of flour and tossed it at my face and the food fight started in full force again for the next five minutes. After we had settled down, I asked Uncle Buck why he didn't punish us and he said that the punishment was still going to happen, but he just wanted have a little fun with us before giving us the bad news that he was getting called into work a late shift tonight, which would mean we would have to skip our plans of going to the theater to watch a play.

The young Headhunter shakes the memory out of her head and decides she should act like she's having fun, and if somewhere along the way she actually does, then all the better. She puts a wry smile on her face and struts her way into Taste of the Town with the rest of the group, head held high and her breathing relaxed and natural. When she sees the menu, she is relieved to see that it is set up for those who are either illiterate or at the very least not literate in the local language. She slowly scrolls the menu and decides to try the dish with the bread and mushrooms (Sweetbread tempura, mushrooms risotto). When Susan mentions what sweetbreads are made from, Megan says "There are a bunch of foods that gross if you really knew how they were made, like cheese is really just a kind of moldy milk, and honey is simply bee vomit. Me, I prefer the phrase ignorance is bliss when it comes to food, so long as it as it is digestible by my body and does leave me feeling sick."

When the conversation turns to their unwanted acquisition, Megan calmly states "Of course we should think that it's spying on us, because sometimes the most dangerous weapon of all is information. Millie, even if you had all the time in the world to take it apart and had the ability to actually understand it, there is still the small problem of getting it taken apart. I highly doubt it would allow itself to be dismantled, which would mean that we would have to do to it what we did to the previous unit. Not sure how much you heard of what happened before it got into MercTown, but it was rough. Then again it was able to infiltrate us by means of deception, most of us were without armor when the attack happened. It was smart. It knew that if we were all fully armored and armed, it would stand no chance against all of us. It probably would have killed at least one of us. What it didn't have the ability to take into account was our bad ass fearless leader. Lucy, don't feel too bad about it not following your orders. We aren't the only ones who can give it orders. Remember our mysterious backer can give it orders that override what order we give it."

When Lucy mentions side projects, Megan reminds her "Don't forget about trying to recreate my Wild Weasel's ECM Jamming System."

ROLLS HELD

CONDITIONS: Still on boing-go.

Susan nods as Megan speaks, eating her appetizer as well as taking a portion of the shared appetizers and moving them around on her plate.

She adds, "A 'bug-detector' will help with the hangar, but we would need to have an extremely skilled hacker to detect whether actual devices were suborned. You don't need to 'bug' a device, simply reprogram it. It is undetectable externally."

To Jez, she says, "May I sample your meat, please? All the food seems exceptional."

She points at the restaurant's emenu. "For example, if that menu thing has a speaker, it could be turned into a microphone just with software changes. The issue with the spybot is what constitutes artificial intelligence. I had been studying this topic in preparation for being a good drone mommy and there are a number of levels of AI. It would be extremely difficult from an external standpoint to determine whether a robot were acting under its own sentience or simply following a complex program to pretend free will."

She pauses and downs her now fourth glass of wine. "Short of doing something obvious like killing its maker."

Susan then holds up her plate for everyone to see. It is a recreation of a sort of body, using the various organ meats that have arrived at the table and the scallops and donated beef and veal as muscles.

Analoy wrote:She looks to the other GIRLS as they look over the menu, "If you see something you like, let me know and maybe I can replicate it back at home."
Susan Lee wrote:Examining the menu and keeping an eye on the room, she responds to Analoy, "Honestly, if you could replicate this, you should leave the team and open a restaurant. From what I understand, chefs are rarely shot at."

The others having had the good sense to order wine, Jez makes sure that the wait staff recognize the need for each at the table to have a bottle of their own at the ready. With Susan's practical-minded reply to Annie's offer, Jez adds, "That's sensible thinking, Doc, but cooking isn't as exciting as fightin' an' dyin', is it, Annie?"
Susan Lee wrote:Susan pauses and then lets out a strained cackle. "Wine first, please!" She orders the scallops to start, followed by the sweetbreads. "Did you know sweetbreads come from two organs in calves that disappear by the time they become adult cattle? It would be like aliens eating human wisdom teeth. "And yes, Millie, I would love to share the other organs with you." When her first glass of wine arrives, Susan downs it and signals for a second one. She drains the new glass and orders a third.
Megan Price wrote:"There are a bunch of foods that gross if you really knew how they were made, like cheese is really just a kind of moldy milk, and honey is simply bee vomit. Me, I prefer the phrase ignorance is bliss when it comes to food, so long as it as it is digestible by my body and does leave me feeling sick."

Jez raises a glass in recognition of Megan's brief statement of wisdom. "Truer words, Meg," and lets her glass of red slide down her throat slowly and luxuriously.
Susan Lee wrote:To Jez, she says, "May I sample your meat, please? All the food seems exceptional."

Jez refills her glass and looks at Susan, "I was hoping you'd ask, cuz I'm plenty curious about everyone's dishes, but first..." Jez leans back, unsnaps the strap for the goggles around her face, and slides off her customary eyewear. Her brilliant ruby irises peek out at each of the GIRLS in turn. "It's an uncommon treat to see people on this world with my own eyes." She looks around at the lovely restaurant that's cordially lit and giving off a pleasantly warm ambiance. "It's truly lovely in here, and just look at all the beautiful, fancy people."
Susan Lee wrote:She pauses and downs her now fourth glass of wine. "Short of doing something obvious like killing its maker." Susan then holds up her plate for everyone to see. It is a recreation of a sort of body, using the various organ meats that have arrived at the table and the scallops and donated beef and veal as muscles.

Jez stabs one of the scallops with her fork and pops it in her mouth with lightning quickness. "Your body is missing a part," she says around a mouthful of buttery seafood.
Amber Dach wrote:As they are being seated she has a quick word with Jez.

Jez leans in very close to Amber and whispers in her ear. "I've been told in the past that you mind-benders can heal minds and memories as well as harm them. Is that true?" Jez's tone is very cautious, vulnerable, and serious.
Millicent Mayeux wrote:As Amber mentions her concerns about their guest, Milly agrees, with some confidence. ”It may be spying on us, but once I have a month or two with it… I will be able to tell you how it was made and what ever surprises it may be hiding from us. What we want to do with it however.” Milly lets the thought die in the air. ”If we are going to play nice with its maker then we should play nice with it. For now. Either way, I cant wait to take that thing apart.”
Susan Lee wrote:"Yes, obviously the spybot is spying on us. It can't be trusted and we have to assume that, from now on, any of our electronic equipment left in the hangar is compromised and that the hangar itself is compromised." She looks at Millicent.
Lucille Davis wrote:As she sips her first glass, trying to look elegant and modeling what the groups two lookers, Amber and Jess, are doing with their pinkies, she listens to Susan, Milly, and Amber talk about Unit 8. Lucy huffs. "I done told that damn thing to stay by the door! Sounds like it ain't too good at following pretty simple orders. Probably not defective, but can't rule it out. The Naruni did say prototype, and if it's like some of the prototypes I've made in the past. Agreed, though from what I've gathered what with the way y'all talk about these here Naruni, ol' Unit 8 might be a bit beyond my usual tech repertoire."

Jez sets her glass down with authoritative flair. "The android is not to be trusted, but neither is it to be molested. We will operate on the assumption that it is a hostile operative. That means systematically sweeping our gear for eavesdropping devices before we take them into the field. If either of you," Jez looks to Milly and Lucy specifically, "suspect some software, get my help. I'm no slouch in cyberjacking. It's a fundamental skill most special operators are taught in the A.D.F."
Millicent Mayeux wrote:The Operator is silent as she follows Jezebel and the others into the restaurant and is escorted to their table. ”This reminds me of some of the restaurants in Quebec I was told about…” The awe in Millicent's voice is apparent. ”This place is magnifique!” Millicent’s French accent bleeds through as he excitement for the restaurant continues to build. Then she sees the drink menu. ”oh! This is a place where you get to taste the wine until you find one you like!”

Jez sits back and smiles at Milly's excitement, enjoying the wine with her meal as she takes in the table of women all exchanging ideas. It wasn't so long ago that I was in her shoes. Desperate, hurting, and basically alone on this hostile planet. No one's ever really stuck around to become more than a passing friend, but after the last couple years I've grown accustomed to it. I hope these girls don't have to. Maybe we can make this unit something that will outlast me. A family that persists even after I've found my way home.
Lucille Davis wrote:"Barring that, maybe I can cook up some kind of bug-detector? And I'm still thinking about ideas concerning some magitech team comms - assuming that's still a priority, Jess. They might be the kind of thing that Unit 8 can't access... unless its got some magitech in it." she stops and thinking about Unit 8 some more.

"Lucy, it's 'Jez,' with a hard 'Z' sound, short for Jezebel." She wrinkles her nose at the woman's mispronunciation. I wouldn't have even noticed a year ago. My American has gotten pretty decent. I'm even beginning to think in this alien tongue. "You and Milly get the comms sitch squared away before anything else. Bad comms very nearly cost some of us our lives earlier today. That's unacceptable and preventable with some forethought. Let's get that done first, then get that cannon rigged up to your beast, Lucy. After that, your discretion, ladies. But I wouldn't worry about inventing a bug-sweeper, I'm sure I can go buy one in town."
Susan Lee wrote:She adds, "A 'bug-detector' will help with the hangar, but we would need to have an extremely skilled hacker to detect whether actual devices were suborned. You don't need to 'bug' a device, simply reprogram it. It is undetectable externally."

Jez winks at Susan's mention of a 'very skilled hacker,' her red eyes batting playfully and mischievously at the doc.
