As you enter the shop, you're amazed by the merging of two different styles of decoration -- medieval fantasy and 20th century commercialism. The walls are covered from floor to ceiling with well-kept wooden shelves full of handwritten books, scrolls, and even the odd stone or wax tablet. Freestanding metal shelves are scattered across the floor and hold more modern maps and field reference guides in print, data disc, and data crystal formats. In the very center of the room is a heavily warded glass case (careful examination also reveals either TW or a more traditional technological security system as well). Inside the glass case are three pre-rifts atlases, but there are no price tags displayed, simply a sign that says "Serious inquiries only." The shopkeep is a short (2 foot tall), lithe, D-Bee who radiates magic. He is assisted by his family in running the shop. He seems friendly and displays no obvious prejudice.

"Greetings" Beltin will say to the miniature man when he arrives, "My name is Beltin Delhomme of Heroes for Hire. I spoke to your wife not too long ago at the Haven. I believe I am expected?"

Once introductions are made, assuming that he is welcome and not immediately kicked out, Beltin will ask nicely for a copy of the security footage that shows a red-eyed version of himself stealing maps.

"Ah yes, Thaleen conveyed to me to expect you. One moment, please." The miniature man-figure hops down from the table on which he was poring over a cartographic reference to some area known as "The Yukon Territory" and rushes off to fetch his companion. Shortly, Thaleen arrives and escorts Beltin to a video screen where she engages with him in small talk while finding the right time stamp on the video surveillance recording that corresponds with the incident in question.

Beltin can clearly see his own image in the video, but notes a few discrepancies. It's difficult to be certain of certain physical dimensions via video recording, but he man who is wearing his face seems taller than Beltin--perhaps as much as half a foot taller, appears a little more robust in physique, and is wearing a stylish, if somewhat weathered, black duster the likes of which Beltin has never owned. He watches as his doppleganger takes from a countertop the floor plans in question when Taleen has her back turned, and runs from the building. Moments later, Thaleen and her husband are shown running out of the shop in pursuit of him. A few minutes later, they reappear on the video out clearly distressed.

"Hmm." Beltin muses as the video finishes playing, "if I am not mistaken, the culprit is perhaps half a foot taller than myself and has considerably more physique than the flimsy frame I currently occupy." The young mind melter pauses a moment before continuing, "Again, I wish to apologize for any inconvenience this is causing you. But if possible, I would very much like a copy of this video for my own records. It appears I have a nefarious doppleganger roaming the streets sullying our team's reputation."

Assuming they produce a copy of the security tape, Beltin will also jot down the team's radio frequency and suggest that they are welcome to distribute this frequency to any of the shopkeeps that the Badgerbolds may be friends with and if any member claiming to be Heroes for Hire patronizes the store that they are welcome to confirm their presence with the team as a whole.

Beltin will step to the side and convey this to the team by radio.

Heroes for Hire. This is Beltin Delhomme. Please be aware that I have given our team radio frequency out to Badgerbold's so that they, and any other shopkeeper they distribute it to, can utilize it to confirm the veracity of anyone claiming to be from our squad. It is a longshot, but perhaps might pay-off.

((Just need to know if they produce a copy of the security tape before Beltin continues his investigation.))

Thaleen is more than happy to exchange a copy of the video file in exchange for access to the group's non-encrypted coordination frequency.

"Thank you very much for your generosity on this matter." Beltin says, graciously accepting the video. "I am confident that with this help you have provided, we will be able to locate the thief and deliver them to justice."

The young mind melter gives the cartographers a warm and winning smile. "And again, please do not hesitate to contact us on the frequency I provided if you need anything or perhaps have any other clues that might help us solve this mystery. I know your time is precious and I will let you get back to your work." Bowing his head slightly, Beltin thanks them before heading out the store, video in hand.

I should head back to the Haven, but I think perhaps it would be better if I collected the evidence from some of the other stores.... Simon's in particular.

Perception: 1d100 = 85 / 64%
JiC d20/d100: 1d20 = 20 / 1d100 = 17

John enters Badgerbold Cartographers with a big smile on his face, looking around eagerly. "Taen, my friend! It's so good to see you again - it's been too long! And how is everyone in the family?"

I wonder how long it'll take him to notice I'm blue, now.

If the shop is empty, John will speak freely on the below topics, if there are other customers, he'll say "Is there somewhere a little more private we can speak?"

If Taen asks about John's altered appearance or comments on not having seen him in a year, John responds: "This was a gift from the Coalition. They locked me in the Devil's Gate complex and showed me some kind of energy coming through a rift. It seems to have changed the way I look, but left my mind intact, for which I'm grateful. Have you ever heard of anything like that before? I hope to one day repay their hospitality."

After the initial pleasantries, John gets down to business. "I joined up with a group called the Roughnecks, on a thing down in Mexico. I have some maps for you of that area and some notes for Atlantis and a short stretch of coast of South America."

Cartography: 1d100 = 33 / 60%

"I was hoping you might know someone I could buy some magic items from - something so that I can see invisible things, and general protections against magic and the supernatural. Some amulets, maybe." Then John lowers his voice. "I also need to get in touch with the Kingsdale Magical Guild. There's some things they need to know about. I could go down there and stand in front of the guild building, but I'm hoping you know someone who knows someone who can get me in direct contact. That seems... better."

One of Taen's diminutive relatives stands atop a book shelf conversing with a roughly dressed alien with a peculiar physique and an extraordinarily long neck. Another pair of Taen's relatives are engaging a trio of humans in discussion around a chart table with a couple of maps sprawled out across its surface, and another half dozen various individuals are perusing the library-like atmosphere of Badgerbold's shop. "Taen looks up from applying glue to the peeled back surface of a globe to see John. "Oh, hello, John," comes the small but oddly deep voice from the tabletop on which he's working. "It's been some time. Let me finish this minor fix and we can repair to my office for some brandy and a chat, eh?" After a minute of patiently waiting for the small man to finish his work, Taen hops down from the table and leads John back to his office. He never once mentions John's new hue or even appears to have noticed.

Taen's eyes go wide behind his little spectacles. "Oh, wonderful, I...well, you appear to have other business, so let's address that first over some Clompleberry Brandy. He levers off a rubber and brass cork from a bottle as big as he is, and half fills a tumbler for John and a cup the size of a thimble for himself. He clinks the cups together and says something like 'salute' without a hard, ending consonant, then tips back his thimble a bit refreshing himself. "Mmm, bittersweet clompleberry...a touch of honey's been added I think, nice touch. I got this in partial payment from a group who charted a strange, remote place known in some ancient sources as 'Yosemite'. I'm not sure their cartographic skills were very good though given the oddity of the described topography. So, what's on your mind?"

Taen pauses for thought long enough to finish his thimble before speaking. "As to Collegiate affairs, I can put you in touch with Figorro Noussaurin if you expect to spend a few days in town as he is often quite busy with Collegiate affairs and his own projects. He's rather full of himself as elves are wont to be, but open-minded so far as elves go. He is a planeswalker like myself, after all." He mutters something nearly to himself it's so quiet then speaks up, "As to amulets, they're rather uncommon, and this region seems obsessed with techno-wizardry, so it's even more uncommon around here, so I'd check out Dorian Segali's shop in the mystic quarter and see what he has on hand. His inventory changes constantly and is often a mish-mash, so your odds are better there than elsewhere in town. Failing that, make friends with and bribe a mage to purchase you some via the Guild itself." Taen says this last with a huge grin of mischief on his tiny face.

After a minute of patiently waiting for the small man to finish his work, Taen hops down from the table and leads John back to his office. He never once mentions John's new hue or even appears to have noticed.

John high-fives Taen's daughter on the bookshelf as he passes by - "Shayla, lookin' good girl. Have you been working out?" I wonder if I can learn to shrink, too? Is size-changing a skill? Mind. Blown.

"Thanks, Taen, it's good to see a friendly, non-vampire face. You all are busy today!"

John grows one foot, then waits and follows Taen to the back as described.

Augur wrote:Taen's eyes go wide behind his little spectacles. "Oh, wonderful, I...well, you appear to have other business, so let's address that first over some Clompleberry Brandy. John initially tries to show off by telekinetically lifting the bottle for Taen, but looks confused when it doesn't work, then brushes it off. He mouths the strange words before mouthing the strange drink. "Clooompleberry. Yo-se-might-eh?" He lifts his glass in a toast. "To you and yours, friend. I'm glad to see everything seems to be going well for you."

John grows one foot.

"Hey, how much are the atlases in the case going for? I'm a serious inquiry. Information, power, etc."

Augur wrote:Taen pauses for thought long enough to finish his thimble before speaking. Or does Figorro know someone in Kingsdale?"

As Taen talks about the amulets, John nods. "I'll check out Dorian Segali's. Techno-wizardy seems useful, but I don't think I have enough cash to get the kind of custom work I'd need." John grows a foot. "I actually know a guy who's in the Collegiate, so that's a good idea. Thank you, I have no idea what they're all about other than being a low-rent version of the Kingsdale guys. Hey, wait, are you a member of Collegiate? Is this what my feet taste like? Since I just put one in my mouth?"

"Oh no, openly claiming such a price places a standard on the value of a thing. There's good reason not to do that, the least of which is not encouraging theft or robbery. This isn't the Arms Bazaar where there's armed to the teeth security around every corner. We're in the Spokes, so a response by the authorities would be somewhat delayed. Still, we're mostly secure here unlike...I've let my mind wander. No doubt your team would be more interested in armed conflicts and the like given your chosen sobriquet. One would think the 'Roughnecks' above a task as mundane as updating some domestic trade routes and topography." Taen's voice suggests he's teasing John, but it's left a little vague as to what extent he's teasing and to what extent he's gauging the validity of his own assumptions.

John Altfeld wrote:"It sounds like I need to take you out drinking at some point in the near future."

ROLLS HELD

"I wasn't trying to insult you Taen, just offering a drink to a friend. I get it, though. You've got responsibilities."

John thinks about Taen's trade routes comment for a moment before replying. "Well, as I said, I can't speak for the rest of the Roughnecks, but if it's just mapping something out, I'm an able cartographer. But, if you don't tell me where you want to have mapped or explored, I can't ask the rest of the crew if they're interested, and, more importantly, I can't undertake it myself if our other work takes me nearby. I should be able to survey anything within 100 miles of one of our jobs without causing too much disruption. I think what they're most interested in is getting paid - they're not monsters only out for blood."

Taen smiles. "Particulars! Well, I can drown you in those. Those atlases up front are artifacts. They're collectibles. I've long ago scanned them. Those atlases are from an institution of the old American empire named 'Rand-McNally.' They detail ancient roadways, towns, and the other notable locations of this continent. Of particular interest are two distant outposts of the American empire known as 'Hawaii' and 'Alaska.' These were wildly different places, but both were quite remote places even at the height of the empire. They've never been updated."

ROLLS HELD

John's eyes go wide... "Alaska and Hawaii?"

"I'm not some off-planet rube, I know that Hawaii is the island chain where the grey-haired genie and his gnome slave grant wishes to guests and Alaska is north and is full of gold and snow- To Light a Fire is read to every scout in Kingsdale. I've seen both on an old map. I doubt that any job taken will lead to them, though. I'll let you know if anything comes up that would make that kind of reconnaissance feasible."

John pauses and thinks. "Is there something in either of those locations you think is special? The Germans, from across the Atlantis Ocean have contacts even here in MercTown. And I personally just set foot on another continent. Surely if some kind of civilization existed in Alaska or Hawaii, someone would have heard of it."

Taen shrugs. "They're extremely remote. They used to be the outermost bastions of the American empire. I'd imagine that in such a role they'd possess significant military resources and infrastructure. If any of that survived or has been reclaimed, it would be valuable to know." There's a twinkle in his eye as he gets back on the move. "And it's just tantalizing as a mystery. Time for me to return to work. Have a good day, John, and may your travels not be too safe."

Perception: 1d100 = 32
JiC d20/d100: 1d20 = 16 / 1d100 = 21

John walks in and goes directly up to the counter. "I'm back sooner than I expected. We got a job and I need maps, please."

He then holds out his computer to show the general locations he's looking for, without letting prying ears overhear. "It's this area. I think covering a 200 mile radius should be enough, if possible."

"Oh, and please make it the 'deluxe' maps with the danger locations, dragons, etc."

The shop is quieter than last time, with only Taen sitting at a desk. Taen looks up from fixing the broken spine of a new acquisition and raises an eyebrow.

"Twice in two days, I feel honoured John,"he smiles at the much taller man, putting the book down, "have you come back for that drink?"

John Altfeld wrote:He then holds out his computer to show the general locations he's looking for, without letting prying ears overhear. "It's this area. I think covering a 200 mile radius should be enough, if possible."

"Oh, and please make it the 'deluxe' maps with the danger locations, dragons, etc."

Taen breathes in over his teeth as he looks over the information John asks him for.

"Well, you do like to give me a challenge," he slips down from his high chair, his head not even as high as the top of the table.

"Hmmm," he taps his finger to his lips several times, "let me see what I have got whilst you take a seat."

He wanders over to a pile of maps carefully arranged in the corner and begins shuffling through, picking up one, shaking his head.

"No, not there, unless you want interstate maps from before the Apocalypse. Good for posterity and might show a few useful landmarks that are still relevant."

He wheels across a step ladder and quickly clambers up it, reaching up on top of a stack. He pulls down an old style bulky computer and brings it down before booting it up on the table he had previously been working on.

"Okay, your region you want information, almost nobody goes there, at least not that bothers coming back through Merctown. he scratches his chin as he waits for the machine to boot up.

"I have something but its not recent. A deserter sold it to me a few years ago, back from the days of when Chi-Town was not a bastion of jackbooted thugs, well, not entirely, but it is based on the campaign carried out there a good 80+ years ago. Based on military cartography, so it should highlight the basics. Its not going to help with any recent settlements; places have a tendency to move in the Magic Zone, so don't stay too long in any place near a leyline."

The machine beeps as it loads up.

"Let's say three for the old maps and 4 for a copy of the old CS map. You'll have to download a copy onto something. I only give you that last one because you are a friend John and because.." he hesitates for a second before continuing, "I have sold a few maps like the old ones recently to a few other people. Never had much call for that area before. Now, I've had more interest in the past few days than I have had since I open this place."

John nods. "Thank you. Any information will be helpful, even it's just landforms. I'm happy to pay what you're asking."

John holds out his card to pay the 7,000 credits for all of the maps, then waits while Taen finishes the transaction. "Actually... can you describe the people who bought the maps from you recently? And if anyone else tries to buy similar maps, can you give me a call to let me know?"

John then provides his radio frequency.

Taen looks at John and smiles, "Now John, what kind of shopkeeper would I be if I went telling everyone what everyone else was looking for? Some people buy maps for a reason. Some want to find things. Some don't want to be found. Either way it's not my business and I see to it their business stays their own as well." Taen writes down the frequency. "I can do this for you John. Should I come up with anything I think you might like or need, I will give you a shout. I like to treat my regulars well."

John shrugs, “I thought as much, but you can't blame me for trying . And thank you for the maps. Hopefully I’ll be able to give you some updates when I get back.”
