Ray the robot packs up the equipment as the funds are deducted from Lah'z universal account then William the Salesperson leads him to one of the empty side rooms and states "One of my associates will be here within moments." And with that, he returns to the salesfloor. It is not but a minute before a very large, gruff man walks in that Lahz would not instinctively thinks had any technical skills to speak of. The man places the test in front of Lahz.

"Alright, here be your test. Memory only, no technological help - the bot must remain outside the door. Questions, don't ask for no help is given on this test." Then he walks towards the door and prompts Roy to leave, closing the door behind the robot. He leans against the door and then watches the Psi-tech very obtrusively.

Lahz, though uncomfortable by the large man now staring at him, gives him no second thought as he buries into the test. The first portion of the test deals with Electrical and Mechanical Engineering. Lahz has a brief brain fart in regards to the Mechanical engineering though it quickly subsides and he finishes the section very smoothly. The second portion of the test dealt with Robot Mechanics and Weapons Engineering. There was another hiccup in the Robot Mechanics portion but otherwise the section went by smoothly. Lahz looks towards the gruff man still staring at him and hands him the test. He looks over it for a moment and then looks back towards the Psi-Tech.

"Well, your Weapons Engineering and Electrical Engineering is on par. Some hiccups in the other two segments but you performed well enough for a lack of study. You've passed." He signs the test and hands it to Lahz "Take it back to Will, he'll reprint you card." And with that the gruff man leaves without another word. Lahz can spot him going towards the back where the warehouse is.

Maximilian IV wrote:"Ruff! Err, I'm Maximilian. Salutations." Extending a hand to formalize the greeting, he puffs up before attempting to shamelessly promote his talents. "I'm hoping I can find gainful employment here, offering repairs, maintenance and upgrades to your customers. I have experience with a multitude of platforms, and can adapt quickly! Although, I'm more experienced repairing Glitterboy's. . . I can more than demonstrate my competencies to your satisfaction, of course!"

Standing sheepishly, Max finds his gaze trailing off towards one of the Sampsons on display; there was something oddly enamoring about the design, it had a certain moxie to it. Catching his slip, Max pops his head back to the salesman and hops on his toes a bit - arms flopping at his sides. "So, how soon could I get to work?"

At the mention that Max is looking for work, he is guided away from the showroom floor and into an office in the back. There, he is told to wait a little bit as they grab the manager. Based on the fact that there are windows with a birds-eye view of the service bay, where all the hardware is being worked on, Max guesses that he has been ushered into a service manager's office. His hunch is confirmed when he spots a placard that reads "Bernie Macklan - Senior Service Manager". Bernie's desk is cluttered with piles of technical specs and time-sheets. Max can only guess at the number of different hats he must have to wear.

Five minutes pass and the operator's keen hearing identifies two people coming his way as the footfalls get louder. The door opens and two enter. One man with "Bernie" embroidered on his work-shirt, is covered in grease. Apparently, being a manager did not afford him the luxury of not having to work the bay. The other man is clearly an office worker dressed in slacks and a collared shirt. He carries with him a small stack of papers that covers up the spot where a name-tag would go.

"So!" Bernie says loudly, snagging a rag from the coat-rack near the door. "I hear you are looking for gainful employment. I'm Bernie Macklan, the service manager at this Northern Gun outlet. And that service bay is my domain." He takes a seat behind his desk and transfers large amounts of the grease onto the rag before grabbing the keyboard to his computer and typing loudly on it. "Behind you is Fergus from HR." The office worker nods politely when looked upon, but remains quiet.

"Ah.." Bernie says, apparently having pulled up what he was looking for. "Notes say you have some experience working a classic... Glitterboys." The heavyset man leans back in his chair as it squeaks in protest. Placing his hands behind his head, he adopts a relaxed power pose. "I'm afraid that's simply not going to cut it around here. We at Northern Gun manufacture cutting edge military and civilian hardware. If you want to work our systems, you have to be willing to buckle down and learn the complexities of the modern machine. That means not only will you need to know the mechanics, but you must know the circuitry and be familiar with computers as a lot of the system functionalities are buried there." Bernie 'tsks' in slight condescension by running his tongue over his front teeth, "To be honest, the job isn't for everyone. You have to keep your wits about you, always be ready to tackle new and complicated tasks and be willing to do what is needed. For the engineers that do call NG their home... they are amply rewarded, given a discount on any NG goods and can find work at any NG outlet simply by presenting their NGMCE card."

Bernie gestures at Fergus, "But to earn the card and the job, you must pass our NGMCE exam. Fergus has the study material. Learn it inside and out, ace the test and you might even get yourself a hefty signing bonus." The man breaks out into a wide grin. Max can't help but imagine that Bernie must have been one of those who earned such a bonus when he began. "I'm afraid the study material must remain here though. So if you wanted to study them, you will have to do it on-site. When you are ready to take the test, you can do so at your leisure. Simply come back and let someone know you are ready for the test. Remember, you have one shot to make a good first impression... don't blow it." Bernie flashes Max a wink.

If/When requested, Fergus will relinquish the testing material to Max. Unfortunately for the operator, part of Fergus' job description must be to make sure nobody steals the material. Like a shadow, he follows Max around wherever he decides to set up camp to study.

Perception: 1d20+2 = 21
J.I.C.: 1d20 = 9|1d100 = 46

Contingency: If the study-material is on a digital receptacle, Max will activate (Techno-Mind) to more easily digest.

Max is somewhat enamored when confronted with a pristine vantage of the service-bay, perhaps not overwhelming to those in the proper channels, Max was just a relative simpleton. Wide-eyed he seems more fixated on the work than the coming interview, after all, he spent the better half of his life obeying endless commands - rather than going out of his way to compete for them.

Back home there was more than enough that needed fixing. . . I never had to ask to be productive!

Max ponders over the workings -of the assorted of NG products- whilst waiting for this enigmatic manager. He was still unsure of the precise concoction for success in the human world, equal parts posturing and advertisement. . . he figured he was here now, so that's a start.

When Bernie and his HR shadow confront Max he has a hard time diverting his attention from the bustle of the service floor, fleeting glances towards the window last for a short while into the introduction. "Grruf! Salutations, Sir! That's correct, pleased to make your acquaintance!" Max is somewhat awkward with his greeting, enthusiastic but certainly clumsy.

He doesn't interrupt Bernie as he fetches his data, sitting in an uncomfortably rigid manor, Max trades glances with Fergus. When Bernie gives Max the ol' blue-collar bluster he sports a livid stare. In fact, he's so unsettled by the playful candor he nearly turns a cherry pink - or at least he would, if he wasn't covered in neatly trimmed poodle-floof.

Straddling the line between embarrassed and flustered at this point, Max abruptly stands and marches towards the desk extending a hand towards Fergus. "Rgggrr! Study material, if you please! Hmph!" It's hard to tell from Max's small stature, but his nose is stiffly elevated.

Once handed the necessary materials, regardless of quantity or format, Max will wander to the nearest couch and coffee-table, hunker down, and set up shop. Feverishly preening through the material he mutters to himself, and somewhat to Fergus. "Slightly over-engineered, but respectable. . . certainly isn't a USA-G10. . . or Golden-Age infrastructure, but respectable."

Needless to say, Max is settled for the long-haul. An oh-too-familiar piece of rock quartz is restlessly present, a mental focus for the cram session.

Max can't help but catch a smirk flit across Bernie's face when he eagerly requests the study material. He nods at Fergus who follows you to your study nook. After a time, Fergus gets one of his colleagues to keep a loose eye on Max as he continues to study. Time passes and the operator is excited to learn a lot of new things. Based on the material, he can tell that this is just a primer. There is a fair amount of the guts of the war machines that are notoriously absent from the study material. If he stops to ask Bernie about them, he will get, "On-the-job training." as an answer with a knowing look. It is clear that despite their security around the study materials that there is at least another tier of knowledge that one isn't privy to until working in the shop.

When Max is ready, he is brought to the testing area and is administered the exam.

Rolls needed:
Electrical Engineer (x5) (+10% for robot electronics, +5% computer operation, +5% jury-rig)
Mechanical Engineer (x5) (+10% robot mechanics, +5% vehicle armorer)
Weapons Engineer (x5) (+15% weapons systems, +5% field armorer)

After rolling, tally the number of successes and that number divided by 5 is your score for that section. The overall test score is the average of the 3 sections.

Max is certainly self-contained, so to speak, for the duration of his studies. All external distractions are waived off with relatively little effort at the beginning of his session, it was a learned skill. Too often the cacophony of machinery -aptly attributed to workshop environments- had to be mentally buffered to allow his thoughts to wander. As he further entrenched himself within the manual, his concentration began to wane, albeit ever so slightly.

Formalities, everywhere you go. . .

More or less the anticipation of learning a veritable host of new platforms was quite tantalizing. Although maintaining the famed Glitterboy was a pleasure in and of itself, Max had often dreamt of exotic hardware.

Suitably read, Max stands after what must have been quite some time - stretching he notices the new pair of eyes having kept a loose watch on his studies. Cracking the beginnings of a smile, Max realizes how terrible boring certain precautionary measures could be; his mind wanders to the hourly check-in's back home when you had to delve into the bowels of the complex. Necessary when the ancient environmental systems would get quirky. . .

Waving down the fill in proctor, Max passes on his desire to get started with the test proper. Getting right to it, Max realizes just how alien humans conducted themselves. You never had to prove your competence back home, you simply adapted to a needed role. There were far to few in his commune to turn anyone away, survival necessitated talent, no matter what that happened to be. . .

Wandering thoughts aside, this was the first official test Max had ever seen.

Well this is certainly. . . odd

Jez saunters back in to the showroom some few hours later.

When approached by a salesperson she'll simply state. "Take me to Francis." Once in his company, she'll go back over the deal as it stands. "80k store credit for the Gladius. We're agreed on that, so here's the claim chip. Have your techs finished their assessment of the powered armor suit? If so, what's their determination and your final offer?" Maximilian:
After completing the test, Max is told by Fergus to wait for a little bit while the results are processed. Thirty minutes later, Fergus returns and escorts the Poodle Operator back into Bernie's office.

There, Max finds Bernie perusing his exam answers as he enters. "Have a seat," the service manager offers immediately. "Looks like you did pretty well on our exam. A bit stronger with weapons than with electrical... though you were on the right track with a lot of these answers. I am prepared to offer you your own NGMCE card and gainful employment here if you so wish it. We have three career tracks and I don't see any reason why you shouldn't be allowed to pick whichever you prefer." Bernie sets down the exam paperwork and produces a tablet from the mass on his desk. A few touches later, he swipes across the screen and a duplicated holo-projection appears in the space between the two.

==============
Full-time career (40 hours a week. 2 weeks vacation per year. NGMCE for duration of employment.) -> Internship (40k credits per year) -> Engineer (65k credits per year. Additional 5% discount on purchases.) -> Senior Engineer (102k credits per year. Additional 10% discount on purchases) -> Management (150k+ credits per year. Additional 12% discount on purchases.)
-------------------
Part-time contractor (flexible hours/location. NGMCE discounted to 5k per year) -> Internship (25 credits per hour. +500 hours to advancement to next tier) -> Engineer (40 credits per hour. +2000 hours to advancement to next tier) -> Senior Engineer (60 credits per hour. Max advancement. Additional 5% discount on purchases.)
-------------------
Freelance (NGMCE discounted to 15k per year. 30 credits per hour. No advancement)
==============

"Regardless of your choice, your first year of NGMCE is on us. And whereas we would love to have you join our team. We understand that due to the nature of this New Paducah, many talented engineers are also juggling employment with the various mercenary companies in town." Once Max chooses, Bernie will shake the poodle's hand and direct him to Fergus for the remainder of the paperwork. Max will get his picture taken and security encoded onto the NGMCE card.

((Please include your career track choice in your charsheet when you add the NGMCE card. It is likely that someday this thread will get pruned, so you don't want to lose the info.))

Jezebel:
As the Arismal requests, she is brought immediately to Francis. He is busy doing some manner of office work, but is currently not servicing a customer. He lights up and welcomes Jez into his office. "Please, come in."

Jezebel wrote:"80k store credit for the Gladius. We're agreed on that, so here's the claim chip. Have your techs finished their assessment of the powered armor suit? If so, what's their determination and your final offer?"

Francis waits until Jez sits down before grabbing a stack of papers and setting it down between the them. He begins by fishing out and sliding a unique-looking cred-stick across the table, "80k store credit as we agreed upon." The stick looks to be shaped like some elongated derivative of the Northern Gun logo. Jezebel is confident that nobody would mistake it for a standard cred chip.

"The techs have indeed finished the glitterboy assessment." Francis continues once he has Jez's attention again. "The assessment is good. You are quite lucky to have acquired a suit in such pristine shape. We would therefore be willing to increase our initial offer. 7.5 million store credit, or 4 million universal credits. That's an extra suit of power armor above our previous offer!" The sales manager fans out the papers before Jezebel. On them is a plethora of technical data reflecting the assessment on the suit of power armor. The data includes ranges for "below-average", "average", "very good" and "excellent" quality. Jez's suit is sitting just on the "excellent" side of the interface between "very good" and "excellent". The Arismal has the sneaking suspicion that despite the quality of her glitterboy, that leverage is not on her side. And whereas the sales manager may be willing to pay what he considers 'fair' market price, he is not bending over backwards to make this deal happen. Jez is uncertain if she has any cards to play.

((Sell or don't sell as you wish. Nothing has been edited on your charsheet. Feel free to edit as you see fit once you make your decision.))

"I think I'll take that in universal credit, thanks. Here's my card to add the sum." She exchanges cards with Francis, then hands him the claim key to her Glitter Boy. Never even got a chance to drive that shiny suit. Still, it was too flashy for my tastes anyway. Too much like wearing a suit of overcompensated male inadequacy. She smiles wryly at her own thoughts as she collects her updated universal card. "It's been a pleasure. I think I'm going to go do some shopping on the sales floor, Francis."

After perusing the sales floor for a while, Jez has two products which have caught her eye and appeal to her sense of style. Standing in front of a showroom model of an NG-424 "Hornet" hovercycle, Jez leans her head back slightly and calls out loudly. "Somebody get over here and take my money!"

When a salesperson arrives, she'll state plainly that she wants one of these sexy beasts with a solid oxide engine, as well as a black, faux-leather NG Streetwolf Armored M.D.C. Combat Trench Coat which she saw elsewhere on the sales floor.

NG Streetwolf Armored M.D.C. Combat Trench Coat: Cost: 16,500 credits; Add 3,500 to 7,000 credits to the cost for faux leather or custom colors/patterns.

Armored M.D.C. Combat Trench Coat or Long Coat

• M.D.C.: 36
• Weight: 10 lbs.
[i]Fundamentally the same as the Executive Trench Coat or Sharp Duster except this coat has heavier armor in the lining plus external armor on the outside of the coat. Re: Northern Gun Store (108)

A brash young man comes over. His name tag says 'Drew Olsten'. "Sure I'll take your money. Why wouldn't I? What was it you're looking at?" She states what's she's after and he thinks a bit. "Seems a bit plain doesn't it? A woman with fire like you needs some custom flames. I can have it baked into the paint so it only comes off when the armor itself does? It's a bit pricy, but worth it if you ask me. We can make that coat match as well, either a small one on the front, or large logo on the back. Or both. Difference is price. Baked and etched in like that takes some doing, so it's normally 5000. Something like that on the coat, in faux leather would be upwards of 7500. But if you let me use the same design on both, I can let it go for a cool ten grand, universal. Sounds like a deal right?" His smile is winning and he even sounds sincere in talking about her as a woman with fire inside. Of course he has no clue how true that is. He presents a final ticket price of 281500 universal, with the mods.

"Drew, your words are like a song bird's sweet...oh who the frak am I foolin'? Yeah, Drew, I'll take the logo on the back of the ride, but I keep my clothes free of such stuff. Five kay for the logo on the vertical stabilizer then?" Jez fishes out her old A.D.F. insignia and flashes it long enough for him to scan it. "Put this on the vehicle, and you'll make me a happy, repeat customer."

He smiles. "Done! Where shall we have it delivered? It's going to take some time to get it done, but we should be able to have it to you within 8 hours. You're welcome to either pick it up or I can deliver it later. I can have the coat ready in ten minutes or so."

Jez hands over her recently acquired NGME card with 80k store credit, and allows Drew to deduct the remainder from her Universal card.

"Nice doing business with you, Drew. Tell Francis he can enjoy a bottle of his favorite poison with an easy mind tonight knowing he made a good profit for his masters this day. Ta-ta!"
She grabs the coat and claim ticket for her new ride and sashays out of the store.

A girl has just got to pamper herself sometimes. Hmm... She whips out her MTE cellphone and looks up the Merctown directory for the closest spa and sees mention of Klingmar. She hoofs it to the spa.

Invoke Trust -- 65% | (Critical Success - EP expenditure) (To sway Bernie with poodle moxie!)

Max stands overlooking the workshop as Fergus moseys off with his finished test -quite used to distracting himself in such moments- yawning, he glosses over a few scattered thoughts. He hurries past several that pertain to the possibility of failing, accompanied by an unnecessarily catastrophic walk of shame off the premises. Shaking off even the possibility of failure, Max tames such invasive thoughts by focusing on the veritable wonderland of technological goodness just below.

Fascinating, their hardware is so. . . new. . . there's enough ordinance here to supply our scout parties for months!

Enamored by the multitudes of cutting-edge merchandise, Max snaps his head when Fergus calls him to discuss his results. Hurriedly he follows the man into Bernie's office. Trotting hastily to keep up with the much taller Fergus.

When proposed the various offers of employment, Max looks over the offers and doesn't take long to decide on the Full-time commitment. . . the thought occurs to him, however, that it might take some measure of negotiating to make those numbers palatable to his current cohorts. "Rruff! Err, Bernie-- I'm more than pleased to take on a full-time obligation. However, I'm contractually obliged to service a private contractor as well; you see we severed ties -honorably of course- with Titan industries, with nothing but our reputation. Is there any way to conjoin the hourly requirements as an NG employee with the occasional outing?" Snapping his fingers in a quintessential eureka moment, Max clears his throat before giving his inaugural sales pitch - there's a first time for everything!

Popping up on his toes, Max gestures with a subtle torquing of his wrists, a couple of points here and there for good measure, and a few enthusiastic "big picture" kinesics. "Is it possible to meet up with NG customers in the field?! Rove around when I have a contract, offer certified repairs or sale vouchers to an untapped market? There might be stranded merc's in desperate need, or even foreigners that have never heard of NG products - come to think of it, I just learned about you. . ." Looking a bit surprised at that last bit, hoping Bernie doesn't take it negatively, Max clears his throat again and continues on in his spiel. "I chalk that up on a supply and demand curve and I get a smile face, see." Max literally sketches a labeled S&D graph smile face on his sketchpad and shows it to Bernie. "Oh, and profit."

Depending on Bernie's receptiveness, Max will energetically shake the man's hand, clasping it awkwardly. "Thank you, Sir! I promise I'll be a great addition to the team!"

Following Fergus to hammer out the formalities, Max happily fills out what's required of him - unused to the concept of a photo ID, he smiles gawkily. Proud of his accomplishment he ogles his new card with pride before walking out into the lobby; just in time to overhear the last of Jezebel's sale of the esteemed Glitterboy. . .

Aghast, Max laments the irony of having literally been that close to finagling (at least by his father's standard) a Glitterboy. Almost raising a finger in protest, Max quickly bites his knuckle in a forlorn, existential reflection.

I wouldn't have the funds necessary to halt Jezebel in a decade. . . oh, cruel world. . .

Heading to the salesman, Max sheepishly chimes in - "Grruff! There's no chance I could earn that Glitterboy with work credit, is there?" Asking more rhetorically than not, Max heads out to purchase a cellular device on the earlier advisement of Jezebel.

"Done and done," says the clerk. As he's about to leave Barric sees an advertisement for cell service. It's a hell of a deal and he signs up for a years contract at the low low price of 1000 creds

Perception: 1d20+2 = 4
JIC: 1d20 = 20 / 1d100 = 31

The NG store is something of a letdown after Naruni Enterprises but given what they wanted to sew on a holster John was sure he didn't even want to know what a couple NE shirts might cost. While he does spend some time "window" shopping in the rifle section he ultimately doesn't select anything and keeps mostly to the electronics and basic provisioning areas.

NG Basic Survival Pack w/ 3 MDC bag 2400 + 2000? WB34 p. 251
(overland backpack is 700, MDC version is 2700, so +2000 for the MDC version)
Ear Mic 2200 Merc Ops p. 110
Optics Glasses w/ Nightvision, HUD & Polarization ?
(Merc Ops p. 119 has optics glasses w/ nightvision & polarization for 4300, WB32 has HUD Glasses for 1000)
Toughbook Tablet Computer 2500 GMG p. 186
Reference Libraries for Science/Technical skills (8) 200-400 ea = 1600-3200 GMG p. 186
Misc Clothing & Personal Items 1000 (don't feel the need to get too detailed on this, clothes and grooming items)
Optics Band 800-1200 GMG 189
Hammock 50 GMG 181
Tarp 60 GMG 182
Pencils (dozen) 6-8 GMG 182
Sketch Book (100 sheets, hardcover) 8-12 GMG 182
Total (without glasses and including 2k for the MDC backpack upgrade): 12,624 - 14,630

Clarify wrote:Please pick which Subjects on Disk you want: Basic Electronics, Basic Mechanics, First Aid, Swimming, Climbing,
General Athletics, and the equivalent of all Domestic, Science and Technical skills (some, like Lore and Law, may be broken down by different countries or continents).

For Science skills Archaeology and Anthropology. For Technical I need History: Pre-Rifts, History: Post-Apocalypse, Lore: Dimensions, Lore: Demons & Monsters, Lore: Magic, Lore: Mythology, Lore: Religion, basically reference materials for Johns lore nerd skills. As much as possible I'd like general instead of region specific but if it needs to be region specific I'll take North America.

Clarify wrote:For the basic survival pack - I am unsure what you want. The cost of the survival pack is probably more for the contents than the bag. So if you want the MDC overland backpack as well, then let's call it 5100

What I'm trying to get is an NG Survival Pack (2400 credits) in an MDC bag (2000 credits). The reference to the overland pack was just as an example of the cost of upgrading the bag from SDC to MDC. An SDC overland bag is 700 credits, an MDC overland bag is 2700 credits. If you want to rule that I need to buy both then fine, but it seems like an obvious upgrade NG would offer even if the book authors hadn't thought of it.

Clarify wrote:The text for the Optic Glasses in Merc Ops is a bit vague, it says various models are available, but I think that the $4300 is for a single enhancement - otherwise, why not just say it comes with x y, z for $4300. So for the 6 possible enhancements, that would be 6 x $4300 = $25,800. Which do you want?

Now that I think about it the Optics band can do nightvision and stuff anyway so just forget it and I'll take the HUD glasses for 1000.

Clarify wrote:My search-fu is weak: WB 32 is Lemuria, where is the HUD listed in there?

HUD glasses are actually WB34, not 32, my error.

OOC: Let's add digital libraries for four more technical skills, Lore: Faeries & Creatures of Magic, Lore: Geomancy & Ley Lines, Lore: Psychics & Psionics, and Lore: Vampires. If you're gonna call yourself a para-arcane specialist you may as well go all out.

Perception: 1d20+2 = 21
JIC: 1d20 = 7 / 1d100 = 70

John pays for his purchases with his universal card and, thankful for his preternatural strength, gathers his purchases and heads to his final stop. I remember reading once about a spell that anchors a small dimensional pocket within a bag, may need to look into that to hold all this.

OOC: See if it was me I woulda just said okay, you have a grooming kit and a bunch of clothes. :salut: Collapsible top hat? lol And 12 handkerchiefs of various colors but no socks... :?
