Down Came the Rain and Washed the Spider Out

Postby Ace of Spades » Tue Nov 12, 2019 10:12 am

A rough looking man bristling with weapons stands just outside the Merctown City gates looking impatient and very pissed off. He is obviously in charge of the group of six other men and women that look a lot like him although, carrying a lot less armaments. One waits in an opened set of power armor with the almost identical pissed off look the leader is giving off. A little ways away from the main group stands a young nervous looking man , possibly even a teenager. His look of youth and nervousness is in direct contrast to the rest of the group. He jumps and almost falls as the leader suddenly scratches out in a raspy voice, "Does Harold think we are going to wait all day? Where the fuck is the doc?!"

Spider stops at the MercTown Defender office and retrieves his gear and arms up.

He approaches the impatient and pissed off group: "Hallo" he says with a pleasant (practiced) smile.

"Unfortunately, Dr. Harold Buchanan is unable to join you. He has asked me to assist; therefore, I vill be taking his place. Dr. Ivanoff, at your service," he says to the man-in-charge as he extends his hand.

Spider looks over at the youngster.
Dr. Buchanan wrote:As you leave the shop he yells from the door, "Oh, the magic user looks really young but don't worry. He is like half Elven or something. He's really good. Absolutely nothing to worry about."

Molodomu predstoit tyazheloye vremya thinks the Vedmak. He has seen many men come to join battles, only to be chewed up and spit back out - and that's if they survived to tell the tale. Many didn't. Tem ne meneye, nikto ne mozhet skazat' ... he thinks to himself.

The man you assume to be the leader steps up and barely lets you finish before saying, "It's about fucking time!!!" Ignoring your hand he screams at the rest of the group, "Let's get this shit show on the road." He takes a few steps away before looking back at you and saying, "Sorry, I'm Walsh and I'll be running this little adventure. Thanks for coming along, it should be a simple job." At that he moves away and the rest of the group starts making there way to an armored APC big enough for Spider to fit in comfortably.

Once Walsh is done screaming at everyone, which seems to be the only way he communicates, the trip is rather uneventful. The APC takes the group about an hour away from Merctown and the crew gets a chance to get to know each other. Everyone is in a relatively positive mood as the trip carries on, with the exception of the magic user. He sequesters himself away from the rest of the group and seems to get more anxious the longer the trip progresses. The few attempts made to engage him in conversation is met with one word answers or standoffish replies. In the end everyone leaves the man or half man to himself.

When they reach their destination Walsh starts bellowing orders and everyone quickly starts prepping themselves to move through the rift. The magic user steps outside and starts what everyone else can only assume is the process of opening a rift. It takes a very long time and a few of the other members of the group start to point out that they have gone way past the time frames these kind of things usually need. The magic user is now covered with a huge sheen of sweat and his pallor has gone almost milk white. Walsh gets up to move closer to the magic user with that same pissed off look on his face when a crackling and popping sound splits the air and a rift opens up right in front of the APC. With a nervous smile and nod to the group, the Magic user says in a very quiet voice, "There. Just like I said I could. This will put us down right where Buchanan wants us." The smile disappears and look of consternation replaces it as he adds, "Everyone should go separate. Not inside I mean...I mean not inside the APC...walk through individually...then the APC."

Walsh steps forward and grumbles about that being a waste of god damn time but says he'll be the first to go. Without much delay he steps through the rift and is gone and the rest of the team forms a queue in front of the rift. That nervous smile appears again on the magic user's face as a few more team members start to go through. When Spider steps up to the portal, the magic user isn't even looking up but has his head bent in concentration the sweat flowing freely as he seems to be mumbling under his breath. Stepping into the crackling energy has a weird feeling but the really unnerving part comes as Spider starts to feel himself pulled away, he can hear the magic user say, "Fuck, Wait...stop...come ba..." The rest of the sentence is cut off as Spider feels his body pulled into 20 different directions. The sensation of falling and spinning soon overtakes Spider and he feels as if he will never stop this disjointed motion he is being subjected to.

As quickly as it started, the feeling stops and you smash into what feels like water, leaving you incredibly disoriented and confused. When you are able to rise you find yourself in a large puddle of water, in the dark, and being soaked further by pouring rain. You can't see Walsh, the rest of the team, the APC, or the magic user in the general vicinity.

What do you do?

Spider nods silently and gets into the APC. He's seen enough military and merc types to know what's up. This guy is just the next one in a long line.

"Fuck." The word is said in American. After all, nearly everyone knows how to curse in American - it's almost the standard for cursing.

Spider gets up, wipes himself off as best he can, and gets his bearings.

Gde, chert voz'mi, ya? YA znal, chto etot rebenok vyglyadel shatkim ... YA pogovoryu s nim, kogda vernus' ... thinks the Vedmak as he replaces his lifelike simulated eye in his modular eye with the Multi-Optic one, switching on thermo-imaging, nightvision, and targeting display, to get a better bearing on where he is.
Multi Optic Eye features
includes the following optic systems built-in:
  • Telescopic: 4-8x30 magnification; range: 6000'
  • Macro Lense: 2x to 8x magnification; range: 3'
  • Passive Nightvision: 2000' range
  • Thermo-Imaging: 2000' range
  • Light Filters: reduces glare like Polarized optics
  • Targeting Display: +1 to strike with any ranged weapon

Translation
Where the hell am I? I knew that kid looked shaky ... I will talk to him when I get back ...

The Vedmak then gets his TX-17 at the ready, and reaches for his military GPS... oh shit, he doesn't have one. "Just like you, Ivanov... forget the von thing vich matters most," he says out loud in a self-deprecating manner.

Spider will sweep the entire area with his optics, and - if he can see clearly that there are no heat signatures for 2000' feet, only then will he proceed toward... whatever he can see that looks like any sort of shelter or man-made thing.

If Spider sees thermal signatures of anything other than what appears to be common animals, he will use his telescopic feature to zoom in to see what it is and see if his IFF system picks up what it is.

Gromeko Friend or Foe Identification Computer
Used for Enemy Profiling. Can identify up to 200 different cyborg designs, armors, and insignias of known Russian, European and Asian cyborgs, plus 600 monsters and demons - each rendered in full color with schematics indicating known weaknesses, armor, weapons, powers, etc.; capable of rotation and zoom to key features.
This program is designed to be a passive, silent Friend or Foe Identification System. Words, or symbols for the majority who cannot read, are displayed on the internal optics of the cyborg similar to a HUD display, to indicate the friend or foe based on the subject's mechanical design, identifying markings, physical appearance and supernatural nature (i.e. Gargoyles, demons, Necromancers, Witches and warriors from rival Camps are all designated as enemies).
The enemy designation is also reserved for known "human" bandits, D-Bees, and creatures of magic. If the threat is minimal, or the being is only a potential enemy (as is the case with unidentified humans and many D-Bees), the warning symbol is small and yellow. If the subject is known to be hostile toward humans or the War Camp, or known to be a powerful and evil supernatural being, the warning symbol is large and red. The complete profile on the being can be called up at will in words or sound bites. Visual icons also indicate key classifications including Cyborg, Robot, Demon, God-being, Dragon, Human, D-Bee, Animal, Entity/Ghost, Elemental, Evil Sorcerer (Witch, Necromancer, etc.) and Unspecified Supernatural Being (i .e. they exhibit supernatural powers or magical abilities but are unidentified). In addition, the FFI System indicates the being' s relative power level on a scale of 1-10; a flashing 10 means its estimated power level is off the scale!

AGM: I realize this is a Russian system, but many of the the foes this system would recognize exist planet-wide - the only things that would be regional-specific are Cyborgs, Robots, weapons, and military design/markings

Spider scans the area with all of his optics as he lets the disorientation from the rift travel wear off. All optics are working perfectly and but the rain and darkness makes things very difficult. After a few extra seconds of concentration the cyborg is able to make out partially destroyed buildings sporadically spread out around a clearly large dig site. The hole is large, about 50 feet by 50 feet and there are pieces of tools and implements scattered around the hole. With a little more reconnaissance from his current location, Spider realizes that almost all of the metal parts to the buildings and tools are missing. Zooming in to closer on the hole reveals all that missing metal is sitting in a large pile, dead center in the middle of the large crater. There is no indication of anything living or moving in any direction within your optics range. The only place you are not able to scan is the far side of the pile of debris in the middle of the dug out crater. With a small amount of movement parallel with the debris field, Spider picks up a few very faint heat sources low to the ground but difficult to identify.

Hmm... what is that?

"Look alive, Ivanov..." he says, imitating, in his thick Russian accent, his favorite drill instructor, Pietrov.

He smirks and absently cocks his jaw to the side, activating his built in radio, and scans to pick up any frequencies.
Built-In Radio Receiver & Transmitter
A fully operational radio is built inside the head. Channels are switched by working the jaw and transmissions are received directly in the ear identical to the cybernetic Headjack. The cyborg can send transmissions by a mental command and quietly talking out loud. A microphone is built into the jaw. Includes scrambling and decoding technology. 20 mile range
Note: Includes Radio Chip (Advanced), upgraded to pick up wideband and broadband (up to 1,000 frequencies)

if Spider hears anything recognizable, he will try to listen in and figure out where he might be based on any languages or clues spoken (built-in translator).
Language Translator
Has the following languages:
Spanish, Japanese, Chinese, Dragonese, Gobblely, Faerie Speak, Demongogian, Mongolian, Greek, American
98% proficiency when listening to 2 or fewer speakers simultaneously

Drops to 22% if listening to more than 6 people simultaneously

If he picks nothing up, the Vedmak moves toward the metal at a slow, cautious walk, taking a basic ready stance (rifle in hand) and wondering what caused the pile of metal to come together, and not really seeing anything else of interest in the area to check out, keeping the multi-optic eye sweeping and scanning the area as he goes, and trying to track the shapes in the distance.

Spider spends some time switching through channels but in the end, finds no transmissions of any kind. He begins his cautious walk toward the hole and finds that as he gets closer he can make out the heat sources a little better. They blink in and out but are never bigger than the size of a average humanoid body. Spider can extrapolate what he is seeing with his optics as several humanoid sized bodies at the far side of the pit. The area is still mostly obscured from his line of sight, so he can't get a direct look.

When he is about 80 feet from the hole, his optics pick up a pretty drastic change in the air temperature directly in front of him. It looks as if a small cloud filled with cold air materialized directly in front of him. It begins to move away and Spider does his best to track it through the rain concentrating his vision on the moving blob but it is quickly lost in the falling rain and darkness. Spider is surprised to see a small chunk of metal come flying through the gloom directly at him. He is just able to move to the side and as the metal grazes his arm. Spider is quickly able to determine that there was not enough force in the projectile for it to cause any lasting damage. Looking back up, you see another chunk of floating into the air from the pile in the center of the hole.

What are your intentions?

The Vedmak looks at his arm. "For-tunately, only cosmetic..." he says out loud as his expert eye assesses the minor damage. He quickly calculates the repair cost, with a mental note to add said costs to the bill he presents to Dr. Buchanan for this "quick trip."

"But... vhere does it come from? And vhat is going on with these heat signatures?" he then says, looking back into the rain and darkness.

He decides that, perhaps, he is being perceived as encroaching on someone's territory - and decides to go around the crater instead of advancing directly toward it. He backs away about 20' give him an approximate 100' distance from the metal pile and floating chunk (and, hopefully, de-escalate whatever it is that is attacking him or feeling threatened), and begins to circumvent the crater instead, always keeping at least a 100' radius, wherever possible, from the area where the metal came from. As he does so, he switches back and forth visually between the chunk/metal pile, and the thermally-registering images to see if there are any changes in either, while being ready to avoid any more flying metal chunks.

Several more chunks of metal come flying in your direction but all are easily avoided and would have caused no real damage had they hit anyway. As you start to skirt the crater your optics are able to pickup a much clearer view of the heat signatures. There are five humanoid sized bodies laying on the far side of the crater, all of which show little to no movement. As you are honing in on the bodies, the sound of screeching metal breaks your concentration. Looking back to the pile of metal, several large pieces are pulling free of the tangled mess and moving out in your direction, they move past the edge of the crater and stop about 40 feet from your position. It's hard to keep track of all the pieces as they swirl around the area in front of you and the rain seems to pickup its intensity the more you struggle to see into the gloom. The pieces all start to interconnect and seem to become one larger chunk of metal. After a brief moment a humanoid shape beings to become clear as all the pieces slam into one another forming a mismatched robotic body:

The body carries no visible weapons and stands about eight feet tall. It's movements are very deliberate and do not seem to be slow or reduced due to the massive amount of metal it is made up of. The robot-like body breaks into a run directly at your position.

What do you do?

Chto za chert? thinks the Vedmak as the patchwork "robot" forms in front of his very eyes. He glances at his Gromeko Identifier, but whatever-it-is does not seem to register, and he has little knowledge of monsters or demons - just the Brodkil, which he has seen up close.

Translation
What the hell?

He looks over at the bodies showing up on his thermal optics.

Ochen' malo aktivnosti ... mozhet byt', oni zanyaty? Ili pryachesh'sya ...?

Translation
Very little activity... maybe they are busy? Or hiding...?

As the metallic monstrosity charges, Spider will fire his TX-17 in hopes of blasting whatever-it-is apart before it tears him to pieces. He has no idea why it is attacking, but he's not going to try to interrogate the horrid thing as it doesn't appear to be in the negotiating mood. (OOC: attack rolls above)

Problem rolls here, ignore please- Dice Roller was not playing ice
