Background Story


Bettie Houser was born October 5th, 85 P.A. and raised in a small town in Southern Free Quebec. Her father, George Houser served as a Glitterboy Pilot in the Free Quebec military but his 4 man squad was listed as MIA more than 11 years ago. Her, Hannah Houser, mother had been a stay at home mother up until that point, but after losing her husband she talked to George's former unit and soon had a job in a Glitterboy assembly plant. Eight years later she was killed in an accident at the plant however, leaving Bettie on her own at the age of 19. Bettie blamed the Free Quebec military, most specifically the Glitterboy units, for her parents deaths and with no family left she took the benefits payout and money her mother had saved up and left. Several months later she ended up in Kingsdale, spending most of her time drinking and feeling alone. Not long after arriving she bought a small local Juicer bar from it's previous owner, who found being around the super-soldier's too stressful after so many years. It wasn't really planned, she just happen to be there one afternoon having her "morning" drink and heard the owner complaining about the damage a fight the evening before had cost. He swore something about packing it in and selling the place and Bettie, without really thinking about it, said she would. Four hours later and down roughly 80% of her remaining funds Bettie found herself the owner of the place at the age of 20.

About 4 years had gone by and the "Rough House" was doing quite well. Bettie had replaced all of the interior walls and furniture with light weight by sturdy M.D.C. equivalent fixtures. The windows were barred up with M.D.C. re-bar from both sides to keep them intact as well. She had also started to brew and distill her own beers, ales, and alcohol in order to give her enhanced clients stronger drinks. Bettie however wasn't doing so well. Her life style of drinking and sleeping with a new male every few weeks had finally caught up with her. At the Kingsdale hospital doctors diagnosed her with having a unknown alien virus, one they could not find a cure for. Not even magic healing worked on it fully, only slowing the viruses spread. The disease was almost cancer like, except that it was destroying her existing cells and tissue and replacing it with what the doctors would only call necrotic tissue that seemed to be still alive somehow. Receiving the magic version of treatment was reasoned to be successful in the long run, but would take months or possibly even years of regular administration to work. The cost was prohibitive for such a long running treatment to say the least.

Bettie found all this out over the course of several weeks and by the end of that time she was back to where she had started 4 years ago, alone and depressed. She had kept the bar open, but was leaving most of the work to the five female employee's she had on staff, where normally she ran the bar itself and just had them serving as waitresses or restocking the bar itself. She sank deeper into depression and drank pretty much non-stop. Some of her friends who stopped by couldn't get her to cheer up, others weren't sure what to say but stopped in to try and say hello. Debra Lee was one of her regular patrons from the Valkyri mercenary group however and after hearing what was going on, she had a suggestion for Bettie...become a Juicer or at least go and talk to Regius, the man responsible for creating the Dragon Juicer variant. Bettie spent the next several days thinking about this, sobering up and really thinking about it. She went and spoke to Regius, who ran some tests on her and the virus she had contracted and in the end he reasoned that yes the conversion process would either; A. Eradicate the virus completely or B. Slow it down to the point where she would 'burn-out" as a Juicer long before the disease did any further significant damage.

Bettie experienced one good piece of luck in all this. One of her other friends and regular patron was an ancient Royal Frilled dragon calling himself Choy, who enjoyed the interaction of humans and other mortals...plus he liked to hustle Juicers, Crazies, and Borgs in feats of strength for a good laugh. He almost always gave the money back once it was discovered who and what he really was, or at the very least he used the money to buy drinks for all. All this being said, he had heard of not only Bettie's condition but she got into a discussion with him about the Dragon Juicer process. At first he was upset at the road this turn of events was taking her down, as it was mortals lived such short lives and he knew that the Juicer conversion would mean she would be gone that much sooner. On the other hand, the virus she had contracted was killing her anyways and the doctors were giving her 9 months to a year at the most. In the end he advised her to go through with it and offered his blood for the process.

Three months later Bettie had finished acclimating to the conversion process and was still attempting to run her bar. But she was having trouble, she was having nightmares of a sort where she saw herself...eating dragons, or dragon flesh at any rate. A few weeks later she began feeling sick and went to Regius for a check up. He found nothing wrong and suggested that some subjects did show a tendency towards increased mental instability. Bettie wasn't sure what that meant or what to think, but Regius said it should pass in time, but to come back if she got worse. Two days later Bettie woke up in the morning to find herself caked in semi-congealed blood with no memory of the past evening. She nearly panicked and ran downstairs into the bar, but calm down, washed, and changed clothes. She decided to keep the incident to herself for now and later that evening was glad she had. A couple of full conversion borgs who were part of Kingsdale's Armed Forces were talking about a dead dragon hatchling they had found a couple miles outside of town. They talked about how it's chest had been ripped open and it's heart was mostly missing...along with most of the dragons blood. Bettie began to panic again and in what is probably a stroke of luck she ran into Choy when she tried to leave the bar to take a walk. At first she wanted to hide the truth from him, but Choy somehow saw her thoughts and offered to walk with her.

It did not take much prodding on Choy's part to get Bettie talking and in short order she had told him all she knew. Using his psionic abilities he was able to see in her mind what she could not remember. She had been the one responsible for the hatchling dragon's death and had ripped it apart with her bare hands...before drinking it's blood. Without telling Bettie what he had seen, Choy took her directly to Regius and in private told Regius what had happened. Regius for his part admitted he had heard of this sort of thing happening with subjects of Dragon Juicer conversion before. Unfortunately he did not have any idea on how to fix it. Bettie however had heard the entire conversation and left, heading back to the bar. She stopped at the bar long enough to gather all her liquid assets, a few personal items, her armor and the one pistol she owned, then got on her hovercycle and left Kingsdale without a word to anyone. She headed southwest, but not before stopping at the next town along the road. She had made up her mind to try and tie up lose ends and to that end she had several letters transcribed. The first was an apology to Choy for what she had done to his kin. The second was a final (in her mind) thank you to Regius for giving her longer to live. The third letter included a contract signing ownership of the "Rough House" to Choy with the promise that he would keep on the 5 girls currently working there.

Over the course of the next 3 months Bettie slew two more dragon hatchlings when the craving for dragon's blood became too much. She now recognizes the signs of the craving and has come to terms with never being able to control them. With that in mind, she has decided she will limit her hunting of dragon's to ones that are evil and has her own code of conduct, so to speak. Bettie's path has lead her inadvertently to MercTown. Staring at the wall's of the city she shrugs, revs the cycles engine and heads for the gates.

Bettie's Code:

1. Track down and kill any evil dragons without mercy.
2. Do not harm good dragons, protect them when needed.
3. Do not harm children or those who are non-combatants.
4. Show no mercy to your enemies, let none survive or escape.
5. Avoid Kingsdale if at all possible.
