Morning Debrief
    Date: June 10, 109
    Time: 0530
    Temp: 70 degrees
Weather: Outside the city it is raining
Ley Line info: There are multiple ley lines in the ruins of Old Chicago 80 miles away, but none in Chi-Town itself.
Location: Level 1 of the Chi-Town Joseph Prosek Memorial Military Fortress, Briefing Room

There is no one in the briefing room when they get there at 0530. It is a very austere room with a triple row of 15 seats forming a half circle around a central podium with a projector screen behind and to the left of it. On a table near the back, coffee, juice, tea, water, and soda are available, as are breakfast sandwiches (eggs, bacon, cheese, ham, and beef in various combinations), fruit, and pastries. Of note, Ford is not here, but there is a new guy with them, PFC Jericho by his tape. Both Howlett and Freeman have emails affecting the EOD specialist's transfer to third platoon.

Jericho is greeted by the sight of a hodge-podge of personnel that can only be a described as special forces. A cyborg-ed up scarred with the rank of Second Lieutenant, a huge battle cat, a dogboy, and a collection of human soldiers.

Each Special forces company is made up of four platoons of special forces. Aside from a squad of eight to twelve, each platoon also includes another fifteen to eighteen support personnel who never accompany the unit into the field. Some are located at CSID headquarters, acting as liaison and intelligence resources, and others act as transport pilots, medical, and motor pool/supply personnel. This is first platoon. Each platoon is stationed in different places. The Second is stationed in Fort Resilience, the Third is on detached duty in a classified location, and the Fourth is currently assigned to the Minnesota occupation zone.

Image
At exactly 0525 a man walks in with the three silver bars of a Major on his collar. As he enters, he walks to the front of the room, at the podium/computer there. He is silent, other than acknowledging an "attention" with a simple "Carry on, briefing starts in 5." He otherwise busies himself with the computer, pulling up files. The screen behind him is blank. His unit indicates he is in the intelligence division. A toothpick is in his mouth, which moves slightly as he types at the screen with deftness and purpose.

At 0530 exactly, he looks up to see if anyone is not in their seat. Assuming none are, he nods. "I am James Smith, your liaison with ID and High Command. General Floyd is on his way to Chi-Town by high speed transport so he can attend a ceremony held in your honor at 1700. But right now, none of that matters. What matters is your debrief and your new orders. For now listen, and I will open the floor for questions."

Video Debrief of Lieutenant James Howlett
Lone Star
The call for the CS 110th to go to Lone Star, came in on the heels of a demonic invasion of MercTown that was thwarted by the efforts of the 110th and several dozen mercenary companies (as in groups of squad strength or higher, not actual company strength). The team arrived in Lone Star via Death's Head Transport. Once there the team was greeted by command and tasked with dealing with a lost experiment from the Genetics Facility. The operation was rather text-book, ending with apprehension of the creature with only minor damage to the 110th. Following the operation the 110th was given the task of retrieving the Artifact (Fetish of Cosmic Awareness). The team was given an information packet that allowed the 110th to create a basic plan on how they would head to meet the Papago natives. It was decided by Captain Taveres that the 110th would disguise themselves as mercenaries heading west in search of work. To that end the Lone Star motorpool procured for us a confiscated mark five APC and loaded it with necessary gear for surviving the trip into the western states. It was here that Service Specialist Mane joined the team.

Roswell
The town of Roswell was a pit stop in consideration with the rest of the mission here we picked up supplies and gathered some information. Though on the way in we were attacked by a robotic Tyrannosaurus Rex, we managed to defeat the robotic creature, but due to our mission could not stay and study it. While at Roswell, I encountered a doctor working for a local Black Market outfit named Janet Halstead, who was wanted for questioning about several murders out of Northern Gun Ishpeming. It was here that Private Johnston was found out to be a psychic and Sergent Taylor were taken away from the group for various reasons. It was here that Service Specialist Sanders joined the team only to quickly disappear along with Service Specialist Dunbar. An effort to find them came up empty.

Apache Incident
The team made way from Roswell with little incident, but during the trip along the edge of Apache lands, the 110th received a distress call from another Coalition unit being attacked while on convoy duty. The 110th swept in to help in driving the raiders off, which were supernatural enhanced Apache Indians and their dinosaur mounts. They also had several pieces of tech that resembled SAMAS power armors. Once the fighting was over the Unit's leader was tasked with other duties and Private Caesar and Corporal Toretto were attached to the 110th via long distance radio communication.

Gallup
Gallup would have been another pit stop on a strange journey, if not for the 110th uncovering a Vampire plot in town. The team spent a few days uncovering the plot and how to best deal with the situation. It was determined that another Coalition Unit, tasked from Operation Holy House would be best suited to deal with the vampire threat. Once the operation was decided, Captain Taveres was tasked with staying behind to build-up CS relations with the mildly isolationist people of Gallup. It was here that I was given command of the CS 110th SOG.

Papago Indians
The 110th eventually found the Papago Indians, at their home camp. I personally found them to be a good people if not for their use of shamanistic magic. It was brought to the 110th's attention that the Papago were assaulted by the Shadow Warriors and several important members of their tribe were kidnapped/Taken prisoner, including most importantly the Tribes Shaman who was the only one who knew the location of the Artifact. The 110th having been tasked with the retrieval of said Artifact, had to amend the mission parameters to include rescuing the Tribe's Shaman. Four members of the Papago tribe were attached to the 11oth to act as guides, scouts, and added firepower. The 110th made way to what had been identified as the Shadow Warriors forward camp. The 110th made camp in the ruins of a Pre-Rifts church. It was from here that the 110th made first contact with the Shadow Warriors. They were armed with Kittiani model power armor and used alien jungle to mask their presence. In the end it did the Shadow Warrior's no good and their Power Armors were destroyed by missile fire and air support.

Shadow Warrior Camp
The Shadow Warriors were entrenched in a well fortified camp that had good sight lines and well maintained guard routes. Half of the 110th left with two of the Papago to infiltrate and take out the camp, while myself and the other half made way using a crumbling highway route. Mission reports determined that the Papago infiltrators proved invaluable to capturing the base camp, leaving the Shadow Warriors with no access to their available resources. It was here that several POW's were freed including Corporal Maddox. Several prisoners were captured as well, though only one was kept for questioning due to both time constraints and our inability to contain so many prsoners they were divested of all their gear and sent running. The Mage who we captured was questioned, which gave us both intel on the goings on of the enemy encampment, and the connection to Lord Vilargo's plot. She was then executed and disposed of in a manner that would make resurrection nigh near impossible.

Return to the Papago
The teams escape was facilitated by stealing a Gliterboy Transport, which was used to skylift the Mark Five APC. Upon return to the Papago Indian's camp, the 110th spent several days re-outfitting the Glitterboy Transport by cannibalizing the Mark Five APC and resources from a nearby ancient junkyard. During this time POW's assisted the 110th in both this task and decryting a stolen computer for information. Once the information was acquired it was surmised that the Artifact had been stored in an abandoned Pre-Rifts Facility, also retrieved were the coordinates of the Shadow Warriors main camp. Communications were made to Lone Star and plans were formed allowing a joint strike on both the Facility and the Shadow Warrior's main camp via air strike.

Facility
The Facility was a local manufacturer, who was in contract with the American government to build drones. In this facility the Shaman of the Papago people hid the Artifact. A brief issue with security and the team made way into the facility via side entrance. Inside the facility still was active but mostly dormant, once the Artifact was acquired it came to the teams attention that a unit of the Shadow Warriors was approaching. Using all resources available the 110th engaged and defeated the Shadow Warriors, only suffering the loss of the POW's and several pieces of equipment, mostly armor and ammo. Artifact secured, the team mounted and made way to Roswell to report our success.

Video Debrief of Lieutenant John Freeman
Sitting in the chair across from his superiors Freeman can’t help feel this more like an interrogation than a debrief. Each person interviewed separately, no chance to meet together, a formal atmosphere. The Lieutenant could almost feel the threat hanging in the air - if we catch you in a lie you’re career will suffer.

Taking an easy, almost non chalant posture the intelligence officer gives a terse but accurate report.

“We covered a lot of ground after leaving MercTown. Pretty uneventful until we got near Roswell. At that point we encountered what we assumed was a dinosaur, until it breathed fire. My undercover armor was toast at that point,” Freeman smiles at his own toast joke before moving on. “Big takeaway from that encounter is that the dino was a robot...with no operator. When we got to Roswell I asked around, found out that’s not unusual. Robots disguised as something else that attack people who get too close...sounds like further intelligence gathering is needed.”

“In Roswell we resupplied, had a personnel transfer that almost saw take on class D mutant. Fortunately that crisis was averted. Turns out Roswell is a big black market supply depot. The Ambassadormthere tippedmusmoffnthatn the market bugs their gear. Be a hell of an operation to crack that code...we could have drones fly over an area and immediately know what black market weapons are in use. ISS would be doing cartwheels.”

Leaving out the part about cultivating a new asset, Freeman moves on to Gallup.

“En route to Gallup we crossed Apache Territory. There was a hell of a mix of magical and high tech gear in that encounter. Much better equipped than our initial intelligence estimates. Including SAMAS units. During this encounter we recovered, and absconded, Toretto and Caesar. They did well and proved valuable.

“Gallup itself should be well documented. We stopped in for rest and resupply and uncovered vampire activity. Since it was our mission we called it in and blew town. I assume the operation was a success given the intel we were able to provide.”

“After that we made contact with the Papago. This lead to us racing the Shadow Warriors to search for the location of the artifact. We managed to ambush some of their forces. It was a tough fight but we did it. This action lead us to the Shadow Warrior encampment where, assisted by some savages, we conducted a successful smash and grab raid that netted considerable intelligence, the rescue of Corporal Maddox, and destruction of enemy assets,” the Lieutenant stops to flash a cheeky grin, “we picked up a sweet ride too.”

“With intel from the raid and the Papago we determined the location of the bunker where the Papago chief had hidden the artifact. We suspect this is a high tech facility of pre-cataclysmic origin. It recognized our authority and was instrumental in safely recovering and defending the artifact. Thanks to air support we faced a small element of the Shadow Warriors at the facility. From what I can tell this entire mercenary unit is now at zero combat effectiveness.”

Leaning back in his chair Freeman casually puts his hands behind his head and smiles at each interviewer.

“To summarize, we went overland across half the continent, destroyed an enemy mercenary force of extra dimensional origin, recovered a Golden Age weapons factory, and put a world destroying magic mask on ice...and everyone came back alive.”

“That concludes my report.”

"Captain Tavares has been transferred from the 110th to what has been termed Operation Holy House, a vampire eradication program operating in Lone Star, the Pecos Badlands, and the New Mexico and Arizona badlands. I can report 100% eradication of vampire assets from Gallup, and the area is on its way to eventual protectorship. I can also confirm that all Shadow Warrior assets that were operating out of the locations you gave us were destroyed or captured. But unfortunately it wasn't nearly enough to be 100% of their forces, or even 50%. Based on intelligence projections we're estimating 25% total losses, which is still significant. We also captured a part of their overall command structure, who is currently undergoing interrogation. So good job all around."

Video Debrief of PFC Egan Grey
"Arrived at locations as ordered by my superior officers, engaged in combat with the enemy and killed them. Succeeded in assigned mission and returned to base for new orders."

He glances to Egan with what can only be described as disappointment. "While accurate, I'd prefer more intel in my intelligence debriefs from someone with your experience Mr. Grey. Please do better in the future." (OOC: Out of character circumstances acknowledged, just giving you some grief.)

Video Debrief of Specialist Mane
Mane stood before the monitor and replied as honestly as his recollections and Howlett's earlier warnings would allow.

"After leaving Lonestar, saving me from the tedium of more manual labor, I was placed aboard the APC heading towards Roswell. We were heading there to explore an intelligence trail and hoped we could find actionable intelligence, either there or among the denizens of the U-Mart. On our way there we were attacked by what initially seem to be predatory T-Rexes. However, they turned out to be giant robots able to breathe fire and possessed an array of other weapons at their disposal. It was against these targets that I used my rail gun against the enemy combatants when I popped out of the top hatch of the rear turret, firing at will until they disengaged. Exposing myself to enemy fire was an afterthought... My sole intent was to expedite our escape and evasion.."

Mane paused, and then walked over to the beverage dispenser. He continued to talk as he began to fetch himself a cup of coffee. The mug looked comical in his large hands, but he handled it with poise and dignity. As he walked, his bare feet made virtually no sound on the hard floor.

"While I was not privy to exactly what intelligence was gathered at the U-Mart, it was there where, along with the cyborg Sergeant assigned to our unit, I modified my body armor to help blend in with the Special Forces Unit so I would not stand out as a Coalition soldier; instead appearing to be more of a mercenary, fitting the team's cover. While there the Sergeant and I were able to establish contact with a potential confidential informant in a place of ill-repute. A woman named Melinda. Though she offered intelligence of only minor significance to the mission, her vocation places her in a prime position to overhear local gossip, bragging, and slip-ups, making her a potentially valuable asset should future missions send me that direction again."

Mane returned to stand in front of the monitor to continue his report. He took a casual sip from his coffee before speaking again, and even made a silent, approving nod of its bold flavor.

"While in transit we received a distress call from Coalition units under attack. Wasting no time we diverted the APC and charged headlong into combat to rescue downed pilots and civilian personnel. They were under attack by the Apache forces in New Mexico that you asked about. The firepower at disposal of the Apache was no joke, but we were able to effect a rescue just the same under heavy fire. It was there that we picked up corporal Toretto and the dog boy Caesar. Fortunately, the Apache withdrew their forces instead of pressing their attack any further."

"Intelligence gathered by the commanding officers put us on a vector towards Gallup. The moment we entered the town we could feel a vibe of unease throughout the air. It was clear the town was xenophobic and leery of all strangers, well beyond what one would normally expect in that part of the land. We eventually parked by a repair shop run by a father and son adjacent to a cafe where they sold some of the most delicious food this side of the Domain of Man."

Mane paused for another sip of coffee. This time he also inhaled its steamy aroma and made another approving noise.

"You know, you guys serve up a surprisingly good cup of Joe." he added, straying from his report.

"Anyhow, we investigated the town and came to the conclusion that it had a significant vampire problem. In fact repair shop we were at had a sprinkler system installed that ran at nighttime to ward off the blood suckers. That's where I came across and was given the Holy Bible that I turned in before the brief here. When facing vampires, any edge is a blessing. Seeing that the vampire problem was beyond our capabilities, and would most likely derail us from the mission, Commander Howlett made the call to remanded it to other forces to deal with."

At this time, Mane began a slow, thoughtful pace in front of the monitor. Again, his bare feet made no sound like the stealthy predator he was despite his size. The warmth of the coffee was soothing, while the caffeine helped him recall and think on his feet.

"Before leaving Gallup the commanders were able to secure our next destination, or at least the route we were going to take. The plan was to join up with a supply convoy to slowly make it through a dangerous patch of wilderness; however, that plan was scrapped the moment a situation arose."

Mane pressed his lips thoughtfully as he strained to recall what connected the next string of events.

"Following the trail and intelligence leads the commanders had to work with... again, which I was not entirely privy to... We ended up at the Papagayo Village, or as you put it into question, the Retro Savages of Arizona. It was there that I became aware of our opposition; a group known as The Shadow Warriors, who turned out to be Atlantean soldiers on a mission much like our own. It was at this point that I was made aware of our true objective finding the evil magic mask of power and vile corruption."

Mane stopped his pacing as he was about to get to the juicy part of the story.

"Learning of probable ill-intent by the Shadow Warriors, who by now had become aware of our existence in the area, the commander set up an ambush of where we could engage them on our own terms. When sprung, the fighting was quick and fierce, but thanks to the firepower of the APC and the fighting tenacity of our men... not to mention the element of surprise on our side ... we ended up being quite triumphant, suffering no losses, while the Mark V did end up taking quite a beating."

"Using a piece of captured technology of a Shadow Warrior's dead body, I was able to use my psychic gift of Object Read to gather first-hand intelligence and observations on our enemy. It was clear that they had an encampment of mostly Kittani Warriors and we're lead by an alien woman who stank of magic. She was barking orders to a Kittani officer and it was clear that the two did not like each other. Sensing that the psychic eavesdropping may have been detected, contact was dropped immediately. Armed with that knowledge and the scouting's of the Papagayo people, we planned our attack."

Mane finished his cup of coffee and placed the cup down on the floor, enabling him to now speak with his hands as he became more excited with the story.

"The attack on their camp was well-coordinated, and as quick and furious as possible. The attack was preceded by a clandestine infiltration, where high-explosives were rigged to their unattended suits of power armor, and allowed our people to get in position within their ranks. It should be noted that much of the success of the attack can be credited to the man we rescued there, Karl Maddox. Being a POW there for God knows how long, he was able to jerry-rig a simple communications system, which he used to alert us to his presence there. He provided us with on-site recon and gave our people a decent diversion at great risk to his life."

As he spoke now, Mane's hands pantomimed out the action, nearly stepping on his empty coffee mug in the process.

"The word to attack came and I, Corporal Toretto, and Caesar flew in as the Airborne element. We laid down a heavy suppressive fire with missiles killing several combatants in the process. But the objective of the mission was not necessarily to kill, but to rescue the pow and retrieve any intelligence discovered on the site. Killing a shit load of skeeby D-slime was just a happy means to that end. During the thick of the fighting, I landed and personally apprehended the commanding magic user, draged her to the vehicle we were going to use to make our escape from the area before kittani reinforcements could arrive. That vehicle being a captured Qubecois Glitter Boy APC. I am sorry to report that the magic user's arm and many of her pumpkin-head bones were broken in the process of dragging her to the APC like a rag-doll, and deafened her with a roar to subdue her into submission."

For the apology part, Mane's tone was clearly sarcastic and bordered on being bragados. He smiled with pride at the grievous injuries he inflicted on the alien spell caster. But then added...

"And for the sake of the written transcript, that last part was strictly sarcasm. Feeling her bones crush and crumble beneath my grip, and seeing the fear in her eyes, was almost as delicious as the food that restaurant at Gallup."

Mane recomposed himself and continued. Picking up his empty coffee cup, he began to return to the coffee machine.

"As expected the Kittani reinforcements arrived, and they gave chase. Corporal Toretto and the rest performed admirably in the air battle that ensued while I was at the helm of the Quebec APC. All that I could do for the most part was make evasive maneuvers to try to keep our prize out of their clutches. Again, Mr. Madox proved to be an asset as he was able to activate most of the ship's weapons and instruments, much more, bypassing the security system that would have barred up from taking off in the first place."

The sound of the coffee machine refilling the cup sounded as Mane took another pause in his report. With the dark brown nectar renewed, Mane resumed.

"I must report that shortly thereafter my personal relationship with Mr. Maddox became strained. Due to the particular and peculiar circumstances of his capture and subsequent rescue, I entertained the idea that he might be a clever plant. While he did not exhibit any supernatural vibes or smells that I could detect... nor did Caesar's superior senses detect... the notion that he could be some kind of double agent crossed my mind. There have been numerous reports of D-Bees and monsters able to conceal themselves for short periods of time, hence my suspicions despite outward appearances. Being in close proximity to a Ley line at the time, I was not able to discount the possibility. Following due diligence of my sworn duty to safeguard both man and mission, I reported my suspicions to the commanding officers and kept an aggressive eye on Mr. Madox until his identity could be confirmed through proper channels ... which it was, later. But during the intervening time, my actions were perceived by him as being overtly hostile and disrespectful to his human status. For my overzealousness, I have apologized."

"After we refit the Quebecois APC, arming it to the teeth with what we could salvage from the heavily damaged Mark V, we returned to the Papagayo Village to plan out our next actions. As it turned out, intelligence gathered during the raid revealed the area where of the mask of evil may have been located."

"With the final location in our cross-hairs, we took the new APC and flew to the site. There we landed roughly a mile away and marched through heavy forest on foot. Along the way we came across robotic surveillance technology that clearly was not of any design any of us knew. I took a psychic read of the robot, which revealed it to be from a large facility with no living people around. Proceeding down the path we ultimately came across that facility. It was overgrown with vegetation, well concealed by the forest. Once inside, we were able to acquire the mask with little difficulty."

"It was then that the commanders became aware that what was left of the Shadow Warriors had caught up to us with intent of taking the mask for their own nefarious purposes. Taking advantage of our superior knowledge of the terrain inside the facility, we set up a Kill Zone and waited for a mark to march in. They kindly obliged and we tore them to pieces!"

"After that we went back to the Papagayo Village, said our thanks for their help, and went on our merry. That brings us to here and now."

Once more Mane finished his cup of coffee. The comparatively tiny cup in his large hands was almost comical, but did explain why his coffee kept going so fast.

"Anything else?"

"Specialist, thank you for the breadth and accuracy of your report. In the future, please refrain from displaying your predatory urges in official reports. It might call into question your fitness for duty." It's quite clear what his opinion is regardless, judging by his somewhat sour expression. It softens some afterwards. "That said, thank you for confirmation of the events. It is appreciated." His tone can only be described as 'good boy.'

Video Debrief of Corporal Linus Toretto
Snoopy composes himself as best he can, approaching the microphone. He coughs a couple times, clears his throat, and absentmindedly smooths his hair to a properly even military grade comb. It's probably a video thing anyway, he thinks.

His thoughts still a little bit of a jumble, he figures he better just start. He reaches out and pushes "record".

"Sirs." He nods for a second caught between the desire to salute as he begins his report and the ridiculousness of saluting a machine. His experience over the last few weeks wins and he keeps his arms straight, fingers pointed to the floor. "The initial mission met with heavy Apache resistance. It was an ambush. The task force was scattered. My squad became separated. I learned later that they were all killed. As far as I know, I and the dog boy named Caesar are the only two survivors. They Apache knew we were coming, I believe. I presume. It's just what it felt like. I did not have time for much analysis, or the capability to do so in the field, so my hunch is the best I can do."[/b"]

[b]"Once we connected with the 110th, there was an adjustment period before I felt fully comfortable with them. At that point they were under a fairly extreme disguise and while their behavior in no way deviated from Coalition Military protocol, the trappings of their vehicles are armor were hard to accept at first."
Snoopy pauses, realizing he just walked a fine line. He doesn't have a script, and sometimes the words just come out, and backtracking would be even more suspicious. He forms the sentences in his head and "plays" each one sequentially instead of just coming out in a tumble. "At this point my grasp of designations and actual mission parameters were very basic. The 110th's officers were very careful to reveal only so much to Caesar and myself initially. We had several skirmishes, my role was piloting the PA-102XA assigned to me from initial mission. We encountered multiple groups, some of which were Apache, some were not. Magic and other illegal abilities and weapons were used by a variety of non-human and sub-humans."

Gallup was kind of a challenge, so much happened there. While he assumes this report is to include whatever top secret information he has, he has not been specifically instructed to reveal such. So he skirts it. "In the town of Gallup we provided assistance to the city government with an unofficial understanding, of the details of which I was not privy to, which allowed us to enter in force to rid the city of vile supernatural evil attempting to take hold. A variety of resources were marshaled to achieve victory. We annihilated the supernatural infestation."

"The Papago" pause, breath, pause, "I believe they were called were savages and magic users. I would put them, if it ever were my decision, lower on the threat list. Despite their misguided ways, they were not intent on expanding or recruiting. They even asked us if there was a safe place to move. I believe it was Lieutenant Howlett who responded brilliantly, 'Eventually the Coalition States will control all of North America. We are not in control of this area, yet.' sending the message that they will someday have to face judgement, but at the same time not escalating the situation to a conflict we would have not survived."

Feeling a little more confident after navigating that question, hopefully throwing up enough of a smoke screen that no one will dig more more details. The last part is fairly easy, or so he thinks. "The mission's success is the result of the dedication of the 110th SOG members, as diverse as they are, to the defense of humanity. Intellectually, I would have liked to know more about the mission parameters. I do not believe either Caesar or I were exposed to information we did not need to know. There is much about our objectives with the 110th that are still not clear. However, it is undeniable that we received adequate information to perform our duties. If I might add, as a final note, we seriously kicked a lot of deebee ass out there." That seemed to Snoopy a great way to end such a dry report - a report where he said virtually nothing.

"Corporal, consider your transfer to the 110th, first platoon, permanent. Thank you for your versatility and adaptation."

Video Debrief of Private Caesar
Sitting in his assigned room, the weight of a vibro-knife giving him a familiar comfort, Caesar helped himself to some refreshment and a long, comfortable trip to a proper lavatory. Sipping his Coalition standard coffee, equal parts dirt and methamphetamine, Caesar pawed at the computer display. The standard shorthand appeared of a dog with it's mouth open and a spinning disc, imploring Caesar to give a debrief and noting it was being recorded.

"While scouting in the Arizona wilderness, my unit was attacked by natives. Technologically sophisticated natives, uh... the Apaches, which had sophisticated arms as well as magic. My assigned C-27 Plasma Rifle was destroyed by hostiles and I was able to kill several tangos with explosive ordinance. The only surviving member of my unit was Cpl. Snoopy. With his help we were able to find the CS 110th Special Operations Group." Caesar sipped his coffee and for the first time in a long time thought about that idiot he was assigned to, who couldn't find true north without radio support from Chi-Town. No need to mention that, The Skull would find the obvious conclusion, and what did a Dog Boy's opinion matter?

Thinking about the 110th and his friend Snoopy, as well as his new friend the tank-like cat straight from Section 357 of Lone Star, Caesar went into the rest. He decided to keep it brief, as was preferred by the brass usually. They wanted to hear from the human officers after all.

"Then we came to a local human settlement full of supernatural influence. Descriptions of the monsters matched those of peasants near the Rio Grande river in Lone Star. Demons that looked like humans that only came out at night, that fed on blood. Damned good fried chicken in that town, though." Caesar had a sip of coffee. "Brass had us log the threat and move on."

"We then came onto another tribe of human natives which had intel on the supernatural artifact the 110th was sent to retrieve. Supernatural item was in an old Age of Man military bunker full of robots. Spluggos and Brodkil were dispatched to secure the item." Caesar drained his cup of coffee and immediately had to use the bathroom again. Just as well, he didn't want to commit the sin of providing details the officers left out.

"Private Caesar out."

Despite the coffee, Caesar curled up on the bed and caught a nap. The mattress felt luxurious after his time in the wilderness. If they wanted to know more, they'd ask. They always did.

"Thank you for confirmation of the events, Private. It is appreciated." His tone can only be described as 'good boy.'

Video Debrief of Corporal Karl Maddox
Karl is left taking some time thinking that one through. So much had happened so fast and he was having trouble recalling now what had actually transpired around the time of his actual capture. "We were camped for the night, Captain Chateuver had set out some pickets for the night. Mostly a mix of FQ and Triax troops with a few of our own sprinkled in. Colonel Heinz had gone out with Colonel Hendrik with most of our guys to check out a reported disturbance at a nearby village. I guess he wanted to get some idea of how the CS works over here before fully committing his NGR boys along side ours too much. Myself, Corporal Nadon and Sergeant Grimes had stayed behind to work on a damaged hip actuator on one of the Abolishers."

He pauses as he tries to think things through a little further and how best to word it all. "I don't recall any news coming over the radio from the advance team, but all of a sudden we were under attack on the south western and northern flanks. Mostly Kitanni tech with some of those crazy blind women and a couple of magic users. They then suddenly plowed into us from the West flank with their heavy units before half our bots were even ready to move. I think they must have been scouting us for a while before hitting us because the Abolisher I was working on was a primary target and they went right for the leg we were working on. Blew it clean off and pretty much vaporized Coporal Nadon in the process. Honestly it never stood much of a chance, we'd had to strip off most of the surrounding armour to get at the internals, so there was pretty much nothing to stop the incoming fire. So that more or less took it out before the crew could even get her powered up again."

Scratching his head Karl tries to recall more "Not too sure after that. Things got pretty chaotic. I know I didn't have time to suit up in my SAMAS so I just had the basic flight suit. Got a few shots off when the Abolisher's magazine must have cooked off. I just recall it exploding and then pretty much blacking out. By the time I came to the damn slavers had already implanted this controller chip thing in my head, an were still working on putting them into others. Private Jennings was killed when they blew his head off just to demonstrate they could set them off on the rest of us any time they wanted. Some sort of remote control device. But it wasn't just explosive, it was hooked up with a shock unit too, which they also were rather keen on using on us."

He takes a deep breath. "Not sure who exactly it was, but some one ratted me out as a certified tech, so they stuck me on repair duty for a FQ SAMAS that they'd recovered while they started shipping most of the other guys off who know's where. Was a few days into fixing it.." he pauses there "Though I'd managed to sabotage it a little without them noticing first..." and then continues "Then they started packing up in a real hurry. Left me and a few others behind to finish the job. That's when the 110th rolled in along with some of the Indians. I'd managed to hot-wire some of my kit to establish connection with them a little before that and then relied on my implanted radio to communicate with them via burst transmission from there."

He scratches at his head, wondering if he should mention how some of the Kittani fighters had been allowed to leave rather than being gunned down like he thought they should have been. "Uhh.. after that got picked up and a little while later after hopping into their transport Lieutenant Howlett managed to dig that implant out of my head. Most of the time after that was spent refitting the FQ Transport they'd recovered with parts stripped off their APC." another pause "I honestly don't think I've seen a more impressive hack job out in the field without even heavy lift machinery." he adds as an aside. "Then they got me kitted up and we went after the remnants of the Splugorth forces. Apparently they'd been after the same guys that hammered us.. or at least elements of the force that hit us. Following up on some leads they had we came across the bunker facility, which was apparently run by something called NEMA back in the day. All pre-rifts tech. Still functional amazingly enough, or at least a large part of it was. After gaining access to the facility, Private Caesar, Corporal Toretto and I snuck into the locked down R&D sector after I suggested to the Lieutenant that there would be a lot of valuable data to recover. Manged to get most of it downloaded while Toretto and Caesar covered my ass, then we high tailed it out of there. "

"By that point the Lieutenant had had the rest of the boys fortify the position to repel an attack by the Splurgoth. We used some of the weaponry at the facility along with a number of the robots to push back the assault and crushed them pretty good." he says, his tone picking up a certain bit of satisfaction at saying that. "After that I made a few copies of the data to make sure it wouldn't get lost and we headed back to the Indian village after locking the place down and securing the mask from the Armoury." he shivers a little at remembering the 'touch' of that thing. "Which, if I may be so bold to say, I hope someone finds a way to destroy. That thing is just pure evil." he rubs at his head again then hrmms "Pretty much a straight shot to the drop off point and then home after that with a little fly by from some bored dragon."

He hrmms "I think the most important stuff though is the data and tech that was uncovered. Apparently the facility used computers with bio-chips and had full fledged AI units that either were previously, or had become sentient. Seems they actually went haywire and declared war on each other. Used automated units to attack each other. In the end they either destroyed each other or eventually their containment units or power sources failed. I wasn't able to retrieve any functional bio-chips but even so, Lonestar may have the people capable of reverse engineering some of the tech. It would be a huge jump forward for us. Beyond that there's plenty of intact weapons, robots and power cells. Lot of that stuff is pretty advanced compared to ours from what I saw. More miniaturization, slightly better feedback and response times. That sort of thing. Main thing to worry about though is there's a number of tectonic entities still trapped in some of the rooms by a lock down procedure. So be sure to send people with the right training to handle them and not damage too much of the salvageable tech. Half of them are stuck in salvage dump rooms so that isn't a huge deal, but the rest are in the R&D wing and it's probably got stuff I missed."

"Thank you for the information on your old Unit, Corporal. All three nations lost some of our best. I'm only glad those that made you suffer ended up with such a final fate. You are hereby transferred to the 110th, first platoon, permanently."

"And finally gentlemen, may I present Private First Class Lyndon Jericho. He's the last surviving member of Second Platoon. They were sent after an item of interest that came to our attention while you were on your last mission. It is supposed to be tied to your mission. This is his debrief."

Video Debrief of CPL Lyndon Jericho
“Seriously, the input holo reader is broken? A video report? So I don’t have to go over a 20 page written report 18 times looking for errors? Is this what it’s like for the guys who can’t read? Just talk and that’s what becomes the record?

Right, I’m in a terror box where no one will respond despite the fact that I’m definitely being watched. Okay, report time.”

CS110-SOG After Action report
Section 1. Biographical and Location Information.
Author: Corporal Lyndon Jericho
Subject: Kingmaker
Deployed Location: Chi-Town
Deployed Personnel: Combat troops only.
  • Lieutenant Dan Taylor
  • Sergeant Willem Quinn
  • Sergeant John O’Neill
  • Corporal Keith Wolfe
  • Corporal Thomas Elias
  • PFC Leonard Jenkins
  • PFC Dillon Crawford
  • Private Cisco Werner (Psi-Stalker)
  • Private Dobbie (Dog Boy)
  • Private King (Kill Cat)

Section 2. Situation and Resolution Section.
Situation: Raiders of the Lost. Last confirmed possession of the gem.
Resolution: The Raiders like to sell themselves as a salvage crew, but everyone outside of rubes know they create most of the wrecks they salvage.

We set a trap and once they stumbled into it we moved in hard and fast. Support section set up a minefield in the water around some floating deathtrap. They’d set it up to look damaged and mined the surrounding water. Combat personnel waited below the surface. Support section waited to activate the mines until the Radiers were in the middle of the field. First one rocked them bad, but it took three more (one while they turned around and two on the way out) before the ship started listing with no power.

That was when we struck, came out of the water and worked through them methodically. They were so disorientated at that point they barely fired a shot in defense. 23 pirates secured alive, another 22 KIA. Between some creative asking and documents found on board we were able to confirm the artifact had been sold in Queensdale.
Situation after Resolution: A lead on the buyer secured, 45 pirates were killed. The Raiders of the Lost are no longer an active threat.

Situation: Commandeer Raider’s vessel and head for Queenstown.
Resolution: We took the Raider’s boat, after a quick repair job it was more seaworthy than the crap we’d lured them with. We figure out who they sold it to, some talismanmonger, Jakoby Tartan, who put it in a gold dragon statue at the request of his buyer.
Situation after Resolution: Leaned on him hard, should prove to be an asset in the future, but recommend periodic checkups to ensure he stays smart.

Situation: Finding the New Owner
Resolution: Jakoby provided a hell of a lot of details on who requisitioned on an account of wanting to not die. He descibed them and the iconography they wanted on the statue, Wolfe pegged them as the Cult of the Dragonwright. Lt. Taylor sent Wolfe, Jenkins, and Dobbie ahead to scout. We must have stirred something op, because a damned dragon came down on them. They barely managed to fall back to us, but when they did we let the bastard have it. Wasn’t too old because once he was real hurt he didn’t just teleport away. Still, if he’d been smart and realized they were fleeing to allies the whole fight might have gone another way.
Situation after Resolution: One less dragon flying around fucking up our world, still have the intel on the cultists.

Situation: It’s Raining Slugs
Resolution: Seriously, it rained slugs. Little slugs, big slugs, every now and then a slug the size of a fuckin dog. For hours, we were pelted with slugs. No water at all, just slimy little bastards. We got ambushed by a small group of bandits. The slugs had them confused and disorientated. Only way to explain five guys with no heavy weapons trying to stop us. Lt. Taylor pointed out the error of their ways and they surrendered.
Situation after Resolution: We weren’t exactly in a take prisoners position. Five less scumbags preying on folk trying to make a living.

Situation: Dragonwright Cultists Found
Resolution: We finally got to the cultists. They’d holed up in an old manufacturing complex or something. A warren of tunnels and mammoth open rooms with the skeletons of the machines that used to be. We pushed our way in, fighting for every inch. Jenkins was the only casualty, rushed a fortified position and got cut down as he unloaded his railgun into some crazy dragon/person hybrid. Not sure we’d have taken the bottleneck if he hadn’t done that. I know he’ll never be recognized as such, but man’s a goddamned hero.
Situation after Resolution: This branch of the Cult of the Dragonwright is eliminated, no idea if there are others. Artifact secured.

Situation: Hell Breaks Loose
Resolution: We were set, the artifact was secured on Lt. Taylor, all hostiles were eliminated, all with minimal friendly casualties. This would have been text book...cept nothing that happens in the field is text book. One minute I’m in my flight suit jury rigging repairs to my SAMAS to get it home, the next three more of us are mist. I take cover behind my SAMAS, start returning fire where I can but the fuckers damn near have us surrounded. Wolfe called them out as Shadow Warriors just before he was skewered by some kinda plasman encased lance. Lt. Taylor tossed me the artifact and told me to bug out, use a hovercycle and get home. My PDA chimed with what I’d later check and learn were authorization codes to get me home safely.
Situation after Resolution: We already had the place rigged to blow. Lt. Taylor just gave me 30 seconds before hitting the switch. I god damned hope it got all those Shadow Warriors, because I guarantee you none of ours survived.

Section 3. Summary and Conclusions.
Conclusion: Artifact delivered. Nine IDs accompanying them. Mission success?

I affirm that this information is true and accurate to the best of my ability,
Corporal Lyndon Jericho

“For the record, I’m never doing another written report, this was amazing.”

"First, Corporal Jericho, thank you for completing this very difficult mission and following the orders given to you in a very difficult situation. Your squad's sacrifice was not in vain. As you can see Lieutenant Freeman, we can definitely confirm the Shadow Warriors are still active. It is telling, however, that they could not effect pursuit of the corporal and the artifact. Corporal Jericho, you are hereby transferred to First Platoon."

"We'll go over the implications of what you all have found in a moment. Corporal Genet has been transferred immediately to Third Platoon. They need his expertise there sooner than later. Are there any questions before we move forward?"

James is a bit bleary eyed from his all-night reading binge. So when he sees coffee available, he quickly pours himself a cup. Looking to the food made available to the team, James grabs a plate and tosses a pair of sandwiches, some fruit, and a pastry onto it before finding a seat. James largely ignores the plate at the moment to quickly down the hot coffee, even going back for a second cup in less then ten minutes. Once the caffeine begins to do it's work James tucks into the sandwich, enjoying the fresh food.

When Jericho enters the room, James eyes the man with what can be described as clinical precision, before going back to either his coffee or food. Wonder who the new guy is? I assume they will inform me in short order. James thinks while quietly eating. When the Major walks into the room, James stands to attention. "Attention!" He barks out for the others benefit. James is relieved at the general laid-back manner of the Major, and sits back down. At least he didn't make us stand at attention forever. James thinks as he clears his plate of food and refills his coffee once more.

James begins to pay attention to the Major once he begins talking. James listens to each teammates debrief, pleased that they kept to what he asked. When he hears Egans Debrief, he stifles a chuckle. Going to have to reprimand Private Grey for that one. James listens intently to Private Jericho's debrief, making mental notes of what has been said. James is also saddened when Ford is transferred to a different platoon. It will be a shame to lose him.

Karl didn't waste too much time in grabbing what food he could and chowing down like a man who hadn't eaten in days. He'd had some good food near the end, but he still was in a bit of a mindset of 'get what's good while you still can'. It was kind of hard to shake off that attitude after what he'd been through no doubt. As such he mostly kept to himself while waiting for the debrief to begin.

When Howlett calls them all to attention he's as quick as anyone to snap to, and only relax when told to. If appropriate he even keeps eating like he's a bottomless hole though at a much more sedate pace so he can properly listen to what's being said. Of course one bit in particular stood out to him above all the rest.

CS High Command wrote:"You are hereby transferred to the 110th, first platoon, permanently."

"Understood sir." he replies smartly, though inwardly he had very mixed feelings about the reassignment. On one hand he'd have preferred assignment to a more 'professional' special forces unit, but on the other, the 110th, while on the other it first off all made sense. They all had been to the blacksite and knew it existed. Secondly the unit itself, while unorthodox got the job done, that he couldn't deny at all. Well... this is going to be interesting. on the upside, he realized, it did mean he'd likely get to work on that Frankenstein contraption they had for a transport again.

The instant Mane walked into the room the first thing that occupied his attention was the aromas entering his nose. The waft of bacon, and ham, and summer sausage immediately made him begin to drool; having been asleep when his dinner was delivered to his debriefing room, making it several hours cold by the time he discovered it in the morning, the big cat hadn't eaten for nearly a day.

Unleashing his predator instincts, the lion savagely attacked the table focusing mainly on the meats... and casually having some fruit because his Mommy told him they were good for him. He grabbed a paper plate and loaded it up to gluttonous proportions, and then stood off to the side to let the others in and have some without fear of losing a hand in his feeding frenzy.

James Howlett wrote:When the Major walks into the room, James stands to attention. "Attention!" He barks out for the others benefit.

The command took Mane by surprise. He straightened up, stood at attention, shot up a crisp salute with his right while balancing his plate of breakfast meats with the other hand. A half-eaten slab of ham dangled from his mouth, hanging on from one of the cat's pointed teeth.

Mane quickly took his seat thereafter and listened to the debriefing reports from all of the others. When Karl's came around he was most pleased to see that the techie didn't rat him out, which Mane knew most likely would have result in his untimely euthanasian via a pack of Kill Hounds.

Then came the report from their newest team member Corporal Jericho. Mane listened intently to every word, munching on his breakfast as though it were popcorn at the movies. It was fascinating to learn of the mission that was running parallel to their own, and how they had the common element of a different faction of the same enemy, the Shadow Warriors.

CS High Command wrote:"...Are there any questions before we move forward?"

A little sheepishly at first, and then committing to the action, Mane raised his hand to ask the only question that came to mind. "Seriously? It rained slugs?"

Egan opened his eyes and stared at the ceiling of his little cell for what seemed like the fiftieth time. Being back in Chi-Town or at least very close had brought back memories that he had long forgotten, or at least had learned to ignore. But being back had done the same to them. Getting up well before his alarm was set to go off, Egan cleaned the place and then himself, though he didn't like the looks of his hollowed out reflection. -Running and gunning in some of the most inhospitable places and I look fine, tired but fine. Get back home where it's 'safe' and I look and feel like absolute shit. Ain't that a bitch.-

The time had finally come and Egan moved into the briefing room with the others. Walking up to the table he pours himself some coffee and grabs a small sandwich to eat and forces it down as his body needed food, but he wasn't hungry even in the slightest bit. When the Doc calls for attention Egan does what he needs to do, just barely, before downing the last of his coffee and tossing the cup into the trash while he sits down to listen to the debrief. A mannequin would have had a more life-like and reasonable expression than the scouts one of a reanimated corpse as the slides began and everyone's reports were gone through. As Egan is chastised by the Major his expression does not change one bit, though a small almost imperceptible nod is given in response. The rest of the time he does not move until the Major informs the group about Ford. Only then does Egan scan the room with his dead eye and a look of sadness flits across his face as the EOD Tech's absence is noted. -Another one down......damn.-
Returning to his previous position, Egan remains silent when the call for questions comes out.

"Thank you sir," Snoopy says with the appropriate level of deference as his assignment is confirmed. He still is a little uncertain about his fit with this group, but it has provided the chance for some of his best flying, and definitely the most challenging opposition. Now, it's dealing with the psychological effects and conflicting moral issues that will be the future challenges. He is ready and willing to face them, his duty as a soldier in the Army of the Coalition requires more than just physical toughness and combat skills. He learned from his father the moral fortitude it takes to uphold one's responsibility to the army and to the state. He is committed in spite of any reservations. And, his secret is probably safer when he's with these misfits than if they talk when he isn't around.

Friendly to most people, Karl is the rare exception, Snoopy heads over to the new guy and offers his hand, "Welcome to this outfit, we're a strange group alright. I'm Snoopy, PA pilot mostly. Everyone here has several roles. Not like the regular army at all. Where are you coming from?"

Rolls

Entering the briefing he quickly scans the others who arrived before him, he's more than a little surprised he isn't the only one attending. Even with the video debriefing he’d assumed there'd be at least an interview (probably a dozen) before he was allowed to see anyone other than his ’escorts’. Spotting the food he waited until it was clear of others before heading up. It's not that he's anti-social, he just isn't sure what the situation is and he's not in a hurry to screw things up.

Grabbing a pair of sandwiches in one hand and an orange juice and coffee precariously balanced in the other he makes his way down to quickly sit and eat. The overwhelming exhaustion he'd felt last night had been pushed back with a deep sleep. He is still dog tired, but he no longer felt like the walking dead. Now he felt the exhaustion replaced with ravenous hunger.

He's done with the sandwiches and orange juice well before the Major walks in, but is still sipping the coffee when the call for attention comes. He snaps to, the coffee left on the small table in front of him. Settling down he watches the debriefings in silence. At the announcement of his transfer he answers with a nod, ”Understood. Thank you sir.” This being the second time he's been the only survivor of his unit he was worried he might not see active duty...or the outside of a cell again.

Then at the call for questions he is about to issue a basic no sir when the mutant cat speaks up. Unsure if he should answer, he looks between the Major and cat for a brief moment before deciding. ”No questions sir.” he then turns to Mane and answers quickly, ”Yeah, slugs for hours. Had to jury rig louvers for the intakes to keep them from clogging up before we could move on.”

Returning the handshake, ”2nd Platoon’s the same way. Least it was, who knows what it will be now. Usually PA or heavy weapons and on mission tech support.” He points to the psi insignia, if there were bigots he usually found it best to flush them out early so he knew. ”I was born with a knack for machines.”

Rolls carried over....

Snoopy is glad this guys at least up front about all the psychic stuff. "Seems like all you psi guys end up in special forces. I honestly never really worked with a psychic until I hooked up with this outfit." He's matter of fact about it, with a little shrug of his shoulders. "I'm from Lone Star," then catching the meaning of the "least it was", Snoopy says, "I was just regular army until we got wiped out, too, and the 110th found me and that dog boy," Snoopy says pointing at Caesar. "He's as eager and reliable as you can ask for. That cat over, it's as crazy as they come. Carried a ape monster head around with him."

He just shrugs at the suggestion that psychics all end up in spec ops. "Just those of us who are good enough, and lucky same as anyone else. Rest of us, if we don't end up in the ISS go to the grinder. I was born in Lone Star, way out of the umbrella of the States though. This mission with the 2nd means it's twice I've been the last guy standing. Damn near three if you count my folks way back." He rubs the back of his scalp and realizing his hair has grown too long while he searches for his next words. "Makes me wonder if I'm lucky or cursed...a bit of both maybe."

"Lucky and cursed just about describes it, that's for sure. It's like learning a whole new army for me here with these guys, a lot of things are just done different." Snoopy shrugs. For another spec ops guy, Jericho is the friendliest by far.

Karl takes some interest at the man mentioning he had a 'way with machines'. "You a pilot or a tech?" he asks. "Could certainly use the hand of another engineer with some of the kit this unit has." he didn't take exception to the point the unit might have wound up with two engineers. It simply meant there was more that they could do together that only one of them couldn't do alone. That and it helped to have redundancy out in the field, even with a small unit like this one. "You should see the monstrosity of a transport we cobbled together out in the field. Needs a serious overhaul if I can get some time in a proper workshop bay with it."

Freeman listens as "tooth pick" goes through the after action reports. While the Lieutenant is interested in the video reports from his teammates he wonders why they would waste everyone's time by doing them separately just to show them to everyone later. It really is an interrogation technique. Interrogating your own people was a great way to engender loyalty. Sighing inwardly Freeman let's it go, the system was perfect but it is the only thing keeping humanity from being swalloed into a rift forever.

John's ears perk up at the news Ford is being transferred, he is a good solider and a hell of a mechanic. While Karl seems competent as well, Ford's personality would be hard to replace among the enlisted people. Much harder to replace thn the fingers and toes the old maniac blew off. His replacement, Corporal Jericho, is a psychic. Freeman tries hard not to hold that against him. Psychics are valuable collaborators in the effort, but they could also read your mind. Something that riles up an intelligence officer by its very nature.

If Freeman holds any malice it doesn't show on his face as the easy going Lieutenant welcomes his new teammate, "Welcome to the hundred and tenth. I'll let Mister Grey teach you the ropes, but from an officer's perspective we work hard, fight, hard and play hard. Always know what time it is and you'll do alright."

Tired and hungry, Caesar went through the automatic motions of military life. Standing at attention when an officer entered. Having coffee until he noticed there were new faces in the room. Snoopy pointed at him, but Caesar missed what he said and gave a thumbs up to his pal. Something about raining slugs? No, that couldn't be right.

CS High Command wrote:"Are there any questions before we move forward?"

Already on his second bacon and egg sandwich, Caesar suddenly noticed the Major was expecting some sort of reply from them. Knowing his rank, he kept his mouth shut. He put on is best "paying attention" face and tuned in while finishing off his sandwich.

Morning Debrief
    Date: June 10, 109
    Time: 0600
    Temp: 70 degrees
Weather: Outside the city it is raining
Ley Line info: There are multiple ley lines in the ruins of Old Chicago 80 miles away, but none in Chi-Town itself.
Location: Level 1 of the Chi-Town Joseph Prosek Memorial Military Fortress, Briefing Room

"Your missions have all revolved around one particular scumbag, and your last mission only confirmed it. We thought that Lord Valorgo was attempting to build some device that will destroy the ability of the Coalition to produce food for the foreseeable future. Analysis of the information you brought us, plus the information gathered by Second and Fourth Platoons, however has led us to the inescapable conclusion that we could not be more wrong and yet dead on. Their intent is to bring a monstrous and alien creature of vast intelligence and malevolence in order to destroy the CS by destroying our food and our people. Pestilence is their weapon, and it is not something we can easily beat, though we are pursuing fallback plans with that in mind. We have no idea why they think such a creature would stop with the Coalition only, but these malcontents are deluded and that is not our concern. Your job is to stop them. Interrogations and further investigation has revealed that there are several other items up for grabs. What we do know there are multiple items up for grabs, but we have yet to determine what they are. Because of the sensitive nature of the threat and our need to deal with it quickly and efficiently, your transport options will be upgraded, and there will be considerable robotic support from here on. You will have a menu of options to choose from later today and tomorrow. We won't go into those specifics here. For now, your officers will need to go over your budget items and each of you may be needed to fill in detailed reports as requested, as well as follow up debriefs. Lunch will be served at 1200 here. You will be free from 1400 to 1530. At 1530, you are to report to Room 01-923-B for a protocol briefing for the awards ceremony. You will be released from there to get ready for the ceremony. You will be given the rest of your time table there. Questions or comments?"

Once all are answered, he nods. "Lieutenants, you have an office in the next room to complete all of your paperwork for gear. A detailed inventory has been taken and you will help us with dispensation of those items to their next homes. If you need them, ask for them, but if you do not, don't. A list of standard issue gear will be assigned for each soldier. You can modify it based on squad preference and performance. Use your men however you need to to complete this task. I need the initial report ready by noon, and I will meet with you after lunch to discuss any issues." He looks to the others. "There is a lounge next door with media stations for each of you. A set of vending machines is also there, as well as a coffee machine. Down the hall there is a small gym you are welcome to use. Aside from those places and the head, please don't leave these premises. Your officers may have questions for you. Your media blackout has ended, so you may catch up if you're so inclined. You mutants might be interested in the Tales from the Creche-Babies reality show. It shows some pups undergoing basic training. It's getting good reviews among a lot of folks, especially medical types, trainers, psi-hounds and psi-stalkers. Pretty sure the entire first season up to now is available on demand."

"If there's nothing else, let's get to it. See you at lunch, gentlemen."

James nods at the Major's comments and when dismissed heads directly to the office that they have set aside for Freeman and himself. Once in the office, James sits down and closes his eyes in thought. Armored fight suits, Vibro-knives, CS-2 Survival packs.... but what else? James thinks as he opens his eyes and looks around the office. James idley turns on the TV and switches it to the news, before turning on the computer before him. As the screen warms and the system boots up, James looks at the TV and see's if anything interesting is on the news.

Once the computer is up and running James opens directories to the equipment available to his team, which is extensive. James' bionic fingers click on the keyboard and begins building a database for the first platoon of the 110th. James also goes through the pile of gear that has been audited from their stores. I'll request that we get the APC back, it's a monstrosity... but it's our monstrosity.

If/when Freeman arrives, James looks up from what he's doing. "So what do you think? It has been a long while since I've been in Chi-Town." James chuckles. "So we have to reassign all this gear, oh so much fun.

After Mane was dismissed from the meeting the first thing he did was make his way to the gym area. Been a long time since he had a proper old-fashioned Pumping Iron workout.

Once there in the weight room, he changed his attire to something more suitable, then went to the area where mutants were allowed. The big cat went directly to the free-weight bench press, examined the bar, and dismissed it as it being too flimsy. He then searched around until Mane found another one that was rated for inhuman loads. Satisfied with what the mountain-of-a-mutant could find, he then went about loading it up. Plate after plate went on the ends; everyone 45 lbs., because why waste his time with anything less. Once fully loaded, he slipped on the safety cuffs to the ends.

Starting at 495 lbs (including thr bar weight), Mane proceeded to rip off 30 repetitions in a hurry as a warm-up. He then added 90 kg more and launched it 20 times more. The hulking battle cat continued to pyramid up the weight and lowering the reps till he reached near his maximum heft an even short-ton.

Satisfied with his chest, Mane moved on to the free-weight squats where he could get his whole body into the exercise. As before he started at a relatively light 1,000 lbs. Following the ritual, he slowly added more weight untill he reached his peek at two short-tons. Those last few reps hurt and strained, and the lion let out a muted roar with the exertion.

Realizing he was getting too loud, Mane switched over to lighter core exercises, away from the glory-muscles. As he worked the iron, he began to think about what gear he was going to request. What worked, what didn't, what could stand some improvement. After working out for another hour, Mane showered off, got back in his uniform (again, sans shoes or socks), and went to speak to Howlett.

He knocked on his chamber door and entered only after being given permission. "Sir? I think I know what I would like to request in terms of gear for the upcoming mission..." (OOC: To be disclosed in PM to Howlett and Hangout IM to our tireless GM; oh, kind and benevolent and generous and handsome as he is.)

After he was done and dismissed, Mane returned to his quarters and turned on the TV to see if this Tales from the Creche-Babies show waa as good as the hype.

Karl did have one question and decided to ask now rather than later. "I have a question sir." He says clearly. "If we are allowed to retain the modified transport we came back with, I would like to request time in a proper vehicle repair bay with it to bring everything up to par and iron out any issues we may have missed refitting it in the field. Who would I speak to about trying to obtain permission for that provided we are allowed to retain it?" Not that I don't have my own connections, but best not to step on people's toes or bypass the CoC if I don't have to. Beyond that Karl happily returned to speaking with others, chowing down, catching up on the latest news and... most importantly, now that he was allowed to use the regular lines of communication, touch base with what ever office handled personal communications so he could get letters of condolences and other related things sent off to the appropriate people.

After making sure that the information he gathered from the pre-rifts facility did indeed reach the right people. It wasn't that he didn't trust in his superiors. But he didn't trust in them kind of thing. At least certain ones. He knew the importance of that information getting to the right places in the CS and he was going to do his damnest to make sure it wasn't simply buried and forgotten. It was simply too important. Not that it becoming super highly classified was out of the question. If anything it was likely to be. But still, so long as someone important was doing something useful with the data he would be happy.

"Chi-Town is exactly like I remember it. More brass than brains. Procedures, rules, everything by the book. Not out of respect but so you can play "gotcha" with that other officer you're competing with for the same spot. In a lot of ways its the same kind of jungle outside the walls. Get ahead by stepping on the guy behind and in front of you." Shrugging the Lieutenant mindlessly flips through some requisition forms, "I prefer it out there. At least they're honest about it."

Setting into the work, Freeman helps Howlett get everything squared away. As long as they were locked down here they couldn't get to the more pressing business of meeting up with the new contacts out in the 'Burbs, If they made it here, then they'll be excellent assets.

This close to Chi-Town and an Into the Flames sightseeing tour and he's only got an hour and a half! That's probably not even enough time to get out of this base. Snoopy is a little distraught by that fact, but he gets suitably lost binge watching stuff in the media room and all but emptying the vending machines. He's chatty about the tv shows and general news type stuff he's watching, but as the day wears on, it does get a little boring. He has had some eye opening experiences of the last few weeks. There's are things about the shows, especially the reality shows, that feel a little more hollow, less reality. But the fiction shows still keep his interest, he is able to accept the absurdity in a show that's not claiming to be "real life".

Still, he things, This close and I don't even get into Chi-Town!

To no one in particular in the media room Snoopy asks, "So do you think we'll actually get to go into the city, or just stuck on this base?"

When Egan heard his name said once more, his head turned in a slow ratcheting fashion towards the LT and the apparent new guy before returning to the Major for the next bit of paperwork to be done. -Fuck they like their paperwork. It's some absolute bullshit is what it is...- With the okay to be dismissed to travel around a now slightly larger cell, Egan makes his way to the fitness center and strips down into some workout clothes. He catches the sight of Mane working the iron, as he himself tapes up and starts in on the heavy bag in the corner. What begins as lethargic and half-hearted slowly begins to pick up steam till towards the end it seems like he is downright trying to murder the bag. Punches, kicks, knees and elbows hit the bag in a vengeful fury as Egan beats the ghosts back down into submission. Twice in the last 36 minutes of Egan's 50 minute bag session, sensitives are treated to a spike in ISP usage while Egan seems to become just a little bit faster and more graceful in his movements. (-20 ISP, Enhanced Reflexes) Ending a little unsteady on his feet, sweat courses down Egan as his lungs work furiously to move fresh air into his body while a small trickle of blood drips down from a gash in his elbow. He takes a few moments to collect himself before wiping down the blood splattered bag and hitting the shower to clean himself up.

Once all cleaned back up, and in his uniform again, Egan heads to the media room and flops down in a chair not knowing what else to really do.

"Yeah, will get out of here eventually. When that is I have no idea, they really love their paperwork here so it could be awhile. But we'll get out." Egan speaks in a tired voice, but overall he looks a lot better than the walking dead he was earlier.

As Mane sat there in his temporary quarters, watching the first episode of Tales from the Creche-Babies, the big cat could literally feel his IQ dropping. This genera of so-called "reality" TV was interesting at first, but the hoaky setups and terrible improvised lines made him wince time and time again.

By the end, the show's narrator began to say, "Tune in next time for..." The man's voice was suddenly cut off when Mane pushed the power button on the remote control. "No."

Unhappy with the flavor the show's pilot episode left in his mouth, the murder-cat opted for a change of venue. Maybe he wasn't happy with the show due to his confined surroundings, maybe it just sucked. Either way, he needed to get out and move around.

After meandering the facility for a few minutes, he found himself in the media room. There he saw Egan and Snoopy.

"Out?" He said with hint of excitement, the prospect presenting a ray of unexpected hope for him. "I've never been to Chi-Town... other that here and now... If you guys are going, just think of me as your shadow!"

Not wanting to overwhelm the other two with his mass, Mane ploped down on a different couch. In protest, the springs in the couch strained and groaned, but didn't break. "By the way, Egan, I couldn't help notice the blood you left on that heavy bag in the gym. Smells good, man. Smells like a proper warrior should." he added with an approving nod.

Mane then turned his attention to the entertainment system. "So, what's on TV?"

Karl 'ohs' a moment "And don't forget, we get a leave pass into town I'm buying the first round of drinks for everyone." he points out, glancing even to the new guy adding "You too, since it sounds like you went through worse hell than I did. These boys pulled me out of a seriously bad situation, so I kinda owe em." And it wouldn't do to estrange the new guy just because he wasn't there. Besides, might give me a chance to pick his brain a bit for some ideas.

((Rolls Carried Over))

Egan gets up from his seat and moves to the beverage machine. Looking at the options, he hits a button and picks up the drink that gets dispensed and opens it.
Mane wrote:"Out?" He said with hint of excitement, the prospect presenting a ray of unexpected hope for him. "I've never been to Chi-Town... other that here and now... If you guys are going, just think of me as your shadow!"

Not wanting to overwhelm the other two with his mass, Mane plopped down on a different couch. In protest, the springs in the couch strained and groaned, but didn't break. "By the way, Egan, I couldn't help notice the blood you left on that heavy bag in the gym. Smells good, man. Smells like a proper warrior should." he added with an approving nod.
Taking a sip of his orange spike, Egan salutes the big cat with the bottle and swallows before speaking, "It felt good." he said with sincerity before taking another quick sip. "We got that award thing and then we should get our pass into and hopefully out of town."
Karl wrote:Karl 'ohs' a moment "And don't forget, we get a leave pass into town I'm buying the first round of drinks for everyone."
Egan points over at Karl with the bottle, a smile finally crossing his face. "Amen to that! We'll need to find a good bar out in the burbs and have some fun."
Mane wrote:Mane then turned his attention to the entertainment system. "So, what's on TV?"
Shrugging he replies "No idea." before he looks over at the screen then Snoopy. "So what are we watching?" Egan waits for the flyboys' reply before turning to the new guy. -Time for a little fun.- With a serious, but welcoming expression Egan addresses the new Tech. "Welcome to the hundred and tenth, good to have you aboard. I know the LT wanted me to show you the ropes, but I really don't understand why...I mean they confiscated all our equipment so I can't at the moment, but I'm sure you've seen them before." Egan keeps a straight face as he moves to sit back down in the chair he vacated earlier.

After being dismissed, Caesar hit the gym and started racking up some squats for the first time in ages. He got a good leg-day in despite the Battle Cat roaring up a storm and seemingly using up all of the plates for himself.

Mane wrote:By the end, the show's narrator began to say, "Tune in next time for..." The man's voice was suddenly cut off when Mane pushed the power button on the remote control. "No."

"Hey, I'm watching that!" Caesar reached out and turned the show back on. He'd never seen a TV show that was such a perfect slice of life of his test-tube childhood. The growing pains, the search for love and acceptance, and then, finally, the glory in serving the Skull. Caesar found himself stifling tears a few times.

That train of thought quickly went out the window once Egan and Mane started talking about hitting the 'Burbs for a drink, a please he hadn't been to since his Dock Pack used to patrol it when he was fresh out of Basic. "You guys hitting the 'Burbs?" He thought about a few dives he remembered that allowed humans, but the one constant in the 'Burbs was change. If even 5% of the places he remembered hadn't burned down, been crushed by a supernatural giant, gone out of business, snuffed out by the Black Market or got raided by the Coalition, he'd have been very surprised.

Rehearsal
    Date: June 10, 109 PA
    Time: 1530
    Temp: 76 degrees
Weather: Outside the city it is raining
Ley Line info: There are multiple ley lines in the ruins of Old Chicago 80 miles away, but none in Chi-Town itself.
Location: Level 1 of the Chi-Town Joseph Prosek Memorial Military Fortress, Briefing Room
A Lt. Fields, a protocol officer will meet with the 110th at 1530.
"Alright, first a heads up. You are not going to some small private awards ceremony. There are going to be some brass in that room. If you are asked a question, answer it graciously, succinctly, and with as little flourish as possible. Most of you are going to be so out of your element it won't matter, but you need to be aware. You mutants will also be getting recognized. Do not speak unless spoken to. If anyone cares about your opinions, you will be informed. Do not talk to the officers at all, except to answer them. Are there any questions?" She answers them and then moves on. "Alright, I have a mock up of the stage up here and I will walk you through the motions." The next thirty minutes are spent going over everyone's specific parts. They are given several possible scenarios including receiving a medal or commendation, receiving a promotion, shaking the hands of a dignitary, and then gracefully and quickly moving off stage, but not too quickly. She stresses that all of these are covered with every individual, but are not indicative of anything. But each must prove they can faithfully go through the motions. Once each does, they are dismissed to go get prepared and be at the dining hall by 1845 hours.

Image
They are led to a series of rooms with two shared heads and an attached rec room. In their individual quarters they will find all of their personal effects from Merctown are in boxes in their rooms. This includes any medals and ribbons they will need for their uniforms. A fresh set of dress uniforms is pressed and on a hanger in the closet, wrapped in a bag with the soldier's name on it. Similarly new shoes, shined to perfection await in each soldier's closet as well.

In preparation for the award ceremony Mane examined the tidy new uniform they had laid out for him. It was clean, it was beautiful, it was prestine... It had shoes in his size. "Awwwww!" he protested it nobody in particular. The big cat had gotten quite used to walking around with no shoes on his feet, as free as the wild, as they were meant to be.

During the rehearsals he paid particular attention to where he was supposed to be, what he was supposed to do, which hands he was supposed to shake, which persons he was definitely not allowed to talk to.

When he came to stand with Ceasar in the mutant-designated area, Mane turned to his hunting companion and mouthed the words, "This blows.", careful not to let any of the higher ranking personnel see him.

The rehearsal
James follows instructions that Lt. Fields gives, being more of a refresher course for him than anything else. James makes sure the others get the program down, not wanting them to embarrass themselves in front of the Brass later. This is going to be annoying. James thinks several times throughout the rehearsal, but keeps his opinions to himself. Once Lt. Fields dismisses the 110th James sighs contentedly. At least I will have an hour or two to relax, before the ceremony.

The Barrracks
James isn't surprised when they are led to yet another barracks. Soon we will be stationed somewhere more permanent. I hope. James thinks as he walks the suite checking all the details briefly. "Start taking showers, ten to fifteen minutes each boys. I want you dressed to the nines before eighteen hundred hours. Lieutenant Freeman I will be in my bunk for a few minutes, please make sure this lot washes behind its ears." James says before smartly making his way to his assigned room. Not much different then all the other barracks I have been assigned. James thinks as he looks at the boxes on the bed. James peers into the box. Figures we have been reassigned. James says as he pulls out the case holding his ribbons and badges.

James strips out of the uniform they gave him, leaving him in a pair of boxers and a sleeveless undershirt. James sits on the edge of his bed and looks through the surprisingly full box. I wonder if they packed my plant. James thinks as he rummages through the boxes for a pair of items. A crystal decanter and a matching glass. James is happy to see the gift survived it's expedited trip to their current location. James happily pours himself a slightly fuller than usual glas and sets the decanter on the desk. James stares at the glass for several long moments before he sets it too down next to the decanter. "I have come a long way from home." James says quietly to himself as he works his shoes off. This is quickly followed by the rest of his duty uniform, leaving him in his small clothes. James picks up the glass again and takes a long sip. "Say what you will of the backwoods yokels, they sure have the art of whiskey making down pact." James says, again quietly to himself before finishing the glass.

James gets up from his bed and heads out into the barracks proper. James makes his way to the kitchenette and rummages through the cabinets for a few moments before victoriously pulling out a package of coffee. James proceeds to set the coffee maker to brew a full pot, before beginning to pace around in his boxers and a sleeveless undershirt. To observers James has a look of irritation on his face, and those close enough to him can hear him mumbling about mazes and Minotaurs. Once the coffee maker is finished filling with it's black goodness, James finds a coffee cup and fills it. Seemingly now content with life James heads over to the couches and sips from the steaming cup of coffee. Maybe I'm going crazy. James thinks to himself.

Coffee finished James takes his turn in the shower, not a long shower mind you, just enough to get all the parts clean before heading into his room to get dressed. It's in getting dressed that James takes his time carefully putting on each piece of apparel, making sure it lines up perfectly. Applying the various badges and medals he has been awarded in his long career with the Coalition States. Some of the badges are for proficiency, others were for serving on various fronts, Two were for wounds sustained in the service to the Coalition, and two were for actions that people write stories about. James was careful with each one, treating them as if they were fragile. If any one was watching him they would have likely though him to be reminiscing about their meanings, and they wouldn't have been wrong. Once the final pin was placed James grabed his gloves and tucked them into his belt and grabbed his hat before making his way out into the common areas again. James examined each soldier in his squad and made sure that their uniforms were also perfect.

Taking the path of least resistance, Freeman says very little at the rehersal. While not quite passive aggressive he does chafe against the high level of procedure and protocol. Knowing it will go faster if everyone shuts up he makes sure to glare at anyone who asks stupid questions or who can't get it right.

Finally at their new quarters he gives Howlett a mock salute at the order to get the group to groom properly.

When it is time to get ready he toys with the idea of pranking the whole event by showing up in a cyber disguise. Instead he just adjusts his hair impacts to a perfect crew cut. Smirking at his instant barbering job the Lieutenant heads to the designated meeting area.

Karl, like some of the others at least, didn't care for all the formalities. But you just had to kind of go along with these things in the military and didn't get to just not show up, which was what he really would have preferred over all this political pomp. With James giving a few orders that Karl honestly expected to come about he just nodded offered up a "Yes Sir!" and went to go get ready. First thing to tackle of course was getting his hair cut back to military standard, shaving, showering, and all the other little odds and ends one did to make sure they were presentable for a bunch of higher ups and political types. At least this is only for a night. I'd shoot myself if I had to do this shit every day.

Egan listens to the instructions about what to do, what not to do, when and how to do it. All the while chaffing under the coming scrutiny that he abhors. Having finished the walkthrough, Egan gets himself a trim for his wild hair that had grown out while on assignment and makes his way back to the showers to clean up. Looking at his scruffy reflection in the mirror Egan sighs softly as his scratches at the beard that had grown amidst the bumps, bruises, and scars that now adorn his face. -Damn, I've seen better days.- Shaving then taking another shower, Egan gets himself ready for the bullshit to come. As the time comes to meet up for the parade into the room, Egan exits his bunk in his fresh dress uniform and gathers with the rest of the unit. "Lets get this crap over with. I seriously need a beer or three..."

REHEARSAL
Snoopy likes to tell himself, everyone who flies fast likes a little spotlight now and then. He's not an attention hound or too much of a show off, but he does have an inflated opinion of his skills and overall worth. He tries to play it cool, really, he does. Anyone with eyes probably can tell the idea of getting recognized by a bunch of big O officers is pretty exciting for Snoopy. More than some of the others, for sure, maybe more than all of them, Snoopy has a great time with rehearsal. Not that he's goofing off, or over-acting, he's just genuinely enjoying the whole thing.

Of course, this is all brand new to him, so that shiny feeling is part of it too. No matter what the lady says, he's going to 100% feel like whoever big brass man talking at him is actually talking to him. Because, as far as a medal ceremony, this is something he never really ever imagined. So many of the realities of life in the CS military are turning out different than his notions only a few short months ago. Don't salute the "sirs" in the field, how'd I miss that? Sheesh! Now look at me!

He does fantasize a bit about the episode of Into the Flames when the awards ceremony was attacked... But only in terms of "how cool would that be!"

BARRACKS
One thing that takes the shine of a special event: waiting for it to start.

Snoopy makes every attempt he can to get to the showers first. It's the first and only real critical path item before the ceremony.

He putters. He checks each button for lint about 13 1/2 times. Zippers? All working fine? Those weird extra buttons on the inside of dress pants? Yup those are fully functional and properly buttoned. (What are those for anyway? Just makes hit harder to take a leak.) He spends some time making sure his short hair is perfectly combed - by using his shoes as a mirror, he's being efficient. He goes out, pours some coffee. Stands around, but quickly zips back to his bunk when scowling Lt Howlett shows up.

The scowl was only part of it. Up until that point, Snoopy had no idea just how much was bionic on the boss man. Holy crap. Hopefully his exit was too obvious.

He sets the coffee on the desk and focuses on trying to find just the perfect adjustment for his belt. That takes quite a lot of time. So his coffee is cold. So he goes back out to the kitchenette to nuke it (he prefers 1:30, that gets cold coffee just at the edge of undrinkably hot). Since Howlett is still there Snoopy sucks it up (he's already halfway holding his breath, his current belt test is on the tight side, probably too tight).

"Sir, uh, hi. Since we, me and Caesar that is, just got attached in the field, I don't know any of this unit's history. Any highlights or maybe traditions you guys have? Maybe we're not "in" yet, I get that, if there's nothing to tell yet. I like to get to know what's going on, the outfits story. If you don't mind, sir."

He doesn't ask until his coffee is hot, and he doesn't sit down, but he tries to affect a relaxed but respectful stance.

After being dismissed from the rehearsal, Mane heard Howlett's command to get good and properly showered before the real deal begins in a short few hours. Delighted with the excuse to remove the fancy dress uniform and its offensive perfect-fitting shoes, the big cat wasted no time removing the gawdy garb. Even so, he was careful not to damage or dirty it in any way. The top brass would probably have him sized up for a lion-skin rug if he did!

Taking a page from Howlett, Mane disrobed down to his boxers and began to prowl the hallways of the team's barracks with not a stitch more on to cover his furry body. However, unlike the others, the hulking cat didn't rush to be first or early to the showers. In fact he decided to be courteous to the rest and go dead last. With all his nearly-white fur and fluffy mane, the potential for leaving a fair amount behind in the drain was a sure thing. No one wanted to deal with that!

While he waited for his turn, Mane partook of some of the coffee that was already made by the boss. Finding the largest cup he could find, he filled it with three-quarters full, and then topped it off with creamer and single sugar. He slowly took a savoring sip and closed his eyes. "Mmm-mmm! You make a mean pot of Joe, Boss." His long tail slowly waved from side to side as he took another sip, reflecting the immense pleasure he took in the heavily creamed caffeinated nectar.

Once all the others were good and done with the shower, Mane stepped in, hung his boxers on a coat hook on the wall, and began to thoroughly clean himself. While not an unsanitary person, out on the job he could only do so much. Taking the time to get every nook and cranny, shampoo his fur and mane from head to toe, and make sure take a brush to under his claws, it was no small task! After twenty minutes of work, the murderous feline mutant stepped out and began the arduous task of drying and fluffing all that hair and fur. With a mix of head & body shaking, towel drying, blow drying, and brushing things out, it took him an hour to make himself presentable to the cat's highest standard.

When he emerged, once more in his (now recycled) boxers and nothing more, Mane's coat outright glowed and glistened. His mane was wild yet uniformly fluffy. And as he walked, he was actively using a nail buffer to get the claws on his fingers to a perfect obsidian polish, matching the work he did on his toes earlier. "These are going to look super sweet shredding through the the next punk ass bitch I get to kill..." Mane then stopped and looked around when he realized he wasn't in private when he said that. He quickly looked at the first person he saw and added, "... in the line of duty... of course."

Noting the time was drawing near, Mane returned to his bunk and began to adorn himself again in the posh dress uniform they provided him. He saved putting on the shoes for last, as he was becoming quite fond of running around barefoot.

In his quarters, Caesar meticulously brushed his fur. First with the basic brush for the surface shedding, then with the brush for his undercoat and then once more with the first brush for anything knocked loose during the second go around. He put on the dress uniform and struggled with the top button, he hated that part. After that, he carefully went over his uniform with a lint roller. He'd seen more than one Dog Boy sent to the Minnesota front for getting hair on an officers uniform and with his white coat, he was especially vulnerable.

He joined the others.

Mane wrote:When he came to stand with Ceasar in the mutant-designated area, Mane turned to his hunting companion and mouthed the words, "This blows.", careful not to let any of the higher ranking personnel see him.

"A lot of mutants don't make it to this part of the job, stretch." Caesar whispered, curtly.

James sips his coffee thoughtfully. "A strange question really, I have not considered the teams past, or its traditions." James says almost distantly. James motions for Snoopy to join him in the seating area, picking one of the couches to sit down on for himself. "I have not been with the One tenth as long as it might seem. We have always seemed to be a magnet for ruined teams. I was one such person actually. When I met the One Tenth I was on a mission with the the Thirty First, also known as the Marauders. We were on a long range patrol in Arkansas, when our unit was wiped out for the most part by black winged monster men... That is an apt but awful name for the species. A scout named Bonaduce, a Combat Cyborg named Taylor, and myself were the only survivors. It almost seems simpler now that I have time to think about it. Anyways we ended getting tasked into looking into a Coalition supporting town and ended up stopping a plot by Lord Vilargo. After that seems a whirlwind really, we likely are unofficially the only Coalition ops team to infiltrate Atlantis, complete our objective, and return home in one piece... relatively speaking. And to be honest you showed up for the real good part of this last mission." James pauses to drink some of his coffee.

"As for Traditions. I do not think we have any, save for maybe the little prank war I put an end to by out pranking Corporal Genet." James says with a wry kind of smile that may be endearing on normal faces, but almost sinister on his face. "But now that you have brought this question to me, I may look into the deeper history of the One Tenth."

Mane wrote:"Mmm-mmm! You make a mean pot of Joe, Boss." His long tail slowly waved from side to side as he took another sip, reflecting the immense pleasure he took in the heavily creamed caffeinated nectar.

James chuckles. "First thing you learn to do in medical school. Would not have survived without a good cup of coffee otherwise."

Rehearsal
Lyndon goes through the motions with relative ease, unphased by his expected inclusion with the mutants. He’s earned a couple of medals in the past...surviving against the odds kind of did that, but such formal affairs were far from common. He has however long since mastered the mask of respect and devotion required at any event with top brass.

Barracks
Unpacking the contents of his life didn’t take long. He was orphaned from outside the reach of the CS, any life he had before joining the service has no place in his barracks, and while he’s served for a while he hasn’t made any close relationships (more specifically none that are still alive). His uniforms and paraphernalia are all hung up neatly. His hair is always kept short, a good general rule for anyone who may need to fight, but his five o’clock shadow will definitely need tending before the actual event. He is in no rush to do so though, knowing that the closer he can manage it to show time the greater the likelihood of him looking clean.

He sends a copy of his usual requisition sheet from 2nd Platoon to the Lt.’s for them to look over. Wondering if they’ll end up being more or less accommodating.

He wanders into the rec room and helps himself to a cup of black coffee. A couple of cold beers or stiff drinks would hit the spot much better, but he bides his time with the ritual of a good coffee. He nods to his new comrades, but doesn’t approach or engage any of them, choosing to sit at an empty table and enjoy his drink. He’s careful not to look antisocial and scare anyone off, but he’s more interested in continuing to defrag from the loss of his team just a few days ago.

Snoopy listens carefully to the LT as he rattles of the somewhat tragic history of the 110th. Snoopy feels like his own story fits right in. At least he came in with a squad mate of sorts, even if just a dog boy. The prank tradition is kind of funny, he suspects pranks from Howlett might be fairly wicked.

He says outloud, "Sir, I imagine a prank contest between you and Ford could get pretty dangerous."

Awards Ceremony
    Date: June 10, 109 PA
    Time: 1645
    Temp: 70 degrees
Weather: Outside the city it is raining
Ley Line info: There are multiple ley lines in the ruins of Old Chicago 80 miles away, but none in Chi-Town itself.
Location: Level 1 of the Chi-Town Joseph Prosek Memorial Military Fortress, Awards Banquet Room 15.

The room itself is a vast banquet room with at least twenty tables. It has a stage up at the front with the CS Coat of Arms and the National and Chi-town flags in the background. Looking about you can see multiple cameras of the video sort pointed at the stage. Unlit lights fill the ceiling above the stage, which will obviously light it well. The room itself is tall, easily 20 feet up. In a wall overlooking the stage, a mirrored wall of glass sits impassive. A single balcony just from just beside the wall of glass which is covered in what looks to be transparent armored glass covering a door. Near the stage you see Major Smith, General Floyd, Lt. Colonel Carol Black, and Colonel Lyboc all sitting in places of honor. A bevy of other officers are around them. The presence of such luminaries immediately puts the more cautious in the group on edge. There is no reason for anyone aside from the General to be here, and only because it was his own troops. And he could have video-conferenced into the ceremony and none would consider it a slight. Spread out among the room are men and women in uniforms, tuxedos, and night gowns, with obvious holes where some of the luminaries might sit. But this close to the ceremony, none are in their normal seats. An attendant shows each soldier where they will be sitting after the ceremony and picture taking session. The places for each person at every table are set with crystal glasses and plates with the CS emblem etched into them, silver trimmed flatware with the CS skull emblem etched in the handle, atop perfectly pressed white linen table clothes and comfortable chairs with armrests.

Freeman and Howlett are seated a table with other officers and their spouses, plus an older woman by the name of Major Sandra Taylor, who looks barely holding in her grief. Looking at the name tags on the table, they seem to be the only ones there under the rank of Major. They are sitting next to each other, however. Karl, Egan, and Snoopy are all sitting at a table with a mix of low ranking officers and NCOs. Judging by the name tags, no one under the rank of sergeant is present aside from them. Mane and Caesar are led to a table not too far from the enlisted men, and their table includes four officers, two with medical titles, and four enlisted men and women. None seemed to have spouses with them. Their table also seems to be the least full. Still, they have the same kinds of comfortable chairs, their plates are the same, and the cups they have are made for psi-hounds. The idea is you pour the drink into your mouth using the funnel like spout on the edge. Aside from the protrusion, it looks just like those everyone else uses. Attendants show each of them out it works. No licking out of the bowl tonight. It's time to pour it straight down the gullet.

After everyone is shown to their table, they are asked to assemble up at the front. General Ford steps up to the podium. He reads from the papers before him.
"By order of the Emperor, The Coalition States Army and the Department of Special Divisions, hereby award the 110th Special Tactics and Reconnaissance Company the Meritorious Unit Commendation for their actions in unaligned territories to bring about the capture of valuable intelligence, strategic assets, the confiscation of dangerous items, the elimination of hostile belligerents, and the rescue of Prisoners of War behind enemy lines. For these actions, the unit is awarded this Commendation and is given the thanks of a grateful nation." Murmurs of approval wash over the crowd as restrained light applause erupts in reaction. It ends within moments, allowing Floyd to continue.

"First, we must honor the sacrifice of the soldiers of the 110th Special Tactics and Reconnaissance Company, Second Platoon." He reads through the entire roster of the Second Platoon, with multiple posthumous awards given out, including the CS Cross for Bravery to its commanding officer. Polite and somber applause is given out. The last award is given to an older woman in dress uniform with a Major's rank, and General Floyd talks to her as he is obviously expressing his condolences and the thanks of a grateful nation. Jericho can see her last name is the same as his former CO's. As he finishes, Jericho steps up to the edge of the platform as instructed. General Floyd looks to him and reads on.
"Lyndon Boyd Jericho, Private, 110th Special Tactics and Reconnaissance Company, Second Platoon. By special recommendation from Colonel Joseph Prosek II, Heir of the Emperor, this unit's officers and the command staff, Private Jericho, for bravery in combat, dedication to duty and his fellow soldiers, and exemplary service, is hereby awarded a special commendation for bravery, the Distinguished Service Medallion for exceptionally distinguished performance of duty contributing to national security, and is hereby given special dispensation by High Command to be promoted to the rank Corporal. He is to faithfully execute the duties of commiserate to, and enjoy the privileges as demanded by, that rank. A grateful nation thanks you Corporal." He pins on the new rank insignia, and then shakes Lyndon's hand and hands him the medal in the box as a plaque with the letter from the Emperor's Son. A note inside says, 'This one's on me. General Floyd.', and a picture is taken as it happens. There is a murmur of surprise at the mention of the Emperor's son signing a letter of recommendation for him, the medal gleaming in his hand, and a two grade jump in rank. Slightly exuberant, but polite applause follows.

"And now, we honor the service of the 110th Special Tactics and Reconnaissance Company, First Platoon." Mane is up first. You are a credit to your breed and the scientific teams behind your sire and dam's design. A grateful nation thanks you Private." he shakes Mane's massive hand with a smile, and a picture is taken a it happens. For Mane, this is the first time they've even acknowledged who his mother and father were, let alone acknowledged them in public. Even if 99% of the people assembled didn't know what that meant, Mane did!

Further, for injuries sustained while captured by the enemy, and perseverance under duress, you are hereby awarded this Purple Heart. Light polite and subdued applause follows.

Egan was annoyed by the whole pomp and uselessness of what he considered the coming circle jerk of a ceremony as he stepped into the room, but as he took in the faces on the stage he missed a step. Seeing the General here instead of MercTown, and recognizing one of the other two major faces with him caused Egan's mind to spool up and switch over to a war footing. -This room is like walking around downtown Atlantis, much as like there, a wrong step could be your last.- He covered the missed step with a slight pause before continuing into the room, his natural stride easily closing the distance that had opened up without the appearance of rushing. As they moved through the room, he scanned the area, mapping the location of the various tables, paths to and from the stage, and began overlaying the previous run through over everything as they arrived at the assigned table. Egan paused behind the seat he was supposed to sit at, his hand resting on the back of the chair, as he nodded to those already at the table in greeting before being pulled away and lined up to the side of the stage as the ceremony begun.

Egan listens in solemn silence as General Floyd goes over the names of those lost in the second platoon. His mind wanders to those in his own unit that were lost either to the slaver ambush, or the Sploogies hospitality before his own rescue by the 110th. -Seems like it was so long ago, almost another life...- As his own unit begins getting called up one by one, Egan is again pulled down into a memory after seeming to become aware of his cybernetic eye for the first time as Karl is receiving his awards. Flashes of the mayhem from the Bazzar playback in his head, along with waking up in the compounds medbay. -Maybe I should get this one replaced with a Bio-system....though it is nice to have access to thermal and night vision without other gear. It was at least nice to kick those Shadow Warriors in the balls a couple times in repayment.- A grim smile slowly spread across Egan's face at the thought, but was quickly wiped away as his own name was called.

Walking over to General Floyd, Egan's mouth tightened at the corners when his new rank was mentioned and pined on him. Egan took everything in stride, accepted the plaque and box with the reverence that it was due and shook the General's outstretched hand with a smile as the photo was taken. Moving off stage to the next holding area, Egan listens to the last two members get called up and go through the same, nodding once as the Doc becomes a Captain. As they return to their assigned seats, Egan picks the fish choice and makes every effort to enjoy the meal that has been prepared for them. Noticing the spices and textures from the meal, Egan finds himself trying to figure out what was used and how they might have prepared the food as well as how he might have changed or improved upon it. Taking his glass, he holds it up to the squad mates sharing his table and toast them. "Congratulations guys, you earned it."

James looks around the room as they are ushered in. James makes notes of the who's who in attendance. General Floyd, Lieutenant Colonel Black, Colonel Lyboc, Major Smith, and a metric ton of other officers... This is going to be a night for sure James suddenly feels a little self conscious and hopes his uniform is up to snuff. When the attendant shows James will he'll be sitting, he nods. "Thank you." When James notices the Major Taylor sitting at the table, he quickly considers who she is and suddenly is very conscious of her grief. Second Platoon's commander's widow. A shame of his loss.

James follows the attendant to the front of the hall. When General Floyd approaches the podium, James stands stiffly at attention and listens to his speech. James looks down contemplatively as General Floyd begins speaking of the sacrifice of the second platoon. Good men, who deserved better. James watches as Major Taylor accepts her late husbands awards. She's going to have some rough days ahead. James continues to watch in relative silence as each of his team is awarded increases in rank and medals. James is mildly surprised when the high command acknowledges Mane's parents. Hmmm. Well played General. James smiles slightly as more rewards and praise are heaped onto the Nightstalkers.

James steps up onto the stage and accepts his award with the dignity and grace expected of an officer of the Coalition states. James nod's back at the Lt. Colonel, before having his breath taken from him at the sight of his sister, though it is mildly soured by the presence of her husband. James steps down from the stage, thankful of being out of the immediate spotlight. James makes his way to the table he's been instructed to sit at. James offers greetings to the others at the table, before turning to Major Taylor. "My condolences on your loss, I never met your husband, but I have heard he was a good man." James looks to Freeman. "Some dog and pony show huh, Lieutenant?" James orders the fish dinner when the attendants ask. James keeps up with the small talk, enjoying the chance to eat high cuisine. James seems thoughtful during the whole situation. It is nice to see Olivia, she looks happy. Major Harrison on the other hand is not someone I want to see today... sigh. I should go and speak with the Lieutenant Colonel before the nights over.

As Mane found himself at his table with Caesar and people he didn't know, the murder-cat sat there with a bored expression across his face. It took every ounce of discipline he could muster to not tap his fingers on the table, or worse, plant his elbows on the table and cradle his chin in his hands... maybe pull out his bionic eye and fidget with it. But he did none of that, knowing there would be severe consequences for any such childish behavior. He considered complaining to Caesar again, but the dog made it abundantly clear he didn't share Mane's lack of enthusiasm for the proceedings.

He glanced down at the glasses they set out for him and Caesar to use, with their dog-spouts. Again, it took every ounce of discipline in his being not to roll his eyes at degree of condescension they represented... like he cared. This was all a waste of time anyhow.

It was then that something caught Mane's eye. Movement from up above, behind the security glass of the balcony. Turning his attention to the motion, he saw people...

CS High Command wrote:A single balcony just from just beside the wall of glass which is covered in what looks to be transparent armored glass covering a door. Near the stage you see Major Smith, General Floyd, Lt. Colonel Carol Black, and Colonel Lyboc all sitting in places of honor.

... and not just people, but very important people. The kind of people he most assuredly did not make a bad impression with! The kind of people he wasn't sure if he was comfortable knowing that he even existed! He'd only seen pictures of some them before during his orientation period at Lone Star. But there they were... in the flesh!

And then it donned on him. If Top Brass individuals such as them were physically in attendance... not just watching with mild interest on a streaming feed from the comfort of wherever... but actually THERE, this proceeding must be vastly more important than he originally thought. This was something he was extremely privileged to be a part of!

With that realization and epiphany, Mane's attitude did a sudden 180. His demeanor became more somber and excited at the same time. The big cat's back straightened, removing any hint of a slouch. And his sensitive ears began to pan all about, trying to take in as much of his surroundings as he could. This was something he wanted to remember for the rest of his life, for odds were he would never see it's like ever again.

When the ceremony officially began, Mane took it positively serious. As his name was called, he stood immediately and proceeded up exactly as instructed during the rehearsal. The only thing he improvised was, once before General Ford, Mane knelt down on bended knee; both as a sign of respect and as a courtesy to prevent his colossal height from posing a hindrance to the General's reach.

CS High Command wrote:"And now, we honor the service of the 110th Special Tactics and Reconnaissance Company, First Platoon." Mane is up first. "Mutant Five-Delta-Six-Five-Seven-Six-Six-Five, Service Specialist, 110th Special Tactics and Reconnaissance Company, First Platoon. By recommendation of your unit's officers, you are hereby awarded a special commendation for bravery. You are also to be given special dispensation to join the military proper at the rank of Private.

As the camera flashed, preserving the moment forever, Mane realized a single tear was rolling from his one good eye. Being officially included into the Coalition, despite being a freeborn, meant more to him than he realized. More over having his AWOL, runaway parents favorably acknowledged ... during an official proceeding no less ... it was too much for his heart to bear.

CS High Command wrote:As the ceremony draws to a close, they are instructed to return to their seats. Dinner proceeds from there, with a menu consisting of an appetizer of Smoked Salmon, Crispy Potato Cake, Vermont Goat’s Cheese, and a choice of

  • Enchanted Springs Rainbow Trout, Shrimp ‘Rangoon’ Potsticker, Spicy Tomato, 'Hot' Basil Cream
  • Hand Rolled Basil Fettucini, Buffalo Mozzarella, Olive, Fennel, Capers

By the time Mane returned to his table, his tears had gradually escalated from weepy to full on Niagara Falls. While before he thought all this pomp and circumstance was a load of bullshit, now, he had fully realized that it was one of the most important moments of his life. He used the silk napkin set out before him to wipe the tears form his eyes and regain his composure.

And, yes, all of a sudden he did care about the special dog-spout on the glasses set out for him and Caesar to use! The care and effort that went into making them just for the mutants to help them maintain their dignity during special events like this... Mane marveled at the special glass and could feel the love in the air.

Turing to Caesar, his favorite hunting partner, Mane made a joyous proclamation. "It's a great day to be alive, Private First Class."

Taking his time handle the fancy utensils care and dignity, Mane dug into his smoked salmon with gusto and aplomb, secure in the knowledge he was exactly where he was supposed to be. Thereafter, the grilled duck breast was the most flavorful, delicious meal he had ever had; much more so than it actually was.

Still, I'm glad some of his unit made it back alive, and that their mission was completed. My son was very much a professional, and going out completing the mission, especially one where we're not even allowed to know any details beyond his heroism...well that would please him on the balance of things. I'll miss him dearly, as I miss my husband. But thank you for your kind words, and congratulations Captain. I haven't seen that many letters from the Emperor's son in quite some time. So thank you for your service and heroism. Doctor is not a title often heard in your circles. What are you a doctor of?"

There is an appreciative look on the General's face as he pins on the rank.

Mane wrote:"It's a great day to be alive, Private First Class."

One of the doctors at the table, a Major, smiles. "So you're Private Mane. My name is Doctor Jared Givens. I worked on your mother's design team. We're very glad you came back with us. You know, you two are in for a few treats when this is all over. We're going to take you on a tour of the Chi-Town genetics facility, including where they film Tales from the Creche-Babies. If you want, I can let you meet some of the pups. I know they'd love to meet a pair of bona-fide heroes like yourselves." He smiles and there is no patronization in his voice. He truly seems happy to see both of them, but especially Mane.

The woman at the table, a good looking, if obviously experienced soldier. Her rank of Command Sergeant Major sets her apart. There aren't that many CSMs in the army itself. Her hands are bionic, though she is wearing a cybernetic cover which covers the bits that might otherwise be open for bionic hands. She eats with practiced ease, however. She is quite beautiful, but there is a hardness to her. Among the rather large bank of ribbons on her uniform, you all see the ribbon and medal for the Iron Star, and the Joseph Prosek Medal for Valor, with additional star that indicates it was awarded twice. Her shoulder has the honor patch of the Fighting Joes of Second Battalion, one of the units famous for serving in Old Chicago. Suddenly the look in her eyes makes sense. You're looking at a true vet of the worst hell hole in the Coalition.

"If you boys ever want to transfer to regular army, or take over the Second's barracks at Fort Resilience, look me up. I'm with Second Battalion. Knew a lot of those guys in Second Platoon. Some served with me in Spec Ops before I switched to regular army years ago, and some of them I met there. Good folks all of them." She smiles.

CS High Command wrote:Major Taylor nods, smiling sadly. "I knew when my son was going to get into this line of work this was a possibility, but knowing and living it are not the same thing.

James smiles as warmly as his mangled face allows. "Oh initially, Cybernetics and Bionics, but I hold PHD's in Medical sciences and Mechanical and Electrical Engineering. I spent my early years in Lonestar with the 2nd Battalion. As of late though I spend more time mucking through fields than doing actual medical work." James says with a friendly tone. "As for the letters, that's a new one for me, I have not seen that many either. It makes me proud to be their commanding officer." It is a little strange. "Not that this is my first awards ceremony, it has just been a while. And special operations groups do not get recognized nearly as often as regular army it seems. Major Smith where do you run out of? I would assume Chi-town but with the amount of traveling I see among the brass here, I cannot say for certain."

CS High Command wrote:One of the doctors at the table, a Major, smiles. "So you're Private Mane. My name is Doctor Jared Givens. I worked on your mother's design team. We're very glad you came back with us...

As Doctor Major Givens introduced himself, Mane's progress of devouring his salmon slowed to a stop as a sense of bewilderment came to overwhelm him. The revelation took him by surprise. While he knew neither his mother nor his father would be able to be in attendance, the last thing he expected was for anybody even resembling family to be there.

With a slight tremble to his heavy hand, he placed utensils down. "You... were one of my mother's... creators?" he asked the man with an uncharacteristically timid voice.

As the words escaped his lips, a passage he read earlier from the Bible came to mind stating a commandment from God himself: Honor your father and mother, that your days may be long upon the land... Surely that extended to the parents of his parents as well... this man who was the equivalent of...

"...You know, you two are in for a few treats when this is all over. We're going to take you on a tour of the Chi-Town genetics facility, including where they film Tales from the Creche-Babies. If you want, I can let you meet some of the pups. I know they'd love to meet a pair of bona-fide heroes like yourselves.".

Regaining some of his normal confidence, and recomposing himself after having been starstruck, Mane began to speak in his normal tones. "Truth to tell I've only seen the pilot episode, but it would be an honor to be by your side for the tour of your facilities and meet the wee ones. ... Maybe that give them inspirational word or two while I'm there."

He then added, very cautiouly, "And Major... Sir... Would you be offended if I called you... Grandpa Givens?"

((Rolls Carried Over))

CS High Command wrote:"So it seems did you, Staff Sergeant. That's one hell of a jump. And the Iron Star to boot. I don't want to know what you guys did, but from one soldier to another, thank you that you did."

As the woman starts talking Egan gives her his full attention, his eyes quickly taking in her rank, unit patch, and plethora of medals adorning her uniform and gives her a single heartfelt nod in recognition of her thanks. "Honestly I've never really cared about rank, I would have been content with remaining a PFC for my entire career. Command seems to have other ideas, but if they want a Staff Sergeant, then that is what they will get." His voice matches his bewildered expression as he talks about his new rank, but it ends with conviction.
CS High Command wrote:"If you boys ever want to transfer to regular army, or take over the Second's barracks at Fort Resilience, look me up. I'm with Second Battalion. "The meat grinder..."Egan says softly before looking embarrassed. -No wonder she has that hardness about her, she's seen and lost more than any of us.- He speaks again quickly, an apologetic tone entering his voice. "I'm sorry. Growing up in the burbs that was one of the names I heard it called and I think it should be us thanking you for everything you do on a daily basis for us here Command Sergeant Major." With his glass still in hand, Egan raises it once more and solemnly offers a toast once more as the faces of those he knew and lost played through his mind. "For those that cannot be with us. We remember." He downs the rest remnants of his glass and sets it down. He takes a moment to gather himself before looking back over at CSM Grimm, "What made you decide to switch over from Spec Ops if you don't mind me asking?"

Caesar immediately got butterflies in his stomach when he noticed all of the top brass. He quickly scanned them to make sure Desmond Bradford wasn't there for some reason and relaxed, if only a little. He quickly scanned his senses to check for the supernatural. If some soupies got the drop on them with him and the high brass around, it'd be the Minnesota Front for him... if he was lucky.

The ceremony itself was a blur, a dream. A promotion! Medals for his squad mates! Free food! Caesar was swollen with emotion.

On his way to the "kids table," which was pretty well laid out, he had to admit, he flicked one of Snoopy's new medals. "We've made it a long way from Arizona, huh?"

Mane wrote:Turing to Caesar, his favorite hunting partner, Mane made a joyous proclamation. "It's a great day to be alive, Private First Class."

Caesar was also proud of Mane, making it into the regular army. If he had room in his head to think he'd be surprised that Mane's story about being freeborn was actually true and not some sort of experiment-derived delusion, like he'd thought all along. Anyways, Caesar turns to Mane and opens his mouth... but nothing comes out. Tears running down his face, Caesar simply lifts his special dog cup in a silent toast. He was a good boy. He was a very good boy.

"YES! Um, I mean yes Major, it'd be an honor. Sir. And don't listen to Mane here, we're all caught up on the show so we don't need to worry about spoilers."

Caesar gave Mane a glance that seemed to say, don't ruin this for me!

Having all the brass around makes Freeman nervous. Having so many people see his face and know his name makes him downright jumpy. He is supposed to be the faceless guy, hell he even has cybernetic implants that literally allow him to rearrange his face. Being on display like at a beauty pageant is the antithesis to his identity. Nonetheless, he knows how to work the room, to talk people up, and generally be a charming son of a bitch. He starts out by congratulating all his team members before floating around the room to get a minute with General Floyd.

"Sir, thank you for the gift of these two medals. I appreciate it. We wouldn't have been able to do this job if you didn't know how to balance giving us latitude and giving us direction. These really are your medals, earned by your leadership ability." Okay, maybe a little thick but Freeman's in penetrable charm makes it sound extremely sincere and convincing. And, in many ways he meant it. It's always easier to exaggerate a truth than to tell a lie.

After eating on the road, the meal is excellent. Although the Lieutenant is also painfully aware the right outside these walls hundreds of thousands are scrounging and stealing just to get enough. Fortunately, no one he knows is out there and he can enjoy being on the inside. Never along again. He reminds himself of his reason for joining up. Having backup meant everything. No more solo missions. Scanning the room he shrugs a little, Maybe a little less supervision though.

Continuing his rounds Freeman hand shakes, back slaps, and tells stories (to the extent allowed) about their mission. He avoids drinking but makes sure to top up whoever he is talking to.
