Background Story

Bruce's parents started out as young lovers with the world as their oyster, but then real life intruded. Jack, his father, operated a small fishing boat out of Victoria Haven and dabbled in smuggling. Rachel was the daughter of an executive of Sea Span Corp and grew up privileged in Perth. She was slumming in the Sprawl when she met Jack who had slipped into town on a run. After a night of romance they parted with plans for her to slip out of town on a Sea Span boat and rendezvous with Jack's vessel.

The young couple moved to Point Clare and life was good until Bruce made his appearance. In Perth the delivery would have gone smoothly but the Outback's lack of medical facilities resulted in complications that left Rachel severely weakened. She managed to linger for eight more years, doing her best to give her son at least the basics of an education. When she passed, Jack crawled into a bottle and left Bruce to his own devices. The young boy tried to keep his father's fishing business going but his lack of business sense led him to take more unsavory and risky jobs.

Finally he was working a sabotage job for a gang when he was double-crossed. The explosives detonated too soon and the last thing Bruce remembered was blinding pain before the darkness consumed him. When he finally awoke several weeks later, he was a changed man; fresh scar tissue roped across his face and arms and his legs could no longer support him like they used to. His rescuer recounted how Bruce had been found floating unconscious and badly injured; the Outback family took him in and nursed him back to health. Once he was well enough, Bruce left in the middle of the night, fleeing imagined pursuers and their retribution. Now Bruce moves often, working as a mechanic or taking whatever jobs he can find, legal or otherwise.
