Background Story:

Takamatsu... The "Great Amalgamation" of all types of modern Japanese society. Traditional samurai fought side by side with their cybernetic peers. Ninja came in all sizes, juicer, crazy and archaic. A typical home might have a hand-pumped well and a digital television. As many people rode horses as they did the bullet train. Modern soldiers and warrior monks comprised the Self Defense Force. Mages and techno-wizards rivaled high tech and engineers for the most amazing spectacles. They existed side-by-side, often in harmony with each other on the tiny island of Shikoku.

Hiroki came from the Okubo family, an ancient line of samurai. His father Hikaru was a traditional samurai. At his home, he forbade technology. They lived in a traditional rice paper and bamboo house. His mother Nagisaa was a traditional medieval Japanese housewife.

It was the night of a typhoon when Nagisaa gave birth to her fourth son, little Hiroki. He was a large baby, strong and healthy. Yet, when his father laid eyes on him, he immediately felt nothing but shame. In his eyes, Hiroki was a source of shame. The little boy had a clubfoot at the end of his pudgy little leg. That made him broken and useless as a samurai. The best he could ever accomplish, in his father's eyes. His father even began calling him Kowareta, meaning "Broken."

His mother took a much softer stance. Hiroki was her youngest son, and she loved him as he was. Though Hikaru hated him, she protected him. As he grew older, he heard his father's threats to throw him to the dogs, or drown him in the river, being useless, Nagisaa defended him, sometimes at the expense of a few slaps, and even a punch or two. The demure woman could do nothing against a trained samurai. The New Empire even had laws defending husbands who beat their wives with a "good cause."

Every day, she escorted him to the traditional school. Sometimes, even at age 4, he was allowed to watch baseball on the screen. He was enthralled by it. As he grew into age 6, he organized his peers into a baseball team against the other class. Being a strong lad, he belted balls out of the school yard. Ground hits, however, proved difficult. He simply had no coordination in his right leg to run.

He talked baseball with his mother. He told her of the latest performances of his favorite team, the Hiroshima-Toyo Carp. His favorite player Genjuro Mata played first base, just like he did on the school team. He batted home runs out of the field with every at bat. Well, maybe only to Hiroki in his hero worship. There was no doubt that Genjuro was a great player in the league.

Often, Hikaru was away battling oni. On one unfortunate afternoon, he came home early, eavesdropping on his son describing his exploits on the ball field. Immediately, he flew into a rage. "So little Kowareta is a baseball player? Where have you learned about this decadence?"

"School," the boy, now 7 said..

"Ohh, at school, eh?" He gave Hiroki a hard cuff to the back of the head, knocking him to the floor. Nagisaa intervened, and was knocked unconscious.

"Well, now it's you and me, and I'm going to do what I should have done long ago!"

Oh, by the g-ds, he is going to kill me! thought little Hiroki as his father grabbed him by the fundoshi and carried from their home.

He fought and kicked and struggled to break free. "Help! Help me!" he screamed to nobody who listened. He was a samurai's child. That was not their problem.

Hikaru had come home with his armour in a bag, and left his swords at home. He punched Hiroki a few times to silence him. The boy was woozy, but tougher than average. He continued to fight and kick as he was brought toward a seaside cliff. His father began to strangle him, losing his patience taking him up the cliff to fall to his death. "Shut up!"

Only two people heard. Well, one person and one thing. Only the thing was closest. An oni barged onto the trail from the forest, red eyes gleaming. "So, brave samurai and his defective son... You don't need to offer him to the G-ds. You can give him to me. I will eat him first, and then I will kill you for your impudence! This is my cliff!"

Hikaru threw his son at the oni and tried to run, showing his cowardice as he did. The oni caught Hiroki and threw him down, wanting to kill a real samurai that had slain so many of his kind. Hikaru had his fan and fought to defend himself. He landed a few chops on the oni, using his martial arts as well as he could. The oni grabbed his arm with the fan and twisted, breaking his radius and ulna in a spiral fracture. This was the same type of injury as child abusers give their children.

"I was going to kill you last, so you could watch me devour your son, but I think you would enjoy that. You die first..." said the oni as his claws pierced Hikaru's ribs and heart. He tossed the corpse aside and returned his attentions to the tender and delicious child who now sat in an unconscious heap.

Between them was the man who heard Hiroki's cries. He was dressed in a simple gi. The oni laughed. "Another puny little man between me and my meal? DIE!" he shouted as he charged the unarmored man. The oni landed the first punch, causing the man to grunt, yet he held his ground. The human had just absorbed a strike from oni claws with a few trickles of blood to show for it.

A fierce battle erupted, but the mere human seemed to have the advantage over the monster. His kicks stunned the monster. "This little one is not yours!" he barked. More kicks and punches landed, until the oni fell dead. Despite taking great damage himself, he hoisted the oni over his head, walked up to the cliff's ledge and tossed the dead demon into the sea below.

The man wrote a note, with fine calligraphy on paper he pinned to the tunic of Hiroki's dead father. It read, Do not despair for your husband who would have murdered the boy. His kharma met out what he deserved in the form of the oni. Your son is safe. For that, you are in my debt. I will take your son and make him the warrior his father never believed he could be. You will be proud of the man he will become. You will see him again, not soon, but when the time is right. In Buddha's Name, Arika Hanzo."

He grabbed the injured boy carefully and cradled him in his arms. As he walked down to the harbour. "Who are you? Where is my father? hiroki answered nervously.

Hanzo smiled, giving him his name. "Your father will endanger you no more. It was by fate's hand, not my own. You will be safe. Soon you will learn to defend yourself and the innocent from all manners of evil. Do you want to do that when you grow into a man?"

"I want to play baseball," Hiroki answered.

"Hahaha! Maybe you can do that to, but it will require hard work and sacrifice. Are you ready?" Hanzo put the boy down and encouraged him to walk at the best speed he could muster. When they reached the harbor, they found Hanzo's wooden boat and sailed to Honshu and the New Japanese Empire.

Training became harsh, but Hiroku persevered. His first duty every morning was a run. Whether he wanted to or not, he began to gain some speed in his legs. Hanzo was a patient sensei. He offered encouragement, when previously there was none. After the run, he would chop wood; another log was added every day until he was splitting hundreds. Hanzo began teaching basic martial arts, taught him the sword, and made him kick with his weak leg.

"We must train your weakness to be strong!" Hanzo always said.

At night, they studied books about the oni, and discussed how best to kill him.

While his clubfoot had grown stronger, he was still weak and slow. Hanzo invited a healer to his hut. The healer performed numerous psychic surgeries, straightening the leg and foot. After each of two dozen procedures, he wore a bamboo brace on his leg. Still, his training included running, jumping, climbing, fighting and demon studies.

After two years of this, his foot was more or less straight, and both legs were strong. "Now we make your legs weapons!" That precipitated his chagi studies. He was tied to a frame with elastic, made to kick in every direction. Up, down, left, right, front and behind. Every day, more tension was added. He was placed non a stump and made to kick over his head, destroying clay pots. Soon his legs were stronger, and able to topple trees, with much repetition.

"Now we study your primary weapon, the sword!" Hanzo gave him a boken and battled with the young teen for hours. Hiroki became quicker, faster. First he learned defense, then offense. Soon, the sword was just an extension of his arm and body. It took commands directly from the brain, as if the sword had a mind of its own.

"What is weak on you now boy? Not your legs! Hanzo asked.

After careful deliberation, he pronounced, "My hands and arms cannot do what my legs can."

"Ahh a wise apprentice indeed!"

So began his Kanshu training. Every day, he plunged his hands into barrels of rice, then sand and gravel. He was made to do them almost for all of the daytime. Then he learned other means of combat. Wrestling. He was strapped to another frame, and made to lift 50 gallon drums into the air with ropes and pulleys. Just as it was getting easier, more weight was added. He still chopped wood every day, but his iron hands stopped hurting and blistering. It was becoming easy.

Other students came to the dojo from a local karate school in the village. "Attack him! Hanzo said. "And you, take these kicks, focus your inner strength to absorb." After that, he was made to practice martial arts katas under the waterfall. He nearly drowned the first few times, but then his strength began to absorb the damage, from kick, punch and gravity.

He practiced boxing, western style to improve his speed in battle. There was more lifting, chopping, beating, plunging and training every day.

"Now we will train your mind. The first thing you will learn is to meditate. Then we will train you for spells! Hanzo proclaimed. Hiroki's mind emptied, and he sat still, for longer and longer periods, focusing on inner strength.

"Now the time has come to learn the truth. Strength alone will not make you a demon queller. We must use what magic the g-ds have given us. These are but the basics. You will learn more in your travels and experiences."

And so Hiroki began to learn the words needed for incantations. After he memorized the lot, he learned how to focus his energy behind the words, Suddenly, spells came to life, simple, intermediate and the more powerful.

What little offtime he had, he spent practicing baseball. He needed a hobby. Hanzo allowed this and assisted as well as he could. He organized boys in the area to play, from sons of samurai to eta boys. Hiroki tried to teach all of them that anyone could overcome their circumstances by trying. He had great fun. It was a nice break from training, yet Hanzo had an ulterior motive. He was getting more running and strength, and learning how to use blunt weapons.

He arrived back to Hanzo's hut after each game. "Now what is weakest on you?"

Hiroki looked down at his bruised and scraped body, from training and sports and other misadventure, he realized he did not have the technique Hanzo did. He'd seen Hanzo survive sword strikes, the claws and teeth of oni. He'd even seen him survive a .45 caliber bullet when he got amorous with a farmer's daughter. "My flesh."

So training in chi gung, using his inner strength to harden his flesh and skin. He'd be bombarded by baseballs, hammered by karate students. His teacher encouraged him to resist the power. Soon, he could survive a blow from a sharp blade, and he faced MANY of them.

While continuing to train, he was taken on demon hunts by Hanzo. First he watched, then he helped, and eventually, during his 17th year, took the lead slaying oni.

"You are ready to go on your own now, Hiroki. We demon quellers do not often work together. It is better that our strength and ability be lent to other warriors as they battle evil. You will travel on your own, until you find such a group. Help those in need. Charge what they can afford for your services. Protect the innocents, but expect the wealthy to pay their share for your equipment and tithing. The g-ds will be with you, as long as you are on the side of good."

Hiroki returned to his home, finding his mother living alone. His brothers were all samurai, and off on their own adventures, well, not the second and third, who had fallen in battle. His mother Nagisaa recognized her son, and hugged him tearfully. "Your father never accepted you. But I am proud of what MY son has become!"

"Thank you, mother." he said with tears in his own eyes. "I will return home from time to time, and will stay two nights here. Then I must go where my fates take me."

So he rested and dined in the home of his mother for two days and two nights. As he walked out, she gave him one last hug, and presented him a bundle wrapped in silk. "Your father would never permitted me to give this to you, but I want you to have it," she said.

They bid each other sayonara as he stepped out into the world. He began to hunt demons on his own, taking down more than a few. One day, he was in pursuit of a monster, running as quickly as he could. He saw the monster dive into a cave. As he approached, the demon managed to spring a trap, opening a rift as soon as Hiroki entered the cave. He found himself on another continent. One that he never knew existed. There were humans, Americans, they said. He knew their language as English.

Asking directions to the nearest town, he was sent down the road with all his possessions on his back. Soon he arrived in a new town, searching for work.
