At the age of 7, my family fell from grace with the black Market through no fault of their own, but from betrayal. Age 10, I went to work learning the family trade; gambling, pick pocketing, learning cards and so on. Age 13, lost my mother to the Coalition. Age 19, father was gunned down in cold blood or so I thought.

It is not often I think about pivotal moments in my life. But, driving away from the game of my life at the age of 30, I was in my newly won hot pink Big Wheel unicycle heading away from the burbs. Nothing was really there for me anymore. As I wiggle around in my seat to get more comfortable, my thoughts drift back to how I scored this sweet ride.

I drifted into this little no name Podunk town, little did I know that there was going to be a big payday and running for my life. I had left Chi-town in hopes of re-establishing myself and getting away from Mistress Watterson (she’s the one who betrayed my family). She had been riding me hard to complete some odd jobs that were high on risk factor. No way was I putting my tentacles out for her with the Black Market already breathing down our necks.

So back to that big payday I was talking about earlier. I stopped off to get something to wet my thirst and fill my belly. My feet hurt, my back hurt and my pockets were fairly empty. It was high time to find some action when Mr. Big Payday himself walked in the door where I was currently pondering my existence and a way to “legally” swindle someone. Mr. Payday was a Knorr Devilman by the look. Brawn, yes! Brains, not so much. Easy Target! It must be my lucky day. He must have never dealt with a Krak before, because he sat down next to me.

This would be so easy. I looked him up and down seizing him up. Apparently, I was beneath his notice because he ignored me. Or he just did not see me. I pulled out a deck of cards and started playing with them. Nothing showy, just some solitary. After a few minutes, he took notice. Saw wee little me and probably thought the same as most of my marks do. Easy pickings! He chuckled under his breath as I pretended I was a little stumped for my next move. I pretended to glower at him as I continued to ponder. Finally after what seemed like 5 minutes (big oaf probably could not have lasted much longer) he leaned over to tell me what was so clear to the entire world.

“So, you like to play with cards huh?” he asked.

“Yup!” I exclaimed in my best little girl voice.

“Ever play anything besides that?” he asked again.

“No, but have wanted to learn how to play poker!” I said wistfully.

“I can teach you, if you want to learn.” He said in a tone that is definitely for humoring little girls.

And twenty minutes later. Payday happened. Time to blow this joint! Especially, since I have worn out my welcome again. Brain is still trying to control brawn and this little shyster is not going to be around when he finally gets his feet working instead of his hands. Damn, I still got the magic touch.

To this day it still makes me grin on how I got away with it. Now I am looking for a place to park and find my next marks. Funds are running low again.
