Spring – PA 106

Spring - PA 107

So many of these people have sob stories - all they do is bitch and moan about the thing that killed their parents, or the guy who got away. I can’t imagine what that must be like. It sounds so fucking depressing. Bad things happen to everyone, and in this world they are a dime a dozen. You might have two arms today and none tomorrow. You might have a wife and a kid this week and they might be Fury Beetle food next week. I find that people can either get suckered into revenge and despair or just accept that the shitty things in life are going to keep happening, and that the only thing that makes it any better is when you learn from it. Use it to improve your life. Make it make you a better person. That’s all you can do to be okay with this world.

Pops said I should write about what we’ve been through so that I can tell my kids about it someday. Who knows if I’ll even have kids, but I told the old man I would and here I am.

He was born somewhere south. He doesn’t know where, as far as I know. My dad traveled, fixing things mostly. He saw his fair amount of fighting with Merc groups and the like, until he ended up with her. He doesn’t like to talk about it much anymore. And mom, may she rest in peace, was from Tolkeen. She was always smiling and always carefree. I’d like to think that that’s where I got it from. She’s been gone a year and a half now. He’s never been the same, a sad shell of a man - drinks too much, cries too much. I wouldn’t wish that on my worst enemy. I love him but I’ve got to get away from him. I’m proud of the man I am, and I know he is too. He’s just not the same as he used to be. He taught me a lot but mom was always my favorite. With a dad who’s a mechanic and a mom who was a mage, I don’t think I could have ended up anything but what I am. I’m okay with what I am.

Fall – PA 108

We left Tolkeen when I was 18. War is coming, and we knew it. Some stayed to fight. We decided, like a lot of our neighbors, to leave. It wasn’t an easy decision. It took us almost a year to get down here, to Arzno. I almost find it amusing that we made it all the way here, deal with all that crap, just to have another set of problems - vampires. I don’t like to talk about things that truly bother me. This is one of them. She’s gone, they killed her. That’s all there is to it. I’ve heard people recount in great, painful detail how their loved ones died in their arms. Fact is – I wasn’t there. Doesn’t mean it didn’t suck, doesn’t mean she’s not gone.

So that happened. Moving on – I finished my schooling, learned my craft. Put my demons behind me, so to speak. I might characterize myself as numb, but that’s not necessarily a bad thing. Someone once asked me who I am, why I deserve to live. I’m not anyone special. I mean, don’t get me wrong, I’m a badass in my own right and I do just fine, But I’m not one of the guys who things they are God’s gift to the world. I do what I do, and I like it just fine. I can laugh and drink, I’m a shithead and I make fun of everything. I practice my craft like a pro, but there’s always someone out there who’s quicker, or smarter or stronger than me and I’m okay with that. I’m just me. I like to wing board, I like to collect and tinker, to work out, and I especially like to kill vampires - and I’m okay with that.

Spring PA 109 -

Most people in my profession; mechanics, operators, line walkers, mystics and the like, they don’t like to fight. They don’t like to fly into the thick of things on a wingboard with a flaming sword and kick ass. I like to fight. I like the challenge and the raw energy of it. Love it! There’s nothing better than being smarter or stronger than the person you’re clashing blades with and coming out on top of some bastard who thought you looked like a child and might make easy prey. I don’t respect people who prey. I’ll take what I need when I need it, and that’s what you’ve got to do in this world but if you steal and hurt just because you can – you’re a shitty person and you deserve what comes to you. And sometimes I’ll go out of my way to help some poor schmuck who got stepped on, and sometimes I won’t. I’m a fickle man, and I’m cool with that. I do what pleases me, and try to be moral about it.

I've been in love. I've lost people. Lots of freaking people. I've fought battles – large and small. I’ve learned spells and piloted machines of war and helped save a town called [name removed] from a vampire clan. I’ve been through thick and thin and I’ve lived what already, at 22, feels like a lifetime. I've built things that make me feel like a giddy little boy. I’ve killed and I’ve been hurt and had people die in my arms. I’m okay with that.

I’m not sure where I’m headed next, but I have this feeling that its going to be a nutty year.
