Background Story

Anatoly sighed as he pulled up on the reins. A Cossack's home was never a place or a building. It was in his saddle, and next to his people. Their journey was ending for a time, and this place was as good as any other. The land was strange to his eyes, further than he had ever ridden. When his Clan rode hard from the East, they were pursuing strange supernatural creatures that numbered in the hundreds. Those same creatures laid waste to the Cossacks who heroically pursued them, littering the landscape with the bodies of men and mounts. In that moment, the die was cast. Lesser men would scoff at the notion that the surviving Cossacks would continue hunting the demons in search of justice. Only a fraction of them remained, and at full strength they were no match for their unholy adversaries. As a Cossack, though, there was nothing else to be done. Vengeance was all that was left to the survivors.

They had ridden far to the west, through the land of his mother's people. In quiet moments, she spoke fondly of a place she called 'Poland'. Around his father, however, she was only a Cossack. Whether by vow or blood, one's identity as a Cossack surpassed any other. His mother remained by his side, but his father had been buried weeks ago. Afterwards his people danced, and drank, singing songs of the heroes they had laid to rest. This was their way. It was not uncommon to enjoy the company of the Clan or of others from time to time. For Anatoly, he did not need a cause to celebrate. He drank to forget. He drank to feel alive.

Anatoly lost his father and three older brothers as they led the charge. Anatoly remained to watch over the women and children. He was shamed at his duty, but Mokosh must have had a reason to leave him dishonored but alive. He began to understand that now. Before he joined his fallen family in the afterlife, he might yet have the gift of taking a demon or two with him. The Clan survivors swore to one another that no vow could be made to supplant their call to vengeance.

His Uncles were the Clan elders, and they shared word that a group of powerful foreign Warlords were fighting against these demons. These Warlords were not like the Russian warlords though- but rather a powerful nation of many men, led by a council of Warlords. The Bryanov clan spurned the advances of each Russian Warlord camp they passed through. The true Warlords of Russia were little more than barbarians. They professed to be protecting the Russias from the supernatural evil that plagued them. They were nothing but base men, and pursued base desires. They wanted power, and wealth. Even those who remained loyal to the Russian people were ineffective. Clan Bryanov remained fiercely independent, joining a cause when it suited them, and leaving the cause when it suited them.

Now, their cause was vengeance. That meant riding towards the sunset. Russia was behind them, The demons who destroyed their family were somewhere ahead. If they could find these German warlords, they together might be able to drive the demons back. That was a cause worth serving. The settlement they found this night would keep them until the Cossacks regained their strength. They would offer to help their new neighbors, and live peaceably alongside them while camping beyond their walls. If the demons found them first, so be it. They would find more than they bargained for in the path of the Cossack charge. Anatoly clung to that. What else did he have now?
