Akito grew up on a farmland by the Baltic Sea under the leadership of Warlord Seriyev. His parents were able to get him an apprenticeship with the local blacksmith (Konnikov Valerian (Lera) Anatolievich). It was the Mistress Lera who introduced him to the gods. Akito didn’t know what to think about the gods for many years, however he listened to his mistress, followed the blacksmith, and did everything she did. Valerian Konnikov performed miracles. She was able to make normal objects in a fraction of the time. Heros of the lands would come and visit to convince Lera to make various weapons for their fights. Lera would question the heros to find out why they needed these weapons. Sometimes she chose not to make the weapons. When Akito asked why she would not, her response varied, from “They are not worthy” to “The risks are too high”.

With Valerian Konnikov in town the warlord camp left the town alone. On Akito’s 18th birthday, both himself and Master Lera were traveling back to the town with supplies. There was going to be a party. Akito was excited, he was on the verge of becoming a blacksmith in his own right. As the two were riding into town, a platoon of soldiers and cyborgs had already attacked the town. The lead soldier was interrogating the Mayor when a scout drew his attention to the wagon.

“So, the powerful hero returns. Just in time to see the mayor die for his treason.” The leader un holstered his pistol, put the barrel to the mayors head and pulled the trigger. With a silent pull of the trigger, blood started to flow from the back of the mayors head and pooled on the ground. The guards let the captive go, the body just flopped, face first. Akito can still remember the coldness of the the eyes of the killer, the smirk he had after the trigger was pulled.

Mistress Lera was in rage. She reached back, grabbed the sledgehammer, and leaped from the wagon to just in front of the leader. The sledgehammer came crashing down on the head of the assassin. In one leap, Mistress Lera cleared the distance between the wagon and the group of soldiers, and brought the hammer of Justice to the man responsible for the murder of the town.

Akito wa paralyzed in fear. These were soldiers, they had superior weapons. The smell of blood and oil mixed together, the sounds of hydraulics failing mixed with the sounds of bones being crushed. Screams suddenly silenced, robotic orders being drowned out by more screams. Mistress Lera had achieved vengeance, but at what cost? The Platoon of soldiers from the war camp totally destroyed, her armor shredded, burn and cut marks all over her body. She was at her limits. As the last body landed on his knees, his hands opened up to reveal a Plasma grenade with the pin pulled. Mistress Lera looked down and saw her end. Akito made eye contact with his Mistress one last time, saw love and sorrow in her eyes. Love for the town, love for Akito and sorrow that it was all over. They held their gaze for what seemed to be an eternity. Akito rushed to the now lifeless body of his mentor, his teacher, his friend. There was no pulse, nothing he could do to help her.

He spent the rest of the day burying the dead town. All of them. His neighbors, childhood friends, girlfriends, customers, and his parents. That night he only had one more to do.

He woke up that morning a child, he went to sleep well on his way to a grown man. He relived the day in his dream. The fighting, the killing, the dying. Over and over. Until he saw the light coming from the blacksmith shop. At first he started to walk towards it, in the middle of the fight. all he could hear was the battle behind him. As he got closer, there was a figure standing by the anvil beating some metal. The battle noise getting softer, the hammer noise getting louder. ding, ding, ding, ding, ding, ding. Until that was all he heard was the working of the anvil.

“Who are you?” asked Akito.

The figure stopped working the anvil, put the hammer down and turned toward the question. The battle remained muted as if the world knew this discussion was more important than this fight, that this discussion would shape the future.

“For someone who have been taught, you choose not to see me?” The figured replied.

“What do you mean? I don’t understand.”

The figure pointed to the battle. “She protected you, she prayed for you, she died for you.”

Tears started to form in the young mans eyes. “What was I supposed to do? She was blessed by the gods.”

“GODS? YOU THINK THE GODS CARE ABOUT YOU MORTALS?” Boomed the shadowed figure.

“THEN TELL ME WHO YOU ARE! WHY ARE YOU HERE?”The shadowed figure turned towards the fire, standing before Akito is a 7 foot tall muscular man, with bright red hair and beard.

“For one, stop you're snivering and crying. You’re a man now, act like one. Now stand up. Contrary to what i’m seeing now, you are strong. I have seen it.
Your mentor prayed for you, you know. She thought you had what it took to be one of my smiths. She was right, but you have to want it. It’s your choice.”

“If you’re a GOD then why didn’t you do anything?” Akito asked, teeth clenched. “Nevermind. Its apparent you don’t care. I’ll help people, even when you don’t”

“Then do it. Take Valerians’ hammers and tongs. They were her masters before her and his masters before him. Take care of these tools. Without them you will not make what is needed for your journey. You will not serve any one nation, king, people, or army. You are to inspire people, not do everything for them. These gifts must be given of your own free will. If you violate any of these tenets you will be punished. Do you agree?”

“What if I don’t?”

“Then it will be a very short adventure.”

“Fine. I agree.”

“Then wake up, bury your master, use her tools for the betterment of all of mankind.”

It was morning time. He felt more stronger, different. He buried his mistress, he picked up her sledgehammer, put on the work belt with the three golden hammers and tongs, and looked at her burial site. “Thank you. Thank you for all you have done. I have learned everything from you. I promise you, I will do right by you and make you proud of me.” Akito turned around, walked out of town, leaving this life behind him and embarking on a new journey.
