Background Story
A proper introduction requires that I familiarize you with where I am from. My home is a scant 200 miles from Star City, on the planet Alfheim, home of the Star Elves and their High King Silverlight.

I am a scion of House Idralion, or House Starfall. House Idralion was established when the Star Elf Maelowen - who was an astronomer - was charged with learning all he could about the rare and destructive Idral meteor showers, which seemed to occur at random intervals. After months of study, he was able to accurately predict the next occurrence, and prove his hypothesis that the Idral asteroid field occupied an oblong and unstable orbit. His prediction enabled High King Silverlight to issue edicts that saved hundreds of lives. For Maelowen's efforts, he was rewarded by the High King with the name Idralion, establishing the nobility of his house in perpetuity. The sigil of House Idralion is the constellation Libris - 6 stars in the shape of an open book.

The seat of House Idralion is an opulent mountaintop villa, a building of domes and spires, resembling nothing so much as an orrery. It has a tower which uses an ingenious hydraulic system to travel clockwise about the structure, and the great hall of the main house holds a holographic projector, which fills the interior of it's three-story space with an accurate and moving star map of the Anvil Galaxy. Members of House Idralion are almost unfailingly scholars, and have a long-established reputation for scholarly renown. I say "almost unfailingly" because there is one failure.

The second son of Maelowen's son Alarion did not pursue the scholarly arts. Invested at birth with psychic gifts, he chose instead of the scholar's path, to explore his inner self. He devoted himself to the pursuit of the physical and mental ideal, to unlock preternatural abilities in himself. He was met, for his efforts, with ill favor from his father. For his pursuits, he was disenfranchised from the family's good graces, and is currently a pariah. His betrothed, Seldanna Ravaran, desires him to "come to his senses" and follow the family doctrine - to return to Alfheim and take a position at the Celestial Observatory, and has vowed not to marry him until he does.

I am Kaedras Idralion, second son of Alarion Idralion son of Maelowen known as Idralion, founder of House Starfall. It is my desire to follow in the steps of my grandfather, and use my skills to cement a legacy of my own.

  • What emotion best describes your character?
    Worry. Kaedras is a satchel of various worries. He fears coming up short in his efforts to improve himself and positively impact those whose lives he touches. Among these concerns, he dreads failing his family, and is wracked with guilt by their reaction to his career path, and seeks to excel in his adventures even if only to mend his family relationships and reputation.
  • What emotion does your character evoke in others?
    Among his family, Kaedras is the black sheep, and they find him irksome. If only he'd elected to finish his formal education and enter the family industry. His friends on Alfheim find him confusing at best - a scion of a noble house risking everything, for nebulous reasons. His betrothed is heartbroken - she had hoped, despite the arranged circumstances of their relationship, to grow close to him as he finished his education, but instead he seemingly fled the planet. She ardently hopes he returns, and fears for the future they will have if he is too much changed.
  • What does your character need most?
    Kaedras needs a grounding in the realities of the universe. He is not self-sufficient, despite his upbringing, and must rely on others to accomplish anything in his chosen path.   • What is your character’s goal in life?
    Kaedras is a space-age Knight-Errant. He seeks to travel and see the universe, to learn and improve himself, and to leave each place better than he found it.
  • How does your character believe this goal can be accomplished?
    Kaedras hopes that by putting himself into "the thick of it" - wherever he finds trouble, by acting to intercede - that he will incrementally tip the balance of the universe toward goodness, inasmuch as he is able.
Background
  • Where did your character come from?
    Kaedras was born on Alfheim, home of the Star Elves, to a house of minor nobility: House Idralion. From his background: "The seat of House Idralion is an opulent mountaintop villa, a building of domes and spires, resembling nothing so much as an orrery. It has a tower which uses an ingenious hydraulic system to travel clockwise about the structure, and the great hall of the main house holds a holographic projector, which fills the interior of it's three-story space with an accurate and moving star map of the Anvil Galaxy."
  • When did you grow up?
    In some ways, Kaedras is still childlike. He reached physical maturity at the same age as most Star Elves (who are a long-lived species), but emotional and intellectual maturity are works in progress. He is considered frivolous and naive by his family, and peculiar by his friends.
  • What values does your character hold?
    Kaedras hates injustice - the subjugation of one sentient by another, and believes all sentient beings should be free and equal. He does not believe in false honor - that one should be lauded for minor accomplishments; nor that one should be lauded alone for the accomplishments of a group. He might be considered "principled" but for a strong chaotic streak that allows him to consider rash action.
  • How does your character dress?
    Kaedras dresses conservatively most of the time, but does not share the nobility's rigorous sartorial expectations. In public, he wears his armor, mostly, under a tabard bearing his house sigil (mostly out of habit). Alone, he dresses for comfort, and can be found shoeless and shirtless if the temperature is moderate. Among Elves, he is considered a "natural spirit" - one of those elves whom is most at home in nature, and as such, when he is safe and there is no risk of offending, he prefers as little unnatural material between himself and the elements as possible.
  • What are your character’s means?
    While Kaedras' family is wealthy, he has been cut off, until he ceases this nonsense and returns to his family and his position. Therefore, 100% of his living must be earned through his adventures.

  • What are your character’s personal tastes?
    Kaedras is acclimated to the finer things, but is also quite curious about the universe, and so will usually be willing to try new experiences - within reason.
  • What are your character’s opinions?
    Kaedras believes that all people should be free to choose their own path in life, so long as they do not harm others. Kaedras believes it is the responsibility of the powerful to care for the weak, that might serves right. Quixotically, though, Kaedras does believe that what is seized from villains may be used in the furtherance of justice, thus has no compunction against what might be considered "stealing" from criminals. His philosophy might best be described as "utilitarian moral imperative" - to do the best thing for the most people by whatever means possible.
  • What is your character’s comfort zone?
    Kaedras is most comfortable in solitude, where he can meditate, read, and self improve. The entire point of his sojourn, however, is to take himself out of this comfort zone and force self-improvement under difficult circumstances - which Kaedras feels is the best way to expand oneself.
  • Who has had the biggest impact on your character’s life?
    Oddly, his elder brother Castien, who has treated him with nothing but scorn since childhood. He feels Castien is burdened by his position as heir-apparent of House Idralion, and so this was perceived burden as demonstrated by his brother was a catalyst for Kaedras to explore other options. Similarly, Castien's unending castigations of his brother - lack of skill, lack of purpose, lack of discipline - caused Kaedras to hone and refine himself. In many ways, Kaedras evolved in the ways he has to defy his brother. In other ways, to seek his approval.
  • What are some of your character’s unexpected quirks?
    Playing Kaedras, I realized that I expected him to be ambivalent toward his arranged betrothal toward Seldanna, but I think he may actually have genuine feelings for her. Also, I think I developed Kaedras to be a sort of "swashbuckler" type, but I have found that his reserved nature and naivete' indicate that he has much to learn before he develops the confidence to be the quippy, witty bravo I had envisioned.

  • What kind of story does your character belong in?
    Kaedras needs to be in a story that helps him develop as a character, allows him to atone with his family without compromising himself, and affords opportunity for him to do good and memorable things - to make a name for himself outside that of his lionized House.
  • What role does your character fill?
    Kaedras is a support fighter/healer. He hopes to develop into more of a front-line fighter as well as hone his investigative abilities. He can also serve as a utility character, courtesy of his Mimic Skills psionic ability, which enables him to duplicate necessary skills if a needed skill-jockey is rendered unable to use their skill.
  • What should the other players know about your character?
    He's not an asshole - and his feelings are deeper than he reveals. He does not speak lightly, and he does not vow frivolously. Also: he values and is entertained by jokes and camaraderie, even if it may appear on the surface that he does not.
  • What is your play style?
    I try to play each character as a distinct person. If my characters in two different games seem too similar, then I have failed. I try to instill as distinct a personality and "voice" to each character as possible, and to think the way they would think when faced with challenges. I enjoy situations that cause my character to adapt and grow, and I really enjoy when that leads to the character "taking on a life of their own" - when I find myself making decisions my other characters wouldn't, if it serves the character in question.
  • How do you want your character to die?
    How is not as important as whether or not it suits the narrative. I would be very disappointed if he died a stupid or jokey death. Preferably, if he dies in action, it is in the accomplishment of some greater cause, in self-sacrifice.

1. Is the character verbose or stoic? Often considered stoic, Kaedras considers himself "reserved"
2. Is the character funny or dour? Neither funny nor dour, but he probably reads as dour. However, he has not lost the love of life that dourness implies, nor is he a jokester, but not above the occasional wry comment.
3. Is the character a follower or a leader? A follower who aspires to lead, and knows he has much to learn.
4. How does the character react when under pressure? Kaedras tries to think problems through, rather than rely on gut instinct.
5. Does the character volunteer for tasks? Yes - he is eager to prove himself in the interests of self-betterment and justice.
6. Is the character friendly? To the character's team, to strangers? He is as friendly as his upbringing allows. Among elves, he is considered gregarious.
7. Does the character offer mercy? To those who merit it.
8. Is the character curious and/or adventurous? Yes to both - he longs to see the universe, and to learn what he can from it, and improve the lives of those he can.
9. Is the character prejudiced about anything? Kaedras does not like criminals who take advantage of others, and will be slow to give even reformed criminals the opportunity to reoffend.
10. How does the character react to aliens? Each person is an individual, to be judged on their own merits. He is curious about alien customs, and will be deferential to them when possible.
11. How does the character react when the character is the victim of prejudice? He is likely to be confused. How can anyone hate an elf? Preposterous.
