ALPHA: Born Again

Postby Blackhaunt » Sat Sep 12, 2020 4:20 pm

"Hey Art! Come help me get this fire ready. Y'know you're stronger than the rest of us. Split a log in one chop, ya can."

Theodore "Cousin Theo" Rogers had just come back from a long day of collecting cans, cleaning windshields and grabbing leftovers to put together for dinner. It was time to prepare for the nightly fire that gathered his encampment, ironically dubbed 'The Oasis'. Food was pooled, everyone got an equal share to eat and a chance to share their stories. Arthur Compton or Big Art as he was known throughout the camp was the best cook around. Also the strongest. Cousin Theo had come to depend upon him for support as the older man found life harder and harder on the streets.

"Arty! Where ya at boy?" Cousin Theo put his things down and began the brief walk to the shanty down the way where Big Art resided. Most others weren't back yet and things were quiet. But Big Art knew to be back before dinner needed to start. This was unlike him.

Cousin Theo reached Big Art's shanty and instantly knew something was wrong. The structure may have been made of ramshackle material but there was assuredly not a large gash in the wall like this. And was that... blood?

RETROPOLIS
Date: Monday, April 6th, 2043
Weather: Outside: Cloudy, raining, warm (60 degrees Fahrenheit)
Time: 9:00 am

The Alpha team of Omegas filters into the War Room. Lance Steele is standing at the head of the table. There is coffee in the pot and pastries/fruit on a tray. Once everyone is seated, he begins.

"Welcome Alpha. Let's get into it. John Mason's family checked up on him once per week. He was homeless but not without relations. His sister reported him missing from his tent in Brisby Flats on Wednesday. This report triggered a system flag, as he marked the fifteenth homeless person to go missing since Sunday, March 29th. We've got files on the rest of them as well. This is obviously a pattern that needs to be resolved quickly. Possible scenarios are a serial killer, a cult, or mass experimentation. Either way you slice it, it's bad for the city and for our homeless citizens. Speaking of 'slice', the only similarities between any of these disappearances is the use of a sharp edged object of some sort to open their tents. A knife, a sword, something." Lance pauses for a moment and refocuses his attention on Brute.

"The Director has chosen your group for this assignment as she thought it might have some...personal meaning to Mr. Jackson. I don't know if you still have any leads from your time on the street, but anything to get to the bottom of this would be helpful. Hit me with any questions you've got quickly. We've got to clear this room in the next hour for the Bravo briefing."

He slides each of you a folder with a list of names and basic data on the missing folks.

Plants don’t get bored easily, so if Maia is left to her own devices she will simply stay in the garden until it is time to go. She is unfamiliar with the concept of ‘briefings’, and anyone attempting to explain it to her will be met with muted telepathic mutterings, to the effect of ”HUMANS. ALWAYS. COMPLICATE.” At the same time, however, as her roots settle in and drink in the place, she reflects on her experiences of the day. After her meeting with Haven, and Brute’s earlier assurances, she feels reasonably content with the grounds. But she recognizes that she still has much to learn about the surrounding environment, and she won’t get anything done just sitting there. Though she is slow to rouse when the time comes (particularly if the briefing is inside), she will remain silent as she disentangles from the local flora and disperses until she is close enough to the briefing room that she can observe what transpires inside.

Jackson?? Who? Assuming Brute reacts, Maia will deduce Steele’s meaning. Ah. Humans. So many different names. Much simpler with just one. She listens to the rest of the briefing, but her interest rapidly wanes as it becomes clear that this is largely a human internal matter. Some of the weakest in the herd have gone missing- it is sad, but it is also inevitable. Of course, it is in the humans’ nature to fight the inevitable- one of the things that makes them so dangerous. Hence the briefing. At first, she’s mildly irritated at having to waste her time with a task that seems to be purely the business of the infestation, but Maia is aware that she made an alliance with these creatures, and she supposes that it will take more than beating down a gigantic reptile to cement it. Then, she realizes that this is a good opportunity for information-gathering, in a relatively safe capacity. Maia is unaccustomed to the subtle approach; the novelty alone was amusing and worth trying out. Desperate times call for desperate measures. Being illiterate, the folders were of no interest to Maia- once the briefing is concluded, she will return to the garden by the most expedient route possible. Once there, however, she resists the urge to climb back into the three- instead, rematerializing her plant body and summoning her crystal armor. Then, she waits. Once any of the rest of Alpha poke their heads out, they will find her standing almost at attention, and Maia will say ”WHEN WE LEAVE?”

Fifteenth?

Clint shakes his head, trying to concentrate. FIFTEENTH?

He rubs his forehead as the files are slid over, and goes looking through them, for familiar faces, names.

Streetwise 64% 1d100 = 50 (What do I know about John Mason - SUCCESS)

Streetwise 64% 1d100 = 46 (What do I know about Rita Chamberlain - SUCCESS)

Streetwise 64% 1d100 = 69 (What do I know about Macy Greenwood - FAIL)

Streetwise 64% 1d100 = 46 (What do I know about Douglas Montgomery - SUCCESS)

Intelligence 54% 1d100 = 46 (look for patterns - things the victims had in common - beyond homelessness - common associates, places frequented, drug of choice, etc. - SUCCESS)
Criminal Science (doesn't include Forensic Medicine) 57% 1d100 = 67 (look at commonalities with regard to any criminal activities of the disappeared, criminal associates, etc. - FAIL)

If he knows some of the missing individuals, and was friends with them, he looks crestfallen as he goes through the files, but says nothing.

This is a lot of data to sift through, and we're going to have to put feet on the ground, go back to the Oasis again, and see who's seen what. Maybe someone'll talk to me today. Clint remembers, not that long ago, he'd tried to find his friends from his days before the Omegas, when he himself had been homeless. These people protected him, saved his life. He owed them everything.

He gathers the files up and stands.

"Thank you, Agent Steele. Please tell CSPD to lower their red flag threshold to five individuals. I know they're 'only' homeless people but..." He bites his tongue. "Thank you."

Maia wrote:”WHEN WE LEAVE?”

Clint, a look of grim determination on his face, replies, "Not soon enough." He looks to Barricade and Crucible. "Gear up - we're leaving as soon as everyone's ready. I have some contacts in the homeless community, so we'll try to do some investigating. Also - if you have an overcoat or something, wear it - these folks don't trust cops."

And with good reason - most of them have been beaten for crimes like sleeping on a bench or begging for change at least once.

Tom keeps an eye out for any lingering hints of trouble as C.H.I.M.E.R.A. plays cleanup with the Megasaurs. When ordered to report for yet another physical he throws up his arms. "Geez! ANOTHER one? Why can't you just get the data from Quantico -- they spent THREE WEEKS poking, prodding, and doing all sorts of unspeakable things to me that I only expected out of little green aliens!" Eventually though he relents and submits himself to a new round of poking, prodding, and all sorts of unspeakable things he only ever expected out of little green aliens.

If he's around when Haven shows up at the Omegas HQ, he'll walk up and introduce himself. "Haven, right? Name's Cassidy. Tom Cassidy. Known in the field as Rampart--d'oh! Sorry, can't use that name anymore. Barricade's the new name." He chuckles and holds out his hand. "Anyway, nice to meet one of the Centurions in person." If the subject of the groups' past histories come up he'll simply shrug. "Before my time here. Heh, along with pretty much everything further back than the past few days, I guess. Either way I call it water under the bridge and you're welcome here so long as you don't drink up all the beer and take the last slice of pizza."

Blackhaunt wrote:"Welcome Alpha. Let's get into it. John Mason's family checked up on him once per week. He was homeless but not without relations. Tom's eyebrows raise as he listens. 15? In just a week? He reaches for his folder and frowns as he reads through what little information is there. No pattern with gender, ethicity, body type, age, nothing. At first blush it's almost totally random aside from the cutting.

He clears his throat. "Agent Steele. Is there _any_ additional information on these people? Any witnesses, friends or family interviewed on the scene? Any fingerprints? Any signs of struggle aside from the cuts in the tents? Any blood samples? Any estimates as to the time of disappearance? And can we get a map of the area with the crime scenes laid out? And can we talk to any of the officers who responded to the reports of the disappearances?" I refuse to believe that the CSPD hasn't done at least some rudimentary investigation. Overworked or not, they'd have to be totally incompetent if this was literally all they had.

He glances over at Brute. "Any chance there are some forensics kits here on the premises? Or maybe we can sweet talk CHIMERA or CSPD into letting us borrow one? I used to be fairly good at crime scene investigations."

Matthew looks over the folders, taking in what little information is provided. He picks them up in turn and reads the scant amount of information. If an operation had this little amount of information, then either they would blitz doing more recon or they would reconsider whether to do anything. He takes one look at Brute and figures that second option was definitely not on the table.

"Do we have any information when and where they were taken?" Matthew asks, dropping one of the files back on the table with barely a noise, "Known associates, any witnesses?"

Do we do this simple, a full investigation? Or do we plunge straight in where Angels fear to tread?

"Or do we have any objects owned by any of them, lock of hair, fingernail clippings, dried blood? Anything like that? I have a spell that might be able to find them, but with items like that, it makes it a lot easier to find them."

RETROPOLIS
Date: Monday, April 6th, 2043
Weather: Outside: Cloudy, raining, warm (60 degrees Fahrenheit)
Time: 9:15 am

Maia finds the rain to be quite pleasant. Her vines feel moisturized, her crystal armor shines and it brings strength back to the earth around her.

Brute pours through the file and comes up with the following:

Brute's Skill Results
John Mason: Didn't know him. Must be a newer addition to the camp.
Rita Chamberlain: She was known around camp as "Crazy Rita". She would talk to herself and had a hollow look in her eyes.
Macy Greenwood: Can't recall.
Arthur Compton: Since his last check in with Cousin Theo, it seems as though Arthur had taken over second in command duties. According to Theo, he was as "strong as 10, no 17 men!"
Anayah Reese: She was sweet and strong but mostly, stylish. Even with minimal access to clothing, she somehow always looked cool.
Caroline Schultz: Can't recall.
Autumn Pritchard: She looks very young (16-19) and Brute doesn't recall seeing her around when he was there.
Kenneth Jones: Can't recall.
Richard Glover: He was always fussy about something. It was hard to figure out which drug he was using, but he was definitely having reactions to something. Lots of scratching, sometimes manic, sometimes docile. He was doing something shady with a crime syndicate, but what it was never became clear.
MacGregor Gamble: Can't recall.
Dean Cantrell: Smoker. Refused to put down the acoustic guitar. Unless he was picking up the banjo. A little obnoxious.
Elmer Klein: "Secretly" the Legionnaire known as The Supervisor. He was a Legacy hero that fell on and stayed in hard times trying to live up to his predecessor. After Brute's time at the Oasis, but he has heard through his contacts all about it. The glasses must stay on at all times.
Guy Anthony: He's in his 20s, used to play football and always talks about how he's going to make it out of the current situation.
Joseph Sawyer: Reserved. Only speaks when he needs to. Which is rare. Once gave Brute a sandwich and chased some thugs away from jumping him.
Douglas Montgomery: Army Veteran. Good in a fight. A little prickly.
Common connections: Brute knows that himself and many of the other homeless folks in Brisby Flats could get a warm meal, a shower and maybe even some second hand clothes at St. Clarice's Center for the Lost. He doesn't see a connection in any underworld dealings, despite one of them almost certainly being a criminal.

"I'll jot that down, Mr Jackson. The threshold is set at 15 disappearances per month. Normally, this would trigger if someone wasn't careful in their below board actions, but it's never happened this fast. Ever."

Barricade asks for additional information on the case. "Most of these folks didn't have family besides the case already presented. At least not family that associated with them. Beyond the info I've already given you, none of our interviews have been enlightening at all. But you can feel free to listen to half an hour of Ronnie J talking about his wine bottle collection and his special football if you'd like. No witnesses to any of these disappearances. No one heard anything. Map, sure. Officers, I'll put in a request. You might be stuck with these reports however."

Crucible asks for different information on the case. "Most of these disappearances happened overnight. Reports explain that they woke and found the various parties missing. Between 1 and 3 per night. The problem is that the reports were given days after many of them had been gone for some time. So, the timeline is quite jumbled. But, like Mr. Jackson said, the information they're giving uniformed CSPD officers might be...limited. The where seems to mostly be tents and shacks. For personal effects, you can check out said tents and shacks."

Lance Steele hands you a map of the Oasis with the layout of which missing person stays where.

The nitty-gritty details of the investigation fail to hold Maia’s interest for long. Part of the problem is, she’s unaccustomed to dealing with obstacles using any method other than physical force. Subtle is slow she thinks as she watches the human insects scurry about, with their papers and their pictures and their other little toys. Maia didn’t see any reason not to simply proceed to the location where these humans went missing, and start threatening and smashing people until someone talked. If it was that important to find these weaker herd members, anyway. She still wasn’t sure the city wouldn’t be better off without them. But, she would follow the other Omegas’ lead for now, and that meant waiting while they did the painstaking work of investigation.

The other part of the problem was that while Maia’s telepathy allowed her to understand the meaning behind the others’ words, she had no frame of reference for the vocabulary being used. Human-made systems puzzle her, and that includes fields like forensics. She understands what things like fingerprints and DNA are, but not how they might be used to further the group’s aim. As the discussion grows increasingly technical, Maia finds herself lost. While a lesser being might have grown frustrated at her inability to understand or participate in the discussion, after the fourth attempt at trying to reason out the purpose of all of it to herself Maia mentally throws up her hands and goes outside with a muttered ”OUTSIDE.”. There, she will wait and enjoy the rain. Idly, Maia wonders whether the weather or the dead nature of the city itself would prove a greater hindrance to tracking the missing humans later. She supposed she’d just have to wait and see.

Elmer Klein - The Supervisor? Shit. At least two of these guys have powers. Are they targeting supers?

Clint looks up from the files as Steele answers questions. He closes the files in front of him and stands. "Agent Steele, at least one of these men has criminal connections and at least two are supers. I don't know all of the disappeared but I do know a few. When the op is over I'll submit dossiers on any that are germane to CHIMERA's interests."

He turns to his team. "With the exception of Maia, we're going in civvies-over-omega-suits. Homeless people are jittery around law enforcement so our cover is that we're a charity and some of our regulars are missing. We can maybe say we're affiliated with St. Clarice's... but we run the risk of people knowing we don't work there. If you get asked, say we're a citizen's neighborhood organization and St. Clarice's mentioned to me that some of the regulars haven't shown up. If they ask any more, shrug. Not every person knows every detail, and the less we lie the harder it'll be to detect."

Hopefully, none of them saw me in human form at the press conference.

He continues, "I'd like to get moving ASAP. I'll talk with Maia and see what it... she... brings to the investigation. Soon as I'm done we're moving out."

Clint will head back out to the memorial garden, and stand next to Maia.

"Maia... I apologize for the intrusion, but ... I kinda need to know if you have any abilities that might help us gather information. Like... there are trees in the homeless camp - can you talk to them? Or is there any way for you to... I dunno... overhear what's going on in the camp? When we ask about the missing people there may be talk going on about it that we're not aware of. And also... It'd probably help if you don't walk around in tree form - you came to us... kind of invisible. Can you do that again?"

As he waits for her answer, he adds "And also, as per our agreement - if you find anything we can do to strengthen The Life where we're going, let me know." As they talk, he racks his brain trying to think about businesses or individuals - criminal or legitimate - with interests in the Oasis.

When we ask about the missing people there may be talk going on about it that we're not aware of. And also... It'd probably help if you don't walk around in tree form - you came to us... kind of invisible. Can you do that again?"
Maia pauses for a moment at Brute’s question, wanting to make sure she understands it in its entirety for answering. Time for action at last. It takes a little longer than would be normal for a human, but when she replies she is fairly clear by her standards. Her mental ‘tone’ is all business- crisp, clear, and to the point. ”THIS FORM. CAN SHED. FOLLOW UNSEEN. POSSESS LARGE TREES. SEE BUT NOT BE SEEN. CAN FLY, CAN FOLLOW. BUT CAUTION. ONLY ONE NEW BODY THIS DAY. CANNOT FIGHT IF I MUST SHED AGAIN.”

”KNOW MANY THINGS. OUT THERE” she gestures vaguely but widely, signifying the whole of the wilderness. ”FEW IN HERE” she gestures again, to the city. ”CAN TRACK. CAN INTERPRET. CAN INTERROGATE. KNOW MUCH OF WHAT HUMANS CALL NATURAL SCIENCES. WE KNOW THE LIFE, NOT THE HUMANS’ CONSTRUCTS.”

Brute wrote:As he waits for her answer, he adds "And also, as per our agreement - if you find anything we can do to strengthen The Life where we're going, let me know."
This time, Maia doesn’t hesitate before responding, ”YES…” With that, Maia dissolves into her energy form, allowing the vines and assorted plant life to integrate into the garden. Once the process is complete, she will follow along behind Brute, even if he goes inside.

But, like Mr. Jackson said, the information they're giving uniformed CSPD officers might be...limited. The where seems to mostly be tents and shacks. For personal effects, you can check out said tents and shacks."

Matthew leans forward and takes a copy of the map, noting where the more recent disappearances were camped. He'd seen a few shanty towns when abroad and this looked better than some; No bomb craters for a start. Still, conditions are hardly likely to be great. He brings a few spells immediately to mind that he knows that might help a few people.

"I suggest we start with the most recent disappearances. Their items are more likely to still be present, giving us a better chance of finding something, hopefully more than one, that I can use to focus my spell to make it more effective."

Hopefully, none of them saw me in human form at the press conference.

He continues, "I'd like to get moving ASAP. I'll talk with Maia and see what it... she... brings to the investigation. Soon as I'm done we're moving out."

Matthew points to his sunglasses and sighs. Somebody always says something. Still better you than me to talk to the tree. Last time I even looked at it, it almost went berserk. "Best to keep a low profile then lest people ask awkward questions we want to avoid answering. "

He gets up and heads to his room, where he changes into civilian clothes over his Omega costume. He feeds Silver and fusses the bird before letting her out the window. Stay close and stay safe he urges his familiar before returning downstairs to wait for the others. As Maia appears following Brute, Matthew does the sign from the Prisoner at the spirit. He's managed to convince you to give up the tree. Maybe there is hope for you yet.

Tom's frown only intensifies as Agent Steele responds to his questions. Not that Steele's 'answers' (such as they were) aren't pretty much exactly what he had expected, of course, but mainly because they are. "I understand. Please give the officers my phone number and they can call me if they think of anything." He scribbles his number down on a scrap piece of paper and hands it to Steele. Never know, something might come to light. Plus having cops know how to contact us -- and know that we want to talk with them -- can't hurt. Hopefully, anyway.

As the questions continue, he looks over the Oasis map and tries to make sense of the locations where the missing people were staying. Is there some sort of pattern? Were they all staying close to a central location that could be investigated? Were they all close to something like sewer grates/manholes? Were there fire escapes or other means nearby where an assailant could slip in/out of the area without being spotted? If there's a computer nearby he'll also search for any reports/headlines involving the Oasis and any nearby businesses

Detective Cassidy is on the job...
Crime Scene Investigation -- 1d100 = 86/90%
Research -- 1d100 = 14/85%
Land Navigation -- 1d100 = 55/64% (to recognize nearby landmarks/buildings that could house some sort of trafficking operation)
Streetwise -- 1d100 = 99/49% (to identify any signs of criminal activity going on in the area from his research)

Tom snorts. "All the work I put into accessorizing my monkey suit, and now I gotta de-accessorize? Geez..." he gives Brute an exaggerated eye roll and shrug. He's right though. "Seriously, sounds like you're the local expert. If we don't have a spare forensics kit on hand, let me know and I'll hit up 'Agent Sunshine' here for one -- anything that'll help us identify any clues will be a huge benefit." He glances over at Crucible. "And depending on how much the neighbors have 'inherited' their stuff, you might still be able to do your magical tracking. Is there a limit as to how long it's been out of their immediate possession for the spells to work?" Man, I wish I had my portable lab. That would have been super handy. Wonder if I can talk him into letting me convert one of these spare rooms into a criminology lab?

Once Brute goes off to question Maia, Tom heads to his room and strips down his Omega suit to the bare minimum so it'll fit under his clothing and sorting the items from his harness into various concealed holsters, pockets, and his backpack. If the Omegas have a forensics kit on hand he'll stash it in a duffel -- if not, he'll ask Steele if he can borrow one. Either way, he reports to Brute when he's ready to go.

RETROPOLIS
Date: Monday, April 6th, 2043
Weather: Outside: Cloudy, raining, warm (60 degrees Fahrenheit)
Time: 9:45 am

In the garden, Brute's request for a stealthier approach is well met by Maia. Her vine form sheds from around her and the flora finds its way back to the garden around her. She floats after Brute.

Brute does some quick research and remembering about the area of Brisby Flats that the Oasis is located in, Hannigan.
Brute's rememberings
Crime Syndicates with dealings in Brisby Flats - particularly any that involve turf at or near the Oasis: Hardheads, Flapjacks, Chrome Riders, Angry Birds, Black Light Tribe, Weeds, Dominators, Happy Face Beat Dragons No. 17, Wounded.
Crime syndicates read about in CSPD's database operating in or trying to move in to Brisby Flats at or near the Oasis – The Red Menace, The Triad
who owns the land the Oasis is on? Individual? Corporation? - "Some millionaire that doesn't want the trouble" is what everyone always said.
Have I read any articles about proposed development at or near the Oasis? - Nope.

Barricade does some preliminary work as well, examining pictures and trying to figure out fact from nonsense.
Barricade's findings
Is there some sort of pattern?: The only pattern Barricade can see is the homelessness and the slicing open of tents and shanty walls.
Were they all staying close to a central location that could be investigated? The Oasis is spread out as are the disappearances. No. (Land Navigation used)

Were they all close to something like sewer grates/manholes?: There are many grates and manholes throughout the map you're looking at. Most of them are partially covered by debris as are most things in the camp. (Land Navigation and Crime Scene Investigation used)

Were there fire escapes or other means nearby where an assailant could slip in/out of the area without being spotted?: No close by fire escapes. There are a lot of winding pathways due to this not being set up by a city planner, so they could have lost any pursuers that way. (Land Navigation and Crime Scene Investigation used)
If there's a computer nearby he'll also search for any reports/headlines involving the Oasis and any nearby businesses: Tom gets 100+ results regarding people complaining about homelessness. A few articles from businesses being robbed by masked men but this is Century Station and that's an every day occurrence. (Research used)

The Omegas get their Omega Suits on underneath their civilian clothing and after a quick 20 minutes of preparation and they are loaded into their new hovertruck and on their way to Brisby Flats. Crucible lets Silver out and the falcon circles overhead until the team leaves. Barricade's hunt for a forensics kit turns up a space Omega Field kit left behind in the armory by some Omega or another.

HANNIGAN
Date: Monday, April 6th, 2043
Weather: Outside: Cloudy, raining, warm (60 degrees Fahrenheit)
Time: 10:30 am
Taking to the sky, The Omegas start by following the Midtown Expressway's 8 lane airways in the direction of Route 273 until they can get through all 10 vertical merging zones and into the free flying area above it all. The blinking of the lane buoys a testament to the small miracles Project Daedalus was able to provide Century Station, and how far it has to go to get back there. Cruising at 200 MPH, it is only 10 minutes before their GPS pings for them to start merging back down through the airways toward the ground. Traffic is surprisingly light, allowing them to easily get to the down and out Dreadzone known as Hannigan, 3 blocks away from the site of the Oasis homeless encampment. The Hovertruck sets down, sending a large gust of trash blowing away at both sides. Most of the residents near the hovertruck continue minding their own business as if their lives depended on it. Three thugs are robbing a young kid across the street in an alley.

Two different, slightly older toughs walk up to your hovertruck as you exit.

"Hey, $40 for protection. You park around here? The wrong people will catch up to you sooner or later." The green faced one looks back to his companion and laughs a little as if you were too stupid to pick up the threat.

Matthew scratches his chin as he considers Tom's comment.

"Honestly, there is probably research on the matter. Guess it depends on how personal the item is, how long they had it, how long it has been out of their presence. Several variables really." He looks at the others and shrugs, "basically I guess we'll find out when I do the ritual or rituals."

"Great place to park," Matthew notes, looking through the window at the scene, "love the ambience. Going for a real gritty feel." he stops and screws up his face, "you know, I thought the sarcasm would feel better. It really didn't!" With that, he opens up the side hatch and steps out onto the street.

Matthew looks them both over, scanning them with his see aura ability from his eye hidden behind the shades.

"I'll let you deal with the local valet service and windscreen washers," he calls back inside the vehicle before he walks across the street. He scans each of the three thugs and the kid. Presuming the kid is not actually a major superpower in disguise, he coughs loudly to get their attention, whilst standing nonchalantly at the entrance to the alley.

"Excuse me, but I think you've helped the young man off the floor enough. I believe there is some more community service you could be doing ... somewhere else!" Matthew keeps a polite tone, but with enough authority and edge to make his point known.

Concentrate. Now is not the time for sleep. Maia is fine for most of the drive over, but once they start getting close she begins to lose her hold on physical reality. The Dream calls, every bit as seductive now as it has been for the last 10,000 years. Nothing else- not Century Station, not the Omegas or their fancy duds, not the vehicle, and not the street toughs- can possibly compare. And doesn’t, to Maia’s mind. It takes all of her concentration to resist floating off into it. Not yet. The Life must still be protected. Much work yet to be done.

Maia instinctively casts about for vegetation to inhabit, and anchor her to this realm. Then she resists. Not yet. More action required later. Somehow, through sheer force of will, she holds on and anchors herself to the rest of the team. Uncomprehending and uncaring of the street toughs’ purpose, and only minimally aware of them to begin with, she speaks irritably. ”SEEK. INSECTS. WHERE?”

Tom doesn't know what's annoying him more -- the fact that Steele gave him so little information or the fact that there wasn't much information to begin with. Ultimately he decides on the latter. I'm sure I'll have many more reasons to be annoyed by him in the future anyway, he grumbles to himself.

On the way, he relays his findings to Brute and the others. "There's not a lot as I can figure. The only patterns are that all the victims are homeless and their tents and shanty walls have been sliced open, so we're looking most likely at someone using a large blade or possibly claws of some sort. There aren't any obvious ways in or out of the area outside of some winding pathways -- most of the grates and manhole covers are covered over and there aren't any fire escapes directly in the area, so that tells me either they're sneaking in through those paths or more likely flying or possibly even teleporting. Hopefully we can get to talk to some of the locals who may have seen or heard someone doing either one."

Blackhaunt wrote:"Hey, $40 for protection. You park around here? The wrong people will catch up to you sooner or later." The green faced one looks back to his companion and laughs a little as if you were too stupid to pick up the threat.

Tom almost chuckles as the two thugs attempt a shakedown. Only 40 bucks? I would have thought the going rate would be much higher. Maybe we're dealing with S-Mart level thugs here. He looks the green-faced one right in the eye. "Protection? What a great idea..." He snaps his fingers, and a semi-transparent full-grown male grizzly bear materializes into view.

The Bear Necessities
Creating a Force Construct full-size Northern Grizzly bear, using the entry on p.215 of the PFRPG Monsters and Animals book as a reference.
Using 300 force field SDC to create it, so that would be its hit points.
Duration: 45 minutes or until destroyed.

He gives the construct bear a scratch behind the ears. "Now Bruno, you be a good boy and guard the truck okay? And if 'the wrong people' should try and get too close, just rip their arms out. Y'know, the usual." Giving the two thugs a quick glance as he turns to Brute he adds. "Hey boss, think we could spare a few bucks for some information instead?"

Clint nods. "Good job. I'm sure whatever connection there is won't be an obvious one. Whoever did this is smart enough to only take people they think won't be missed, so they're smart enough to cover their tracks as well."

As they park, Clint looks at the thugs robbing someone across the street and instinctively look for the thugs gang affiliation markers (tats, patches, style of dress, etc.)

Before he can react, however, the two other colorpunks, one wearing an obvious black light tribe patch, come and ask for protection money. Of course. Note to self: next time, find a good strong roof to park on. We've got a damn hovertruck. Street parking is for chumps.

Crucible exits the hovertruck first and as such, is the first to deal with the thugs. Or not deal, as he has chosen. He insults the two which causes their faces to bristle in anger as he crosses the street to deal with the daylight robbery. Brute is up next. He doesn't recognize who's across the street, but in front of him he has the Black Light Tribe. Small time crew that has a glow stick theme. Dayglow green baseball bats, neon tattoos, leaving glow sticks at the scenes of their crimes. Unfortunately, their signal isn't a hand motion, but rather the keeping of a glow stick on one's person at all times. But Barricade comes through and creates a large grizzly bear out of thin air. He tasks it with watching the vehicle and watches as the two toughs wilt. Brute's comment drives the point home. They respond with a dejected "A...aight. You good." They walk away at a brisk pace.

Across the street, Crucible approaches 3 young men trying to take the possessions of another young man. They have him against a wall and look prepared to injure him bodily.
Crucible wrote:"Excuse me, but I think you've helped the young man off the floor enough. I believe there is some more community service you could be doing ... somewhere else!"

The kid in the hat turns and starts coming after Matthew. "Hey bitch, you should probably mind your own fucking business if you know what's good for you, yeah?" He pulls a knife from his pocket which he seems to have clumsily dropped. The bald kid reaches in his vest for a knife which he also seems to drop. They both look confused. The blonde kid continues holding the kid in the red shirt against the wall but turns to the other two and says, as if he's annoyed about having to say something so obvious, "Get him!" They both run at you.

Maia has a hard time holding on to physical reality and thinks about creating a physical body for herself. However, the humans have paved over almost all of The Life around her and all that's available to her at the moment are weeds growing through the cracks of the sidewalk. It's not nothing, but it's not enough to really work with. She can see a decrepit mini-park across the street that has some greenery in it. It's not lush, but she might feel more comfortable hovering there.

It doesn’t really register on Maia when the toughs leave. Nothing about that world really seems to matter anymore, only that the tidal flood of The Life has dwindled to a trickle. It leaves her with nothing to grasp, and threatens to drown her in her own being. Ignoring whatever Brute points to, ignoring Crucible or any danger he’s in, she clutches desperately at any threads of The Life she can find. As ignored by the humans as they themselves are by her, Maia grabs for the best she can do and floats over towards the park. There she waits- she’s not sure what, enough of The Life to craft a body, or a suitable host she can indwell for the day. Meanwhile, the line between her thoughts and her words continues to blur. Keep. Focusing. Where is The Life? ”KEEP. FOCUSING. WHERE LIFE? FORGET.” Wandering crazily between internal monologue and muttering to herself, Maia searches the park and continues to keep to herself.

Crucible will hit one of the thugs in the leg as they run to try and cause them to fall over; the more these two appear to humiliate themselves, the more likely the boss is to let the kid go and come after me in order to assert control on the situation. Better pull my punches though. A couple of blows from me would probably kill these muppets and no need to kill a couple of kids.

If anybody pulls a weapon, Crucible will use telekinesis to cause it go flying as he did the knives, especially if a firearm is pulled
If the two thugs go down very quickly, Matthew will close on the leader
If either of the thugs looks like another punch would kill them, Matthew will let them run away or if they try to continue to attack either grab them or pull his punch as to knock them around a little bit more to convince them to run or surrender.

Perception: 51% 1d100 = 1 (CRIT. SUCCESS)

JIC: 1d20 = 9
1d100 = 45

Conditions: Human form

Clint turns and watches Crucible confronting the toughs, and is reminded of when they mounted a rescue mission for Captain Neutron. Coming out of the church with his comatose body and their two dead friends, they made their way back to their vehicle only to find vandals tagging it. He'd gone off, getting angry, and nearly killed them. And it turned out they were rich kids slumming it, and he caught hell back at HQ.

Still, he sees Crucible's confidence, and reasons that if the toughs show any active powers he can jump in, but for now, he figures Crucible has it in hand.

He's trained by the British military. Surely he can handle a few teenagers.

He turns to Barricade. "Let's hang out here a sec and wait for our friend to mop up over there. Then we'll head into the Oasis."

If at any point Crucible appears to need assistance (i.e., the thugs have him on the ropes or he calls for help), Clint will maintain his cover by staying in human form and not using any of his highly-recognizeable powers. Instead, he will draw his collapsible nightstick and step in. Otherwise, he will stand back and watch the soldier work.

If at any point the punks look on the verge of death, Clint will go full defense, not attacking but not allowing them to attack others.

If Crucible handles the thugs easily, Clint will stand by and wait until they are gone, then lead the group into the Oasis.

Crucible telekinetically trips hat thug, causing the kid to land on his face because his shoe moved where his foot didn't tell it to. Bald thug closes in with Crucible. Blonde thug looks at hat thug with disappointment and anger.
Crucible punches bald thug, hearing a sick crunch from his left side where he hit him like the kid had never been hit before. Bald thug falls to the ground holding his side and screaming. Hat thug gets back up and charges at Crucible. Blonde thug looks a little surprised at Crucible's deftness, and lets go of the kid in the red shirt and runs toward Crucible.
Crucible, having seen the effect of one punch on the kids, pulls his punches with bald thug. He socks him with a lighter, more humanesque punch. Bald thug swings at Crucible, but the military trained combatant easily parries the blow. Blonde thug has now closed in with Crucible.
Crucible takes another swing at bald thug, not satisfied with the results of his last hit. This one sends the kid flying. He won't be getting back up anytime soon. Leaving just blonde thug. The young kid runs to strike Crucible. Just as he's about to strike, a shot rings out and he falls to the ground. Behind him, red shirt kid stands with a smoking gun across from Crucible.

In the park across the street, Maia flitters about, looking for something to connect with. Not to inhabit, just to exist near. To remind her of who she is and why she is here. She lucks out. In the back of the mini-park, behind the tire toy and broken swing set is what seems to be a well taken care of community garden. Fenced off and under lock and key, it seems as though the rundown surroundings cannot or are not allowed to pollute the garden. Maia notices some hearty Bougainvillea vines as well as a arched trellis covered in Actinidia arguta that have borne fruit.

What are you doing?

Perception: 1d100 = 54/63%
JIC: 1d20 = 1/1d100 = 24

Conditions:
- Force Field S.D.C. 3,100/3,400
- Bruno the Force Construct Northern Grizzly Bear: 64.5 minutes (258 melees) remaining (Sorry, was looking at the wrong power while doing my last post)
Bruno Stats
Size: 9' (2.7m)

Hit Points: 300
Attacks per Melee: 3

Natural Abilities: Nightvision 60' (18.3m); prowl 30%; track by smell 68%, swim 70%, climb trees 30%
Speed: 22 (15 mph/24 km), but maximum speed is 44 (30 mph/48 km), which can be maintained for 2d4 minutes.

Tom smirks to himself as the two toughs lose their bravado at the sight of his force construct watchbear. Guess the sight of Bruno was more than they could... bear. There, I went there... but at least I didn't say it out loud. This time.

Brute wrote:"Let's hang out here a sec and wait for our friend to mop up over there. Then we'll head into the Oasis."

"Let him have his fun. Check..." Tom grins. "Got any popcorn?" He raises an eyebrow as the mage wipes the proverbial floor (in this case the sidewalk) with the thugs. This guy could definitely give Zoe some pointers on how to mix it up in a brawl. Unfortunately the unmistakable sound of a handgun focuses his thoughts back to the here and now. "Mother puss bucket..." he says under his breath when he sees the source. "How you want to play this, boss?" he asks Brute without even looking in his direction.

Assuming Brute doesn't specifically order him to stand down, he'll rush over to the shot thug and start administering first aid as much as he can -- which he knows isn't a lot, all things considered. Thug or not, he doesn't deserve to snuff it out here on the street. "You don't happen to have any healing tricks in your spellbook, do ya chum?" He asks softly in Crucible's general direction.

Dammit, will have to heal that one. Pull the punches for the others. As the other one goes flying, he turns his attention to the remaining thug running at him. now for the hatrick

Matthew knew his first priority was to remove the threat. Did the kid think he was defending him or was this situation more complex than that? Sort that out later.

"Drop it!" he barks the order giving him a couple of seconds to comply before yanking the weapon from his hand using telekinesis. "Now stay there!"
