C.S.P.D. Incident Report: October 12, 2040 wrote:Received several calls regarding an unknown, damaging energy signature in Center City. Upon investigation, it appeared that the energy eruption originated in a laboratory facility at Hamzadi Industries, and extended in a straight line, due northwest, into Society Hill. The Hamzadi facility was largely destroyed, and the energy cut holes through buildings and any other intervening material - including people. Property damage has not yet been calculated, but there are at least 8 dead individuals. We were unable to calculate casualties at the lab facility where the signature originated.

Hamzadi Industries has not shared with us the cause of the eruption, citing a top-secret clearance on the project with the Department of Defense, and we have been stymied in our contacts with the federal government.

"Ephraim... don't be mad."

The man smiled at his wife. "What? Have I got something to be mad about?"

She smiled nervously. She looked human in the dim light, as Ephraim laid down his pack and travelling cloak. He'd just returned from market, selling vegetables from their meager garden, and he was covered with the dust from the road. In the dim light, he could only just see the purple tint of her hair, marking her as a D-Bee. But Ephraim had never cared about that.

"While you were at market.... I... went riding. Looking for wild berries, fruit, and whatever. I brought the rifle, in case I came across any deer... I was going to make you a stew." Ephraim nodded.

She continued, "I ranged a bit farther than usual. Several miles into the woods, the trees were burnt. But... the ground had, uh... rubble. It wasn't there before. And further in... there were people. Uhh... dead people. Torn apart." Erdanya tried and failed to suppress a shudder. Despite living on the fringes of civilization, she still possessed a childlike squeamishness. Ephraim looked at her sternly.

"What... happened? What did you do next?"

Erdanya looked sheepish. "A... about halfway through the burn... I heard a..."

At that moment, a child cried out softly. Ephraim's eyes widened.

Erdanya looked at him imploringly. "You always said you wanted a child, Ephraim... and her people are gone..."

I don't know where I'm from. My parents - I dunno what else to call 'em - told me I fell through a rift. I was too young to remember. They found me as a small kid, and took me in. I grew up in a settlement near Lone Star. They farmed, hunted, and fished. My dad was Ephraim and my mom was Erdanya - she was a D-Bee, looked nearly human. We were poor, but we were isolated, so neither D-Bees nor C.S. hassled us much. At least... not at first. I don't remember much of what happened. I remember the rumbling. My mom put me in a hollow under the floor, told me to stay quiet, and stay safe. It was cold and packed with dirt. I heard screams, smelled smoke. I trembled with fear, and I could barely breathe, but I stayed hid.

After the screams stopped, I crawled out. The town was burnt. Everyone was gone. I searched for food - there was precious little left. I was alone, cold, dirty, and hungry. That's when Pangur Bán found me. Pangur was a Kill-Cat, on the run from the C.S. He'd started a merc group called "Myrmidon's Might" - it was him, T'avi the M'raghiile, Ishmael the Monkey Boy, and a human operator named Hagbard. They were my family for years. They cared for me, and kept me fed, and safe. I'd have done anything for them - and I didn't want to lose them the way I'd lost my birth family, by hiding like a coward while they were slaughtered - so I begged them to teach me anything they could, so I could be one of them, help them.

Pangur was a killer. He taught me the basics of how to fight, and he taught me to respect death. T'avi was a mystic, and he taught me Gobbley and Elven. When my powers awakened, it was T'avi who taught me how to focus and control them, so they don't control me. Ishmael taught me to read. He taught me history, first aid, and how to size someone up. Hagbard taught me to drive, how to work on a car, and fix simple stuff. He was gonna teach me more... but ...

After about 5 years on the road with them, they started letting me go on jobs with them. But, about a year ago, we were on a delve into some old facility and there was a boom, and a collapse, and I got separated from them. I heard gunfire. I started frantically digging my way out, the concrete and steel tearing at my flesh. I needed to get out, to be with my family. But by the time I got clear of the debris, there was no one left. I had lost my family... again. I was alone. Again. I gathered what was left of my gear.

Pangur had always told me if I ended up on my own, hook up with another merc crew - they can be like a family when you need one, and keep each other alive. So I headed to the place I heard was best for that kind of thing. Merc Town. maybe I can find another family there. Maybe... one I can keep.
