Swordsmen Agency

Image

The Swordsmen Agency provides security both within and outside Llorn. With extensive contacts with the military, the Agency is the first place merchants go to hire caravan guards. It is also a good place for adventurers to find work accompanying expeditions into the Disputed Lands, Shattered Mountains and the Old Kingdom. Essentially an employment service, the Swordsmen Agency receives a 15% commission payable by the employer when one of its clients is hired.

Description:
The open doors at the front of the structure begin to reveal the interior as one marches up the steps of the Swordsman Agency. As one reaches the top of the steps and enters the ground floor, it's quickly apparent that the main floor is organized for efficiency. The whole main floor is wide open in its architectural design with smooth stone pillars on a smooth stone floor supporting the structure above. The space is split in twain by a wide, open walkway through the middle which leads to a large staircase at the far end. This staircase is clearly not open to the public as a quartet of armored guards with pole arms stand in clear deterrence to wanderers. At the far end of the left side of the space is a arrangement much like a bar one would see at a tavern, only the men staffing it are not serving refreshments. Quills in hand and well-dressed, the men staffing this bar are conducting business--namely, contracting individuals and groups to do various work for third parties as well as for Llorn itself. On the right hand side of the space, is a similar arrangement, with one notable exception: there are many guards present. It takes only a moment to see why: this is where the people from the left side of the room come to get paid for their work--and establish the veracity of their claims to payment. About twenty feet back from the "bars" on either side are open waiting areas, unfurnished and filled with individuals and small groups waiting to do business.

Trask grumbles as he walks up to the building, the last three months of hard labor playing hell with his joints, and making him generally cranky. Thrask walks up to the building, having been there several times in the past half century. Hopefully whomever is setting the contracts aren't upity. Trask thinks as he opens the door and enters the building.

Trask looks for someone who seems to work there. "Whom do I speak to for the Orc contract?"

Fox glances at Trask as they walk, then comments, "You know, I could help you some. I do not think I could fully restore the eye, but I could make the scar less noticeable. I might do something about the joint aches too, but I fear that would mainly be palliative, aging I can NOT cure."

He wonders why Trask has not had the scar worked on already, but then he recalls how expensive healing can be, possibly it would have been hard to afford.

"Not interested." Trask says with a huff. Not even taking the time to look at Fox to reply. Trask is looking around the room they are standing in though, hoping someone is coming to help them.

Enter from The Lycinean Pier

Jakkin snorts beneath Fox's elbow.

"He earned those scars, youngling," he explains dryly. "They're part of the story of who he is, and how he got here. You wouldn't want to erase part of yourself, would you?" the Gnome asks pointedly. The scars aren't disfiguring, they're character. A shame that it's so seldom one outside the Brigade seems to get that.

Not to mention the strong implication that the man is old and falling apart. It isn't nice to just point out the truth like that without even an attempt to sweeten it.

While Old Man Trask tries to get the attention of someone official, Jakkin skims over any posted bounties in his still-rudimentary Eastern, seeing if there's anything that might stir the blood of his raging little ocean if the bigger contracts don't pan out.

An unspecified time ago... The Lycinean Pier

The Wolfen Undead Hunter almost literally bursts though the doors of the Swordsmen Agency. "Really?!" she exclaims in Eastern (Language: Human: Eastern ]40%] 1d100 = 67) as she throws the hood of her old cloak back and allows the length to fall open, revealing the strange attire underneath. Still in her silk pants and tunic with her bandoleer around her torso, she now had a belt with her Flamberge hanging from it. "You couldn't have waited a couple of minutes for me?" she says to no one directly.

Looking around and taking a few sniffs of the place, she finally adds, "Where is everyone else?" and then shouts, "HEY! ANYONE IN HERE?!"

Fox replies to Longshanks, "Different people have different standards, as you interaction with Sil should tell you. You did what seemed correct by your standards, but by hers it was something upsetting. I am unable to know what Trask would like unless I inquire, and so I do. My Eastern is not very good, so speak plainly. It is that simple."

The Kankoran flicks one ear back in the canine equivalent of a shrug.

Fox would have patiently waited, but Tatyana bursts in and starts calling for attention. Well, that may work...

Jakkin grunts at Fox’s explanation. Can’t argue with that; Eastern is an unsatisfying, prissy language that you need to be raised speaking to get all of the ridiculous nuances.

”That’s why I explained it to you, boy,” he points out reasonably, glancing back from the bounty boards for a moment. ”If a fighting man hasn’t looked for help with his scars, he’s likely proud of them, or they’re a reminder.”

The boy certainly had seemed to taken offense at the clarification; Jakkin isn’t sure why, however. That had been a polite information exchange; if he had been irritated, that would have been abundantly clear.

Conditions:
Date: 5 May, 345
Time: 1130
Environment: Mixed light rain, smoke, and sunshine outside
Location: The Swordsmen Agency

The open doors at the front of the structure begin to reveal the interior as one marches up the steps of the Swordsman Agency. As one reaches the top of the steps and enters the ground floor, it's quickly apparent that the main floor is organized for efficiency. The whole main floor is wide open in its architectural design with smooth stone pillars on a smooth stone floor supporting the structure above. The space is split in twain by a wide, open walkway through the middle which leads to a large staircase at the far end. At present, there are far more many people on the left side of the room than on the right. It appears that the Lycinean pier might have been far down the list on the crier's places to make his announcements. About twenty feet back from the "bars" on either side are open waiting areas, unfurnished and filled with individuals and small groups waiting to do business.

After an hour's wait while those who arrived earlier are dealt with, the group composed of Jakkin, Fox, Tatyana, and Tolliver are beckoned to speak with a fellow behind the "bar."

He's businesslike, disinterested, and direct...and each of you have heard all of this spiel at least a dozen times already while waiting your turn. "I assume by your demeanor that you're a group?" He writes down their responses. "Name, race, and place of origin of each interested party?" He records their responses and writes on his new sheet of parchment for a few moments more after they've given their responses. "Llorn is currently financing three active bounties announced across the city today. The first is a bounty for every right ear of an Orc brought in. The second is to scout for Orcs and escort refugees back to the city for a period of one week. The third is sub-financed by the Red Brigade finding and eliminating the root of the orc menace that currently plagues the city. In which bounties are you interested in contracting? Mind you, none of what I write is binding upon you until you have made your marks." He cleans the end of his quill and takes a puff from a pipe he has sitting to one side on the counter before refreshing the quill, and poising his hand above the parchment once again. "Payment stipulated as follows: number one: one hundred gold per orc ear from hostile tribes--and that's most in the region; number two: one thousand gold for a week's demonstrated service as stipulated--notify the guards at the gates when escorting refugees to safety, they'll pass word; number three: one hundred thousand gold for ending the orc threat and the source of that threat--this is a single sum, not per member of a group. I await your answer."

Fox identifies himself as being called Fox, being a Kankoran, and being from between two rivers near the shore of a great northern bay as well as giving what other tribes call his. It is rather hard to be more specific with a nomadic group.

He states, "Detail clarification. Should we take either of the other quests, we could still redeem Orc Ears?" Not that we will necessarily go out of our way to kill Orcs, but it seems likely we will wind up doing so. It should not matter to the dead if their ears are removed, and it is a reasonably convenient way to prove that each Orc claimed was actually dealt with, as it is unlikely any Orc will Willingly give up an ear.

However, there is a possibility that the groups sponsoring the various bounties could have objections to multiple claims. This is why Fox wants to be certain.

Trask looks at the fellow. "Tolliver Trask, Human, Llorn, and yes we're a party." Trask says happy that the paper pusher wasn't one of the verbose kind. One hundred gold per ear, one thousand per week, and one hundred thousand to end the threat. Not quite a kings ransom, but a sizeable sum. Though divided among nearly ten folk is gonna make it a lot less. Basically it's a pittance, but it's paying work, and it's not being forced on us. Trask mulls over in his mind for a long silent pause.

Turning to look at the others. "Ears is a definite, would be stupid to not do that. Ending the threat is going make us the most money, a pittance to what the Archon was paying, but it's work. I'm not really looking to play escort, but if you all want to, I will do so." Trask says to the others, hoping for a consensus can be come to.

Jakkin isn't thrilled with the amount of time they must spend cooling their heels, but he's been a soldier for long enough to know that's just the way of things much of the time.

He's equally unhappy about the somewhat intrusive and questionably relevant inquiries made by the clerk.

"Jakkin Longshanks, Gnome, most recently of Llorn but originally of the Old Kingdom Mountains," he replies tersely. He doesn't much like thinking about his old home or the clan that had been forced to abandon it; they had ultimately bent to the world's will, rather than bending it to theirs. We'd already lost so much; how could you all have just given away what we had left?

"Ears and ringleaders, definitely," he agrees, silently daring the clerk to look down on him just because he was literally doing so. "Can't say as I'm in much of a mood for escort duty either." He'd broken ties with the Brigade as much as he had in order to get a more active role in the world; riding herd on a gaggle of peasants wasn't what he'd had in mind.

He only offers his opinion, however. He's been listening to officers for long enough now that he still hasn't quite broken back into the habit of doing all of his own thinking.

Per (48%): 1d100 = 8
JiC: 1d20 = 16 / 1d100 = 10

Hustling his way through the market place to the Swordsmen Agency, Thorgrim clanks along, now kitted in scale mail. He offers shouted apologies given over his shoulder to those he accidentally bumps into, although most are likely smart enough to make way for the massive armored warrior as he tromps forward. Damnit! I hope I’m not too late...

Once inside the Agency building, Thor quickly notices -aside from the multitude of guards- the large number of patrons conducting contract business. Shoot! It seems, like we’re not the first to have heard of these new postings from that Crier. Hopefully there’s plenty of contracts left and gold to spare. I bet Trask, Jakkin or Tat may have already settled into negotiations... I’d wager Red Brigade vets are valued more than most... and who could miss a 9+ ft Wolfen walking around the room, Ha!

Thor asks any employee or guard closest to him and asks, ”Excuse me, but I’m joining a party which likely already entered before me to begin the arrangement of our employment with your Agency. They had a Wolfen, Kankoran, and Gnome amongst them...?”

If he’s able to link up with the group amidst their conversation with the Clerk, Thor will offer, ”My apologies Sir, for my tardiness. Thorgrim, human, of the Bruu-Ga-Belimar Mountains.” Nodding his head to the clerk to be polite, he continues before discussing business... “I’m game to offer contract service to all three opportunities. Scouting for Orcs and escorting back refugees is as a good chance for gold as any, methinks. Although I believe this not to be a popular option for most... If we were to offer our services to this, is there a chance we might be able to sweeten the deal?”

Tatyana fig-its most of the time she's 'cooling her heels' waiting to be seen by the Agency. She watches others people (Intelligence ]57%] 1d100 = 64) come and go, plays with a few of the 12 sisters in their beds across her chest, she tries to run her fingers though her fur to get a few knots out, she sniffs the air occasionally to see if there's anything or anyone she recognises, she tries to listen in on others conversations, she ignores the stares of some and returns the glares of others.

When the clerk addresses them, she practically vaults out of her spot and with the others, listens quietly as she stares down at the man, doing her best to understand what he's says. When he asks for their information, she briefly considers being a smart ass, but decides he doesn't have a sense of humor and answers, "Tatyana Singh, Wolfen" she announces proudly and continues with slightly less enthusiasm, "the southern area of the Western Empire." she almost spits on the floor after saying it.

To Trask she says, "Well, I say we go for bounty number three. Find these Orcs, jump into the middle of them, knock a few heads in, kill the leader and bob's your uncle. Plus we can collect a few ears while we are doing it too. One hundred thousand gold split nine ways is...well, it's still a lot."

Thor comes bursting through the door in a clatter of weapons and armour, and Jakkin doesn’t even bother to refrain from rolling his eyes. So that’s where the scholar ran off to – as if we’re going to be thrust into deadly peril the moment we accept a contract.

If he hadn't sparred with the big man a few times and made assessment of his combat skills, he’d be inclined to dismiss the man out of hand.

As it is, he’s not willing to count on him outside of those combat skills as of yet.

”…glad you could make it,” he says dryly.

If he hadn't sparred with the big man a few times and made assessment of his combat skills, he’d be inclined to dismiss the man out of hand.

As it is, he’s not willing to count on him outside of those combat skills as of yet.

”…glad you could make it,” he says dryly.

Thorgrim ponders Cheeky sonofabitch! I at least took the time to ‘dress for the job I want’. I hope his physical jabs are better than his verbal ones, or this one isn’t worth much in a fight, as he replies, ”Glad to hear that, Jakkin. After all I wouldn’t want to show up SHORT on such a BIG undertaking, no matter how SMALL some of our views may be on some of the contracts.”

...After hearing the thoughts of both Tatyana and Fox, Thor weighs in, ”I’m surprised to hear such reluctance to take on escort and scouting work from you two such ‘Champions of Good’, especially a healer, I would think you would want to help these people? ...Or perhaps you’re a closet-blood-thirsty-healer just waiting for his chance to slay Orcs?” Thorgrim smiles briefly for his canine companions and shrugs Well I had to say something.
Thorgrim tries to rest his case, ”I believe all three contracts are mutually supporting, and is there even a penalty for not fully completing one?” The barbarian warrior crosses his arms and looks to Trask, Jakkin, Fox, and Tat before continuing. ”I think we can all at least agree that stopping the Orc menace, the root cause of all this, is of the most importance. All I’m saying is that there’s no harm in making gold simultaneously with the other two contracts as well.”

Thorgrim looks from Trask to the Clerk, ”Am I crazy, or can we sign on for all three? And if we end up stopping the so called Orc menace, it pretty much mutually accomplishes the other 2 contracts, correct?”

Fox points out to Thorgrim, "I said nothing about which mission to take, I simply noted one might have trouble with going afield to look for the root cause if one is currently acting as an escort. An Escort is expected to stay near those they are protecting."

It was a time allocation question, not one of what to do. At least, that was how Fox intended it. He is not that good in Eastern, possibly he messed it up?

He adds, "Solving the root problem is generally better than treating the symptoms. Still, we need information. The escort missions are paid by the group brought back. If we do one or two of those to learn more about the tactics and resources of the Orcs, possibly find a way to capture and question. If someone has a truth spell so we get honest answers..."

Thorgrim thanks the Clerk for the clear answer, before carefully listening to Fox’s addition. The barbarian slowly unfolds his arms and claps his hands as he listens to the Kankoran’s reasoning, ”Exactly, Fox! I think you’ve got my perspective on this. Well done.”

Jakkin doesn't react to the jibes about his height other than with a tight smile; he's long since accepted that such things are only his due, as he routinely used to do the exact same thing to his shorter kin when he was the tall one.

"I'm sure there will be many to take on the escort duties," Jakkin observes. That's the safe, soft route, that gets paid with potentially no fighting at all. "As long as there's no penalties for not escorting a certain minimum number, no harm in taking that one too – might just run into people when we're coming back anyhow," he points out. "I say sign 'em all."

He does, however, regard the agent to see if there actually is some such clause.

"Wait a minute there Big McLargehuge, I never said I was reluctant to take the escorting job." the Wolfen says with a mock hurt expression, "I just don't see how we can both escort and search at the same time...unless you mean take up the scouting and use it to gather information on the Orcs and then go back for them once we deliver the refuges to Llorn?" Tatyana ponders that a moment the continues, "I was planning on interviewing some of the refugees and the escorts to gather information on the Orc attacks, numbers, whereabouts, etc. before we set out anyway."

Tatyana regards Jakken for a minute, she can sympathize with the gnome, "He gets the short jokes and I get the tall ones." She then looks back to Trask, "Well, oh wish and worldly one. It looks like we've narrowed it down to all of them. What say you."

Jakkin smacks one small but callused hand against the desktop.

"I say done, then," he agrees. "Sign for all three, and collect where we may." For all we know, we'll go looking for Orcs and find nothing but refugees; we'd feel pretty stupid having turned down the escort contract.

It could be, of course, that he's simply impatient for action, it having been a good long while since he has been out on an active campaign. Either way, he's more than ready to get on the trail again and actually employ his best skills in earnest, He flashes the attractive Wolfen bitch his charming smile; she feels the same way, he's sure.

Happy to see his peers starting to come around to taking on all three contracts, -or at least they’re not going to turn away a chance at filling their pockets with more gold- Thorgrim dusts off his hands and innocently shrugs as he looks up at the towering Wolfen.
”What can I say? It just makes sense to get paid for all three.” He then turns his attention to the Clerk, ”I’ll take part of all three contracts. Where do I make my mark?”

Tatyana let's out an auditable sigh and turns back to the clerk, "Well, in for a silver, in for a gold." She takes the ink quill and signs her name in a flowing, delicate elven script, but pauses for a moment before signing the escort contract. "This is going to waste time, but I can't do this one alone either." she thinks to herself as she steps out of the way.

Looking at the group, her mission mind starts to kick in, her ears raise and she says, "Alright,I suggest we spend the rest of the day getting our gear..." She glances at Thorgrim, "...well, the rest of us getting our gear and meet back at the docks tonight. Gather what information you can and any last minute purchases." The Wolfen turns back to the clerk, "Where, when and how do we find out about the group we need to escort?"

Jakkin is next to sign, vaulting onto the clerk's desk entirely to put down his marks in Dwarven. He could have used the Eastern characters instead, but it hasn't been all that long since he finally gained some proficiency in their written language, and all too often 'small' and 'clumsily formed' says 'children's writing'.

Not bloody likely. Juggernaut smash me before I encourage people to treat me like a child.

"Done and done," he agrees, jumping agilely back to the floor and dusting himself off. "I'll grab my kit and haul my ass down to the docks this evening," he nods to Tatyana, and one again employing the entertaining pun that Eastern lends itself to -- at least Stew is finally good for something other than to practice profanity upon.

"I'm thinking the contract is to escort any refugees we happen to encounter while out and about, rather than any particular ones, m'dear," he corrects her gently. Their blasted tongue can be difficult enough to understand as it is; and she just learned it! No harm done....

The agent does as requested and prepares a document in duplicate which contracts them for each of the three bounties. He has each of the group present make their mark on each document, keeps one for the Agency's records, and hands the other over to the party.

Signatories:
  • Jakkin Longshanks
  • Tatyana Singh
  • Thorgrim
  • Tolliver Trask
  • Fox
Bounties:
  • Orc bounty
  • Refugee escort
  • End source of orc threat

"Well, that's that, then." The contract signed, there's little reason to remain at the Agency, and several not to; they will not be the only ones signing these contracts today, and while there are likely plenty of Orcish ears and refugees to go around, there is only one motive force behind these attacks, and only one group will be able to collect the bounty on ending it.

Jakkin smiles to himself. A little competition can be a healthy motivator.

He's already thinking about what gear he'll need to pack; he hasn't acquired much that's new over the past few months, so it'll be most everything he owns at this point. Will definitely have to pack away his heavy armour for now; while just the thing to stay alive in the midst of battle, it's a stone bitch to get in and out of and not the most comfortable thing for long-term travel, especially afoot. He'll have to stick with his lighter armour until they're closer to the Orcish territory.

Fox signs in Wolfen, with his name printed in Eastern beside it. He looks at the others, "The question would seem to be if there is a schedule for the ones we are escorting, or if we are just to go out along the trade routes until we meet someone coming in? I had the impression that current trade is sporadic."

Language: Eastern 1d100 = 51 of 65%

Hopefully that came out right, some of the words he was using were a bit tough.

In general, he dislikes attacking intelligent creatures, but bandits raiding trade he can see as a parasite that needs to be removed for the health of the host.

While he does not expect that he needs much, Fox will head along to the marketplace and see if he could be mistaken about that. (Exits)

"I think we just scoop up whatever refugees we run into while we're searching for the leadership," Jakkin explains again. It's not like people flee for their lives on a schedule, after all.

He falls in with Fox as his furry companion departs; while he generally has what he needs for equipment, he'll have to grab some food supplies if they're going to be out in the field. No way am I counting on someone's ability to hunt in order to make sure I eat; fortunately, Idiot Mule's saddlebags are more than big enough to hold what I'll need.

Thorgrim rests with hands on his hips, and nods in a final agreeable gesture to the finished contract. Best to be on our way then, methinks. ”Aye, I’ll see you all shortly at the South Gate. Just need to snag up Bill from the Lycinean stables and, poof, I’ll be there in a jiff.”

The barbarian saunters off to pick up his work horse and a few more things, before walking out off to the gates.

Tatyana nods her furry head, "That works too." she replies. Well, that's better and less limiting then meeting them somewhere and escorting them back here. she thinks to herself. The towering Wolfen female stands there waiting for someone to reply and just watches in silence as the others talk and leave. Tatyana eventually shakes her head and throws up her hands, letting them slap her thighs when the fall to her side, "Maybe I'm just to tall for them and they just didn't hear a word I said." She strides out of the agency and onto the streets.
