This is where the 1st S.O.G. receives briefings on new missions, and cools their heels when on ALERT STANDBY duty. Adjoining the ready room is the office for the 1st SOG's commanding officer.

Day 46, 0700

LCDR Nibiru Akeno, Commanding Officer, Special Operations Command stands besides the control table and to one side of the projection screen which displays the data he manipulates on the table. The screen remains unlit. As the 1st SOG files in, he greets them. "Everyone, grab a cup of caff and enjoy it...it's the last authentic Arismal caff in existence." He lets that sink in for a moment. "When you've grabbed a cup, take a seat. I'll be ready in a minute." He actually lets a couple minutes pass so people can grab cups, exchange some brief remarks between themselves, and grab seats.

When everyone's seated, he begins. The screen remains unlit. "The fleet is in desperate need of supplies as the switch to synthetic--and terrible tasting--caff illustrates." The screen finally comes to life. "Work crews and equipment have been assembled onto half of the fleet's Liberty Class transports and sent to known deposits of ice to acquire water." The screen displays a map of the all too vividly familiar Hesperos system.

"The 1st Marine Expeditionary Unit will be escorting the transports in a squadron of assault shuttles, backed by VFA-141, The Shadowhawks. VMFA-21 was originally slated for this role, but due to casualties from the recent fracas, had to be replaced." He nods slightly in consolation to Halko, apparently aware of the enlisted man's fondness of VMFA-21's injured, hot-shot 3rd Lieutenant. "The 1st will protect the work crews and seize control of the asteroid base your unit previously reconned for use as a staging base. Operations will continue in the belt between the first and second planets until such time as our stores of potable water are at capacity, or we're forced to abandon the system." He pauses for a moment before adding, "When they're done, we can all return to regular water schedules, so people won't stink so bad, and Doc Links can stop griping about sanitary conditions and potential outbreaks."

"The 2nd SOG is being dispatched to the second planet in the Chandrakant system." The image on the screen flickers to one displaying the relevant system from data gathered by the 1st SOG and refined by the folks in the stellar cartography division.

"The 2nd SOG has two directives: gather intel on that Atorian ship you folks spotted..." Nibiru smiles broadly, "and hunt us up some animal and plant samples. Three entire decks of the Profit Motive have been reconfigured for hydroponic use, and another deck has been reconfigured for our scientists to grow us proteins based off of yeast samples, and other stuff I wouldn't know the first thing about explaining. Suffice it to say that they're confident they can grow us meat given time, water, and the proper biomass. They've assured the Captains that this will produce much better rations than our current nutrient paste. They have not claimed that this will be anywhere near as tasty as a proper steak, just that it'll be more comprehensively nutritive. This is a huge operation that will take a few weeks, and supply department is running it, so I wouldn't expect much help in the coming few weeks from them regarding supplies or manpower help." The screen goes blank again. "Your reports on the previously noted systems have all been provided to the commanding officers of the various units to facilitate their success."

The blank screen fills with an image of what appears to be a large space station or orbital habitat of some sort, but it appears bigger than anything anyone has ever seen or even heard word about.

"Grymdin is a large, artificial planetoid. What intel we've received over the years has been less than reliable. It hasn't been reported in a planetary system for well over a decade, and intel reports have put it in three different stellar systems since we began to receive intel about it. Our best present guess places it in a small nebula a few light years spinward of Nystum, on the periphery of our detailed knowledge of local space."

Nibiru's tone changes slightly. The more perceptive among the group will realize that he's conflicted about what he says next. "Grymdin is apparently a criminal enterprise on a massive scale. Lieutenant Hunter, I've sent you a classified and redacted report from FAR on Grymdin. See to it that your squadmates receive a copy and study it in detail."

"The report is something on the order of twenty years old, and was the last such report that the operatives of FAR have been able to extract from the place. Miss Starborn, the liaison you briefly worked with some weeks back, was able to provide this to the Admiralty in exchange for some of our own intel regarding the homeworld's destruction. I hate to send you off with intelligence that's twenty years old, but this is apparently the best intel that anyone has." He takes a long, slow, savoring sip from the cup of caff on the table before continuing.

"You're being sent to Grymdin to acquire foodstuffs for the short-term (as supply department's operation will take some time), and acquire intelligence about the key players there. Grymdin is known throughout the quadrant as a sort of criminal and pirate's haven, so much should be available, but the political economy of Grymdin is actually a huge, unknown factor. The 1st SOG is to find out who has the authority to negotiate a short-term trade deal and arrange a future meeting with A.D.F. leadership. Use your heads, folks. Think outside of the box on this one. If you see an opportunity that you think might benefit the fleet, explore it. The parameters of your mission objectives are loose and fluid for this very reason: we need resources in the short-term if we're to be able to seriously consider our long-term objectives and how to meet them." He kills the image on screen.

"You've got four days to get your ship and gear properly sorted out and ready. I'm open to questions, but I think you'll find that report sums up what's known about Grymdin."

Morning comes and after rising and showering, Brainiac heads to the briefing room. Upon being told about the caff, Ryden sips the caff almost reverently. It's been a while since he's had any and he will get a second cup if its available after everyone has had some. He sits down at a bench, datapad at the ready. His fingers fly over the keyboard as he makes notes. When the second is mentioned, he raises his hand and speaks when called on. "Don't forget the carnivourous plants or just how mega their megafauna gets. I think that station is in a geosynchronous orbit, but either way, make sure to use the planet to shield their approach. That assault shuttle is no joke."

Ryden peruses the file when Speckles mentions it. Notes are made and he transmits it and the summary to each member of the 1st SOG.
Grymdin Summary
  • Pirate Stronghold masquerading as semi-legitamate business cartels.
  • Run by six familes. Four are Pirates, one runs a spy ring, and another specialize in theft.
  • Rumored to have killed the aliens who upgraded their planetoid from rust bucket to high tech paradise.
  • Corruption, manipulation, lying, bribery, extortion, and cons are aspects of daily lives. Trust nothing and no one.
  • Slave Trade still flourishes, but not in a vulgar fashion. Use magic, psionics, and technology to make their slaves more docile and presentable.
  • Home of the Soldier Services Directory. It's a database and message board usable by members only. Bounty Hunters, Mercs, and freelancers of all sorts are available.

  • Bounties are not honored or even recognized and there are no extradition laws.
  • Planetoid spaceports are for the six ruling families. The three Space Stations are for public use.

  • Member of the FAR; rumored to provide intel on the Atorians to the FAR, as well as stopping rival criminal groups. Always keep their dirt hidden and avoid any legal or political ramifications.

He raises his hand again when Speckles finishes. "What kind of funds do we have available? Barter isn't going to work, and we need to know what kind of terms to work out. Bulk food isn't cheap. Also, do we have some sort of scanner we can get which will help us make sure the food works for us?" He pauses for answers, then continues. "Do we know what the race of the people of Grymdin are? It doesn't say here."

Nibiru responds, leaning forward onto the table somewhat tiredly as he does so. "To your first question, via our former FAR liaison, we have been able to seize what few off-world assets were held by Arismal, and quietly liquidate them into exchangeable funds. The quadrant uses what's known as a 'universal credit' to negotiate exchanges of value. This money is a form of digital currency backed by units of stabilized francium-223 held in reserve on economically vital FAR worlds. Captain Cardea has arranged for the transfer of some of these funds to a single encrypted device with which you can make operational purchases in the field. To your second question: no; use good judgment. To your third question, you just find out who has the authority to negotiate a short-term trade deal and arrange a future meeting with A.D.F. leadership. That's how we'll get our teeth on something worth chewing. If you can get samples of such, all the better. To your last question: we don't know."

Niall enters the Ready Room, having taken a quick shower to make himself presentable. More of a misting, really...

He takes the advice about the caff, and treats it like a fine wine. May never get another cup of real Arismal caff. He puts his nose deep into the cup, inhaling the bouquet. It's rich, and loamy, and puts him in mind of Arismal tropics region where the beans were grown. He thinks of the fertile black soil, and the weathered hands that picked the beans - both gone now. He thinks of the hot sun and the pouring rain, under skies that no longer exist. He withdraws his nose.

He looks at the liquid. Brown almost to blackness, with a slight viscosity that water doesn't have. Beans roasted, brewed, and filtered, to give the caff it's husky, slightly bitter taste. There had been exotic caffs on Arismal, back before. Beans that only grew at certain altitudes, or with a certain amount of rainfall, or if fertilized a particular way. We almost always had that stuff at home. This isn't that stuff. This is basic, strong Arismal caff.

He takes a sip - it's hot, with a slight bite, and a back-of-the-mouth tang. And it's as good as it's ever been... or going to be. He's had plenty of cups of caff in his young life. Good, bad, plain or with additives. This, he thinks, is the finest cup I've ever had.

Niall listens to the briefing with a mixture of hope and embarrassment. They have already thought of many of the things in my proposal. But hell... I'm not removing them now. It's good that we're moving on some of this stuff. Let's get it done.

Niall listens to the info about Grymdin, and tries to remember what he may have heard about the place and its inhabitants. Aliens, he reminds himself, and tries to stifle a guilty look at Gillina. I thought she was an alien too. Hearing it harbors criminal elements, Niall's stomach turns. Settle it, zeddeus. You didn't expect an alien-run planetoid to be a safe harbor, did you? He thinks of the other criminals they've encountered since he was assigned to the 1st SOG - the pirates on the asteroid base - and tries to remember if they have any connection to grymdin.

When told to "think outside the box", Niall smiles. "There's a box?"

When Speckles notes that off-world assets have been recovered, Niall's stomach sinks further. This damn proposal is turning into a worse and worse idea every moment. Still... maybe there's one thing... at least one thing... that they may not've considered. that'd make it worthwhile.

The PA Pilot drifts into the Briefing Room around 6:45 and takes the same seat as last time. When Nibiru offers up the Caff, CJ will grab a cup and take it back to his seat to nurse with sugar though he foregoes the cream-substitute, **Last of the good stuff ... Not just 'no more running down to the corner store' ... this is the end of the Fleet's stores.**

CJ Listens carefully to the Briefing explaining the Ice-Mining phase and Hydroponics plan for Hesperos coupled with the 2nd SOG revisiting the Chandrakant system to hunt up some game, **Badass. Hesperos ... ahhh another shot at my friend Vaxil and his merry little band of Marauders. If we can wipe them out we can establish a piece of rock that's ours alone once more. Hopefully when we get back we'll have Dino-Steaks ... Did he say Grymdin? ...**

Savoring a small sip, CJ clears his throat to speak, "When I was being held by the Pirates based in Hesperos, they were making a quick run back there before taking us off to Grymdin. They talked about it on-and-off like it was a playground and they seemed to think there would be high bidders for Arismal ... except Halko of course hehehe. I think the Osprey could be a good route to go ... low key and incognito ... and once we sanitize the Hesperos Station, we should be able to confirm routes to Grymdin. No knowing whether Vaxil and Co. may have discussed their lost quarry ... hopefully if they made the trip they wouldn't reference a raid on their base, should be a bit embarrassing to admit." He'll flip open the Report and start reading as he listens to the others.

Gilina walks into the briefing room, letting her muscles work, instead of using her flight power. Her uniform still fairly crisp as she had not used it much since she had been minted into the service a mere few weeks earlier.

She sits down, a few seats away from Niall, and behind him. Her gaze constantly flicks over to the man who had tried to kill her. It was the Mind Benders Jill, it wasn't him. Even with herself forcing to work with the man, she had a hard time trusting him.

Her mind shifted gears, when LCDR Akeno speaks and talks about the caff. Caff... Jill wasn't much of a caff drinker, instead she liked the more uppity drinks barista's served all over the place. But she had started to get used to the liquid gold that was on board the Dauntless. She waited for everyone else to get their drink before she made her way to grab hers. Hoping that those around her wouldn't pass judgement as she sweetened and lightened the pitch black gold. Her hands grasped the warm cup and she took her sip, savoring every moment before heading back to her seat.

She listens intently, while studying the mission details. When Niall cracks his joke about the box Gilina smiles, and then it quickly fades. Her mind races over the possible scenarios on how to access the colony world without getting shot down. Mercenaries, Traders, Smugglers... We could say we are a mercenary group who needs to trade for a mining operation... But these folks are criminals? They would want to follow and take over then...

"Sir, what kind of support from the fleet do we have?" Gilina then adds, "If things go sideways."

After spending a few days taking it easy and letting his mind and body rest, Rosseyn is feeling much better than after he was reduced to the efficiency of a toddler in a pool of syrup. Heading into the Ready Room, he smiles at Lt. Akeno, grabs his cup of caff and has a seat. In his seat, he takes the first sip of the last caff and savors it.

Through the briefing, he nods quietly. Good to see our work being put to some use.

Oh... that blonde in the white flight suit. The one that smelled like persimmons. Was it Sara? She was playing hard to get. Her Tinal friend however... That would have been interesting.
"Grymdin. That's where those three hot..." Nova looks minorly ashamed, having forgotten that work is work and not the time to talk about his flirtations with women. "On Station Kelpha, we ran into a group of women who needed passage to Grymdin. While we were looking for Jorel Quinn and Rexan Wyn." He takes a good close look at the image of Grymdin on the screen. "That is much, much larger than what I was expecting." Rosseyn lets Ryden process the information and waits for his summary to be sent to Nova's datapad. Reading through the summary, he smiles. "Right up my alley. I'll work on creating some new identities for us. Brain and Fang, I want the two of you to... redecorate our equipment. Make us look like real scumsuckers. Grow beards if you've got em. Hell, we're out of water until they come back with that ice anyway, right?"

Ryden snorts at Nova's statement. "More like all the support we get." He looks at the civilian turned soldier with some measure of sympathy. "I asked pretty much the same question my first day. It's a valid question from the outside. That said, we have only the support we create. Walk in like you own the place, demand what's yours and walk out while they are still confused. That's about as close to support as we'll get. We like allies though, so if you make a friend, make sure to let us know so we can be their friend too."

Something Nova says triggers something. "Was Quinn or Wyn associated with Grymdin?" (OOC: Only Halko knows, but yes). If anyone answers yes, he nods. "Might be an in for us. Previously existing relationship and all."

If/when a lull presents itself Cairo asks Nibiru quietly, "We're due to overhaul the Osprey later today. Did you get a request for us to use it for a quick run from the SUPPO? Need a few parts from across the way and apparently we have alot more space than an Albatross until Brainiac gets ahold of it."

OOC: Not seeing a Pre-Briefing response, so I thought I'd check.

He ponders Nova's assignment for a few moments, **Scumsuckers ehh?? ... I'm more inclined to go Quality Merc than Pirate like Vaxil ... I will have to brainstorm with Ryden ... I know he wanted to masquerade as Kassans and that doesn't scream Grunge to me ... The report says they use shuttles to get folks to Grymdin after you dock at one of the Stations ... so if we're going to be separated from our ship and heavy gear maybe we want to look a bit more well-to-do than the bottom of the barrel. Also means quick getaways may be limited ... well except for Nova. Me and Jill's flight might also work ... Maybe we need to bring along someone to make sure the ship doesn't wander off ... Kassans, what do we recall of them? Maybe the Fleet has a database on them? Maybe some of those rich civilians met a few or did business with em ... **

Halko walks into the briefing and waits his turn to pour a cup of the offered caff then goes and takes his seat. Taking notes as the briefing goes along, something about Grymdin starts itching at the back of his head and he starts tapping on the desk as he tries to think of what it might be. Good, the 1st MEU and The Shadowhawks are gonna clear out those pirates and get us a good asteroid base. The 2nd SOG get the hunting trip. Maybe that city ship will be gone when they get there.

Halko grins when Cairo slips a joke into his reply about the pirates in the Hesperos system, so he quips back, "Hey, we can't all be officers." Then he grins at the room filled with brass. As the conversation goes on, Halko hears something that spurs his memory.

Then he raises a hand and points to no one in particular, "Yeah, that's is! Jorel Quinn. She said he works for a syndicate that bases on Grymdin. Maybe that's our way in? Of course Nova did say something about ripping the man's arms off if he tried anything with that FAR Op we had with us."

He's one of Vaxil's boys. Oh I owe that guy a beating of epic proportions. You guys met up with him back on Kelpha? and he's linked to a syndicate on Grymdin? Interesting. So who was Rexan Wyn? What was this previously existing relationship? ... "

**Ok so, Jorel was the one who spotted Gawenna the Atorian as a potential asset. He keeps his eyes open and aware for potential slaving and ransom targets. Hits like a little girl, but he could know enough to be dangerous ... how much will Grymdin know of the Arismal before we set foot there? The 1st SOG had run across Jorel at some point. Was that before Vaxil grabbed me up? Were Lazash & I stuck aboard Vaxil's ship with the 1st SOG on the farside of a Station? ... **

Jill sits back feeling a little foolish with her question, when everyone around her starts to pipe up that there is no help, no exit strategy, and they are on their own. Who in their right mind thought it was bright to put me... ME! With these soldiers. I am so far outside of my element, The training and instruction was minimal... Hell I joined up because I thought I'd be repairing the Dauntless or designing a new warship. Not going half cocked across the galaxy, trying to find food. She looks at her team some more. Dammit, I'm here to build machinery that makes food!

She listens some more, and then asks another potentially stupid question to the team, "If we decide to go as mercenaries, wouldn't we want to have a ship that looks more like a gunship? Lots of weapons and armor? Something that looks like it can take a beating and keep on ticking? Don't get me wrong, I'll work on whatever you guys want to build. If we are to look the part, we should look the part... right?"

"They're differing types of Mercenaries and Bounty Hunters. Flying a Gunship in isn't always appropriate ... and we seem to have gone 0 for 2 on those. We can be the type who focus on quietly ending problems .... it plays to some of our strengths."

**Flipping not mine because I'll put a Gunship through the eye of a damn Needle but who knows when we'll get to do that.** Fang clicks open the Wyn dossier and reads through it, ** Don't know this one. Looks kind of like a cousin of our big scaley playmate from Chandrakant though ... **

Nibiru clears his throat. "I've approved your request and sent it up the chain to the ATO. Okay, folks, you've spent enough time malingering around this water cooler. Get your shit taken care of. I remind you that you have only a few days until we shove you out the airlock, so to speak. Dismissed." With that, he ushers everyone out the ready room, closes it behind him, and disappears down the passageways en route to other duties.

Halko & Jill, can you guys come with me to make the loading and unloading quicker? Brainiac was showing ~ 25 tons worth of stuff for the Dauntless. If Halko and I hop into the Marine Suits we have, we should be able to knock it out with very minimal effort and get back once Brainiac and Niall finish inventory of the parts they requisitioned."

This is where the 1st S.O.G. receives briefings on new missions, and cools their heels when on ALERT STANDBY duty. Adjoining the ready room is the office for the 1st SOG's commanding officer.
