Background Story

Corri, there aren't very many of us on Earth to start with. Our kind are long lived and you'll see a hundred and twenty five to be sure, but you'll only be able to have children until thirty five if you are lucky. So, why don't you think about this some? Now's not the time to go anywhere. It's time to stay at home and raise a family and develop your career. When there are so few of us, you have to think about your people before yourself. Come on and come home, I'm not going to see my only daughter be a spinster and age to barren before she marries.

I'm sorry, father. You've come a hell of a long way from Queenston to tell me the same crud you've been spooning on me since I was in booties. Go on home, why don't you.

Come on. Donald's a good man. He led the raid on -

Aye, and he's a good man. He's a good Captain and a good this and a good that. I've told you a thousand times and I'm telling you again - I don't want to marry, I don't want a family, and I don't want to come home. I'm trying to learn something. There's a whole world past the lakes to explore. These people, they've built things - things we can use. I'm going to learn what they know and bring it back when I'm ready.

... seriously? You really aren't coming home are you? Do you have any idea how much your education cost? How much I sacrificed to get you into the guild? Corrigan, you owe me better than that. I want grandchildren. It's your obligation as my only child to provide our house with a heir. If you don't --

Does it seem like my mind's going to change now? We've had this conversation so many times, I'm nigh on fucking tired of it.

..... if you don't come home now, don't bother coming home at all! I'll tell them you are dead so that --

Well, why don't you go on and do that then? I'll sort it out eventually when I come back, and as to your costs when I learn to --

Corrigan, I'm not asking for much! Ten years, that's all. We'll even look after the child -- your mother and I -- you can buy a smith's shop and work it -- whatever you want, Donald's away at sea most of the time anyway.

I.... I don't want Captain Donald.

.... I don't know why. Most of the women around the harbor think he's good enough to gossip about. This isn't about what you want, anyway, can't you hold your nose and do it for our family?

.....No, I can't. Not even for that. I just can't.

Then don't come home. You've ruined us! I just hope you change your mind, this is the end of our line!

Corrigan remembered that conversation every time she closed her eyes. That was the day that she gave up her dreams for what her father wanted for her like a good nobleman's daughter should. She'd been travelling, how he tracked her to Kingsdale she had no idea. Always on the move, earning her way along a day at a time by doing small jobs, it wasn't becoming of what a Runesmith should be doing. That's what they told her anyway. It wasn't appropriate for someone of her station and education to be meandering about in a crazy world. She should be making everyone wealthy. And her ideas! She should be sticking to traditional Nuhr items, not trying to incorporate the thoughts of other cultures into what is tried, true and worked perfectly well.

It was her sense of duty that convinced her to go back. He was right, she really did owe him.

So she'd done as he asked, grunted out Ilyana and Sinead from Captain Donald and played the role of dutiful wife.

She'd not wanted any of it. Donald wasn't horrible to her, he was as good of a man as any really, and she regretted that what she was going to do would hurt him. He wouldn't understand, neither would Ilyana or Sinead. But it was all just a sense of duty. She had fulfilled her obligation to her father but all of this time her life had been nothing more than upholding her end of what she saw as a business arrangement and it wasn't Donald's fault he got caught up in that. She liked him, sure enough, but she didn't love him. What hurt the most was that Ilyana and Sinead were the same. She liked them, and the notion of being a family but she did not love them -- and that hurt -- because what mother didn't love her children? Was she some kind of freak, or maybe her brain was wired wrong?

They'd be okay. She was leaving them with the accumulated wealth of the decade that she had been married to Captain Donald. It was a small fortune. She'd miss them, but she'd fulfilled her obligations to her father.

What a warped way of thinking. I made things even with my father, but what about Ilyana and Sinead? I should feel like I've got obligations to them, too.

Her obligation was to make sure they were safe and would be happy. She knew they would be both. Donald would tell them something happened to her and they'd all just not miss her after awhile.

She would come back and make things right again, but not for a few decades. Donald will have divorced me by then and gotten another woman so I won't be bothered.

Donald didn't love me anyway. He was married to the sea.

That's what she told herself as she took his most loved firearm from his cabin as she left Queenston Harbour.

Thinking that made it easier to justify the theft of a much-treasured and valuable weapon. She made it for him years ago, back when she was younger and still believed she could learn to love him. It was worth a small fortune and by far the best work she had ever done.

Oh, well. I made it and by marrying me our property became combined. So, guess I'm just taking what's mine.

Maybe she'd actually put it to use, the last time Donald shot at anything it was a whale dumb enough to wander up the St. Lawrence.

Anything's better than staying here.

It was pure luck that had her run into a caravan heading to a place called MercTown. They were short a few people and guard leader sold her on escorting it by telling her "Well, it's basically the new Kingsdale."

MercTown. She thought. Starting again. At least I won't be forgebound and bored. I'll find someone here doing something interesting. And maybe someday I'll find someone to tell me why I'm half as messed up as I am and if I'm very, very lucky I'll be able to sleep at night and listen to myself when I justify the things I've done.

Theme Music /w the relevant snippets of lyrics:

#1 - You Are A Pirate - Alestorm - Nuhr dwarves and her upbringing.

Yar har, fiddle di dee,
Being a pirate is all right with me,
Do what you want 'cause a pirate is free,
You are a pirate!
Yo Ho, ahoy and avast,
Being a pirate is really badass!
Hang the black flag at the end of the mast!
You are a pirate!

-Alestorm (Originally written for Lazy Town), You Are A Pirate

#2 - Bloody Good Barfight Song - Carbon Leaf - Echoes of her family life as well as her general personality and behavior.

Everything you have
Is all you've ever known
Hang up the golden gloves
Time to claw down to the bone

Serve it up to swill
Til everything you have begins to spill
One is all you need
And all you need is life to sing along

Everything was fine
Until you bruised your way
Into my life
You're like one good bloody
Bloody good bar-fight song

-Carbon Leaf, Bloody Good Bar Fight Song

#3 - Hero Of The Day - Metallica

Excuse me while I tend to how I feel
These things return to me that still seem real
Now, deservingly, this easy chair
But the rocking stopped by wheels of despair

Don’t want your aid
But the fist I make
For years can’t hold or feel
No, I’m not all me
So please excuse me while I tend to how I feel

-Hero Of The Day, Metallica

#4 - Don't Take Your Guns to Town - Johnny Cash -

A young cowboy named Billy Joe grew restless on the farm
A boy filled with wonderlust who really meant no harm
He changed his clothes and shined his boots
And combed his dark hair down
And his mother cried as he walked out

Don't take your guns to town son
Leave your guns at home Bill
Don't take your guns to town

He laughed and kissed his mom
And said your Billy Joe's a man
I can shoot as quick and straight as anybody can
But I wouldn't shoot without a cause
I'd gun nobody down
But she cried again as he rode away

-Don't Take Your Guns To Town, Johnny Cash

#5 - When You Were Young - The Killers -

They say the devil's water, it ain't so sweet
You don't have to drink right now
But you can dip your feet
Every once in a little while

You sit there in your heartache
Waiting on some beautiful boy to
To save you from your old ways
You play forgiveness
Watch it now, here he comes

He doesn't look a thing like Jesus
But he talks like a gentlemen
Like you imagined when you were young
(Talks like a gentlemen, like you imagined)
When you were young

-The Killers, When You Were Young

Devil's Right Hand - Steve Earle -

About the time that Daddy left to fight the big war
I saw my first pistol in the general store
In the general store, when I was thirteen
Thought it was the finest thing I ever had seen

So l asked if I could have one someday when I grew up
Mama dropped a dozen eggs, she really blew up
She really blew up, I didn't understand

Mama said the pistol is the devil's right hand
The devil's right hand, the devil's right hand
Mama said the pistol is the devil's right hand

My very first pistol was a cap and ball Colt
Shoot as fast as lightnin' but she loads a might slow
Loads a might slow, soon found out
It can get you into trouble but it can't get you out

-Steve Earle, Devil's Right Hand
