Background

Post by Macher »

Background Story

Born and raised in the foothills of the Rocky Mountains outside of Colorado Springs, CO, my first 15 years were better than most. An only child my parents put all their resources into me. Eagle Scout, honor student, and 3 season athlete, I felt I had it all. That changed during my Sophomore year, when both of my parents were killed by a drunk driver.

Some would say I was lucky because there was a foster home in my town, so I didn’t need to move or change schools. I didn’t see it that way. Dealing with anger and depression, I went from a ‘Superman’ to a ‘Batman’. I still would not bully and protected those weaker than I was, but now I did it with my fists before my words.

At high school graduation I joined the Army as a Combat Engineer and was stationed at Ft. Bragg. Airborne, Air Assault, and Ranger, most of the first couple years were spent in training and I soaked it up. I learned demolitions, traps, survival, and a host of other skills that built about what I had learned in Boy Scouts and the mountains of Colorado. After my first enlistment I wanted something different, so I reclassed to Military Police and was stationed at Ft. Hood.

While being a Combat Engineer provided the training, MP’s gave me discipline and direction for my “savior” complex. No longer did I use force first. Instead it is used only when needed and allowed. I hold tight to regulations and rules of engagement to keep me stable. And SFC Clausen, my first military police platoon sergeant. His voice is the one I hear when making decisions. Often, a final decision is made by asking myself What would SFC Clausen think of me if I did this?.

Recently returned from deployment, I needed to take some time off. Ft. Hood is closer to New Orleans than I had ever been, so I thought I would take advantage of this and see some sights and maybe camp across the south. I had just arrived in New Orleans and was checking into the hotel when the First Wave hit and found myself caught up in the chaos.

I know I have relationships issues, am emotionally distant, and likely have some level of PTSD after two tours. I have friends, but tend to not get close with anyone for fear of losing them as I lost my parents. With nothing for me back at Ft. Hood other than my house, after the wave isn’t much different than before the wave.

Stay alive, be loyal to your team, protect the innocent, stop the monsters and remember your training:

1) Combat - “When facing a superior opponent, whether in skill, ability, or numbers, every strike must be intended to cripple or kill” & “Those in front of the forward line of advance are combatants. Those behind are either POW’s or dead. We don’t take POW’s.”
2) Non-combat – “Innocent until proven guilty” & “follow the book and get it right! If you get it wrong, you either hurt an innocent person or let a guilty person go free”

Perception: 15% / 1d100: [82] = 82
JIC: 1d20: [14] = 14 / 1d100: [58] = 58
Conditions: +5 v HF, +2 v Non-lethal Toxins, +4 v Lethal Toxins;
Automobile: 63%/ 1d100: [81] = 81

Tootling along at the leisurely pace set by the convoy lead, Macher stays alert to the environment around him. Vehicles, people, soda cans, all can be a threat. Up ahead he spots a man running next to the road. Do I pick him up? I could use a gunner, but at the speed his is running he might make it to safety before we do. He shoots a glance at the motorcycle in front of him. Hell, the lady on the bike looks like she is about to vibrate off the seat at this speed.

Macher loosens his handgun in its holster and slows down to match the speed of the running man. He gives the newcomer a once over.

Contingency:

If the newcomer looks dangerous (crazy eyes, like the walking dead, moans "brains" and lunges for the car, etc.) Macher will speed up and leave him.

If the newcomer looks ok (maybe bloody, but not his blood, looks like he is in control of himself, etc.). Macher rolls down the window and says, "Hey buddy, need a lift?", then unlock the door and draw his survival knife, leaving it resting at the ready in his lap.
