The Spooks collective debrief shifts to the datastick hidden in Grimloq's tobacco pouch. Conversation centers on the nature of the data stick and brainstorming the Soul Forge.

Lahz sends Ray off to procure a clean computer before examining the data stick directly. His telemechanical intuition bears immediate fruit. The data stick contains the core electronic hardware necessary for the storage of data, but clearly serves a second purpose. The remainder of the hardware appears to be some manner of electronic relay, building up power and sending out a burst of signal for one minute every 2 hours. In effect, it is a tracking device predictably relaying signal. The blinking red light turns out to be an add-on to the data stick, a miniaturized audio-device designed to playback a recorded message. It is a smaller version of a trinket commonly found in electronic shops. And appears to be lightly soldered onto the datastick.

Based on the content of the message, the villagers figured out that they were somehow being tracked by the datastick and did not wish to relinquish the stick to the CS, so have unintentionally redirected the Coalition's ire toward the Spook Squad via Grimloq the tobacco mule.

Ray soon returns with a new clean laser holo computer having spent 22.5k ((not deducted)). Lahz unboxes it, turns off wireless and plugs in the data stick. Its contents are surprisingly unencrypted. There are numerous audio journal entries and documents detailing Soul Forge information including bio-energy measurements, test trials involving various D-bees/demon subjects and other scientific reports. They are very analytical in nature and reveal an inquisitive mind laser-focused on results (with little empathy).

Lahz focuses his psychic energy on seeking the Bomb Maker and successfully latches on. He senses his quarry within range and feels the directional pull.

Lahz kills the holographic images, unplugs the Datastick with TK and floats it to Ray, "Take this upstairs to the 3rd Floor, put it on the top floor of the bookshelf. Stay there. I will radio if I need it brought back."

The Elf''s eyes scan across the screen as his fingers dance along the keyboard, "The Datastick thing includes a burst-coded tracking device. Sends out a radio signal every hour although the receiving distance really cannot be too far. Also, the Bomb-Maker is still in Merctown." The Psi-Tech looks up at the others, "What do we think? There's a few options ... First, bring the Stick to the Magic College for a couple hours, then I can turn off the transmitter after it sends off a couple signals. Deuce can drop it through a rift to somewhere safe on another world. Y'know bury it in a box on another planet. They'll know last location on the Stick was outside the Haunt and given the rift-activity, with no more signals it's most likely lost. Second, duplicate the encryption and transmission, wipe the data off the stick and toss it in the trash. Then we use the signal to follow them back. Don't love that one because it dead ends here, but when they go through the garbage they may think they have been chasing a blank. Third, duplicate the files on a clean drive and record over the audio, then let the actual Datastick get taken ... make it a message to ... I don't know, Dunscon? He already is at the top of their shitlist. If they think the Federation of Magic was looking to grab at magic knowledge, big whoop. If the Coalition thinks they have achieved their goal of retrieving the info, we're off the to-do list. Basically just need somewhere to unobtrusively 'lose' the pouch. Maybe at the Palace, they can chase it down next time it signals and then think they know it all, but at that point I don't want to discuss anything that can get psychically re-read around the object. Can erase the audio and then have Ray re-record using a mechanical voice so there are no telltale audio prints. Having your tricks used against you is sloppy right? Hehehe ... There's probably a thousand other ways, but let me open the floor to suggestions."

Ronan leans back in his chair as the others converse and shrugs. "What sort of people would pay for this sorta thing? I'm miffed we got scoped out at all. I'm not a fan of voyeurism, so I'm already game to crack some skulls. Just say the word." He adds, looking at his empty glass before shrugging. "That said, a good bit of payment never hurts to motivate one." He adds, rolling his shoulders and getting up to refill his drink while they wait for Ray to return. He'll let Zzazz in when he sees him.

As he returns, he listens to Lahz explain what he gleaned off the canister, and stifles a laugh when Lahz suggests it's an ex-suitor for Mierin. "Oh, I'm not sure an ex suitor would still be alive to talk about it." Ronan jests, though his joking expression fades as Lahz divulges his daughter's former death at their hands.

"So, at this point, it's personal then. I'm no saint, but targeting a kid is a line I don't like." Ronan says coldly.

Ronan snags the datadisk from the table and pops open one of his pockets Vheld made him and adds. "I can take the stick to that guild. I followed V there before and can hide it in my pocket. And when it comes to playing capture the flag, no one can steal from me." Ronan says, his sarcastic humor returning slightly. "Can copy the data and let me hold this transmitting stick. If I remember right, this pocket thing V made me will remove it from all things able to be sensed." Ronan offers, closing the bag after dropping the data disk inside it, and takes another drink.

"I'm used to being the distraction for my former team, comes with the territory. But if others have better ideas, just let me know what you want me to do." Ronan finishes.

”Sir Ronith? ... You know, the nice guy. We can send it with a basket of muffins and a note that says 'We're building a badass team ship at the moment and cannot fit this into our schedule, love & kissez the Spooks.' The 'we don't want the Coalition to get their hands on this' argument feels like one you make to ... I dunno Dweomer. Gets someone to pay for the task of removal."
Mierin nods. ”Yeah, it's Ronith. I worked with him briefly awhile back. Though I disagree – for something like this, we'd want to send a nice fruit basket.” Mierin listens to the conversation regarding the Soul Forge and sighs. ”I agree with Lahz on this one - if we did undertake this, it would mean having the CS in our backyard and trailing us for the foreseeable future. I can't say I'm all that excited about that prospect.” While Mierin has no issues with putting down CS soldiers if they got in the way of what she was working on, she also didn't go out of her way to piss them off either. Ex-CS soldier or not, she didn't want to give them an excuse to target her.
Grimloq nods at Mierin. ”Yeah yeah, the Boss already told me- don’t give the kid cancer.”
Mierin shrugs. ”I was asking more for me. I haven't been to hell and back and helped take now Nyxla only to be taken down by cancer.” A look of disgust comes over Mierin's face at the thought of something so mundane being the cause of her death. That would seriously piss me off.

Mierin shakes her head with a smirk at Lahz and Ronan's jokes about one of the CS soldiers being an ex-suitor. ”Very funny.” She shrugs ”Stranger things have happened.” Mierin frowns a little at Lahz's mention of the CS's killing his daughter and getting her back to the underworld. ”I'm sorry, what? How exactly did you manage that?” Mierin didn't always ask personal questions but, in this case, she wouldn't help herself. Mierin looks at the images Lahz constructed to see if she recognizes any of the people Lahz had seen.

At the suggestion of the plan, Mierin nods at Lahz. ”That's a good a plan as any. Could get the CS off our back. If Rook's pocket helps hide it, all the better.“

[/ooc]Vheld sits calmly and silently in the corner with one hand clutching his staff and the other in his lap, listening to the others debate and discuss and strategize. I can’t waste this opportunity- turning this mission over to some cyber-knight will only ensure the Soul Forge’s destruction. I suppose claiming its magicks for myself without the rest of the team knowing is not feasible. I suppose I could pay them myself… But that would leave me short on funds when the time comes to retake Atlantis. Perhaps I can convince the others some other way.
Lahz wrote:"Take this upstairs to the 3rd Floor, put it on the top floor of the bookshelf. Stay there. I will radio if I need it brought back."
”Wait.” Vheld points at Ray, then at Ronan. ”Give it to Ronan. Ronan, head down to the collegiate arcane. Find a park or somewhere nearby to sit for a couple hours. Then, pop the chip into the dimensional envelope I gave you. That should cut off the signal- at least until we want to reactivate it.”
Lahz wrote:Lahz is not wholly convinced either way but his skepticism is healthy and he wants to raise the potential concerns to the others.
Vheld finally speaks up after everyone else has had their say. ”I agree that our next move should be to investigate- and neutralize- this team operating in the Warrens. However, before we turn this task over to some do-gooder or other, allow me to make two points. First, it is extremely unlikely that this mission has the blessing of Coalition High Command. Soul Forging is the very essence of what they fear about magic- even if this is some sort of covert op or renegade, there is no chance Prosek and his ilk have signed off on it. Best-case scenario, that means we only have a small Coalition team to deal with, and once that is done the CS will be quick to cover the whole mess up. Worst-case, I think it gives us an opportunity to turn this into enough of a public relations embarrassment for the CS that they will be unwilling to commit further resources to retaliating against us.” And if not, I can always return to Phase World.

”Second point, and with all due respect, I think that you are being rather short-sighted regarding the financial angle here. Yes, there is no payment in the offering for this job- yet. However, if we can recover the secrets of soul forging, and any items needed to perform it, this mission will quickly pay for itself. I can summon all of the life force we need to power it, at which point we can create a thriving side-business selling powerful magic weapons to a town full of mercenaries. Even if the macabre nature of soul forging proves a barrier, I would wager that some of our new friends in the Federation of Magic would be more than happy to become business partners and manage the distribution aspect.”

”I realize that this is hardly a risk-free proposition, but the potential rewards are enormous, and in my opinion worth considering.”

Ronan nods, leaning back in his chair. "Easy enough. Trick them then ditch them. Might try to hide out in a building just to avoid visual surveillance." Ronan muses then adds. "Keep it in the pocket now, while we talk. Copy it, take it somewhere and take it out of the pocket for a few hours, then drop it back in and leave it. That way it vanishes and they can't trace where I go, so they don't know that I have it. Send them scrambling to find me for a couple hours, then they lose it again." Ronan adds, looking for some input. I think like a soldier, and I've got to start thinking like a mercenary. Ronan affirms in his head.

He won't comment on Vheld's sell, figuring it's more for the powers of the Squad, not the FNGs. They already know I'll do the job if asked so, no point restating that.

Wayne Charles Northblade the Fifth is bored. As one of the newer recruits to the Spook Squad, he knows enough to not show it outwardly, lest Sir Thorn decide to talk at him again of virtue and respect from a mouth that smelled like a Butter Troll died in it a month ago. Lest he get that stare again from Queen Mierin that said without question "I will kill you in your sleep if you bother me". Lest he... wait... why was Ronan looking at him like that?
Ronan wrote:He glances to Northblade with a half-cocked smile.
That man terrifies me. Out of everyone here, he might be the one to end my life. Wayne pauses in thought for a second and then comes to a conclusion. He must become my new friend. Keep your friends close and your enemies in the ground.

Wayne continues to glance around the room at the talking mouths and the plan making. But he's not paying attention until Vheld speaks.

[Everyone]
Once Lahz completes the copy of the datastick onto the new clean laptop, he removes it with TK and is floating it over to Ray for relocation when Ronan and Vheld offer an alternative suggestion. Moments later, the datastick is safely nestled in a limbo dimension away from potentially prying ears.

Discussion begins in earnest about how to address the datastick and whether or not to get involved with a "Soul Forge".

Eager to amplify his personal power through acquiring the secrets of the mysterious Soul Forge, Vheld encourages his teammates to take on the endeavor even though there is little promise of immediate payout if successful. Step one, he offers, is to find and eliminate the CS team in the Warrens.

[Mierin]
Though she has no recognition of any of the individuals in the holographic projection shown by Lahz, certain details about their CS uniforms stand out. She finds herself a little surprised at not recognizing some of the insignias and medals on display. And can only conclude that the assertion that they are a special black ops group must be correct. She concludes that Vheld's assessment that if killed, they would be disavowed and are unlikely to instigate a rallying cry to pursue the Spooks, is correct. If these black ops guys mysteriously disappear, hardly anyone would notice.

[Zzazz]
As the Lyvorrk thinks about "Soul Forge", he is struck with a sudden flash of insight. The reason why the name sounds so familiar to him is because he had come across a book referencing it while window shopping through Uncommon Knowledge in the Mystic Quarter. He found it odd at the time because it was mistakenly shelved with books about exotic serpents throughout history(a hobby of interest of Zzazz's) and looked rather plain. Entitled, "Mysteries of the Soul Forge", Zzazz had felt a strange pull to examine the contents of the book but was chased out of the bookstore for loitering before he had a chance. It was true, he had been in the store for 4 hours by then.

[Everyone]
The squad splits up.

Ronan heads over to the Collegiate in the Mystic Quarter (continue posting here).

Whereas everyone else (unless Zzazz also wants to head to the Mystic Quarter) heads to the Warrens to investigate and eliminate the CS squad when they pop their heads out in a few hours to respond to the re-emergence of the burst signal over at the Collegiate. (continue posting here)

Spook Squad Headquarters "The Haunt"

This imposing structure in The Hub stands across from the National Park & Botanical Gardens and Klingmar Spa & Resort and is home to the infamous Spook Squad mercenary squad.

This Fenced and Gated lot, has (2) NE-020 Combat Drones, and multiple (3+) humanoid looking defenders that patrol and defend property against aggressors.

I guess now that I know, I am kind of sad about it not being pizza ... He 'requires' their assistance? Amusing. Don't see any heavy weapons really. I could go for a bit of amusing. Why not?** The Tokanii taps the intercom, "This is Sir Thorn. Your Name? Ok ___>Name Given<___ ... you can come up." then the buzzer to open the gate.

At the actual door to the Haunt, Thorn greets the fellow wearing a large loose-fitting robe, a towering 8ft-plus barrel-chested D-bee that resembles a black skinned demon skeleton with teeth the size of steak knives. His light grey exoskeleton plates are almost entirely covered by Cyber-Armor, though his black hair is pulled back in a tight pony-tail bound by a strap.

He does not invite the fellow past or through the doorway, "Hello. Do you know someone on the team?"

Sir Thorn cocks an eyebrow at the little mechanical man-borg thing, **"I am Death" he says ... So, one of those then?** he muses **Lahz and the others are going to get a chuckle of this guy, since we have met the Actual-God-Hades, fought an avatar of the Kali, Hindu Death Goddess ... short circuiting little borg guy seems earnest though.**
"... It has come to my attention, that your team has sent many a soul to the great beyond. You will be my Avatars, you will assist me in the discharge of my duties, as I will lend my immense power to the completion of your endeavours. I do not require sustenance or even money, only souls that you would normally severe during the discharge of your duties. Are the terms of my offer acceptable?"
The Cyberknight known as Sir Thorn is idly passing the time in the gym when the gate-indicator goes off.

Thorn offers the little fellow a wan grin and suppressed chuckle, "You Spook guys are a murdering all-star team, let me join you, you don't have to pay me??? That sounds crazy suspect. Like someone who has legitimately no skill or wants to get inside to steal stuff. Or get inside because he's being hunted and/or chased." The Tokanii shakes his head, "Who sent you over here? ... I should have led with that back at the gate. Are you presently on any hit-lists? Like we are pretty careful about who gets through these doors ..."

The Tokanii 'feels' for any prospective sensor sweeping or weapons targetting that might trigger his Cyberknight senses [Combat Awareness: Advanced] coming off the technical (borg) applicant. **I should have ordered pizzas before the work out ... or Pasta mmmm. Although if he's a full Borg under there, and he becomes a problem, I could probably lop off his head and Lahz can make another robot out of him ... like he had with that other one... Tony?**

"... So are you a Full conversion Borg? Are you a Robot? ... what's your deal? What are you bringing to the table here? ...

First is it suspect for death to gravitate towards a group who has proven themselves capable as deliverers of souls? I think reason would say that is not suspect at all. Second, as far as skill is concerned I am more than willing to demonstrate said skills in service to the Squad's endeavours. I assure you I am quite capable. Thirdly, Death is the ultimate predator. I cannot be prey and in turn cannot be hunted or chased. As for who sent me? A being calling himself Fixer. He assured me that your fatality rate was unprecedented. As for hit lists, I am not certain what that means. Making lists of people to strike sounds silly, therefore due to my ignorance of this phenomenon I cannot assure you that my name does not adorn one of these 'lists'. As for not requiring payment, I don't eat, drink, or sleep. I am a weapon and require no supplies to do the things I do. Why would I need money?"

Thorn bends down a little to examine the comparatively short form of the fellow on the doorstep, "Well, maybe. You could totally believe it. Now American's not my first language, so I could be missing something in a translation ... But you understand that you seem to largely be made of Metal, right? Like inorganic stuff ... " he leans in to eyeball the guy from about 10 inches out and offers a very skeptical look at the Naruni-looking face-plate/helmet thing, "Where are you from? Because the way you are talking, it sounds like you havent really fought anything that could fight back ... Mr. I-am-a-weapon-Why-would-I-need-money? ... The answer there is that the only time funding isn't an issue is if you are so spectacular you never need repairs and have no room for improvement. What I'm hearing sort of suggests you haven't been injured ... but what I am seeing on your exterior, is that somewhere along the line you got frekked up by something at some point in the past and needed repairs ... If you take damage, do you heal??? The 'I dont need supplies or money' idea suggests maybe your experience has been kind of limited to things that couldnt injure you if it successfully hit you?? ... We have a guy like that. Cannot be damaged by conventional means ... my Psi-blades still cut him though." The comment is not threatening, it is very factual.

The Cyberknight straightens as the small borg begins to speak. He hears the little fellow giving a pretty standard, perhaps slightly exaggerated, Spooks-Applicant-spiel ... ***I am a living blah blah blah I am a badass of the N'th Order ... You'd be lucky to have me. How many times are we going to get these? ... But ok, Living ... if it's a robot, there wouldnt be a mind to telepathically reach out to. Just a bunch of Lahzy-Ass-Programming ... He awaoke damaged, got repaired by someone and killed him as a thanks? ... Seems like a lunatic piece of shite.*** A single raised eyebrow responds to the Death-Deluded-Doorknocker, "My name is Sir Thorfinn Skullsplitter. I am a founding member of the Spook Squad. So, are they home? Yes I am. Are we all home? No. But if there were more, you would just be fielding questions from additional people deciding whether you were a Naruni plant, if your approach and attitude make you worthy asset to have in the field, or if we should just kill you "

**He didn't respond to my notes about why money is necessary in this line of work, or really acknowledge the fact that getting fixed costs money for a freaking borg or bot, or whatever. It's very flippant to say I find a way to get repaired ... by killing the people who do the repairs to assist me. It's just shitty, and kind of a very shortsighted delusion if that's really what this guy is ... He's like that fellow from the Palace the other day who said, "Of course I want a double-edged sword, that's twice as much sword!!!" ... before y'know Mierin lost patience.**

The Knight will casually employ Telepathy: Superior (600ft (Probe), 1200ft (Communication), 20.00 Min, -8 ISP) to check for a mind within this fellow's tin-form before continuing, "Fella, I'm sorry I am not going to call you Death. To the Tokanii, death is an event, it is an omnipresent threat ... a largely irreversible cessation of all biological functions that sustain an organism, and since you just got here, your omnipresence is on the light side for me ... so however you want to think of yourself, I am going to suggest you put some thought into how you introduce yourself. They certainly arent going to let you open a Bank account with that ... Now, in the vein of justifying why you thing you belong ... let's do a little skills quiz. Do you have any skills with explosives? Or do you know how to kill a Werewolf? What are the powers of a Vampire? ... " (Lore: Demons & Monsters 95%: 1d100: [37] = 37 -- confirm answers)

The Cyberknight catches some picks up some thought from the smaller fellow as he listens, ***Ok, so living ... it has thoughts. I mean, Brimstone has a personality and a measurable IQ but he has programmed skills, not really thoughts. I am at least picking up thoughts off this guy.***
Ethan Gaunt wrote: Tue Jan 31, 2023 8:09 pm“... You may call me whatever you wish, but seeing as I am wearing my name on my chest, it will be confusing in mixed company. Oh wait are you suggesting a call sign of some sort. Oh that is fun. Is there a theme. Maybe we should wait for the others so that it is an ice breaker of sorts. Death is the only name I have known since my acquisition of this form.” His surface thoughts seem to begin whispering a name Ethan Gaunt as if a distant memory is bleeding into the foreground, but his stream of conscience doesn’t break as he gets excited about creating a call sign.
New Guy's Background Post wrote: Emblazoned on the right side of the chest was the image. ‘D347H’.
Thorn looks down at the fellow's chest and frowns a bit, "I think we have a couple issues here ... First, just because something has a label does not make that label accurate ... If I woke up and found that some fool had written 'Human' on my chest, it would not make me human ... I saw Northblade walking around here last month with a Mug that said ~~World's Greatest Lover~~ on it, and I seriously find the claim suspect, whether the Mug was referring to Northblade or to itself. Second you seem to be assuming literacy as a standard. It isn't in a society like this. Not even in all the languages one speaks ... I speak 4 languages, and I cannot read in all of them. The fact you don't know that is ... very weird. It shows a serious lack of understanding of where you are. Third. I hate to break this to you D-3-4-7-H is not the correct spelling for the word Death, at least not in American ... sooooo there is also that. I mean you could go get the paint re-done, but ... well I just thought you should know." The Knight sounds less threatening and kind of embarrassed to be explaining these points. "For call-signs? Yes we have them, but even then I have multiple identifiers. So most folks call me Thorn or Sir Thorn as shortened versions of my overall name. In the field, I am the Dealer, because our callsigns are typically related to Playing Cards, and you do not want something lengthy. For you? I dunno, does the name Ganut mean anything to you? or Gaunt?"

He shifts and asks the fellow a few questions to which the Borg replies:
Ethan Gaunt wrote: Tue Jan 31, 2023 8:09 pm“Now a quiz. Is it customary to greet new acquaintances with so many activities? If so I am delighted because this is fun.” He continues.
“‘How do you kill a Werewolf’. I am going to go with disintegration. That is my go to with every creature. It has not failed me yet. ‘What are the powers of a Vampire?' Excellent question! African or European?" He inquires.
"Upon meeting someone it is not uncommon to ask a series of questions to get to know more about them, though calling it a quiz may not always be accurate. You ignored my question about explosives, so I am going to theorize no knowledge there ... Disintegration of a werewolf? Werewolves are supernatural creatures and specifically ones which cannot sustain injury through most conventional means, including disintegration via particle beam unless you have something infused or imbued by magic. Silver is the traditional material of choice for infliction of lethal wounds on a werebeast ... and I am not sure if the origin of the Vampire is significant to powers ... I suppose the ones I have fought to date have all been from Lone Star or Old Mexico south of the Rio Grande river ... Hmmm, I had not really thought about that."

Thorn shrugs at the small Borg and shakes his head, ***Ok, so he ignored the entire comment about labels not being absolute, and fixated on the story about the Cup ... He's an idiot.*** The Tokanii ponders the borg's queries about werewolves, vampires and computer operations blankly, "Usually, if most of a word is wrong, then it is a different word or misspelled. If I had a werewolf here, it would not be for you to experiment on. This is not the Coalition States. Nor am I interested in helping you study vampires ... and I don't do much with computers. If there's a computer problem, I contact our specialist and let him figure it out."

**Ok ... there's a difference between New to Merctown (so he doesn't know who we are), New to Rifts Earth (so one would lack understanding of local politics and history, like whether the average person can read), and New to being in a physical body and wanting folks to acknowledge your being an eternal force within the universe? ... I guess I can't tell if he's delusional or an idiot. I don't have the patience to coddle him. Like he seems to think it was ok to just randomly kill people who helped him [did his repairs] ... I might not have enough context but it feels as if all he cares about is a body-count, he's going to BE a huge source of trouble. Like if we have to clean up and justify a dumbass new borg-member walking through the Warrens killing random people because he thinks he is Death ... the Defenders are going to run us out of town.**

With a sigh Thorn raises a hand large enough to palm the Borg's skull in its entirety and begins to rub his own temples, "Look, whether you think we are the group you want or not, you seem to lack some kind of fundamental background, and I am not sure you would be a good fit for our needs. You speak American fine, but you seem to lack information on the area or some understanding on the social ramifications of your statements. I cannot yet tell if that is intentional. I guess ... leave me the info on where you are staying, and when the others get back ... if they are interested because they need a Borg or something they may reach out to discuss joining."

OOC: Sorry, kind of out of ideas for this vein and don't want to overstep. I think we may need GM/AGM or something to trigger for other Spooks.

Find some chains and tie him down. Then wait for me to arrive.” Then, the shifter settles his gaze on Ethan. ”Death, eh? Are you here in an… official capacity?” He looks the ‘bot up and down and one eyebrow raises.

Once Vheld is assured that Ethan is not there to kill them all, he’ll go back to his original thought. With a grunt and a nod, he’ll leave Lahz to handle some business while he heads inside and upstairs to his quarters. There, in the sub-room where he conducts his summonings and other rituals, he will turn his full attention upon Gemini. If the minions were able to locate something sufficiently strong to tie him down, Vheld will inspect the work and nod once he’s satisfied that Gemini won’t be able to escape. He will also make sure the man is totally disarmed one more time. Before he begins, Vheld turns to Sil. She doesn’t need to see this. And aloud, he says in a surprisingly gentle voice ”Go wait for me downstairs. I’ll be there soon.” While Sil may have a bad feeling about this, she does as her master orders and heads to the common area to wait for him.

Then, back to Gemini. First, Vheld addresses the entity possessing the ex-general. ”One, release him completely. I don’t think you’ll want to experience his next few minutes. You and Two may watch, but stand ready to retake control if he gets loose, tries to kill himself, or pulls some other sort of stunt. The rest of you” he turns to Skarrah, Bakir, and Birga, and pulls his whip out of his backpack before energizing it ((-20 PPE)) and handing it to one of them ”Use this. Lash him as many times as you want, and then each of you may take one limb. Whoever inflicts the most pain may take one eye as well. You are disqualified if you kill him. Skarrah, make sure we’ve gotten any and all useful information out of him, and then One you are to mute him.” No point in getting a headache. ”But first…” he addresses Gemini once he’s sure that the man has regained his senses. ”I made you a promise, Gemini. I don’t take kindly to sneak attacks from genocidal lunatics, and I don’t buy this ‘renegade’ bullshit for a minute. So you’re going to take my message to the next genocidal lunatic who’s thinking about messing with MercTown, and remind them that we’ve stayed out of the Coalition’s way for quite a few years now, and we’d like to keep it that way. We didn’t get involved in your little separatist conflict down south despite ample provocation, but I can assure you that I am leaving a great many options on the table. Begin.” He nods to his minions.

The less said about what happens next, the better. Vheld will watch the torture impassively, none too thrilled with himself but convinced of the necessity of his actions. The last thing we need is more long-range missiles pelting MercTown. He will stand ready to use heal wounds to deal with any blood loss, and once Gemini is unconscious he will order One to retake possession and keep the man under. Leaving most of his minions to stand guard, Vheld will take Sil and pop over to the collegiate, pull as much PPE from it as he can as quickly as he can, and then hurry back to the Haunt and to Gemini. Before he sends the man on his way, he will check in with Lahz ”I’m going to get rid of the prisoner, unless we have anything else for him.” Assuming the answer is no, Vheld will nod and retreat to his room. There, he will open a small rift to the nearest Coalition base with which he is familiar, order One to once again release Gemini, and have his minions toss the man through. Vheld will then promptly close the rift with a sigh. To his minions, he says ”Go to the basement and take a break. No mischief.” The shifter will then retire to his bedroom and curl up with Sil. Sustained or no, it has been a long couple of days and Vheld is ready for some rest.

As the crew returns to the Haunt, Ronan is admittedly looking forward to washing his hands of the Coalition States for the time being. Fanatical pricks. Ronan shakes his head as they arrive in the Haunt, Ronan opting to carry his and Mierin's gear up to the 5th floor as she goes off and does her own thing. She could use a wind down after that too, maybe some good steaks are in order. Ronan muses, thinking it's about time to see if he can grill as good on this planet as he can back on Fleet. Might need to learn how to cook here, but it'll be worth it. He admits to himself.

On his way up and down the Haunt, Ronan notices Lahz peering at the cloaked figure with a Halberd outside. He'll walk behind the elf and clasp him on the shoulder. "'Sup? Got a lurker we need to deal with?" Ronan asks, genuinely ready to go scrap some overattentive passerby. Then the newcomer introduces themselves over the intercom and Ronan nods. "Death? Huh, well, anyone just calling themselves Death has to be able to at least back it up a little bit, right?" Ronan muses as Vheld orders hius demons to carry Gemini to the shifters room. "Ah, you got this right? I wanna go twist that skullhead into a pretzel. Literally. Call me if you need help with Death" Ronan says, emphasizing the name Death. He leaves before Vheld does likely and doesn't wait to meet this new Death, instead taunting Gemini.

"Hey, Ghostie, make sure he can hear me." Ronan says to the ghost possessing Gemini before continuing "You had to know that this wouldn't end well for you." Ronan says to the blindfolded, restrained and muted man. "And now, we have literally nothing better to do..." Ronan cheekly quips, leaning in towards Gemini "Except deal with you the same way you tried dealing with us, but we'll finish it." He finishes, his voice not hiding the smile.

When they get to the room, as the minions are looking to tie him down, Ronan holds up his hands. "I got it, fellas." And stomps his foot lightly (though enough to be heard) and Ronan begins encasing Gemini's hands and feet, together, in Silver so the General has one hand on either food and both are fully encased in a plate on the ground, preventing him from moving or even falling over. Ronan smiles at the uncomfortable position Gemini is in and nods to the demons to continue what they were doing. "Stay away from the plate." Ronan warns the demons with a nod (who may have some irritation with Silver). Ronan then waits for Vheld to dish out his minions orders and address Gemini.

Huh, He has an unusual attachment to this town. It's quaint I guess but not that great. Meh, whatever. Home is home. Ronan shrugs off Vheld's defensive nature of Merctown. Ronan will drop the silver restraints upon request or leave them and instead will watch the demons inflict their own versions of torture on the human. Ronan winces a couple times but is more or less unimpressed. Cliche at best, I expected more but now I can't hang him by his own limb. Ronan thinks and if he notices any of the demons look at him as he thinks that, he'll wink at them.

Once the demons are done, Ronan stands and before the brutalized man and kneels in front of him, placing a hand on Gemini's shoulder. "We're not done yet. I didn't forget that stunt you pulled with those shape shifters. Consider this payback." Ronan says with a smile, his goggles up so his silver eyes are visible. Ronan rips off whatever clothing is over Gemini's shoulder that still remains and clasps his shoulder. "Don't choke yourself." He grins with a quip and begins to mold Gemini's flesh and stretching it. Gemini can watch in muted, one-eyed horror as Ronan is stretching the skin from his shoulder into a long flesh like rope. Ronan wraps the flesh-rope around Gemini's neck and tightens it like a constrictor, crushing his voice box but not his entire throat (hopefully) before standing and looking at Vheld and the demons with a shrug. "After all that, he likely still deserved worse."

Once Vheld leaves to the Collegiate, Ronan is done with Gemini and content to leave his fate in Vheld's hands, instead returning to this newcomer. Ronan returns to Lahz (likely half an hour or so later) and Death to catch up.

Considering Lahz's rolls and knowledge, it is obvious that this is a Naruni Repo Bot in in a ridiculous outfit, acting completely out of character. You do see just just below his robes hood on his chest is the designation: D347H.
.
"Greetings Field-team leader. I seek avatars to assist me in reaping souls. I have seemingly grown slow in this form. So many souls to reap and I am currently limited by this form. A man by the name of Fixer informed me that your band of warriors carry a reputation for sending others to the great beyond in large numbers. I believe your team is capable of assisting me in the completion of my duties. This is why I seek an audience. For me Death is like Gravity, the forces of the universe draw me towards it. You will have to change nothing of your normal lives. Where you go will be where I am meant to be and they will be the souls I am obligated to take. The jobs that come to your team organically will be the universe sending us where we need to go. I do not ask for compansation, only that you assist me in any basic needs like mending and repairs, in return I give you a meaningful universal purpose and a friendship with the chance to assist one of the most primordial of the universe's purposes."
Lahz's brow furrows at the armored figure in front of him and offers a skeptical inquiry, "To assist you? So you want to hire us? ... Wait wait wait ... You 'don't ask for compensation' but you want us to assist you??? ... You are not looking to hire use You want a freaking Job." The Elf shakes his head noncommittally, *This guy isn't looking to hire, he wants us to cover his expenses? Why isn't he getting his mending and repairs over at Naruni?? He sounds like he thinks we are just drifting around hoping for purpose. Kind of a presumptuous and rude little assumption ... what did Dad used to say bout assumptions> They begin with an ass, ...* "Some of us have plenty of purpose ... A wise person would step lightly when laying that on, and ... Why wouldn't you be going to Naruni for repairs? They are very proprietary about having their gear altered, for a Repo-Bot like you, it feels like they would give push back on outside repair and modification ..." adds Lahz.

Ronan heads back down in a far more relaxed manner now that Gemini has been dealt with. Glad that's over with. Maybe now I can explore Merctown without being attacked randomly. Not that it REALLY bothers me... Ronan muses, nodding mildly with the last part. I love good fights. He adds with a smile as he arrives back at the entrance where Lahz is greeting the newcomer.

"Cool looking 'borg. Paintjob's not too scratched." Ronan says, taking off his goggles and eyeing up the visible parts of Ethan's hardware. "What are you, on the run or something?" Ronan asks semi rhetorically (though if Ethan answers, Ronan lets him). He looks to Lahz with a shrug without otherwise waiting for an answer. "Brings a lot of firepower, if not for a lack of subtly." Ronan offers to Lahz. Ronan pauses a moment. "I got this."

Ronan steps towards Ethan and nods his head up, kicking his right foot and building a silver platform between them at chest level. Ronan puts his right arm up and sets his elbow on the table and taps the silver table with his left hand, right palm open. "Let's see what you got." Ronan offers, attempting to gauge Ethan's strength. Let's see how he reacts to this. Not really expecting a bot to give me much fight but I'm curious if he can even get it.

To be clear I have no desire to hire you. I am simply offering my aid on whatever endeavours you would normally choose to undertake so that the innumerable souls that your team assists in shuffling off their mortal coil can be quickly sent to the underworld for judgement."
Lahz suppresses the urge to shoot the fellow that just decided to tell him whatever purpose Lahz had found in his life was meaningless but his voice is quietly firm in response, "I ... suppose this is a matter of opinion, but I caution you that telling someone you just met that whatever purpose they have found in life is meaningless ... that is rude. Opinions can vary but that is my position and I have said it twice now. If you say my life lacks purpose or meaning, or any other variation again, I am going to know you are being rude intentionally ... You may want to think about how you want to phrase a response, but since opinions can vary and you are unlikely to convince me, you may just want to move on to something else ... Next, We are not in the habit of killing innumerable souls, that shit is a Coalition approach. We kill the worst bad folks to prevent wholesale killing of innumerable souls. One could almost say we try and kill the minimum number that is necessary for the job to be completed. If you were told that we kill indiscriminately, this will serve as a correction, we do not. We do not handle underworld judgments. I do not think we particularly care if a post-death judgment process is quick. To be clear right now, I have no desire to hire You either, and we have not sought your aid. I am not sure why Fixer sent you to us. Fixer sends us jobs, or potential new members. You are not the former. If you are supposed to be a potential new member ... and your first and only option for resolution is lethal force and you are sooooo enthralled by killing that just want to be the best killer you can be with the highest body-count, you probably are not going to fit in here ... Lahz offers a shrug and opens his palms in a non-threatening ~~what-can-ya-do~~ manner while thinking, **I suppose I am also pretty damn glad Ronan is standing here to handle removal, because a full sized Borg? That would be a pretty big dent in my morning. Ray probably gets banged up all to hell too if he gets crazy ... I mean I could disable flight systems then TK him up 1000ft and drop him 10 or 12 times ... let the ground beat him to Death ... who knows maybe he'd like that. Hmmmmm ... Or maybe ... I think I have 1 charge left on my Time-Lapse thingy from Vheld???? ... Maybe just stop time and TK drop him in the lake over across the street then get the hell inside ... **

Absent, something warranting combat, the Psi-Tech listens calmly for a response and observes Ronan's ritual 'contest' then asks, "So ... No response on why you wouldn't be going to Naruni for repairs? You don't deny being one of their Repo-Bots right? So wouldn't bringing you in just be kicking off a spiral of trouble? Because again it feels like they would push back on the Spooks having a Repo-Bot, as well as any outside repair and modification ... I mean, I am considering heading there myself to get some touch-ups done on this armor, they do quality work."

Ronan is genuinely pleased so far and clasps the borgs hand. "Full force. I'm no push over." Ronan says and nods with Ethan (who nods along hopefully) and pauses. "On three. One. Two." Ethan feels Ronan's hand grip just a little tighter than a human should. "Three." Ethan starts at 50% expecting to move the humanoid only to see Ronan not move at all. Ronan smirks, "I said three." And Ronan starts slowly pushing Ethan back as Ethan kicks it up to full gear, bringing the arms back to near center. Ronan nods. "Not bad. Stronger than any borg I've ever seen." Ronan says, looking back at Lahz before turning to Ethan and nodding. "This is my 20%" Ronan says cockily as he quickly slams Ethan's hand against the silver table and nodding. "Maybe 25." Ronan says with a smirk and nod towards Ethan. He looks back to Lahz. "Well, it's tough at least." Ronan says and steps back, the silver table melting into nothing back into the floor.

"Your ball." He shrugs to Lahz and then he watches Lahz and Ethan go rounds, barely taking breathes between each other as they speak and tell stories. Wow. I wish I could record this. This is more fun than my arm wrestling. Story time. I wonder how many times he'll say Elf before Lahz says his name or gets pissed. I wonder if this robot has a name other than Death, I mean, good radio callsign sure, weird name. Ronan blinks. "Man, you both talk a lot. You'll be awesome friends. That is, if you ever introduce yourselves." Ronan sighs, his right hand rubbing his head.

"Maybe a 'Hi, I'm Ronan' Or well, Death, I guess. Is that your callsign or your name?" Ronan says tauntingly to both with a smile, turning to Ethan with the last one. When Lahz inevitably shoots him a dirty look, Ronan smiles. "What?"

“Why would I have a name plate that says Death if I wasn’t Death. It is literally part of my body.“
"Well, I don't know. I kinda read D347H. Like, Delta Three Four Seven Hotel. Serial Number?" Ronan questions, looking to Lahz then to D347H. "A callsign is so that any evidence you might leave behind is harder to track back to you specifically. Like Rook. Rook means nothing to anyone but among the team here it means someone. Who? Who knows, the team, no one else. That's a callsign." Ronan explains. Like taking the training wheels off some of the fleet's new blood, I wonder how he feels about metaphors... He pauses and thinks a moment, smirking.
D347H wrote:“So Ronan and Unnamed Elf, can I count on your votes to join the Spook Squad? Will you be my Avatars for this planet?”
Ronan smiles. "Gotta beat me in arm wrestling before I commit to something like that." Ronan jests. "So, what, you looking for a new home then? Work? Are you a mercenary borg or what? "

**... and I would agree with that Ronan, but this Borg ... him maybe no read so good ... **

Lahz shakes his head a bit at the exchange between the Borg-applicant [Gaunt/Death], and Ronan, *I am Death because I was labelled Death ... What if this guy wakes up tomorrow and someone has written F-I-S-H in slightly larger letters? ... Is he going to go jump in a Lake? ... He seems high maintenance ... It would be funny if he had other labels he just cannot see.* With a yawn, the Psi-Tech casts a questioning glance to Ronan then looks back at Borg-applicant [Gaunt/Death], "You came over here to ask for a job. You didn't get my name from Fixer? ... I am Lahz."

OOC: BTW, I totally thought I had put Lahz's name in somewhere before but, this might be the easiest fix.

"It feels like you might not do much research fella, do you know what an Avatar is? I may not be the most learned of folks in this City, but an Avatar commonly refers to a lesser version, so No, I do not think we will become lesser versions of a Borg that thinks it is Death because it woke up with the label. That would make us all pretty stupid ..." and thinks *...instead of just you ... who apparently cannot even read the label ... this is like having a 1000-pound-toddler-with-a-plasma-cannon ... this seems like a bad idea.* The whole 'I am Death because I am labelled' thing reminds the Elf of a scene from an old Holo-Vid ...

Absently the Psi-Tech pats the side of the vehicle knocking a couple times, "Ray? Go ahead and Park inside, then come on back." He then turns back to Ronan and the Borg-applicant [Gaunt/Death], "Did you say you had spoken to Sir Thorn before?"

Lahz shakes his head quietly, "Sir Thorn was a founding member of the Spook Squad. His recommendations carry weight. Significant weight. However, the Spook Squad does not run decisions on membership as a Democracy. We are more of a semi-benevolent dictatorship. I am field-team leader, I decide who is a member. So, the issue is pretty clear for me. If you cannot communicate clearly with me, then that just sounds like it is going to be a continuous headache for me. You are correct, joining the Spooks would offer you plenty of expansion in capabilities, but I am not in need of headaches ... "

He pauses for a moment and ponders, **Why am I bothering? If this guy cannot get it out of his head that he is an incarnation of Death ... which eventually hits all living things ... He stops and looks up into the eyes of the Applicant-Borg, "As far as I can tell, the 'opportunity' to assist a universal constant by not making any changes is not a thing or benefit. It does not offset the potential disruption of a new team member who seems to need every single item in every conversation explained or argued. The 'I cannot join the Hurricane, the Tornado, or the Earthquake on mission' argument illustrates the disconnect ... It might be nice to have a Borg around, we lost a couple folks recently, but I cannot tell if you just are too unstable and present a danger, or don't understand what is going on ... "

With a sinking feeling in his gut the Psi-Tech rubs his temples, **Do I just send him away? Do I let him on and put Ronan on babysitting duty? ... Like with someone this delusional, having a member walk through town he could cause all sorts of shitstorm trouble for us ... Speak up dumbass. Show me you understand and can adjust. He's a Borg, so my ability to diagnose what's wrong with him is pretty limited to mechanical ... not his fucking mind. Do I just have Thorn come down and read his freaking thoughts???**

With consternation he looks over to Ronan, "Any thoughts? Shall we just have a psychic do a brain-dive? One of Deuce's minions or Sir Thorn?"

“And what is your domain, if that is not too personal?”
Ronan blinks at the question. Domain? Shit. I never paid attention to any the Fleet Services. Only remember a few of them.. Atlas, Inanna... Inanna was a warrior goddess... Ronan recalls his own gods that have long failed him. Ronan is thankful the conversation is shifted and he doesn't feel the need to answer.
"Than fate put me in from of a mirror where I saw this plate, where my glorious purpose became clear. Now what I want is simple, to fulfill that glorious purpose.”
Ronan nods along as D347H talks. He's got the zealotry down. Ronan muses with a light smirk. He then goes back to listening to Lahz and D347H go rounds for a minute. Ronan listens to Lahz essentially dissect the borg with a soft chuckle. Damn, sure am glad I missed this side of Lahz. He's using a lot of words that, if I didn't know him, might be fighting words. Ronan muses with a smile to himself, completely in jest. He's brought back by Lahz finally addressing him.
"Any thoughts? Shall we just have a psychic do a brain-dive? One of Deuce's minions or Sir Thorn?"
Ronan shrugs. "You're not wrong. Seems to be a communication issue, maybe a circuit blew?" Ronan says with a grin to Lahz. "You're call. The brain-diving stuff is a bit above my paygrade. Would say use Thorne before one of the ghouls." Ronan affirms Lahz's suggestion, crossing his arms.

He looks to D347H with arms still crossed and nods his head. "Here's the trick, we're all a force in our own right, and we make enemies. Hell, when I first landed here I pissed off some old god." Ronan says, chuckling. "Though I did make it slap itself which was worth it." Ronan adds nonchalantly before shaking his head. "Point is, we make big enemies and take big targets. Won't be doing that if we can't trust the ones next to us. Soldiers motto, sure, but serves just as well in a Merc Outfit." Ronan says, holding up one hand.

"So. We further each others goals and fuck up anyone who gets in our way. If you're good with that then I'm sure we can figure something out." Ronan offers then looks to Lahz.

"Deuce is meditating or something right now, I think, so Thorne might be our best bet for that brain dive." Ronan suggests to Lahz.

Wayne slowly makes his way to the Haunt through the portal provided by Vheld. His armor looking slightly worse for wear, the swordsman is happy to finally see the front door of his new home. He's even happy to see Sir Thorn-In-My-Side. "Hey big guy. No sparring today. Just killed a giant demon thing and I'm taking a fucking shower and drinking a beer."

He sees the new guy chatting with Sir Thorn and gives him the once over. Obviously a new recruit. The more the merrier. Could have used more firepower against that eldritch bastard. "Sir Thorn, do we have some new blood here?" Turning to the new guy, he says "I'm Sir Northblade. Who are you and what do you bring to the table?"

Ethan Gaunt wrote: Sun Feb 26, 2023 3:43 pmAs you enter his mind, there is maelstrom of contained chaos, and your can tell that it is being held together by everything his SuperEgo can muster, his sense of self is there, as if his basic nature was coming through but much of who he is seems to be missing, like a puzzle, pieces crucial to making this person who he is is incomplete.

You start moving backward through his memories, linear and scarce. Most people’s memories are so full but his seem to be so few. You see him arriving at the Haunt, then you see him in the Cafe talking to Fixer, his entry into MercTown. This was preceded by a long journey, from the New West, with his companion Cerberus. You see him in a seedy cyberneticist shop. As rips the cyberneticist’s head off his shoulders, apparently after Ethan was asked to dispose of a body of a young girl. He seemed to fly into a rage. After that a robotic dog walks up to Ethan and nuzzles him. Now you see the cyberneticist repairing his head enclosure. A robotic dog from before approaching cautiously as the man strikes it and tells it to leave. You see the Ethan wake up while the cyberneticist is repairing him. He is disoriented he scrambles to a mirror enthralled for a moment. He then steps away.

Now before you is a wall, it has a large hole from which pour fragments of memory. You can see there is much on the other side and approach it cautiously. Delving deeper you find everything.

You see a young man no more than 24 working on Robotic limbs. He is building them to be better and stronger, outside the window you see Chi-Town. Then you see his wife open the door and come in holding their daughter. “Clara wanted to see you.” He take the baby in his arms. “How is daddy’s precious angel? You are my whole world now.” Suddenly you feel a presence next you you. You turn and see the metal form of Ethan. He is staring at the man and the girl. ”That’s….That’s me….was me. That was Clara, my daughter. This was before…….”You see him wince and shudder suddenly you see Ethan sitting at the foot of a hospital bed. A girl of no more than 10 lies sleeping. A doctor comes in, “We got enough meds to stop the seizures but we will have to keep her out. We thought Bisecting the brain would bring an end to the abnormal activity, and it does 99.9% of the time. This just wasn’t one of those times. We will adjust her meds and keep her as seizure free as possible. Maybe we will have the tech one day to pinpoint and isolate aberrant areas and allow the normal ones to flourish.”

While in Chi-Town he continues his work. You see him watch soldiers and children receive his non military cybernetic prostheses. You see a smile on his face as people get parts of their lives returned the thought lost. You see nights where he stays up holding his daughter through seizure after seizure. In his spare time you see him researching brains and trying to develop a methods to create some kind of cybernetic blocking mechanism. “I loved Clara so much. I would have given anything to stop her seizures. But there was something I was missing. Then I got a break.”

You see a Naruni Repot Bot on a stretcher its head missing. A soldier says “Dr. Gaunt we want you to review this.” Gaunt walk’s over looks at it and says “Intriguing.” As he reviews the torso. He finds something lodged in the gears of the neck remnants. He begins studying it. His review indicates indications of brain matter. “What’s this? The Repo Bots are Conversion Borgs. But how? They act as robots not cyborgs. Unfeeling and cold. They are merciless. How do they keep a brain intact but keep everything, that makes the beings themselves, suppressed. If they can shut down memory and the frontal lobe, they are isolating parts of the brain and closing them off to the rest of the brain. The Naruni have tech that does what I am looking for.

Next you see Ethan his wife and Clara moving. They arrive in MercTown. He rents a small home. Takes up work repairing computers. He makes some inquiries with one of the Naruni merchants. Asks if in their dealings with other people, if they ever came across a device that would d what he was looking for. The answer was of course no. He remains calm but is infuriated. How dare they hold on to tech that could literally change lives for the better. Next you see him at a computer repeatedly attempting to unencrypt a password to enter a system. He finally gets the right one. As a connection is made. The computer shuts down. Ethan strikes it a couple of times. “What the Hell, I had it.” The lights go out. “What is going on?” He walks out of his office into the living room.

The door slams open and a seven foot black bot stands in the doorway then enters. Behind him is a creature he just knows is a Naruni. “ Mr. Gaunt, it seems you didn’t like my answer. What made you think you could enter our systems and us not know about it. You see Mr. Gaunt, you just attempted to steal Naruni proprietary secrets. Do you know what our punishment is for that. Hmm do you?” “Death” says Ethan. But if we kill you your family will have so many questions and frankly we don’t need that. Kill the woman and the girl, quietly. Make sure the clean up team leaves the house spotless and take some clothes and bags to make it look like they left town. Ethan lunges at the Naruni and strikes him across the face. “You can’t kill them, they are innocent.” The Naruni responds, “No Mr. Gaunt they are collateral damage to your recklessness. You had the audacity to strike me. Death is too good for you. I think you should get first hand experience with tech you desired the take. Sedate him and bring him with us. The bot extends a needle into his neck and falls limp.”

“I don’t remember this but watching this, I feel like it happened.” These memories I can feel them now. I just don’t remember things I knew and I just” His voice begins to tremble as he seems to realize something “he said go kill the woman and the girl.” He runs into the girls bedroom to only darkness. “Noooo what happened did they kill her oh god, my wife he runs into another room finding the same only blackness.” He falls to his knees and screams “Nooo what happened, they’re dead aren’t they? They are dead. Clara, no, no, no.…this can’t be! She was my everything . I was so close to a solution how could I fail her. I got her killed. I killed her. I killed my wife…. He falls to his knees. This is how I became this thing.”

Outside in the real world after a few seconds you see Ethan collapse. He is is seemingly wracked with pain. He keep saying, ”I’m sorry Clara’. After a few minutes he stops and he looks to the sky. “I killed everyone I loved. Maybe I am Death, I don’t want to be death any more.” He goes into the fetal position. If he had tears you feel he would be crying.

After a while (10-15 minutes(?)) Thorn clears his throat as an indicator he is finished, "Seems he was a human to start. Worked for the CS. Came here to steal from Naruni. They caught him ... Not sure why they would opt to put him into one of these." Thorn offers another yawn that would send shivers down the spines of many, then shrugs at Lahz and Ronan, "The name Gaunt comes up a few times."

The Cyberknight will mentally pop off a telepathic summary to Lahz, roll his head around on his neck issuing an audible crackling sound then rise to leave, "Call me if you need me," and head back up the stairs.

While Spooks dig into the new visitor, a knock is heard at the door of HQ.

Assuming someone answers it, a young human courier is seen looking around nervously. "I, I, I. I am looking for the Spook Squad. An ur, ur, urgent message." he stammers, handing a small sealed package to whomever opens the door.

IF someone opens the package, a small data chip inside can be retrieved. It is compatible with most computers. If placed into a computer (or Lahz probes its contents) a simple video message is played. A stocky man with curly, salt and pepper hair can be seen inside a comfortable room with plush leather chairs. "My name is Brewster Brolock. I have an acquaintance who is in dire need of assistance. The job in question is difficult and time is of the essence. The job pays ten million credits, 10% up front and the balance upon completion. If you are interested, coming this evening at 8pm to the Briar Room in the Pyramid Emporium. I hope to see you then."

And with that the message ends.

Ronan'll fist-bump Wayne when the masked weirdo walks in with a head nod (Ronan is extra sure his fist bump doesn't shatter Wayne's arm) and then watches the brain diving unfold with... unease. I... don't like that. At all. Oof. Crazy abilities. Ronan thinks, remembering to the resident psionic on his old team with a smile.

When Thorne reveals the truth about Ethan, Ronan's mouth visibly drops. "Woah, what the absolute... wow that's downright sick. I mean, effective, but sick. Wow." Ronan admits, just thinking about it internally. I mean, the brain's supposed to be hella powerful right, a computerized brain? That's gotta be like... enough to make my head hurt. Ronan sighs and shakes his head.

Ronan steps forward and looks to Lahz. "Boss, think this might actually work out. That borg'll have a lot of built up rage to fuel it. Chop off the alien bits, make it look different, I'm sure I could rip some pieces off." Ronan offers in complete jest before stepping again, this time closer to Ethan.

"Well, now we all know you are officially screwed. Pfft, who isn't. Welcome to the club that gives the Universe the Middle Finger. So, I like Gaunt better, yeah? Let's go with that." Ronan offers a hand shake.

Then the knock is heard. "I got it, Lahz can give final yay nays on the 'borg that just got violated." Ronan quips, moving to the front door.
"I, I, I. I am looking for the Spook Squad. An ur, ur, urgent message."
A burly, bearded man wearing goggles, sporting a core leather ensemble complete with a emblemed white wolf image on the back of it. Ronan looks down at the young human courier who is likely much shorter and has stifles a grunt. Ronan nods. "I got it kid, thanks. Here." Ronan gives the kid a 100cr credstick as he undoubtedly scurries off. Ronan'll look at the package and shrug, standing in the doorway of the Haunt and sighing. "Whatever. Better not be a bomb." Ronan mutters to no one and opens the package. Ronan is pleasently surprised to find yet another datastick. Another one. Mysterious. Ronan chuckles to himself at this planet's rather primitive ways of communication. Ronan'll slot the datastick into his personal computer he keeps folded in his jacket and play the message. Better this POS gets fried than some HT computer Lahz has, or one of those idiots minds. Ronan muses as it loads.

Ronan rewinds the message a couple times and shrugs. "O-Okay. ACE!" Ronan shouts from the doorway and shows Lahz and anyone else at the front the message. Ronan nods to the borg. "Want me to go and take the borg with me? See how he does? I won't say yes without talking to folks first, unless we want to crash the joint?" Ronan says with a grin.

The Psi-Tech muses a bit at the summary afforded by Sir Thorn about the Borg-Applicant's background, **A Cyber Doc or Body fixer or something providing for the CS.** Lahz's own thoughts begin to smolder a bit with his own long-simmering hatred of the Coalition States, **I'm a parent, I can understand trying to acquire tech to help your kid out, but the self-righteous crap about being mad that Naruni would withhold their tech is kind of disingenuous isn't it??? ... Like if the CS has actively indicated the Naruni are a threat, to kill Naruni on-sight, and banned all Naruni products ... it is kind of moronic to get mad at Naruni for not altruistically sharing their tech with the openly hostile CS. It's alot of feeling entitled ... for someone who helped those who would and did cave in Kaiya's skull with a boot ... No warning from Thorn that he's a lunatic who has a bunch of mass-murders rolling around his brain though ... **

Lahz turns to look the fellow over, **Ok, so a CS Doctor, who is trapped in an ultra-high-end Naruni borg? Gaunt? Pragmatic overview. I guess he cannot go back to the CS, at least until he had a new body actually cloned or something ... anything he said would probably be disregarded. Likewise Naruni probably not super interested in his side of things ... Thorn did not find anything about having orders to infiltrate the Spooks or anything ... I didn't get a timeline from the big guy, cannot tell how long he has been a Borg. Assuming this wasn't a re-purposed power plant, I might be able to tell based off of ... No, focus ... doesn't really matter ... **
Ronan wrote:... "Woah, what the absolute... wow that's downright sick. I mean, effective, but sick. Wow." Ronan admits, just thinking about it internally. ...
An impassive Lahz glances to Ronan and Northblade for any overt objections. If there are none Lahz rises and nods curtly at the Borg, "We are literally arriving back home after a CS attempt on our lives here Gaunt. So, if you were part of yet another attempt to weasel in here and hit us from a weird angle, I want you to understand ... being a borg with an alien parts-manufacturer is not the worst case scenario. Betrayal would be very poorly received. You can consider yourself onboard provisionally, by the barest margin ... and that causing trouble within the group, or bringing it in from outside through foolish actions, will result in an ending of your provisional membership."

When Ronan pops up to get the door and opens the package without much examination the Psi-Tech stifles a wince, **Bricks ... folks who cannot be easily damaged, they never check shit carefully. Someday I am going to do a full lecture on this.** He will however ask about the job message and have it replayed (the Psi-Tech will image-capture with his Drone-Control Gauntlet's video camera) and listen to Ronan propose that he might go alone to evaluate the job with the new guy. "I don't think so Rook. But we have some choices to make ..."

**New guy's frakking unstable as hell. I certainly don't want him launching into a Death-embodiment tirade in front of a potential client. I would go with Rook ... but do we wait for an appointed place and time? This guy sent an image ... same as Gemini, and we can track him same way. Or just observe him wherever he is ...** ponders Lahz (i.e. -- Psionic Seeking (Rifter 25, 6 ISP, 1 Mile/L, 5 Min/L, 46% +5%/L (Current 91%)), or Remote Viewing (10 ISP, 4d6+12 Seconds)).

On his gauntlet's holovid, Lahz plays back the message without sound until he finds a good image to pause and examine this Brewster Brolock [stocky man with curly, salt and pepper hair [who] can be seen inside a comfortable room with plush leather chairs].

Lahz then uses Psionic Seeking (Rifter 25, -6 ISP, 10 Mile, 50.00 Min, Current 91%): 1d100: [15] = 15 ) ... to see if this Brewster Brolock fellow is even in town/in-range (within a 10 mile radius).

**Do we let this Brolock guy pick a place and time? ... Hmmm ... Do we think it's a trick to draw us out of the Haunt? We have already shown we can defend like hell from here. Is that it? Do they want to hit the Haunt? Or hit us away from a good location? ... Nah, it's still in Merctown, and in the Mystic Quarter ... Seems like a bad place to bring us if they are hoping to get Vheld.**

Lahz looks at the Borg [Ethan] with quiet regard, **I hear a lot of not my fault in there. A lot of deflection ... It is what it is. But I am not going to have Naruni come knocking because of him walking around like a moron.** "Naruni has Tech at the very cutting edge of tech. If they have not tracked you here you probably have a damaged tracker somewhere in you. You need to do better than a cloak and a cover-story about being the embodiment of a Universal force as a disguise. You need Borg armor, or something like it ... and frankly we probably need a trustworthy Cyberdoc to remove tracking software or implants if they are in contact with anything made of ... meat. I handle Tech as well as any operator, but where the body meets machine ... not my area. I can probably do work on your limbs ... maybe the main torso here, but when we get to the spine and brain? I don't even know First Aid."

He looks to Ronan, "Rook? Get him a Room on the 4th Floor, please introduce him to the Others, and give him
-- Meet the Golems and Droids so they dont attack --
for Floors 1-6,"
then back to Gaunt, "Don't leave. You are within a mile of the largest Naruni outlet on the Planet. I'll pick up some armor to add as external protection and disguise ... but we do not need to draw heat without purpose." The Elf sighs to himself and rises, "I am going to get a shower. Then I will go out and do some shopping for some Disguise armor to install. If you need something, you may request a droid relay via radio."

Lahz will head upstairs trailing Ray, he stops at Vhelds door and takes his Talisman of Time Slip
Image

from Vheld out to give it to Kit the Droid to stand outside their Magus' Door with this recorded audio message: "Vheld, I did not want to disturb you. Two things. First, We have received a message asking about our availability for a job. The prospective employer wishes to meet in the Mystic Quarter at 8 PM at the Briar Room in the Pyramid Emporium. He gave the name Brewster Brolock, not sure if you know him or have any connection. You are of course welcome to attend, or have Kit relay any questions to me via radio. Secondly, this Talisman was extremely useful and I appreciate it. I have however used up the charges. If you can find the time please recharge at some point, it would be appreciated."

The Elf heads upstairs, grabs a lengthy hot shower, then collects Ray and comes back downstairs with his Northern Gun Certified Mechanical Engineer card.

He will load into Aurelia's Road King wearing his Arrow-Ride armor (but bringing the Roadrunner PA along). Lahz intends to see an operator about improving the Roadrunner's capabilities slightly because rolling around in something standard does not give the edge he wants, and then he also wants to find 2-3 sets of

If anyone mentions the mission, he'll say "I know a business owner in the pyramid. I'll see what info I can drudge up."

When Lahz mentions a shopping trip, Wayne's ears perk up. "If you don't mind the tagalong, I could use a thing or nine." Sir W. Northblade heads off to Northern Gun with Lahz.

Ronan nods and hands the package to Lahz, unconcerned with a passing grin as he continues in. He'll listen to Gaunt and Lahz continue their talks, though the soldier was far from listening as his own internal monologue kept him entertained. Wow they talk a lot. One likes to tell stories, one likes to read out technical manuals. Now we need someone to repeat whatever they hear on the radio and we're golden. Ronan muses to himself, making himself scoff.
Lahz wrote:"Rook? Get him a Room on the 4th Floor, please introduce him to the Others, and give him for Floors 1-6,"

Gaunt wrote:"I am wilfully subjugating myself to your command. Whatever you wish of me shall be so. Anything you purchase for me, I will reimburse you for as soon as I have the available funds. I have 1000 credits on this card that are yours to make a down payment if you will. As for the Cyber Doc I ask that you tell him to leave the inhibitor in place. What little I remember of the research, was that the Naruni did not create them with the intent of ever removing them. Until I can get some of my knowledge back I will need to leave it in place until I am sure there are no unintended consequences to its removal."
Ronan nods and turns to the Borg. "Okay, you're with me." Ronan says literally stops at the sight of maskless Wayne drinking a beer like a deer in headlights.
Zuzu wrote:"What? You thought I was going to keep that on forever? Missions only. This is the way."

"Damn, when did you steal my mug? Not right to do false advertising there." Ronan says, crossing his arms. "I'm more surprised you didn't bring ME a beer, TOO." Ronan says in jest and nods towards the next room. "Onto the tour." Ronan says and will take Wayne if Wayne offers to join and will then lead Ethan Gaunt through the Haunt.

Ronan stops at the doors to the basement. "The Haunt's Garage is down there but it's mostly a demon den for our resident mage's pets. He can introduce you to those things." Ronan says and points out the important rooms on the ground floor, then moves to the second floor. "Second Floor is like my second room, firing range, weights, sparring mat. Oh, See B.O.B. over there?" Ronan points to the most abused body dummy on agains the mat. "Don't mess with Bob. The other one is fair game though." Ronan says with a wave and continues to the third floor.

Ronan walks right to the pool table. "Arguably the only thing that matters on this floor but an uplink is in this room too." Ronan points to the MT Intranet Terminal. "No oil spills in the kitchen. Or wait, do alien borgs do oil?" Ronan ponders before continuing to the fourth floor. Ronan points to the three rooms. "Okay, that one is Wayne's, right?" He asks Wayne if he is there before pointing to the others. "Pick one and drop your gear. We've gotta couple security introductions to do as well." Ronan says "I'm on up 5th, so is Mierin. Vheld is up on 6th with Thorne. Lahz has all of the 7th cordoned off for spooky reasons." Ronan says and will then take him to the Stone Golems and the droids that meander around the haunt.

The courier nervously, but happily accepts the generous tip from Ronan, hops back on a small motorcycle and rides away.

Lahz shoot down Ronan initial attempt to go alone. He does however, seek out this Brewster Brolock, and can sense the individual in question within the range of Lahz's senses.

Living arrangements for Ethan are made, though doubt, reluctance and suspicion still hang heavy in the air.

Wayne's firm shift into a casual alter ego brings the tension down a couple notches and indicates he knows someone over at the Pyramid who might have some information.

In the immediate future, Lahz and others head for Northern Gun.

((I wasn't quite sure, but it sounded like Ronan and Ethan are not yet heading for the pyramid. For the meantime, post in the appropriate locations. It's been a few moons, but remember the >> location indicators, please and thank you.))

"Understood. Come Cerberus!!" ..."I don't know what the pet policy is, but he is a good dog that doesn't pee or poop, so I don't think you will have any issues with his presence."

Ronan looks to the mechanical dog and nods slowly. "Huh, cool. Well, Pet policy is pretty open as long as it's controlled. Cool looking mech one, probably easier to manage than a demon dog so, don't see any problem. He probably should stay in your room." Ronan offers.
"I am not sure training works for me. My skills are pre programmed. I do not believe practice improves my performance. Before becoming this 'thing' I was not savvy in the ways of combat. In fact I was a pacifist. Now that conscious mind and the programming are melding together I am discovering I am programmed as a killing machine. The thought that I, who was once a pacifist, am now capable of such ultra violence is intriguing, especially because I have yet to remember the skills and knowledge that once defined me. Did my skills make me a pacifist or did I pick to pursue them because of my pacifism? Having lost my wife and daughter, it would seem that my pacifism has waned. Now I have no issue with hurting others. In fact I believe I am looking forward to helping this team on their next mission. Is that growth, or regression...."
Ronan looks back at the borg and shakes his head. "I can tell you're a borg. Training isn't always about improvement, sometimes it can be about building habits and muscle memory, mechanical muscle memory. Sure, you're skilled as is and it's programmed. But is it programmed you raise your weapon left handed or right? Trigger well safety, muzzle safety. Training yourself to aim automatically for the legs versus the head. Little things, thats what training does for folks like us. " Ronan offers then shrugs. "But, I'm also probably the only one who uses this floor so maybe I'm the weird one." Ronan muses.
"Understood. I do not leak normally. I believe damage can cause me to leak lubricants, but I am nuclear powered and therefor produce not natural waste as best I can tell. I look forward to meeting the team. I will stay in my quarters until summoned. I am sure Lahz, wants me to be better covered before I leave here. I understand the Naruni situation is problematic here in MercTown. Had I been of sound mind, I would have been more sensitive to that fact."
Ronan stops and turns to the Borg. "We're gonna have to go over humor and sarcasm, metaphors. Can't let metaphors go over your head. I bet I can find a few comedians. That can count as training too." Ronan says. Metaphors go over his head.

Ronan leads him back to the front and nods as he states his warning. "No idea, honestly. I'm sort've knew to this planet myself, so we'll defer to Lahz on that risk. He said he'll be back soon, so just cloak up for now, Lahz is a pretty good engineer, he can hook you up. We'll hang out here til he returns then head over.." Ronan finishes

After he’s disposed of Gemini and topped off various enchantments at the mages’ guild, Vheld will return to the Haunt and idly listen in on the getting-to-know you section but not have much to say himself (as per usual). ’Reaping souls’? Not an official Repo-Bot then. Probably, anyway. I’m surprised that Naruni let this kind of tech get away from them. Vheld will try to conceal his smile when Lahz starts the new guy off with the usual paranoia. I suppose this time it might actually be justified- the CS did take a couple of shots at us. Big ones. But somehow I don’t think they could swing a repo-bot. Then the arm-wrestling. I suppose someone around here has to supply the machismo. He’ll chuckle softly when the contest is resolved in Ronan’s favor, and finally speak. ”Looks like someone made a friend.” Otherwise, aside from a nod to Thorn, Vheld will remain quiet for the rest of the ‘interview.’ When someone shows up with the prospect of a paying job Vheld will silently observe that too. After the courier was gone, he’ll say ”We could use some paying work after that last one. I suppose that means I should go get current with my guild dues, then. I’ll be back for the meeting later.” Turning to his minions, Vheld addresses them ”Return to the basement. Rest as you can, and be ready in case I call for you later. Sil, with me.” Sullen but generally satisfied after the morning’s bout of torture, the minions do as instructed. Vheld then hops on Sil and returns to the mages’ guild to make a donation and do a little shopping.

Ronan says while helping and looks to Lahz.

"Need to find an explosives catalog or something." Ronan says and will then, unironically use the second most important thing on the third floor, the Intranet Terminal to kill time before the meeting.

When it's near go-time, Ronan will find Lahz. "How do you want to play this? I say a couple of us approach, the rest scope the joint. Deuce isn't a people person. He takes the swordsman over here to scope while you, deathbot and I talk to the guy. Thoughts?" Ronan suggests. Ronan turns to Ethan. "You being deathbot and at the table, think before you speak. This'll be a client and a good test for you." Ronan suggests.

It was technically outside the Walls so it made a few things easier. We will want to get that rebuilt pretty quickly, but if you need a workshop out there, let me know what kind of budget you need to stock it ..."
Ronan crosses his arms and nods along. "Go light a fire under their asses to fix the one that got blown up. Maybe we just outright buy it and draw up our own hangar plans? I'm not rich or anything but you sure seem to be!" Ronan says whimsically. "As for a budget on explosives, I'll get back to you on that." Ronan finishes. Near blank cheque to go nuts and build explosives? Ronan's face lights up at the idea.

Ronan shrugs in resignation and grips the sword, flourishing it before rolling his eyes to himself. "This one of the bug swords?" Ronan asks Lahz without expecting an answer before nodding. "Alright, your call. I'll pop one of Duece's talismans too just too add to the affect." Ronan says with a sly grin as he reels around on his heels.

"Alright, let's go scope this joint out." Ronan says with a grin.

"I won this mug fair and square. In a competition. No further questions." Wayne joins the others on the tour because why the hell not?
Ronan wrote: Tue Mar 07, 2023 12:22 pm Ronan points to the three rooms. "Okay, that one is Wayne's, right?" He asks Wayne if he is there before pointing to the others.
"It's mostly just guns and pictures of myself." Wayne says as if he were joking (which he was not).

Wayne heads down the the 3rd floor and makes a call to The Tattoo Shop @ The Pyramid Emporium. "Hello, may I speak with Wen Yongliang. Thank you." He waits through the pleasant hold music until his contact picks up. "Nín hǎo. No, that's still all the Cantonese I know. I know, I know, you told me if I studied I could get the dragon backpiece. Yes... yes sir. I understand. I call for business reasons. What can you tell me about your business neighbor Brewster Brolock and the Briar Room?"

"I do love the outdoors. Oh, you probably mean just wait outside the door and be the first to get punched if something goes down. Sure, I love that too."

After completing installation of the Borg armor on Gaunt, Lahz will change back into his Roadrunner PA and load folks into some kind of vehicle (driven by Ray) to head for the >> Mystic District: Pyramid Emporium >>.
