Lleaving Llorn?? ... Ship Happens

Post by Ya-Blik »

The Sweet Kerroline is a two-masted sailing ship. She is seaworthy, fairly well maintained and solidly constructed.

Mürrischer remarks, "You seem nicer than most of the humans I've encountered since coming south ... I don't think it would be too hard to rig it for temporary shelter." Jerri stretches the sailcloth taut and taps in some small nails to secure it in place as he replies, "Nicer than some, worse than others. Besides, while you folk are on watch, this gives a place for us to banish Wally and his gassy ... issues so the rest of us can sleep." As the soldier works, Reisender opts to scan his thoughts with telepathy. Jerri's thoughts float around from thinking of a barmaid from last night ... very, very graphically ... and his father, killed by Wolfen some 10 years ago, he is not particularly comfortable with Mürrischer.

Goram meanwhile takes note of Mürrischer's effort to make a shelter and thanks the Wolfen, “Thank you for seeing to that, the need for shelter hadn’t crossed my mind.” This draws a raised eye from Jerri who, brought the sail and made the suggestion for how to set up, but he shrugs and departs without further comment.

In the cargo hold on the lower deck, Ivy takes a seat on a crate near the Red Brigaders' dice game and prays for a detailed roadmap and guidance but receives no obvious answer from Epim that she can perceive at this time. Silhouette offers an opinion on Alwin, and the Red Brigade being human, relating her recent experience with some Orc before she queries, “But if we do not judge individuals for the group what of monsters? ... Demons, devils, changelings, and vampires? Some things are just born of evil. I suppose we are now the very first shift on watch." Silhouette then begins her own meditation and supplication/prayers to Aco and the Juggernaut.

Mox turns at the last comment and makes a spitting sound over his left shoulder twice, "I saw a changeling two years back. I did. It killed an Orc kid and took its place ... " In response Mohe growls and nods "I member that ... twas a human lookin bandit we chased into town. Killed the kid in a Barn ... whole community fought to 'save' it from the Mercs, but the real kid was already dead. They was just defending the killer. Sick twisted creature ... I member the Mom dies and then the Dad went crazy after the first kid's body was found ... sad sad shit." The mood is darkly quiet for several moments before the rattle of dice settles and the pips show Mox winning a small pile of silver and copper.

Alwin Alwin nods to the Captain and thanks him, "Excellent, in the meantime, is there anything I can help with?" Captain Miths offers a yawn and shakes his head as he motions to a few other ships in the distance, "Not much of concern out here this close to Llorn. Most pirates and the like want you unable to call for aid ... not a rule of course, more like a guideline. We'll sail South headed for the Old Kingdom River. Should be able to hire a Warlock in Venniss and that will buy us some help against the current. Otherwise, keep a weather-eye open on watch, and make sure your animals don't water the main deck too much. Those are your problem. If they become mine, they go ... and keep the troll from putting more holes in the ship."

Ivy shakes her head sadly. "That is a truly sad tale my friend." I wished that was just a story, not something that really happened. If only the murdered boy could have been brought back from the dead! So sad.

After a moment, a childhood story comes back to her. A tale involving crickets and children, but without the fatalities and murder. "Ever heard of the tale of Slyer Yo Keno? It is where crickets come from. 'Chirp chirp' they go, all night long. Nothing you say can stop a cricket. They only hear themselves and think themselves very clever."

"The story goes that Slyer was a child who thought himself very clever, so clever in fact that his pride convinced him of his own greatness and he had to win every argument he ever got himself into. His pride drove him to seek out points to argue over, no matter how small, for having the last word and being right in his own mind is what mattered most. The town he grew up with tolerated him with good humor, for he was just another child seeking attentions in the wrong way. Alas, eventually with such passive parents and tolerant folks Slyer grew up with his childish pride intact. One day, he started an argument with a local wizard he wished to outsmart, and Slyer picked another of his lengthy word arguments."

She looks up at everyone, and smiles. "The wizard did not slay him, but turned him into a cricket. 'Chirp chirp', it would go all night. No matter what you say, it will always want the last word. 'Chirp chirp'. I've met some folk like that, and whenever they might start to bother me I remember that words are but the chirps of crickets."

"My grandmother used to warn us as babes about trying to be too clever, because you might actually just be a noisy cricket. I am not sure why it came to my mind just now, but it sounded less gruesome than true stories about childhood murders. Maybe I wished there were some alternative to your tale than it ending in killing, but perhaps that is wishful thinking. I do not know. I wish a powerful hero might have brought the boy back from the underworld to be again among the living. Sadly, there are often no easy answers. Not even for noisy crickets."

Alwin sighs, I am not sure how I end up in the daddy roll. he looks back at the animals and rolls his eyes. Looking around the ship he wonders, how does one keep a mule from watering the deck? His head cocks to the side as he considers, Do they pee in their sleep? A smile grows on his face as he wonders if they do or don't. They will be less of a concern about breaking things if they are asleep. But, how long can I keep them asleep? He shakes his head considering, No very, It would be a waste to try to keep them asleep.

Alwin walks around looking for a bucket and a rope, Reduced to a stable boy. If we just kill them all, then there is no one left to care if the animals relieve themselves or not. No one left to complain if Goram makes more holes. Again a smile grows on his face as he considers how quickly he could take out the crew, then it fades, No one left to pilot the ship either. Dammit! As he continues to look for the bucket, he makes his way passed Goram, "I would have expected a sturdier deck, no?" He pats the troll on the back, "If you see a bucket let me know, apparently it is our job to clean up after any mess our animals make." Alwin will nod to troll and continue his walk around the ship.

Watch for pirates, clean the pee, keep the troll calm... This Captain wants everything from us. Ridiculous. Trolls need to expel energy. Is he supposed to just sit for days on end? Mules need to pee, and I supposed to tie things off so they can't?! He catches himself internalizing a tantrum then starts to count silently, 1... 2... 3... 4... He doesn't get far before his mind drifts, or does he want me to be distracted? His eyes close slightly as he wonders about the motives of the Captain. He wants me focused on everything but him. What is he up to?

Alwin considers the motives again for a moment then heads to the cargo hold quickly to see if the boxes are still undisturbed and see who is watching them. When he gets there and sees silhouette and Ivy his mind seems to settle slightly. He asks the pair, "Have you seen anything suspicious? Has anyone seemed to linger?

An ear on the Wolfen's head turns, not sure if he wanted the answer he went in search of, but it is an answer to his suspicions none the less. Of course that's where his thoughts are. His own thoughts also give Jerri pity for what hes gone through, but can't think of anything he can say to offer any peace of mind to the human that has so far been kind. When Jerri walks away when they're done, Mürrischer sees there's words for him right now and isn't going to chase him down to press information he probably shouldn't have yet if at all about the human. His own thoughts travel before he gets back on track. I don't think I've been across any other Wolfen in a while-. No. I have cargo to protect and deliver much further south.

He turns his head to Goram, "It's nothing, and it's probably best to let the human be for the time being. He looks to the damage done to the ship so far and considers what can be done about it. He looks to the closest Red Brigade or deckhand and offers his hand, "I know carpentry if a hand is needed to fix that"

Mürrischer helps with the repairs the best he can if and where they let him to the ship all the while watching for anyone that may be trying to position themselves for an opportunistic attack of any kind and any other similar activity around him.

The mood is darkly quiet for several moments before the rattle of dice settles and the pips show Mox winning a small pile of silver and copper.
Silhouette looks up at Mox and knowingly shakes her head as she thinks for a time as she considers how to speak her thoughts,"The story has problems, it was being made up on the spot. Mox left out how they figured out it was the changeling before the kid’s body was found. The story seems to be told in reverse." Activating Telepathy, Superior the changeling Silhouette reaches out to the Red Brigade man’s mind. Silhouette thinks,”Changelings can only partially change size, not from a full grown human to child, even an orc child would be stretching it."

Telepathic probe: (1)Silhouette probes Mox for if he was there through the entire ordeal, (2)did he see the changeling proven in death, (3) did he see the child body or only saw part of what transpired?

Rather than questioning him presently Silhouette adds her own story to the ones being told. After all it was the politeness of travelers to entertain one another. Silhouette says,”Yin-Sloth being a barbaric place crawls with such creatures.” Nodding at Mox she says,”Like your story, a child was involved, I didn't see it myself.” Not true, not a lie, she had a different perspective than an outsider to events as she tells,”There was a mother to one of these creatures living in a human village where they discovered the babe. You see the child hadn’t mastered its ability to mimic the good races, not even the orcs, which like your story Mox we can agree they being brutes are far in-between on the scale higher of monsters than changelings.” Silhouette holds up a weighing hand and says,”But the village had some knowledge and practiced the revealing ways on the mother to force her true face, but to no avail. They knew she was strange for having the complexion and ears of an elf, but this changeling had mastered its ways you see, by being strange among strangers to conceal her oddity even after having lived there for half a dozen years." Silhouette breaths,"They did not know she could endure any pain so long as she was not taken from her child. Though they were confident in a proof alone as the changeling cried out in pain in their effort to reveal the true face, it still did not shed water as only angry eyes met theirs. It was known to them that changeling's can’t cry lest the tears burn and smoke upon their face.”

Silhouette takes a breath,”So they found this child out and the mother’s duplicity. The villagers though had to restrain their rage, because normally such creatures are, however they are killed, burned immediately lest they rise from the grave as revenants to seek revenge. Their restraint was required because it was this year’s time of the Flame, where kindled lamp, candle, and cooking fire was carefully guarded lest wild fire be sparked. Even the dry storms filled with lightning cracks stirred the fear of these people. As an aside, I have known some regions to practice this restraint the closer to the Baalgor wastes, which makes this accounting I have well detailed, I think. As most in the swamps and by the sea don’t concern themselves for open flame or dry lightning.”

Silhouette shrugs to move on from the detail as she says,”So they held this strong willed changeling mother and child in a pen carved out of the side of a drought river bed, walled in by sticks and branches and cracked mud for a prison until they could dispose of them properly in fire. The threat that breaking the bounds of their prison would see them handled brutally starting with the child. This arrangement lasted weeks before a rain finally came.” Holding out a hand Silhouette taps all her pointed fingers vehemently into her palm,”The villagers were so happy to see the drought breaking that festivities broke out they forgot their prisoners location until the next day. The mother having been washed away in the river’s sudden flooding from the rains was found trapped, exhausted, shivering, and holding the child above the water to keep it alive as they were trapped in roots of a bank-side tree. There exhausted, she held up the boy yet alive who diligently bringing food had also been washed away with them.”

Silhouette wraps her arms at her sides as she continues,”You see, the people had been taking care of the changelings and unable to resist talking with the mother who had been pleading for their mercy, to just let her leave and never return. They had grown to feel for the monster and especially the child even in its constant state of ugliness. With the rain’s oncoming it was not yet past the prescribed time of Flame, but also the prison was destroyed so it was deemed that the changelings had indeed tried their escape. However they recanted their promise to make the child suffer first on account of the boy’s saved life. With this they drew a rope across a large tree’s bow stating the mother will be hung until death brings on the change.” Laughing sardonically Silhouette adds,”Doubly so…in a changeling's death.”

Silhouette nods her head and says,”But the monster had escaped the pen for it so even as the rains continued to fall and the rope was drawn around the changeling woman’s neck she looked on at her child as the rain drizzled down to matte blond hair revealing those pointed elven ears. Sharply the rope was made taught as the woman gasped and heaved pitiful sobs as rain trickled and dripped down her face. While she looks on her babe to give it a last memory of love she implores the village a last request before the rope was to cut off her breath, raise her child under their protection.”

Mime -- 42% / 1d100: [23] = 23
Silhouette makes a hand over hand gesture occasionally shaking as if the weight of the struggle at the other end was real she continues,"As they hauled on the rope and the changeling’s gasps, her struggle quieted, and her writhing soon stilled to but a light swinging of the body’s weight in the wind, the villagers waited for the change. Soon their feet turned to shuffling, and of nervous coughs, and yet soon whispers as their confusion rose with the minutes that passed.” Silhouette looks around the present listeners,”Before they could not see her through their wrath and in the rain they could not see still again as they took the child from her...” Silhouette leans back,"For it is known that a changeling cannot shed tears lest they burn their face."

”Ivy” wrote: I wish a powerful hero might have brought the boy back from the underworld to be again among the living.
Silhouette smiles sadly,”And as all heroic stories begin with a tragedy, we dream that the doing of a good rights the wrong that can never be.” Silhouette nods as a questioning brow raises,”What happened to the wizard in your tale? He must have gone mad turning that many little boys wanting the last word into his torment of crickets!”
”Ivy” wrote: He asks the pair, "Have you seen anything suspicious? Has anyone seemed to linger?

Ivy hears of Mox's story of a changeling and decides to relate the tale of one Slyer Yo Keno, a child who thought himself overly clever and always had to have the last word, and ended up a cricket. The Forsaken Mage delves into Mox's mind using Telepathy [-8 ISP] where she finds that Mox was indeed there through the entire ordeal in a village maybe a week south of Southwatch whose name he cannot recall. Mox definitely saw the changeling take form when it died, and he also saw the child's body (he actually saw both the original child's body and a 2nd identical-looking child who transformed after its death).

Silhouette briefly tries to tell herself a lie that a changeling could not shift from a full grown human to child ...
The changeling does have size and mass restrictions. The absolute smallest size is three feet (0.9 m) and the tallest is ten feet (3 m). [PFRPG Pg 309]
... even though she's quite aware that a child is within her own shapeshifting capabilities, as long as the shape would not be shorter than 3ft. Further, any number of different "children" are well taller than her minimum.

The Southern Mage then adds a lengthy story to the others, " ... Yin-Sloth being a barbaric place crawls with such creatures. Like your story, a child was involved, I didn't see it myself. There was a mother to one of these creatures living in a human village where they discovered the babe. You see the child hadn’t mastered its ability to mimic the good races, not even the orcs, which like your story Mox we can agree they being brutes are far in-between on the scale higher of monsters than changelings.” Silhouette holds up a weighing hand and hears Mohe snarl and Wally's eyes widen before he puts a hand on the Orc's shoulder to settle him.

Silhouette launches into a lengthy story about a changeling and a river. The Red Brigade members do not seem to find the tale to have any kind of moral, and her telepathy confirms that the trio found the story pretty much rambling-incoherent-drivel (though Mohe finds the human girl rude for saying Orcs are more brutal and monstrous than changelings). With a shrug, Mox grabs a skin of brandy from Mohe and tosses it up to land between Ivy and Silhouette, "Right. Not sure what all that was. Changeling tears do not cause smoke. That would be too easy."

Up on deck, Alwin walks over to see Goram and the Wolfen Ranger, "I would have expected a sturdier deck, no?". . . If you see a bucket let me know, apparently it is our job to clean up after any mess our animals make." The Troll responds to his older friend, "Very few materials shy of stone can survive an unfettered troll, and although I am not a shipwright, I am certain that stone is a horrible material for ships. I will be more careful, for the structural stability of the ship is a boon for everyone. As for the cleaning of the deck, I will make sure the deck is well kempt my friend. I would help below deck but unfortunately I am unable to move well there. I think the only one below deck is Ambrosius and he is a good boy. If Ivy makes sure he comes top side to do his business, I will take care of his messes too. In my former life I became accustomed to labor and harbor no ill will towards it. Sometimes it helps me focus." The relative-giant then begins practicing his sword-work in the limited area available. Meanwhile Mürrischer moves over to the crewmen who have finished patching the broken planks and asks about assisting, but they decline (it's already finished).

Alwin then heads down to the cargo hold quickly to see if the boxes are still undisturbed and see who is watching them. He finds Silhouette and Ivy and asks the pair, "Have you seen anything suspicious? Has anyone seemed to linger? The rattle of bone dice clatter as Wally, Mox and Mohe continue their game a few feet away.

Silhouette looks around,”Oy!” Slapping her knee she says in a mismatch of accents and speaking styles,”Aye, there is something suspicious seen! An elf has been asking query unlike himself being a helping hand and remains to stand if not linger with eyes too attentive for our guarded transport! ... Alwin stares at Silhouette for a long minute. His eyes blink multiple times as he digests her poetic answer. "Silhouette, it is probably best if you do not drink while on duty." He pauses again, "I'll take that as a no, but please don't be complacent in your watch. Just because someone is familiar, it doesn't mean they are no longer a concern. I have some... concerns."

Alwin turns to Ivy, "If you could, Ambrosius should do his... business... upstairs on the deck. Either Goram or I will be washing the animals refuse from the deck. The captain has made it a point to bring up his disdain for mess on his ship." He looks back at silhouette and cocks his head slightly before returning his look to Ivy. "It seems you have a bit of a mess on your hands as well. Maybe we should keep her further from the spirits during this trip."

Alwin will take a moment to look around the area for an empty bucket and/or a rope. Once he finds one or is satisfied there is none, he will address the red brigade members. "Since you are taking the day shift, someone from you team will need to clean up after the animals while we are asleep. I expect that won't be an issue?"

After any further conversation.

Alwin will head upstairs to the deck to clean up and animal refuse on the deck. Along the way he will examine the other cargo to see if there is anything interesting, he may have missed on his look earlier. Once outside he will work to keep the animlas clean, watch out for dangers along the shore and take his turn watching the cargo in the hold.

The Wolfen, for now, continues to keep to the upper decks where he won't be under constant risk of hitting his head on the wooden structure of the ship and keeps an eye and nose aware for new scents of anyone aboard the ship as he takes the time to get to know where everything is aboard. He pauses for a look at everyone he encounters the first time their scent cross his nostrils and more or less leaves them alone unless they interact with him. To those that do interact, he's kind and gives them kind as conversation as he is presented. Even for those people aboard that do not return his kindness, he is kind and calm, though the temptation to relocate them to the river will be there. He does not. He keeps most of his attention to watching for treachery.

Mürrischer even eavesdrops on what he would think are suspicious conversations, but mostly those that include Wolfen, to hear what others have to say about about, if anything, his kind. He doesn't add his two cents to anything unless called out, at which point he only tells them of his life as he was raised and grew up to the far north, deep in the wilderness. Though he may receive or hear something that may make him consider it, he does not act out of spite toward the strangers and gives them the benefit of the doubt for their ignorance of life in the Wolfen Empire. He eventually finds a seat on the side railing of the ship and watches the river and land.

Only the Gods can understand some things.

Ivy blinks a few times before deciding to let the story pass without comment. Though she rarely drinks, and never to excess, she finds herself welcoming the offer of brandy at this moment. A friendly offer, it would be rude not to accept.

"Thank you," she says, thanking Mox for the friendly offer of the brandyskin. "My grandfather used to make fruit brandy from cherries, he called it Giggle Juice, but I swear it could strip paint from walls." I can use this to build bridges here, they like their drink and so let's temper that with friendship. It is a long way we will travel together.

"Let us all drink to a safe journey for us all." She raises this slightly, and politely toasts, "To new friends!" She takes a polite sip before holding it out for the next.

"Silhouette, it is probably best if you do not drink while on duty." He pauses again, "I'll take that as a no, but please don't be complacent in your watch. Just because someone is familiar, it doesn't mean they are no longer a concern. I have some... concerns."
Ivy laughs, "She hasn't had any yet. I think it may help us all." She offers to Silhouette first, and then Alwin. "To friendship."

Alwin's head sways back in disbelief as his eyes open wide, Is she bewitched? He looks around at the others wondering if someone has messed with her mind, She has not confused me like this before. He tone and accent seems to have, changed.

When the gnome offers him a drink, he sees a certain innocence in her eyes. He is caught off guard by her charming nature and for a brief moment is actually open to idea of a happy toast, "Sure. To friendship" He take a small drink from the skin then offers it back to her. "That is an amazing dog you have there. My mule has no such abilities." He sighs at thought of how much his mule can drop and briefly considers reducing the animals rations. No, I will need him strong. I can clean his mess for this brief trip. The elf stands aloof, lost in thought before turning to Ivy and asking, "Do you think good people can do bad things? Or do bad people sometimes do good things?"

The elf stands aloof, lost in thought before turning to Ivy and asking, "Do you think good people can do bad things? Or do bad people sometimes do good things?"
Ivy considers the question a moment before answering. "Both." she decides. "Given the right circumstances, even very good people can get caught up in some very bad things. It usually happens a little at a time. One's nature is not always constant, and thankfully so for this means there is always a way for the bad to become good. The bad just need to understand that one's path is not forever set. Often villainous people tire of it as they age, recognizing it for the lonely and fearful destructive path that it is. The final lock on their hearts is the trap in thinking that it is too late to change. It never is."

She recalls her cousin Faffy, who got into all manner of trouble. "Cousin Faffy was the opposite, a genuinely nice person who, little by little, fell into the trap of thinking her goodness was similarly set in stone. She thought she accumulated some kind of moral wealth, like gold in a bank. This made her more inclined to do bad things under the guise of 'I'm a good person', and 'It's just this one thing'. One thing led to another.. and it's not a pretty story."

She smiles gently. "Then there are some who think there is no good or bad, just shades of grey. I would rather not delve into the deep depths of that nonsense. So this is a simple way to distinguish the two.." She counts off the points on her little fingers, "Good people care about others. They are not selfish and can be trusted. Even when no one is looking. Even if it hurts. Especially when it hurts."

"And then," she adds in an off-hand sort of way. "Bad people don't really have feelings for anyone, except perhaps themselves or some thing they elevate in their minds beyond all else. They do not care if anyone is hurt by their actions. They simply cannot be trusted with anything, for their world revolves around themselves."

"But," she shrugs, "change is always possible. For better or worse. I try to remind people of what's important and tip the balance when I meet someone. Someone who could go either way."

She scratches Ambrosius behind the ears, who has sat quietly during this whole discussion. His tongue lolling out happily, he quickly rolls over for a good belly rub. Laughing, Ivy says "Believe it, if Ambrosius can learn to spare the deck an unsightly mess, I think even worst of us can change for the better."

A bit bothered by Silhouette's greeting, Alwin cautions her against beginning her watch drinking, only to be told by Ivy that the Southerner (to her knowledge) remained quite sober. The Half-Wizard then advises the others that they will need to look after their animals' leavings. Ivy responds with an anecdote about Ambrosius apparently being trained enough to scat-as-directed, while Wally shrugs, "Of course. We're not paying our way upriver. You wanna let the crap pile up on deck and the piss drip down?" He points to the plans above Alwin's head, "Same deck fella, it wont smell great down here if it starts to pile up. Just grab the shovel from the wagon and lob it over the side."

Silhouette tries to explain to their Orcish companion that her comments were not intended to insult. Ivy lifts the skin of brandy and offers a toast to fellowship and friendship which seems to clear the mood. She drinks some, then passes the brandy to Silhouette who drinks and jokes that she may well have been drinking while shopping, then passes the skin over to Alwin who drinks and poses a question of morality to Ivy. Silhouette notes that her miming of drink after some initial was successful, but even the small amount imbibed was quite potent for her. Discussion continues for a bit. The Red Brigade members last a short while longer and Wally asks before they leave, "Captain said we were going to Venniss right?"

Goram converses with his sword in his head about poop. Reisender walks around sniffing at people while trying to keep out of their way. Neither the Captain, First Mate, or dozen sailors/crew seem dangerous though several cast suspicious glances his direction. The Wolfen does not hear anything approaching danger, detects no ambushes, and mostly just hears sailors working and talking about mundane stuff.

The first night's watch goes quietly and smoothly, and in the morning the Red Brigade rise to take over. Alwin finds no hidden compartments anywhere that the group has access to. The cabin the smaller folks are sharing is a bit cramped, but must be much worse for the Brigade guys who have more folks trying to occupy the same space (and none of them is a Gnome).

Mürrischer spends the first hour of dawn with his fishing line and hook in the water, trolling for whatever may decide to bite. During the wait for a tug on the line, he continues to remain aware of his surroundings for piratical intention aboard the vessel and out on the river. If he catches anything, he cleans the catch the best he can before setting it in a safe spot to sun-bake.

Soon enough, the Wolfen does find the idea to venture below deck, the wood planks beneath him aching with each step under his weight. He probably gains a look of disapproval of some form as his ears scrape the ceiling of the deck above. Now i remember why I had stayed on the top. He knows it in his own interest to keep his time below deck brief, now from the experience of his head grinding against the overhead with each step. The feeling for him is more of wood grain disturbing the fur on his ears and head, which for him, is mildly annoying. He hold his grievances to himself with the first crew member or Red Brigade he meets. "Where had the others of the group I'm in held up?"

Any inquiry to why is met with him answering with a simple, "For my own curiosity."

He takes a look around whichever compartment he initially finds himself in and gets an idea of how everything is situated from where he stands and lets an ever so slight level of paranoia have him scan and sniff the air for any attempt to take him by surprise before returning to satisfying his curiosity to where the others had been.

The diminutive priest will dutifully finish her watch in the cargo hold, then stretches her legs. Her mind considers the conversation she's shared and thoughts of old tales she'd heard come to mind. These crates are our treasure and we are like wary dragons in the old tales.

"Perhaps dragons have the right of it. The stories say they sleep atop the treasures they do not want stolen. Would it would be better if these boxes of Myfflin's were packed inside a bed? Or a bed set over the top of them? Or an entire team of guards sleeping between it and an entry point an intruder would be forced to take? Just a thought, and I will continue with this plan if you wish. It will be a long trip, we can think on it a few days."

If time goes on, Ivy will settle into a routine of watchfulness when on guard duty, above or below. When not busy, she helps ensure Ambrosius gets a little exercise up on deck and helps Alwin clean up after the animals when needed.

AGM supplemental post.....

Date/Time: Shortly after departing Llorn.
Environment: Clear Skies
Location: Aboard the Sweet Kerroline

Somewhere far off and ashore, a bell begins to peal. Not just any bell, for it is the competition bell signalling an end to the Valentine's Day Competition.

Thank you to all entrants, they were highly entertaining. Clearly, the legendary creativity of the PF dimension is not a myth. Alas there can only be one winner of the big 600xp prize, and that is:

Alwin

Congratulations!

All other entrants receive a 300xp prize, which is also pretty nifty indeed. Well done!

Perhaps some of these love criminals shall appear in future posts, along with certain bounties. But for now, we can only sit back and enjoy the riverboat journey. While relaxing on deck feel free to reread old entries, I know I will... possibly when plotting terrible events and calamities.

The entries are:

Alwin confirms Venniss as their next destination, and Ivy notes, "I heard the captain say that if he cannot find a water warlock in Llorn he'd hope to hire one at some port in the Old-Kingdom Delta. That I suppose is our next stop ... Is Venniss in the Old-Kingdom Delta? I do not know how long it is to reach there by boat." Wally nods, "Okay good. Vennis should be another day or so, depends on the wind. Myfflin said to check in in Venniss if our route took us there. Need to stop at the tavern of the Blue Rabbits and ask about someone named Granas."

In the morning, Mürrischer spends a bit of time fishing then wanders around a bit including down below deck in the cargo hold where he cannot stand fully upright but has to crouch ever so slightly to keep from dragging his head along the planks. There, three of the Red Brigade Tom, Jerri, Stubrik lounging about a bit on their shift guarding the crates. He makes his way back on deck and finds a sailor. "Where had the others of the group I'm in held up?" he asks a passing sailor, "Oh ummm ... some were downstairs, some in Cabin (4), one was feeding horses ... not sure about the others." Eventually, the Ranger turns in for some hours of sleep.

The Wolfen and Troll largely spend the day resting on deck without much trouble. Goram has his sword telepathically tell him a story and he drifts off to snoring despite the noise of the crew. The Red Brigade guys (on day-shift) seem happy to leave them be, avoiding intrusion on the night-shift while they are resting.

Meanwhile in the Cabin (4), as Ivy is preparing to lie down for the days rest she asks "Perhaps dragons have the right of it. The stories say they sleep atop the treasures they do not want stolen. Would it would be better if these boxes of Myfflin's were packed inside a bed? Or a bed set over the top of them? But all she received in response is silence from Alwin and Silhouette apparently already fast asleep. So she turns in. Some hours later Ivy and Alwin are awakened by Silhouette bolting upright in her bunk at the triggering of a Mystic Alarm in the Cargo-hold. In short order it is determined that the Silhouette's silent alarm was triggered by someone touching a box, but nothing seems to have been actually disturbed and it was most likely someone passing by.

Ivy's sleep is disturbed by a troubled dream. She remembers parts of it. Finding troll tracks. The smell of her village burning. The mad dash through the woods, running headlong through bushes, ducking under branches and getting entangled in undergrowth. Willing herself to hurry home before the end. She hears the bloodthirsty roar of a troll. Then her forehead collides with a lowhanging branch and she sees stars and darkness. Gasping, she hear someone moving very near her. A troll?

The priestess opens her eyes, blinking away the dream. Her dog Ambrosius notices her mistress moving, and quietly nuzzles against her cheek. She is almost surprised to find herself aboard the Sweet Kerroline, and the sound was Silhouette bolting upright, not some bloodthirsty troll.

She pats her faithful dog and turns to her new companion. "What is it?" Ivy asks Silhouette.

She follows to the cargo hold and discovers the reason for it all.

The gnome yawns, "How long till our watch?" Thinking back on the dream the gnome silently prays. Epim please care for my husband and sons until I join them.

Alwin listens in as Wally explains his instructions to meet with Granas at the Blue Rabbit, He gave me no such instruction. He looks over Wally considering, Is it a rouse? Is this an attempt to dump some of us? "When did he mention that? He didn't mention any detail like that to me?" Alwin cocks his head slightly, obviously and outwardly suspicious he continues, "Some of us should stay with the ship and watch over the cargo." As the Elf speaks he realizes, but maybe... that is exactly what he wants. Maybe he doesn't want us around for the meeting. Following up the thought he continues, "but I am sure someone can come with you as backup." Alwin's mouth purses as he wonders, but who?

Alwin decides to get some sleep and think over Ivy's proposition of moving the cargo. Lying on the floor he resign's to a good rest before making a decision or answering.

Waking with a start Alwin follows Silhouette down to the cargo hold to find the boxes still untouched. This is a sign. Nothing disturbed them this time, but where was the watch? Alwin turns to Ivy, "We should move the cargo to our room. You are correct, but, I don't think anyone should sleep on watch. A lot of things can happen while you are sleeping. Stealth is common. But, there will be less outside traffic to concern ourselves with." Alwin looks around the hold for the group that should be watching the cargo. If they are there he will question, " Sill placed her alarm on these other boxes because of their proximity, did you see crew getting close? Did you warn them?"

Alwin scoff's, "Indeed, maybe our compatriots desire their rest interrupted." Alwin walks to the boxes, picks one up and starts to carry it to the cabin they have been assigned.

Following up the thought he continues, "but I am sure someone can come with you as backup." Alwin's mouth purses as he wonders, but who?
Ivy decides almost immediately she is the logical choice to leave. I'm not the most imposing of guards here, and Ambrosius could use a good walk. "I can go meet Granas. Maybe he's the water warlock the Captain is hoping for?" She pauses a moment and looks to Wally and Alwin in turn to see if anyone objects. "And besides, I did promise to buy some special drinks for us all. Something gnomish if I can find it in a hurry."

She smiles pleasantly, and wonders how quickly they can reach this new town.

The priest nods. "I honestly thought you had fallen asleep and did not hear that. I'm glad you did." A connection forms in her mind. Perhaps both dragons and elves only pretend to sleep? She smiles at the thought, "If you want things guarded, look to dragons for their methods. For all a thief knows, the elf named Alwin only appears to be sleeping. I suppose dragons are much the same."

Ivy attempts to help the elf with the boxes as best she can. How heavy could they be? Failing that, she at least keeps him company. Looks like Alwin isn't as clumsy with hauling boxes as he said. Should I mention it? No. Best not. Let him help without comment, I hope that before he realizes it will become a good habit of his.

Silhouette scowls at Alwin and blows out air from her nose with irritation as he takes it upon himself to carry the crates into their crowded room. Immediately Silhouette's ire evaporates as self preservation causes her to frantically skitter away from his proximity so as not to chance touching the warded crates. Annoyed the changeling says,“You could find the same complaint on behalf of our compatriots if I had to visit the privy in-between, alarm wards or no.”

Silhouette looks to Ivy giving the gnome wide questioning eyes as the priest moves to assist and says giving her weak support of this action,”I suppose this is not without wisdom if my alarms are going to be accidentally touched. Who is to say worse won’t follow, no?” Silhouette slaps her thigh and adds to Alwin's departing back as she raises her voice to carry,”Though Alwin, it is kind of you to give up your sleeping arrangements because of the small confines of the room getting smaller.”

Silhouette nods and then in the interest of not being anywhere close to the duo as they organize the crates, heads up to the deck to check on Petal's water and feed. After that she goes to the front of the boat and watches the water and shore to either side.

Mürrischer thanks the sailor and goes to the cabin he was directed to, the sarcastic enthusiasm of his head all but banging against the overhead painted on his face. The sound of his voice holding a good tone toward seeing the rest of the group than his thoughts of the, in his opinion, walls that are to short to travel through, "And what have the rest of you been up to?"

Mürrischer takes his down time to rest where the borrowed sail was secured, seated on the deck, back against a bulkhead, arms crossed. The huffs of each breath sounding as though the resting Wolfen could bite someone that interrupted him.

While he is awake he puts an hour or two for additional fishing an gladly converses with anyone that were to join him.

That is why we are moving the cargo to our room. And, as for giving up bedspace. You are very mistaken. I can touch the boxes. I would imagine those who can't are the ones losing bed space."

Alwin makes his way to the room. Assuming that Ivy is able to bring the second box he arranges them together in a bed like shape. "We can sleep on top of them." He pauses for a moment as a small voice enters his mind. He continues, "Like dragons."

Ivy simply nods, content to see Alwin trusting her to do this task and also helping move boxes about. The thought of a quick hop ashore to pick up a mysterious newcomer seems to fire the enthusiastic gnome's imagination. Granas... it that a warrior's name? A wizard? I've never heard anyone of that name before, and it sounds almost dwarven.

"I think we'll all sleep more soundly. Put the two together they may even be a vague bed shape. Travelling across the countryside, I've certainly slept on worse."

Once the crates are secure, the gnome feels she should let her friend Mürrischer know the plan. He must be up on deck still, it must be very cramped down here for him, I can't blame him.

"I'll tell Mürrischer the plan for Veniss."

If Mürrischer doesn't enter the room at this point, Ivy will possibly meet him in the corridor, or at the top of the deck. Wherever she finds him, she smiles happily at the sight of her wolfen friend, "Mürrischer, how are you finding the ship?"

Then she adds, "I was talking to Alwin, Wally and a few others. There's a fellow we need to pick up in the next stop along the river. Someone named Granas in the town of Veniss. We ought to be there in another day or so. Wally says that Myfflin sent him, and he'll be at the tavern called 'Blue Rabbits'. I volunteered to go, Alwin wants to stay here and guard the boat. Would you come with me? I would love the company."

Silhouette surveys the river shoreline but turns to watch the troll do hand to hand forms thinking,"No, not that. Sloppy. Master would throw him on his back, big or not, for that mistake..." After a short while Silhouette starts commenting,”Hold between spaces. Move smoothly between them though. You’re not pivoting fully from your back foot when you strike, lead with your hips, the rest will follow.” After a moment of consideration she asks,”Are you doing it wrong for being on the ship? You shouldn’t do your training wrong if that is not the study.”

Silhouette smiles and corrects herself,”Actually, no this is now a study of movement in restrained scenarios.” Silhouette gestures to hold on before she heads down to the cabin and grabs her stave and returns to the upper deck with Goram. Silhouette walks over and uses the necromancer’s bone staff as a guide and pushes the troll’s arms around, like a marionette as she taps feet, knees, elbows, and the small of his back all while instructing corrections that inadvertently provide a window of guidance on her own particular style,”Remember to bend the knees, don’t worry your opponent won’t think himself your sovereign for it.”

Silhouette drops into a horse stance, back straight, hands behind her back with the stave acting as a T as she instructs,”You have a lot of time on this trip to do one of the best things you can practice everyday for as long as you can, this.” Silhouette reaches forward and slaps her taught thigh,”Do you understand right angles, 45 degrees?" Silhouette sighs heavily before adding,"Stand as if you’re trying to shit at a privy you don’t want to touch with your ass touching.” Silhouette comes out of the stance and goes to Goram and says,”Now you do it.” Silhouette stands by to correct him, before joining him to encourage, providing encouragement and corrects if he starts to lose composure.

On hearing Mürrischer agreeing to come along, she claps her hands once excitedly. "That is good. And you never know, a tavern calling itself Blue Rabbit must surely be serving up rabbits for lunch. If they do I'll buy you a few."

I will feel a lot safer with Mürrischer. Still, I wonder who this Granas is. I hope he or she is kindly.

Goram wrote:“The stability is in the spreading of the the legs that makes it easier to balance for hand strikes only. But it is a step in the right direction. What if we were to amend the stance with the goal to have 2 points of contact with the deck at all times?”
Silhouette nods knowingly allowing the troll to add his point however quickly adds a correction to his words,”To what you say, that position will aid it.” Silhouette moves as he proposes and falls to a flat hand on the deck with a foot held out longways as if she were standing but only sideways as she puts out a kick with such a radius she almost reaches her face,”To do this requires stamina, moving from standing to two points of touching to other positions as you will need in a fight will exhaust you as you move your own weight.”

Silhouette rises and taps a finger on her hand,”Yes, it would exhaust you to move the way you say but a rolling stone requires no help.” Silhouette claps and drops into the position Goram had just expressed,”Now do this as you kick, switch sides and…” Putting one hand down and then the other similar to as Goram had and then she kicks allowing the energy to follow through a rotating round house kick that carriers her to face away before again to standing. Silhouette nods,”Yes, I like this. Did you see?” Dance -- 47% / 1d100: [5] = 5 : The graceful movement and transition.

Thoughtfully she starts easing her position around testing out direction and feel before committing and uses one hand while whipping her pulled in legs and feet behind her like a frog as a pair instead of a single extended kick as she says,”I think this one too would work if you’re falling with the movement of the boat. This would be useful going with the rocking motion if you are losing balance, but your opponent realizes why you do this it could give them a lead on you by just reading the motion of the ship.” Silhouette shrugs,”But that is still better than falling over. Consider it a defensive effort rather than to attack.” Dance -- 47% / 1d100: [12] = 12 : The graceful movement and transition.

Silhouette looks around the deck and begins digging into her pouch as she thinks,"He needs to practice like I did, but instead of a rope tied to a leg trying to reach outside of it...", Silhouette pulls out a piece of chalk and holds it up triumphantly,"You should avoid trying to use hands for strikes with this and focus on the reach of your legs inside a very particular spot." Silhouette walks to the the railing of the ship and points at it,”Here, because you want to have practiced on the same ground you are to fight.” So saying she draws a large circle with the chalk. Pointing at the other side of the ship in turn she says,”After you are comfortable over here, try that side because your efforts will have an opposite direction.” As an afterthought she says,"The goal is the stay inside the circle with your hands as you move and let your feet cross the bounds only."

Silhouette looks from the chalk in her hand to the opposite ship railing,"You won't need this for the second one, you should by then know your posture. And avoid striking the railing with your foot...and the crew." Standing back Silhouette observes seemingly to be committed to watching the practice as much as expecting Goram to partake in her direction.

Silhouette purses her lips and thinks with a flat sounding disbelief in her head,"If he'd taught you to fight better, you wouldn't need ten hours..."
Goram wrote:“Very graceful Sil. I believe I see what you saying use the momentum of my motion to continue movement like in circles. A whirling dervish of strikes. I am not as graceful as you and never much of a dancer but I believe my training in gymnastics may allow me to at least be as functional.”
Silhouette gives an obvious shrug to the statement,"Of course, move with the motion as it carries you. Focus on one strike being rapid and true and save the whirling for impressing your enemy. The circling is is no different than normal footwork, too close and your foe can strike as they wish, too far and you cannot press them to make an opening." Silhouette's thoughts fill with recollections of lessons given to her as she recounts words told to her once before,"Dancing helps in the pattern of the movement but is not needed. Imagine each part as having a start and finish, like turning oneself in a full circle head over heels you end in the exact same place on your feet. If you add to it by putting a hand out to push you will go through a different roll but you want to back to the starting point. Repeatable and intended results is your goal, grace merely allows for further options."
Goram wrote: “At least I didn’t break boards this time.”
Silhouette's brow furrows as she asks,"What do you mean this time?"
Goram wrote:”Thank you Sil. You counsel is appreciated. I will continue my practice.”
Silhouette merely nods though the edge of her mouth starts to curl upward.

Wally shrugs in response to Alwin’s inquiry, "It was in the orders from a few days ago. Did not hear Myfflin say anything new about it yesterday." Alwin indicates he is onboard with moving their own delicate cargo into their cabin and begins to move boxes (triggering the 2nd Mystic Alarm placed by Sil), and Ivy volunteers to go to the Blue Rabbits tavern to contact Granas and agrees with Alwin to bring Mürrischer along to accompany her. Silhouette inquires whether Myfflin gave everyone from the Brigade the same directions, and Wally yawns, "Well it was in the briefing. Mox and Mohe never pay attention but they was told hehehe."

An inquiry arises as to whether those on watch had warned the crew not to touch the boxes and is told that they tried to wave off anyone who came near but hadn’t disclosed the invisible alarm that they couldn’t see. The Half-Wizard and Priest try and arrange the crates into a bed, but given that the respective measurements are 3’x1’x1’ (each), the only one who can potentially use them as a bed is Ivy (2’1”) … but most definitely not with Ambrosius.

Ivy departs to connect with Reisender and discuss the planned trip when they get to Venniss, which he happily agrees to. Meanwhile Silhouette leaves the cabin to look around. She finds Goram in the midst of some practice training and offers some pointed critiques which the Soldier takes in stride. After some time training, eventually the night shift begins and the security detail find themselves on watch once more through the night.

Morning breaks and finds Tom, Jerri, and Stubrik stepping in to begin their watch. Tom waves at whoever is presently on duty, "Captain said we made good time. Venniss in about an hour."

==================

Meanwhile in a dockside tavern in Venniss, Granas was wakening in his bed to the smell of warm bread wafting up from the first floor. The last pigeon he’d received from Myfflin advised that he had retained some freelancers to go with the Red Brigade men he had hired. They had left on a ship called the Sweet Kerroline, and while it was likely they would stop in Venniss, if they bypassed Granas should monitor via his silly-bird. Granas recalls that Myfflin had in a prior pigeon-message indicated that Red Brigade were supposed to pick him up if they stopped in Venniss.

Alwin nods at Tom as he yawns, "An hour, got it. Are any of you going to town, or will you be watching the cargo?" Expelling a deep breath Alwin eyes the three with contempt, this night shift is ridiculous. Up all night, and then expected to rest while everyone is awake and working the ship. I don't know why I let them all talk me into this.

Before they are able to answer he continues, "Because I was up all night... and it will be hard to go ashore and then resume duty again tonight." Alwin walk into the cabin and attempts to get some rest, An hour nap, then I will need to stay aware while the others go ashore. Before laying down he calls out to the tio, "Wake me up when we hit the docks."

Without thinking, Ivy yawns immediately after Alwin. Why are yawns contagious? It is like magic sometimes the way it spreads. All the while Ivy has been considering the new sleeping arrangements. There may be a problem still. She gives Ambrosius a long look. On an impulse she reaches out and pats his head fondly. If he touches he crates would it set off the wards? He may have to sleep up on deck, but where?

The gnome sighs. It was not her habit of leaving Ambrosius with others, but it wasn't unheard of.
Alwin wrote: Tue May 09, 2023 9:38 am "Wake me up when we hit the docks."
Ivy nods. She turns to Alwin with a question. "Ambrosius may have to sleep up here on deck," she says slowly. "I do not know if he could set off the wards. Do you?" She notices the sailcloth shelter that was erected overnight to house the troll. However ...... this might work out well.

If her wolfen friend is nearby, she asks him. "Mürrischer are you squeezing down below in one of the cabins, or sleeping up top?"

She pulls her cloak tighter about her to ward off the morning chill as she approaches Goram, wherever he might be.

"Good morning Goram," the little gnome inclines her head in greeting. "I have a favor to ask of you, if you are willing."

She waits for a reply before continuing. I can leave Ambrosius with him for an hour and see how they get along. At Myfflin's things looked most promising. She watches Goram intently, studying his eyes and reading his surface thoughts. (Telepathy -4 ISP)

One of Ivy's eyebrow shoot up at the barrage is thoughts. His mind is not unlike a puppy's, there's eagerness there. They might get along well. Very well indeed.

"That is good," the priest says with a strange kind of satisfaction. This will be good for Goram, there's a hole in his heart he is eager to fill. I see now what it is I am supposed to do. Then she adds, "I need to go into town with a few others to meet a new member of the crew. Someone called Granas is joining us to help us in our task. I am uncertain whether Myfflin's wards can be triggered by Ambrosius, and until I know for sure I cannot risk him sleeping below with me."

She pauses a moment, before continuing. "And so, while I am gone in town, I would like very much to see if you can keep him with you. He sleeps about as long as us, but sleeps lightly. A useful friend for when you lay down for a rest today." She smiles kindly, "If things go smoothly for you both while I am in town, and if you wish it, I would like for Ambrosius to sleep here today under this useful shelter you've made."

"Ambrosius will stay if I command him to, and he's been left apart from me before when I spend a day in prayer or study inside temples. So I know that will work, but you are also new to us. Best to test the waters before leaping into something new. I feel a short town trip away is the best way forward to see if you two get along."

Despite knowing Goram already desires this, she feels it is still best to ask.

"What say you?"

He turns his head to his friend with a friendly smile, "Don't worry little one, I helped Jerri nail down a spare sail on the top deck to rest beneath"

Mürrischer hears about the hour before landing, he has no idea how to burn it and has to think about what he'd do in the mean time. An hour? What can i do with an hour? I did not realize it initially and I did not acknowledge his work, and actually attributed it to Mürrischer, and I may have hurt Jerri’s feelings. but I attempted to correct my rudeness, and I hope he has forgiven me.”

Goram fights with every fiber of his being not to seem overly excited. “Most certainly. Ambrosius is always welcome to stay with me. Is there anything I should know, like dietary restrictions?”. Remain calm Goram. You don’t want to be over eager..

He kneels down and pets Ambrosius. “I don’t want to feed him something disagreeable to his stomach. Do I? No I don’t.” he says in a weird baby like voice. “Who’s a sweet boy, you are.”
"What a wondering thing," she says, and then suddenly laughs.

"Ambrosius is an amazing help for me getting around. Though you'll never ride him, unless some wizard turned you into a gnome, there are a few commands you should know."

The priest whistles softly, and Ambrosius' shaggy ears perk up at attention. "Come," the gnome commands with softly spoken authority. The dog, tongue lolling, swiftly comes to her side. Hugging the great wolfhound's shaggy neck, the gnome whispers soft dwarven words of praise to her faithful friend.

Turning to Goram, she offers a few words of advice. "You don't need treats, you teach them to like praise for the sake of praise. Just as with people, you can never tell a dog too often that you love them. A dog's love is unconditional and unrelenting. No matter what ups and down life brings you, they will always feel the same towards you."

She pauses a moment for her words to sink in. Can you see what this means?

"I believe it was meant to be this way with us all, but something went wrong with us. There's the gift of cleverness in us, but with it comes the temptation in our hearts to put ourselves first. Ambrosius doesn't seem to have it in him, and I often envy him. The love of a dog is a pure thing. He gives you a trust which is total. You must never betray it."

Quickly, she shows a few other cardinal commands. Most important of all are Stay and Quiet. Once done she asks Goram, "Now you try."

She stays close during Goram's attempts at command, reassuring Ambrosius that this stranger is one she expects him to listen to in her absence.

Once satisfied, she wonders to herself. Has it been an hour yet?

From her coat Ivy pulls out her wooden flute. She scans the river ahead for signs of Venniss. Putting the instrument to her lips she is about to play a tune, but then remembers Alwin's words about wanting sleep before arriving. She returns the flute to her coat pocket, quietly watching the water and shoreline.

Don't forget to put others first Ivy.

Alwin cocks his head slightly, "That is a good question. To be honest, I don't know." The thought is provocative. This could be a security risk. Are animals immune to the wards? Someone could use a monkey to open the box. Not a dog. He thinks about that for a second, they could use a dog, a big dog. It could chew the box open. Alwin's mind swirls with thousands of possible scenarios of animals sneaking on board the ship and helping to steal the cargo. Turning to Ivy he says, "We need an answer to this question."

Alwin take a moment to remember his magical training. Do they have true names. Could they?

The distraction leaves him on deck long enough to see the interchange between Goram and Ivy. His eyes roll as the Troll kneels and begins talking to the dog like a baby. He is immediately distracted, Is he even a real troll? Are there fake trolls? He shakes his head as all the stress and worry seems to create a headache. So many details left unasked of our employer. Is this what lawful life is like?

Before going to the cabin he asks one last question, not really expecting an answer, "Ivy, what if you need to move quickly while in town? If things go bad? Won't you need your steed? Maybe Goram should join the trip as well. He could provide extra protection" Walking away he thinks to himself, That troll would die before he lets something happen to that dog.

Ivy's delicate face grows thoughtful. "I will give it more thought, but for now let's assume the answer is yes and lay our plans. I have already arranged for Ambrosius to sleep up here with Goram and Mürrischer under that shelter over there."

Ivy thinks on her knowledge of history, and whether there are stories of animals triggering wards.

The gnome priest considers for a moment. "I agree that Goram is a very unusual troll. There is something going on there I haven't gotten to the bottom of yet, but it is early days. Other folk won't know what we know about him, they'll see that thick man of black hair and those overgrown canine teeth," she points to the enormous troll elsewhere on deck.

"Imagine what might follow. Goram comes along. The conversation you had convincing Captain Miths to take the troll on board, I would have to repeat to the town guard. Then the long walk through town to the inn, heavens help me if I need to ask for directions. Then at the inn, where I doubt our large friend would fit inside, I'd have to worry over him waiting outside alone while I meet with this Granas."

She shakes her head. "No. I would rather not." Mürrischer will be with me also.

She smiles at the sight of Ambrosius providing comfort to the troll, likely without either knowing it. "My heart tells me that he's needed here, and his time with Ambrosius will help us all in the long run."

"As for dangers in the town, it isn't the deep wilds. Mürrischer can handle anyone unpleasant that comes along. A vagabond also has to consider the risks one takes harming a priest," she winks. "Sometimes the gods to terrible things to those folk."

When Alwin departs the priest sits. She is quietly watchful. Closing her eyes, she softly murmurs a morning prayer of communion, seeking some an omen or warning of impending danger, treachery, or good fortune. There are many unknowns. Who is this Granas? A blessing or a bane? Will the trip to town become complicated? Have I done well enough with these new travelling companions, will this work out? Then the river ahead, from where will the trouble come?

Silhouette pokes the needle in her hand into the dress of the doll in her other before she bends down and scoops up the completed dolls and materials in her now free hand to tuck them under her arm. A game of shuffle-all-the-things occurs before a moment later she grabs a bundle that looks like her leather armor and other accouterments.

Silhouette says to Alwin,"Aye, you look like you need it." Before she mouths to the trio with a conspiratorial silence,”Let...him...sleep.”

Silhouette then nods and proceeds up to the top deck making a clunking sound as her stave carried piercing through the bundle ricochets off the siding several times on her way above all the while each thunk is followed by an inward hiss as she mindful of the button in her cheek ruefully sucks in air with each occurrence thinking,"If I could only find a way to stow this forsaken stick in a manner as graceful as a bow on my back!"

Silhouette plants herself under Goram’s and Reisender’s tent and placing the crafts to the side gets into her armor and kit, which almost seems like a preparation for battle as much as getting ready for shore leave. Once she is ready, she plops down and begins work to finish the remaining doll. After finishing the current doll and a long stare at Goram begins working on one three times the size of the others.

When the ship gets to the dock Silhouette will go with the entourage to pick up this Granas, assuming he isn’t just standing there when they pull into the dock.

Date: 23 September, 345
Time: 1000
Environment: Clear Skies
Location: Venniss on the Inland Sea

Granas tries to mentally direct his familiar Skye to watch out for a specific ship with 2 masts. The process is not successful because Venniss is a fairly sizeable port city not a fishing village where arrival of a ship is rare (there are probably 30-40 fishing boats of various sizes run by residents of Venniss as well as 30+ ships moored at present). Trent the bartender pours the Wizard some tea and retrieve breakfast as appropriate, but after a while of remotely scanning the docks through an Osprey's eyes Granas spots a merchant vessel with a motley crew at the fore ... a large Troll, and a wolfen stick out as oversized compared to other occupants moving about the deck. He opts to retrieve his bag and is walking down the street towards the gate (to reach the docks). The wizard makes his way into the dockside area (overshadowed by a number of outfitted wall-ballistas) and begins looking around for wherever the Sweet Kerroline will tie up.

Stubrik shrugs at Alwin's indication that he wants to sleep, "We can send someone, you can ... doesn't matter. Once he gets here, if he puts his hand on the box and dies or something ... we got ourselves an imposter."

Ivy asks Goram to watch the dog (Ambrosius), and the troll happily agrees. Silhouette determines that they are near to landing, and so she stops working on making dolls to go change into her armor and accompany Ivy and Reisender to the Blue Rabbits tavern to find this Granas. As the ship is pulling up to the 3rd in a row of Docks, those on deck (and yes, Granas too) hear a child scream, followed by a woman's cry "My son!! He took my son!! Stop that Man!!! Lenkan!!!" The eagle-eyed amongst you (any with a successful perception roll) spot a short, thick man running with a 5-year old(ish) child under 1 arm (about 40 yards away). However before any amongst you can react, the fellow sprouts a large arrow-shaft through the throat and keels over into the water taking the child with him ...

It all happens so quickly that Ivy is astonished. A scream, an arrow from somewhere, and a boy in the water. There was no time to do much of anything but stare. Now that she comes to her senses the priest decides only one thing matters.

"The child!" Ivy yells, and her knuckles turn white as she grips the boat railing. Something in her mind explodes. Not a baby!

She does not recall running, but finds herself in the water nonetheless. She ignores the chill of the water as her eyes are fixed almost desperately on the child. If the man lives, the others can take care of him. I have to get to the child. Did the arrow hit the boy?

In the water very pleasant, and hopes there are no icky slithering eels lurking under the water. Or leeches. I hate leeches.

Something had kept Mürrischer's attention just long enough for him to miss the start of the action, almost catching him by surprise. He catches the first splash. What the hell is going on? The arrow shot snatches him to be ready for a defensive, getting his bow up and arrow knocked in search of the shooter, not considering it might not help his case as a Wolfen.

Ivy going overboard and into the water turns his gaze a moment, but keeps his mind set on hopefully finding whoever fired the arrow. I'll shoot someone over that little one's injury. It also hits him through physically hearing it. A pup got hurt? Now I know I want who fired the arrow.

He makes his way to the deck of the boat to find the group. Looking around he sees everyone but Ivy. He makes out that although they are close to docking, they haven't yet. What the hell is going on now?, he wonders.

Alwin makes his way to the group and asks, "What is going on? Where is Ivy?" He scans the boat once more, then scan the water around them.
